About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

LOTD: Winged Lashes & Pink Lips

    Hi hi,

Just to share a relatively quick and simple look I wore to the Shu Uemura event this evening.  The two main focus of this look are the eyelashes, and the pink lips.  Nothing too dramatic going on elsewhere on the face.  I have this subconscious habit of wearing the same brand of makeup for the event, just like how fashion people wear the designer during the shows.  So in this LOTD, I used mostly Shu Uemura products, ie the false lashes, and the hot pink lipstick.

All products used will be listed at the end of the entry.

CLICK HERE to read about the Shu Uemura @ Ion Orchard turns 2 event.

Close up shots of my eyes, and the false lashes used:

This look is quite dramatic in terms of the lashes.  I did a winged liner to align with the spikey effect of the false lashes I had on.  I kept the rest of the eyelids quite neutral.  I also made sure my brows [which are pretty unkempt at the moment] rather neatly filled in.  I also extended the winged liner to my lower lids, just a tiny bit at the outer corner.  This is to make my eyes look 'sharper' and more defined.

this is a pair of Shu Uemura falsies in my collection which I bought years ago

the name is Mini Khaki, which is an outer corner lash, with green & black hairs that are slanted outwards

I believe this might be LE and already long discontinued

I layered this outer lash over one of my regular 'natural' volume lashes

I am wearing Shu Uemura rouge unlimited in PK356, which is a soft hot pink.

This is the picture I tweeted, and quite a few of you liked it.

*I used a photo effect that made the color appeared more neon*

    All products used:

Base: Shiseido White Lucent Spot Control base, Shiseido Perfect Refining foundation [which I mixed with some Chanel Sheer Illuminating base to lighten the color], La Mer Loose Powder

Concealer: Shu Uemura Pro Gel Cealer

Blush & Eyeshadows: Shu Uemura M Soft Pink 327, UDPP, Shu Uemura P White 910, ME Soft Copper

Liners: Loreal Superliner Carbon Black, MAC Orpheus

Lashes: Shu Uemura Mini Khaki, Clinique Lower Lash Mascara

Lips: Shu Uemura rouge unlimited in PK356

*Booooo to zits on my forehead!  :(

That's all, and thanks for looking!

LOTD: Just Because [Stained Berry Lips, Winged Liner]

    Hi hi!

Let's just say, I don't like taking pictures with flash setting.  Everything looks harsher, most of the time.  And this look, is a lot chic-er IRL (=in real life) lighting.   My cheeks glow softly, and not like weird patchy flashed out in the pictures. Nonetheless, I was experimenting with the lip stained look, and also having another go at the bold winged liner bit.   The lipstick is also more purple-y berry IRL than the pictures show (which is more redddish).

    Products used:

Foundation - Lancome Pro Base, Lancome Teint Miracle Cream foundation, Chanel loose powder 10

Concealer - Clarins Instant Light Brush on Perfector 010, MUFE Lift Concealer #03

Lips - Clarins Rouge Prodige #130 Barocco

Eyes - Illamasqua Touch cream shadow as base, Clinique Milly palette (the lightest brow bone shade), Bobbi Brown gel liner in Black Caviar Ink

Lashes - Ardel #120, Clinique Lower Lash Mascara

Cheeks - Urban Decay cream highlight in Moonshine, MAC Refined Golden bronzer, Guerlain Blush G Serie Noire

Hope you like this look, and thanks for looking!

I am also in the midst of doing several foundations reviews, but got to be patient, and take starting and end of day pictures etc, to show you the overall finish and longevity, etc.  (Clarins Extra Firming foundation, Shiseido Perfect Refining, Teint Miracle Cream foundation, Elizabeth Arden Mineral Powder foundation to name most of them....) Candy-shop for a foundation junkie like me!!

Two Classic Looks with UD NAKED Palette

    Hi hi,

I did 2 looks using the extreme ends from the UD NAKED palette, in particular, the base/ highlight colour Virgin, the matte brown shades (buck & naked), and the grey/ blacks shades (gunmetal & creep).  There will be lotsa chances to use the rest of the brown shades that might look the same as my usual everyday LOTDs.

The first look is one of my fave looks to do, that is a winged liner with a subtly defined eyes using the matte brown shades, and a pop of color on the lips. I also used the matte shades to lightly shade the sides of my nose.

I used OCC Lip Tar in Anime, which was lighted dabbed on with my fingers, so it looks a little messy and undefined, but that's ok with me.  Kind of difuses the glaring brightness of the colour.

The second look is a classic smokey eyes using greys/ blacks.  I love both Creep and Gunmetal, they kind of remind me of the Sleek makeup palettes, the colours are super creamy and blendable, and the payoff is pow---wow.  I rimmed both eyes heavily with the 24/7 pencil in Zero before using the eyeshadows.  I also used Naked to blend the crease area.  On the lips, I am using MAC Pro Longwear Lipcreme in Overtime.  And I think Virgin is available as a single eyeshadow by itself, I think I need to get that as a 'back-up' cos I don't want to hit pan on this color before the other colors run out!  Call me crazy for thinking of doing this!  :p

On the rest of my face, I am using:

MAC Face and Body foundation, set with La Mer powder, Clarins Instant Light brush on corrector pen, NARS Penny Lane, Guerlain Meterorites Perles

Which look do you prefer? And if you have other suggestions or colour combindations, do leave comments below!

Hope this has been helpful, and thanks for looking!

LOTD: Wearable Winged Liner (Plus What We Ate At Oktober Fest)

    Hi hi,

Just a super quick easy wearable look!  I went with clean skin, pop of color on the cheeks, and winged liner---- I think I must learn to master the winged liner, and be able to do it in a snap.

I didn't have a chance to take the usual LOTD type pictures, so these are shots of when I was already out and about.  Mainly I went to Sentosa (wavehouse) with the sibs for this year's Oktober fest, not too sure I would be going to the actual one at Swiss Club yet..... but the thought of eating all those meat again is... hmmm.... kind of 'gelak' (OD)  to me right now.   But oktober fest at the Swiss Club is like the real thing, the most authentic atmosphere of this beer and feast fest!

Anyhow....how many times have I gone out wearing this exact outfit? LOL.  Super comfy, and gives me lotsa room to move about and eat lots of food, so I ain't complaining.

Here is a pic of me trying to do the Chantana peace sign, but failed miserably, cos my sis who took this pic completely cut out the rest of my fingers!  Boo!

    Products used:

Foundation - Lancome Teint Miracle, set with La Mer powder

Cheeks - Nars Gilda, Mac Conjure Up, Givenchy Prismissime Mat & Glow 71

Lips - Maquillage Glossy Rouge PK715

Eyes - Nars eyeshadow primer, MAC Vanilla e/s, MAC Wedge e/s, Loreal Superliner, Girls Aloud Nicola false lashes

    And more pictures below!!

Yup, that's all!  Thanks for looking!  :)

Wacky Lashes & Double Winged Liner LOTD

I bought these lashes during the Beauty Fair a couple of weeks ago.  I was curious to try them out, and if they work out ok I thought I would wear them out.. but they turned out kind of too wacky, even for me.  I have tried and tested wacky lashes before (eg the Shu cobweb ones, black leather ones but those are all black, and not so striking like this pair).  So anyway, I think this is one pair of lashes which require the full works... the outfit, and makeup.  I was pretty casual in the rest of my outfit (just tee and jeans) and to wear these lashes out would be to attract all the unwanted attention. I think I will save them for Halloween or some special effects look.  LOL.

So eventually I took them off after taking the pictures, and went for a double liner look, since I already at the top wing liner going on.  I wanted to be a little fancy with the liner cos I was not wearing any eyeshadow, I only filled in my brows with the brow set and not a pencil... so everything was kind of bare.

How I did the lower winged liner is basically trying to imagine that your top lashes create a shadow on your lower lids.  And you kind of trace out the shadow as it would fall.  Or imagine your lower lashes.  If you were to extend the lower lashes, that's where they would end up... so I just use a liner brush with cream liner, or you can also use a sharpened pencil liner.....

and extend that imaginery line... and the end result is kind of fuller looking lashes without looking over the top.  I think makeupbytffanyD did a tutorial on this, How to create fuller lashes or something.  Click here to watch the tutorial.

And this is the eventual look. Sorry no close up, I didn't think I would be actually featuring the liner eyelook...but you get a pretty good idea.

That's all, I hope this has been remotely helpful, and thanks for reading!

    Winged Liner: Easy How To

In this very quick tutorial, I will show how to do the winged liner using all the 3 main types of eyeliners available, the Liquid Liner, Cream Liner, and the Pencil Liner.

I picked up this method from SarahVictor's video (in the 4.00min) and I find that this is the best for me, because:

    1. It follows the natural shape of your own eyes, so anyone who use this method will be able to draw a winged liner which suits your own eye shape
    2. Because you are extending your own eye shape, as opposed to just flicking out the liner which can end up quite randomly especially if you are new to winged liners, you willl always end up with symmetrical/balanced winged lined eyes.  I think the tricky part of pulling off the winged liner is always figuring out how far out and the angle in which you do the 'wing' and most of the time, you end up with different looking 'wings' on both eyes.

Here are the stuff I used.  I have to say that Liquid Liners work the best for winged liners, because the line is much cleaner and sharper, which is necessary for this dramatic look.

MAC Smolder Eye  Kohl (which needs to be sharpened prior to use)

    Loreal Super Liner Carbon Gloss

Maybelline Cream Liner which comes with its own brush

    Liquid Liner

Step 1: Before I start, I have to say... please.. no tugging or pulling of your lids!!  Doing this will distort the lining process, not to mention bad for your skin.

Creating the Wing --- basically you look at how your lower eye lid line, and you extend that line upwards, as shown in the pictures below.

    Step 2:

Create a triangle, it's up to you how long you want to extend the first line, the longer it is, the more dramatic the look.  Then turn the brush/applicator inwards, and draw a line inwards back to your lids like below.

Step 3: Line from the outer corner.  No tugging!!

Step 4: Fill in the triangle part, line the rest of the lids. and you can make any adjustments if necessary.

The same steps apply for both the pencil and cream liners, and I will show you the pictures.  They are pretty much self-explanatory.

PENCIL LINER - Make sure you use a sharp pencil.  But it is hard to create a smudge free line.

    CREAM LINER

That's all, and i hope you find this helpful!! Thanks for reading.
