About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

LOTD: Festive Look with cle de peau Palette de Voyage [with Brows & Eyelook step by step!]

    Hi hi!

This is a look featuring the cle de peau Voyage de Palette which I mentioned in this entry here.  It is not often that you come across a palette with a specific brow powder, so I am throwing in a quick step by step of how I would fill in my brows.

I ended up with a smokey sparkly look and as I am looking at the pictures now, I realise that this palette really reminds me of the Chanel holiday, in particular the Harmonie du Soir quad - in terms of the bronze gold, pink and taupe shades.

Here is the color placement of everything I used:

and a swatch just to recap:

I only used the lighter of the brow powder to fill in my brows.   Please note that I have not professionally trimmed my brows in almost a year.  I just tweezed the stray hairs from time to time.  I prefer my brows full and relatively define, but with a soft color.  I like  that the brow powder in this palette is just ashy enough and doesn't contain any red tones which is important for brows defining.

    * this is by no means an indepth brow tutorial, I have done one before - link here!

    1. I used the angled brush to draw a line under the shape of my brows - this will form the basis of my brows.

    2. The line is drawn, and I will proceed to draw a parallel line at the top of where I want my brows to be.

    3. You see here, I am just filling in the area between the two lines I have drawn.

    4. Where the two lines meet at the arch, that's where I will sharpen the ends of the brow.

    and the eyelook -

    1. Apply brow color on the brow bone (I primed my eyelids with NARS primer).  The only shade in the palette which I am using is really a tad too dark for my browbone...but I do want some sheen there..hence I went ahead anyway.

    2. Apply the golden crease color.  I am glad this is the largest area of the palette, but I think this gold is my fave shade in the quad.  It is pigmented, and as you can see in the picture it contains very shiny gold bits.

    3. Apply the darkest brown bronze shade on the lids.  The color is easy to blend out, and I try to blend it into the gold...though I think some clear lines could still be seen.  Note that I used the same brush applicator throughout this eyelook.  It is soft enough for blending, and dense enough to pick up and apply the various shades.  When using one single brush for a look, I usually start by applying the lightest shade first.

    4. I dabbed a little of the pink shade in the inner lids.. this is controversial, some pple might not like it, thinking it might result in a tired eyes.. but I think it looks all neaten up when the liner and lips are on.  (I used a black liquid liner for the look, inside of using the dark brown liner shade).   I also skipped the mascara, cos I don't really use mascara... and I am using a pair of demi lashes from DUP (413).

Then I finished the look by dusting on the cheek colors and applying the lipstick.

My foundation routine - I am using the cle de peau silky creme foundation, cle de peau concealer, and La Mer powder to set.

Overall, this is a pricey palette, but you are getting quite a few goodies in side, and the colors though are not extraordinarily unique, you do get a variety of luxe textures and finish.  The brushes are of decent quality, and you can actually use them, if you are going to travel with it.    It is also a very elegant and luxe gift for that someone special if your life, I may add.   I know I will be popping this lipstick into my bag when I am going out tonight!

Hope this entry has been helpful, and thank you for reading!

LOTD: Clean yet Striking with Notorious & Cherry Lush

    Hi hi!

I had thought of putting this LOTD together with the haul entries for Chanel Notorious and Tom Ford....but ended up posting it separately here, and also shall take the chance to just ramble for a bit (at the end of this entry, in case some of you aren't really interested).

It's a very very simple look - because I had wanted to try out the products on my face, instead of just showing swatches on my hands/ lips which doesn't really mean anything nor very helpful... cos we wear makeup on our faces... not backs of our hands, no?

    Here's what I did -

    1. Apply Giorgio Armani Face Fabric on my face, did not set with powder, and no concealer at all

    2. Fill in the brows as usual - I think I am getting quite good at faking that I have groomed brows... when I can't remember when's the last time I had them professionally groomed.

    3. Used Chanel Notorious to 'sculpt' my cheers and a little on my nose.... and then some more on my crease before I applied the falsies.

    4. Applied and built up Tom Ford Cherry Lush gloss on my lips.

    5. Applied Giorgio Armani Sheer Blush in No5 on apples of my cheeks - or else I would end up with 'too cool toned' cheeks. Heheh.

This is pretty easy to achieve, and makes one look very groomed, and lady-like, without trying too hard.  Besides, everyone would think that you are really confident and classy to rock some red lips.

and a really in your face shot which I took with my iphone5 and heavily filtered for the heck of it.

and added some lashes, but I think I prefer this look without the lashes.  Surprise huh.  Love how 'contoured' my cheeks look, thanks to the Chanel Notorious.

Okay, here's the rambling part, not quite sure where to start - so let's do an IN and OUT list:

    What's IN

Going HK soon, for a whole entire week.   I have been there countless times, but never a whole entire week.  Yay!

Enjoying the absolutely fantastic TANGS beauty hall.  Seriously, I have been going there like 3 - 4 times a week, whenever the brands invite me to visit the counters.

Yankee Candles.  OMG.  I wanted Red Velvet, and I bought it, and also Gingerbread... but I think I need back ups of Gingerbread!!  My room smells like some Christmas bakery every night.  It might smell sickeningly sweet to some, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

    Catching up with friends.

    Going for long morning walks.

Blog is turning 6.  Lately, I have been thinking, and seeing how so much has changed, and so much has remained the same here.  I still feel extremely fortunate to be able to feature all the brands I love here, meeting awesome people behind the brands and having a very appreciative audience to blah blah to. And everything is still the same, looking the same the day I  decided to set up this blog to ramble about makeup and random stuff.  The Makeup Blogette has never ever existed for brands, for free products, for all the stuff which seems to get some other bloggers really caught up with.  That's why I never feel the need to fulfil weird 'sponsored' obligations.  The minute it stops being fun, is when I will stop.  And so far, it's been nothing but fun, and that should be the way.

Body pampering - bought this set of Laura Mercier mini hand creams (30g each tube) consisting of my fave LM scents.  LOVE LOVE I can't say how much I love the LM body line.    And I also bought the philosophy gingerbread man hot salt scrub.  Smells divine!  And makes your skin REALLY SMOOTH.

I love scrubs.  Especially yummy ones.  I got the Laura Mercier creme brulee sugar scrub while I was in Taiwan earlier this year.  It also has a warming sensation when you massage it onto your skin.  The same goes for the gingerbread man.  Both are equally exfoliating, but the Laura Mercier one feels slightly smoother (I tried and tested!) and after a good scrub I like to use a good body oil cos that's when your newly scrubbed skin is best to absorb the goodness of the oil - current fave, Caudelie divine oil.  Everyone needs this!

    What's OUT

BAD PR.  Seriously.  Please don't waste our time.  I could have really shame everyone involved...but moving on!

    Hot weather.

    Blog backlog.

    Waiting for my Shopbop order.

(let's keep the OUTs really short, and focus on the INs!)

YSL Glossy Stain 11 Rouge Gouache [Swatches & Quick LOTD]

The YSL Glossy Stain - Gloss, or Stain, or More??

It feels like a stain, but looks like a gloss, and I think it also has the payoff of a cream lipstick.  It's hard to explain.  When applied, it has that "wet" feeling of applying a lipstain that sinks into your lips.  But it soon settles to a creamier feeling, like a lipstick.. and the finish is not matte or 'stained', it actually looks glossy - not sticky glossy, but a nice sheen.

This is also very long-wearing.  I know, because I slapped some on my hand, and I had to RUB RUB with soap to get it completely off.   I think I want to get more of these...It is hard to imagine, but YSL has managed to come up with a truly unique product in the lip color market - I mean, there are a gazillion types of lip products out there, but I don't think there is anything like this.

    Description from Sephora:

    What it is:
A revolutionary new lip product that combines the texture and shine of a gloss with the long-wear of a stain.

    What it does:
Coat your lips with this lip color that offers a lightweight texture, which immediately melts onto lips. Glossy Stain delivers intense glossy color for an extremely long-lasting shine.

I picked mine in the shade 11 something bright and pretty, it looks like a deep bright pink, but I think can pass off as a blue-toned red on my lips.

The packaging is kind of like a nail polish bottle, with a screw cap, and the applicator is big enough to apply the product on your lips without having to go back and forth.  It has that signature YSL cosmetics scent, which I LOVE.

I didn't experience any feathering nor 'bleedning' in the application of this product, and considering that it is such an intense color, the application for me, was a breeze.

    HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

    Photos & Swatches:

    All products used:

This is what I would normally wear daily (minus the bright lips most probably).

base: Lancôme UV Expert GN-Shield BB Complete SPF50 PA+++ set with Lancôme Maqui Blanc Miracle compact foundation

concealer: Collection2000 lasting perfection concealer in 01 Fair

cheeks: NARS Madly (which matches exactly what is on my eyelids)

eyes: Shiseido Shimmering cream eye color in OR313 (featuring this soon! I used my fingers to apply this all over my lids, adding more nearer the lashes -- LOVES)

No lashes, no liner, because we don't need all that everyday.

That's all, and thanks for looking!

Holiday LOTD: Big Reddish Gold Eyes & Red Lips

Hi hi, this LOTD came about because I was rather smitten with the current Loreal ad campaign featuring Fan Bing Bing and the Infallible eyeshadows...of course the beautiful colors which were used on her eyes are not part of the current range brought in.  I couldn't seem to find an online image of the look, but I remember vaguely, some gorgeous golds, reddish browns all blended into a rather vampy smokey eyelook.  She is wearing a red lips that has gold shimmer... anyway, that's the general image in my head... and so I poked around my eyeshadows last night, looking for something that might resemble the colors used in the ad campaign.

I improvised on the actual look (obviously, because I didn't have anything to mimic from) and I ended up with this rather 'vampy' look, because I extended the inner corner of the eyeliner, and I piled on the false lashes (a combination of Ardel 120 and my TW lashes in 7X) -- which added volume, and made my eyes look longer (tip -- wear the falsies as far out as you can on the lash line).  Thick coats of mascara was applied to my lower lashes.

I didn't want to 'balance' the look with a pale/ natural lip color... because this is such a statement look... I think a statement lip color is necessarily to match the eyes.  I did however, went with more neutral cheeks - very subtle color.  I also kept the rest of the face very clean, no highlight, no shimmer at all. So you can pull off BOTH bold eyes and lips... just keep the base & cheeks very clean and simple.

I have done similar bold eyes & lips combo, links below:

    Black Eyes & Red Lips

Prada Inspired Silver Eyes & Pink Lips

Would I wear this look out? Definitely, but only if I am attending a certain function or dinner, where I want to look really sharp and glam...on a normal day, say I am going shopping, or meeting up friends over coffee/ movie, etc.. I would not do this...I personally think this would be too distracting, and as much as I love doing looks like this, I won't want my makeup to take attention away from whatever I am saying, it's kind of weird if I am talking and my listener is staring at my eyeshadow or red lips the whole time!

To make it more 'wearable' for a casual outing, I would do a red stained lips, instead of this intense glossy lips.  I might only wear my 'natural' falsies.  I would still keep the original eyelook as I don't think it would be that 'much' after I toned out the other two elements mentioned.

Having said that though, I do feel like I want to be one of those girls who make red lips part of their signature look.  Wear very little on the face, and just rock the red lips.  That would be quite nice...

All products used will be stated at the end of this entry:

with slight camera flash.  pardon my bedhead hair.

Concealer: Cle de Peau stick concealer **** AMAZING - review coming ****

LOTD: Inglot Eyeshadows Black Eyes & RED Lips

    Hi hi,

    Dramatic and chic look?

Some tips to note -- to pull off this look, which I really like!

    1. Keep cheeks warm to avoid looking 'goth'

    2. Keep base clean and quite natural

    3. Keep eye colors to a mono-color, with some tinge of gold flecks which matches the cheeks

    Products used:

Foundation: Lancome Pro Base, Bourjois Healthy Mix foundation, La Mer powder

Cheeks: NARS Laguna, NARS Multiple Lamu

    Lips: Illamasqua Sangers

Eyes: NARS eyeshadow primer, Inglot eyeshadows, no liner cos everything is all blackened!

Some close ups of products used, and the eye look:

Lamu is a very warm toned/ kind of like Cheeky Bronze msf, with very distinct gold glitter flecks.  It is perfect to use on the cheeks as highlight while you blend out the rest of the color onto your cheeks.

I used the following Inglot eyeshadows:

A matte black with gold shimmer bits, and it is so smooth, and as it blends out, the gold flecks become more obvious, really nice effect.  Hope you can see in the close up eye pics below!  I used the pale color to blend the crease area cos they both have the same gold toned.

the black smokey look makes my eyes look so much better, and goes well with my black hair too.

I will be rocking this look with a black tie-dyed tee, and faded jeans later.  :)  Might post more pictures!

    Thanks for looking!

LOTD: RED Lips for CNY Day One

Not the best pictures, seeing as I did my face MU the whole morning, and only left the house late afternoon, and it was kind of hot and humid at home.  That means some shiny face action going on.  I did have on my fave foudation of the following -- Bourjois Healthy Mix foundation.

On my lips, I have on Illamasqua Sangers and Succubus.  For eyes, I have on MAC Prance and Unflappable.

Some choice pictures from the first day of visiting --- well, it was only to a couple of places -- same group of people.

And it is always fab meeting up with all my gorgeous cousins and aunties!

That's all, I have another LOTD with the Inglot eyeshadows coming right up!

    Happy Holidays!

    LOTD & Christmas Outing!

    Hi everyone,

today more than 20 of us met up at Vivocity today, for our unofficial annual beauty Christmas gathering.  We had some food and drinks, and we also had a beauty gift swap.   Diana organised the gathering sometime back, and I think there was about the same number of girls who turned up, plus or minus some new faces~  As always, it was very very challenging to be able to mingle with everyone in the big group, and we ended up interacting with whoever is near us most of the time.  As the outdoor stage area was closed for event, we went to Marche for our games and swap -- which turned out to be a blessing in disguise -- it was a lot cooler and we could sit comfortably with our drinks and dinner.

Before I go into the pictures and what happened this evening, let's start with a quick LOTD which I recreated loosely from this particular pixiwoo tutorial CLICK HERE to watch.  Basically it is a strong liner, glittery shadow and strong lips.   In that tutorial, Sam used a very glittery RMK eyeshadow, which I have swatched before, and it felt like this Shu Uemura eyeshadow which I have featured before in THIS ENTRY.  But I used the eyeshadow dry, it might have worked better if I have a sticky base to work with.

Nonetheless.... here are the products used:

Foundation: Cosme Decorte Essence Control, Chanel Mat Lumiere 20, LM translucent loose powder

Cheeks: MUFE Mat Bronzer, Illamasqua Chased, Guerlain pressed Meteorites

Liners: Loreal superliner, Stila Smudgepot ** Lower Lids --MUFE Pencil in #52, set with Shu Uemura dark navy metallic eyeshadow

    Lips: Chanel Rouge Coco Cambon

Eyes: NARS primer, MAC Brule, NARS Blondie, Shu Uemura White Rainbow e/s

And on to the pictures we took!

Let's start with the candid shots:

My swap goody - maybeline volume turbo boost mascara

Ok, I am sorry, I have to crop the group pictures all so tiny, cos I want to avoid a 30-pictures entry,

if you want any of the pictures solo, leave a comment below, I can email or send via pm to you!

Honestly, this is what makes beauty blogging fun for me.  Being able to ramble about my hobby is one thing, and being able to meet so many like-minded people is awesome.  I have known many of these girls here for at least one year, some over two years!  It is undeniable that we feel very comfortable with each other, at ease, because blogging in this cosy Onsugar community draws us closer.  I know I didn't get to speak with many of the girls today, but it was just great that we all took the time off to be there, and catch up with one another.   Once again, here's to many years of friendship and beauty ramblings!

ps: I am in the midst of revamping and shifting my room, and everything is in an absolute mess!  Hope to get everything sorted out this week, and I can settle down to re-organise my makeup storage, and I was mentioning on twitter I will do a storage entry/ video type thing when I am finished with the organisation.  Also, I want to do a product rave and giveaway this week too.  And maybe a fave products of 2010 entry maybe around Christmas time.

That's all, and thanks for reading.

    Happy Holidays.

LOTD: Pin-Up Look with Red Lips Plus Matching Outfit!

Hi hi, this is what I wore to my work dinner event on Friday.  Some of you have already seen my twitpics from the night.  Every year, I am in charge of organising my office 'dinner & dance', and this year, my team and I decided to do a 'retro-themed' event.  And it's really happening, because for the first time (in a while I suppose) that I can really see most people putting in the effort to dress to the theme.  My whole team and I went all out, of course, and we turned up from the various decades of years past (50s, 60s, 70s).

I went for a classic winged liner with red lips look, rather than the retro 'mod' style of Edie Sedgwick/ Twiggy type of big eyes pale lips combo, simply because of my rad outfit.  No time to set my hair, cos we had to be there early running about and setting up the venue.

    Here is the MU breakdown:

Foundation: Lancome Teint Miracle, MUFE HD Powder

Cheeks: MAC Sculpt and Shape, NARS Mata Hari

Eyes: NARS Abyssinia, NARS Sophia, Loreal Super Liner, Lashes from SASA (dunno brand)

Lips: Chanel Rouge Allure Lacque Dragon, MAC Russian Red

I wish I can post pics of my whole team and I cos we really look like the cast of a musical or something, but well, here is not a place to do so.  Shucks.

To get into character, we all got these crazy glasses (about $15 from Far East Plaza, dunno the shop name).

And my outfit of the night, was made by my cousin (she ain't a pro tailor, just really really enthusiastic, creative and artistic --- if you remember, the Corpse Bride from last year's halloween -- yup that's her) sewed my dress and the mega pouffy petticoat.  Shoes from New Look.  Black Cardi from Basic House, Pearls from Warehouse.  Some vintage black belt I found in my wardrobe.

And a few more pics from when I was trying out the whole ensemble and goofing about:

** I played with photoshop filter effects in the next pic**

And just to show one of my cousin's works in progress -- she drew/ painted this little pic -- I am kind of amazed at the likeness.

Here's her work, and the actual pic side by side.

That's all, hope you enjoyed this!

    Thanks for looking!

    LOTD: Bronzed Red Cambon!

This is a look featuring some UD eyeshadows and Chanel Rouge Coco in 31 Cambon.

Face: NARS Sheer Glow (applied with LY34 brush), Cover Girl Oil Control Pressed Power (applied with Kabuki brush)

Cheeks: MAC Cheeky Bronze MSF (applied with MAC 109 brush)

Lips: Chanel Rouge Coco in 31 Cambon (applied direct)

Eyes: TFSI, UD Skull Palette (Chopper on the lids to crease applied with MAC217, and Twice Baked to emphasize the crease with MAC226 brush), MAC White Frost to hightlight (with MAC225 brush)

Lashes and Liner: No upper line, Ardel 120 lashes, MAC Blackline on lower lids, YSL Faux Cils mascara

    Brows: MAC Mink Browset

The overall results was really kind of bronzy, cos I was rather heavy handed with the Cheeky Bronze.  I suppose it was OK for night time. Really liking the formula of the Coco Rouge, they feel very nice and creamy on your lips, and the color is a satin finish, not too shiny, not matte.

CLICK ON THIS VIDEO by one of my recent fave YT guru, her name is Lisa Eldridge, and she shows 4 ways to wear your lipstick, and in that video she features the Coco Rouge in Noir.

That's all, and thanks for looking.

LOTD: Chanel's Dragon again & Random posing (pic heavy)

    Hi hi..

Just playing around with my stuff, and camera settings, and ended up with a bunch of pictures, but these are fit for showing.  Haha.

I tried to vaguely recreate Cameron's Golden Globe look, I think it's basically a neutral eye, and her eyes are lined all around, and her face is radiant and fresh.... but I haven't line my waterline in ages and ages, so I did that today, and with very little eyeshadow on the rest of the eyes.  It's supposed to be kind of raw and undone... and hopefully contrasted with the clean face and red lips.

    Here goes:

Face: RMK base, MUFE Mat Velvet+, La Mer Powder

    Cheeks: NARS Laguna, NARS Matahari

Lips: Chanel Rouge Allure Lacque Dragon

Eyes: Feline to tight line... Loreal Superliner in Carbon Black on upper lids, MAC Mylar e/s all over, and MAC Style Snob (Satin Taupe will work well too)

Before the red lips.... a nice neutral everyday look.

I kind of dig this look actually.

Yup this is the random posing or lame attempt at some editorial style posing, basically I was lying on the floor watching TV and my sister went a little trigger happy with the camera.

And before heading out, slap on the red lipstick!

It was darn hard to get an even shape today!!  See how the upper lips Cupid Bow watever is seriously uneven.  I had to clean up and start over for that area.

And I like this blurry arty look... kind of interesting.

Update:  I switched to a stained look instead.

Yup, that's all, and thanks for reading/ looking!!
