About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

Nails Story: MAC Beth Ditto Collection [Photos, Swatches & Comparisons]

I chose two colors from the MAC's Beth Ditto collection - well, one of them is a gift, and I got the other myself.  I had quickly swatched the colors on a piece of tape when I was at the counter, and the other two colors seem to run quite sheer, and potentially streaky.  These two have the kind of creamy milky, even on the thicker side in terms of the formula, which I much prefer.

I also like that they both look so complimenting together.  A pastel milky yellow, and a creamy milk pale orange - it seems like I can't get enough of these pastel shades lately.

Here is a picture of the rather creepy looking Beth Ditto with her made-up hand below:

And the names of the colors?  Love them!

All swatches here are taken with Butter London top coat and base coat, and 2 coats of colour.

    Near Beth Experience

These can be a little tricky to apply.  You need to work fast, and also let each layer dry first.  Otherwise the polish is prone to bald spots and a gunky surface.  Even in this pictures, they look a little gunky, because I didn't really wait for each layer to dry, and my nail surface isn't the smoothest right now.  The glossy topcoat does help to make everything look smoother and shinier though, so I really recommend using a good topcoat.

Also, I personally think these stark milky pastel shades best suit short nails.  They also tend to make your skin look tanner.

    Life and Beth

A very pastel true pale orange

no hint of pink and red

It was a little difficult to capture the true shade though, because the color keeps showing up darker.

    a few comparisons

as you can see here, any mistake or nicks is magnified like 10 times on this type of milky color

a good idea might also be to use a sheer sheen pearlised topcoat to make the color look less 'flat', or look more flattering..

but I kind of like this bright crayon shades

I can't seem to get enough of creamy pastels...

I am excited for a couple more MAC nail polish releases coming in the rest of the year.

Hope this has been helpful, and thank you for reading!

Nails Story: Three Summery Essies [Photos & Swatches]

I purchased 3 new Essie nail polishes lately, it's really becoming one of my fave 'drugstore' nail polish brands to regularly make purchases from - I like their smoothy creamy colors, and the names always suck me in.

My favourite place to get Essie nail polishes - in case you are wondering - because they aren't always readily available in person from the nail polish suppliers at Scape Park (Dyon), or PNC (Chinatown).

Timtam blogspot - Sg seller - she is amazingly fast and effective, and you receive your order within 2 days after making payment. And she often stocks the latest collections very quickly.  She sells other brands like OPI, Orly, China Glaze too.

The Essies are normally $11 each but I think I got mine at around $9.50 each because of some promo discount going on.

    http://timtam00.blogspot.com/

    Nail Vibe http://www.nailvibe.com/shop/

Two of the colors,  A Crewed Interest & Navigate Her are from the Essie Spring 2012 collection

Essie Action - the neon orange is from the Poppy Razzi collection (4 neons)

[all swatches are taken with Nail Tek II base coat, and Seche Vite topcoat]

    Navigate Her

A milky pastel green that leans quite warm.  Very cream, very opaque.  I don't have anything in the exact same tone in my stash.  Illamasqua MILF is more minty cool toned, and so are many of my other pastel greens that lean towards teal or blue.

    A Crewed Interest

A little thin in terms of formula, I needed 3 coats for full color payoff.  It is a pale peachy beige, and super glossy.  I like this shade on my skintone.

a comparison of Essie peachy & pinks in my collection

Lastly, we have Action - a highlighter neon orange.  I painted this over a white base to give the color a truer payoff, and pop.

What are your fave summer nail polishes?

Hope this has been helpful, and thanks for looking!

NEW DIOR Croisette Makeup Collection Summer 2012 [Information & Photos]

    [Launching 1 May 2012]

    SUMMER LOOK 2012

An escapade on the Croisette... A glamorous couture trip.

    Vibrant colours and easy living...

The Dior Cruise spirit shines, and inspires the most flatte ring shades. Fond of the art of elegant living in the sun, Christian Dior created the Dior Resort and Spring collections as early as 1948. Chic swimsuits and shimmering outfits form the ideal wardrobe, which has a carefully relaxed feel. Unique outdoor chic: a sunny Dior style that illuminates women more than ever before.

Today, Dior revives this fascination for the Croisette with a look inspired by the sun and turquoise waters, created by Tyen. The ambience is fresh and colourful. Between warm shades with incandescent radiance, and aquatic blue colour blocks, eyeshadows flash on the skin and embody the contrast between sunbathing and a dip in the ocean.

Make way for a sexy, chic approach and a French touch. Embrace the glamour of gently tanned skin enhanced with dresses of sunray pleats, a trademark of the House. Show off a French Croisette style!

    5 Couleurs - Croisette Edition

Just for summer, the 5 Couleurs palette is embellished with a sunray pleat relief, a couture reference to the Dior dresses whose finish exemplifies the know-how of the House. The palette comes in two colour interpretations of the French Riviera:

224 <Swimming Pool>explores aquatic pastels, with a splash of freshness to illuminate the eyes: ultramarine, sky blue, turquoise, pearl grey and bikini pink. The shimmering sparkle of the water is within hands reach.

654 <Aurora> visits the ochre of Mediterranean lands for smouldering eyes in incandescent colours. Golden brown, sunny orange, sand and golden yellow bring intense warmth to the eyes.

    1 Couleur Eye-gloss

The first eye gloss by Dior. Its wet shine and intense colours, with multi-faceted reflections, make eyes shimmer with a fresh finish. This stunning gel shadow instantly melts onto the eyelid, delivering a fresh effect. Its applicator leaves an even, glossy layer on the eyelid, in a single stroke.

The finish stays smooth and radiant all day long, regardless of the heat. This ultra-refreshing, extreme- hold formula is also water-resistant.

    020 < Seashell > 560 < Tan > 240 < Azur > 750 < Sunset >

    Diorskin Nude Tan

Customised for a radiant healthy glow

With the aim of a natural and radiant tan, Dior creates a new healthy glow makeup product with a bare skin effect for all skin tones, all year long.

Healthy Glow Enhancing Powder is nestled in a precious round case in white bronze, engraved with the Dior canework motif and decorated with the embossed NUDE logo. This incredibly chic object is now a must in all tanning routines, accompanied by a mini kabuki brush.

The Nude Tan formulas contain translucent mineral prisms that adjust to the skin tone and the surrounding light. The skin tone is enhanced with a sheer, natural finish. Inside the Diorskin Nude range, with the Nude Tan powders, active mineralised water is enriched with a sweet orange extract to boost microcirculation*: with each application, the skin glows with vitality and looks more and more beautiful.

    Healthy Glow Enhancing Powder

To achieve the illusion of a complexion glowing with vitality, the Healthy Glow Enhancing Powder offers a range of original shades. It combines two < colour and radiance > tones with < skin shades > for a result that matches the original skin tone, yet provides a surprisingly natural, radiance-boosting effect. Rosy harmonies add a touch of freshness and an anti-dulling effect, while apricot harmonies ensure a healthy glow, infused with sensuality.

Sneak Peek: Shu Uemura SS2012 New Makeup & Skincare Products

Last week, I attended the media preview for Shu Uemura's latest offerings for Spring/ Summer 2012, and shall share with you some pictures I took during that session.

I will be posting the official information and photos for both the makeup collection and skincare products in a separate entry.  I have also purchased quite a bit of Shu Uemura products from my latest HK trip... so be prepared for several Shu Uemura related entries in the next few days.  :)

Pictures of the SS2012 Celestial Garden makeup collection [for official information & more pictures - link here!]

    New eyeshadow palettes

New glosses and cream cheek colors!

Makeup performance by Shu Uemura's elite makeup artists using the new makeup products:

To call this a 'demonstration' is grossly underestimating their skills and artistic flair with which they apply the products.  Love how they work with their hands, posture and within minutes the models are nicely made up.

    Completed looks:

Where the new skincare products are revealed - at the end of the larger airy room, along the blue carpet... all mysterious and also elegant.

    * I purchased this foundation in Hong Kong - the new Face Architect Smooth Fit fluid foundation.  It is so light and smooth to touch, as you might be able to tell from the swatch on my hand.  And they are also launching new UV under mousse base, which is a pale pale lilac color, that adds a smooth radiant glow to your skin.

That's all I have for this entry... I will be posting two entries about the new products in detail later tonight.

Freshly back from Kong Kong... and there is soooo much I want to share!  Stay tuned!

    Thanks for looking :)

NEW Clarins Extra-Firming Body Cream & Body Lotion

    Clarins Extra Firming Body Care

    Body Cream S$102

    Body Lotion S$102

    Launch Date: May 2011

It's the spring/ summer season when we get a lot more body conscious, and if you been working out, or looking forward to a beach vacation (think bikini season), you would want your skin and body to be in tip-top condition.

*seriously, I must must get back into some kind of fitness routine, I am so fat and unfit it's not even healthy.

Anyway, I guess this body lotion might just be what I need to provide me with some kind of impetus to start jogging again.

and speaking of bikini season -- check out this little picture of me as a kid [5 or 6 years old then], must be at a Desaru beach resort with my sister!  I seem to have lost that 'skinny' gene, or do I still have it??  Talk about tiny weeny bikini!  :p

I know rubbing the lotion would not get me back to this state, but I can only hope that the awesome ingredients and my regular efforts in application (hopefully together with some exercise) would achieve satisfactory results.

information about the plant extracts ingredients:

I can't wait to try this out, and start working out again too!

What are your summer fitness tips and secrets?

Swatch Fest! Peachy Coral Lips for Summer

    Hi hi!

Doing a quick swatch fest for most of the peachy/ coral lip products which I have.  I did not include any of peachy nudes, you might have seen before, HERE.

I find that you can wear any of these colors without having to worry about being too bold, or whether the lip colors clash with your eye makeup.  Most MU collections are releasing coral shades this season (think MAC Pret-a-Papier, Spring Forecast ----  at least 3 or 4 lipsticks are peachy corals).

I believe Ravishing is still available in MAC's permanent collection, and it is a nice creamy coral color with a creamy texture.

Jest is a reddish coral, it is slightly sheer with tiny gold shimmer.  Kind like MAC Viva Cyndi but without the shimmer of cos.

YSL RV in No30.  I have been wearing this a lot recently.  So wearable!!  :)

OCC Grandma, and in this picture, I dabbed on and blended the product using my fingers.  Which makes it a lot easier if you are doing this outside, because I can't be bother with lip brushes and all that when I am out.

Recall the other day when I applied Grandma with a brush (note different lighting conditions & time of the pictures were taken but definitely the same product!!)

Obey looks a lot brighter in the tube than on the lips.  It looks so nude in this picture, but in real life, the color kind of pops because it is so matte.  Definitely want to slap on a glossy neutral sheer lipcolor over this.

I also have 2 lip glasses to share.  They look very similar!

Hope this is helpful! What are your own fave coral/ peach lip colors?

    Thanks for looking!

Haul: Jo Malone Perfume & Chanel Rouge Allure!

I have been watching a new person on YT lately, and if you have been reading my blog long ago, you know how often I am suckered into buying something just because I have seen it featured in a YT video.  If you read lollipop26, she recently 'recommended' some YT people she likes to watch, and one day I found myself browsing and watching this new girl's videos.  She is none other than Dara (YT username BelleDuJourNYC) and her blog is equally nice to read.  She is so pretty, and she hauls fabulous stuff, and she lives in NYC, works as a fashion buyer.  I am sold!  Haha.  I am always suckered into buying stuff if I think that a particular person I am watching/ reading as good taste, and Dara is very urban modern chic and cool.  I likey.

And that explains why I bought the following two items.  *shamefaced*

Jo Malone Nectarine Blossom & Honey Cologne  (S$190 for 100ml, S$95 for 30ml)   I am not going to mess up the description of this scent, so after a check at the website, this is the "definition" of the fragrance.

'a delicious and fruit fragrance that tells a story of an early morning visit to London's Covent Garden Flower Market, a sweetly scent oasis in the heart of the city. This youthful fragrance wraps the notes of enticing fruits and the delicate spring flowers in the warmth of acacia honey'

There is a Jo Malone store in Singapore, at Ngee Ann City (two levels above Zara).  The packaging is to die for, so luxe, so chic, I feel like I am buying a present for myself!  Love love the bag, the box, the ribbon, for that price... well, maybe it is expected after all.  I am so not complaining!  :)  I am also tempted to get the body lotion... but it is OOS.... hmmm..... I have been wanting to get a perfume lately, most likely Chanel's ALLURE, which is in the same price range if not slightly more.  However, I think I am very very contented with this for now. It smells divine, seriously.  I actually tried on this perfume the previous day, and by the end of the day, the residual scent was still fresh and peachy, which means my body acids is reacting well to this fragrance.  It is so meant to be!

This will replace my lemming for Chanel's ALLURE which I have been thinking of re-purchasing, but well, I am very contented for now!  :)  Can't wait to spray this all over!

And the next purchase is a Chanel Rouge Allure lipstick in 187 Genial.  This is from the Summer 2010 collection, which is selling out fast, if not already OOS at the counters.  This costs $44, which is cheaper than the Rouge Allure Lacquer (S$49).  The packaing is super sleek, it is the 'clicking' one, which I thought is so chic! Makes you want to whip out the lipstick and touch up all the time.

The colors of the pictures don't do this color justice.  It looks different in all the various lighting conditions, ranging from a true bright coral, to fuschia and also almost neon.  I like how it brightens up my face without making me look like a clown.

That's all, I think I better stop hauling til my Hong Kong trip!

    Thanks for reading.

Going to the beach....sugarsweet....lots of stuff!

OK.... serious damage done yesterday after my little spree.  I have to preface the following with a disclaimer.  I DID NOT have to pay full price for all the MAC stuff. As I mentioned before, I got a 25% off the prices.  So all these cost less than S$200 after the discount. Which is quite OK considering I got 10 items.  My sis bought the Shimmermoss eyeshadow for herself.

I am sure you are all familiar with the Sugarsweet collection, and have heard enough of me going on about what I have been wanting to buy from this collection, so I will just show the pictures and list the items:

Everything.  The MUA put everything in bag by the time I got there, and all I did was check the items.   I bought everything which I put on reserve.

Perfect Topping MSF, Peppermint Patti Nail Laquer, Butter nutty Shadestick, Dear Cupcake e/s, Aquavert e/s, St Germaine Lipstick

Gorgeous St Germaine Lipstick. I have a feeling I need to apply this rich color with a LIGHT hand.

Perfect Topping MSF.  Good for me this particular one has more of the lilac/purple veining, which I love!  And the texture is very fine, not chunky....I can totally use this as a blusher.

Peppermint Patti.. which I hastily applied on my finger, that's 2 coats.  It isn't as sheer as I thought it would be.  So that's good.  And it is totally different from the OPI Garguantan Green Grape....

Besides the Sugarsweet stuff, I also bought a few other items.  I got my first VIVA GLAM lipstick... I think this is Viva Glam 5? Anyway... pretty nude, mauve colour.

I bought a couple of eyeshadows.   All that Glitters - the goldish brown neutral colour, and Smut, the darker brown.  I need more browns.   HAHA.  And my sister bought Shimmermoss eyeshadow.

Because I bought so much stuff, the girl put everything in this HK bag....  which is cute but not something I would use.

Some swatches... I am not very good at swatching.  On the left, there is Shimmermoss, Aquavert (which you can hardly see), Dear Cupcake, Smut, in the middle row, there is All that Glitters, and Butternutty, and the 2 lipsticks on the right.

Swatches on my fingertips - from left to right, Dear Cupcake, All that Glitters, Aquavert and Smut.

And the following is an overpriced, glammed up Havanias slippers.  My first pair.  My sister owns a couple of Havanias... but I never saw the appeal of these overpriced rubber soles.  Besides I could never fit a pair that fit me, they are always too big or too small and the straps are always too 'loose' and 'flappy' for my feet.  But I did managed to try on this pair which fits decently, and it's limited edition apparently.  I like the gold plated name tag...yup. The sucker that I am.  My sister bought the same pair too.
Nail polish - OPI vodka and caviar.

BF is flying off to SF on 18 April... and I am constantly updating my shopping list for him..... decisions, decisions, decisions!!! And folks are coming back from their Europe sojourn soon, so more Superdrugs.BarryM stuff coming my way.

I am going to the beach now!!  Of cos I am not wearing my new slippers, just going to wear my ratty old one from french connection.  :)

Looking of the Day using inexpensive products

    HI!!

Just wanted to do a bright summery look using only drugstore and other inexpensive products - however, I did have to use my MAC brushes to apply the products.  I also use a whole lot of other brands besides MAC, both high-end and cheaper brands out there. I suppose at the end of the day, we all just want to look pretty without spending loads of money, right?

These are the stuff I used -- sorry I don't have prices of these products.

    Face:

Canmake UV White Clear Essence Base

    Maybelline Pure Fluid Mineral Foundation

6 pc contour and highlight palette (I used a lighter shade to set the foundation)

Canmake Color Stick (07) to correct undereyes

    Maybelline Highlight and Conceal Duo

    Cheeks:

Maybelline Expert Wear Blusher in 50 Dusty Mauve

    Lips:

NYX Round Lipsticks in 504 Harmonica

    Eyes:

    -Base

All over the lids Majolica Majoroca GD821 Gold Cream Shadow

Maybelline Impact Express Smoot Pencil Shadow in the blue one

-Eyeshadows from the Coastal Scents 78 palette, I also used this to fill in my brows.

    -Liner

Silky Girl Long Wearing Eyeliner in 04 Navy Blue

    -Lashes

My usual falsies, and also Maybelline's Stiletto Mascara for lower lashes.  It really does lengthen!

    Pictures time!!

Cute Yellow Bracelet from the same Japanese $2 store I mentioned in my stickers post.

I am off work for a week , and I am sooooooo tempted to fly off to hong kong for shopping this weekend!!  :P

That's all, and thanks for reading!
