About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

No ads, no paid links etc please.  I am in charge of all content and pictures here.

I am not a makeup artist, nor do I have any professional training in makeup.

LOTD: Using my INGLOT Eyeshadows Wet - Amazing!

This is quite a random and accidental LOTD... because I already had on my foundation, brows and blush when I headed out for dinner and drinks Sat evening.  When I got home, I thought why not play around with my eyeshadows and do a full face makeup before I wash everything off for the day?  And so this is what I ended up with....

I mainly tried using all my eyeshadows wet in this LOTD..and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it.  I used a couple of old angled liner brushes to create the sharp lines for this look, and also to pack on the colors at precise areas of the eyes.

Shall 'talk' through the whole eyelook as I go along.... and all products used will be listed at the end of this entry.

I subconsciously did this look based on NikkieTutorials' video HERE which is a Beyonce inspired look.

Using black eyeshadow WET as a liner

I first line my eyes on the upper and lower lids, a rather bold and winged look.  I sprayed my brush with MAC Fix+ and dipped it into a corner of a black glittery eyeshadow from Inglot.  I am amazed, and astounded,  really...by how pigmented, smooth the results is.  I could draw very clean and precise lines, and I didn't have to dip back in the pan at all til I am ready to do the other eye.  And when the wet eyeshadow dries...the look is a ultra black matte effect.  I even used it to line my lower waterline.

    Purple liner!

I double-lined my lower lids with MUFE#92, a brilliant vibrant purple to further define the lower lids, and to add a pop of color.  I also used a damp brush to apply this eyeshadow.

    Golden highlights

Next, I also used a rather antiqued gold eyeshadow, again, from Inglot to brighten up the inner corners of the eyes.  I later also used the same shadow to dust on some shine on the centre of my upper lids.

    Upper lids & Crease

I used yet another Inglot eyeshadow to soften up the look and add color to my eyelids up to the crease.  This time, I used a fluffy brush and did not wet the eyeshadow.  Then I finish off with brow highlights.

I did not use any eyeliner at all, because using the eyeshadows wet means I could draw very sharp liners, and define my eyes. The colors remained vibrant as ever after they are dried.. and there was no fall out at all because of the moisture.

    All products used:

Foundation - Ettusais BB Cream, Maquillage White Essence UV foundation, La Mer Powder to set

Cheeks - Clarins Mosaique bronzer, Laneige Styling Romantic Blush #01

Lips - Laneige Styling Romantic  Lip Duo SYR34

Eyes - UDPP base, Purple Liner MUFE #92, Black Liner Inglot AMC#64 (Black with gold sparkles), Gold Accent Inglot AMC Shine 06, Lid & Crease AMC 53 (Deep Brown with silvery blue sparkles), Brow Highlight Inglot Pearl 395

After this whole experiment, I removed every trace of makeup with Bioderma, and wiped my face with MAC wipes, before using my facial cleanser...and then my night time skincare routine.

That's all, and hope you enjoyed this look!

LOTD: Winged Lashes & Pink Lips

    Hi hi,

Just to share a relatively quick and simple look I wore to the Shu Uemura event this evening.  The two main focus of this look are the eyelashes, and the pink lips.  Nothing too dramatic going on elsewhere on the face.  I have this subconscious habit of wearing the same brand of makeup for the event, just like how fashion people wear the designer during the shows.  So in this LOTD, I used mostly Shu Uemura products, ie the false lashes, and the hot pink lipstick.

All products used will be listed at the end of the entry.

CLICK HERE to read about the Shu Uemura @ Ion Orchard turns 2 event.

Close up shots of my eyes, and the false lashes used:

This look is quite dramatic in terms of the lashes.  I did a winged liner to align with the spikey effect of the false lashes I had on.  I kept the rest of the eyelids quite neutral.  I also made sure my brows [which are pretty unkempt at the moment] rather neatly filled in.  I also extended the winged liner to my lower lids, just a tiny bit at the outer corner.  This is to make my eyes look 'sharper' and more defined.

this is a pair of Shu Uemura falsies in my collection which I bought years ago

the name is Mini Khaki, which is an outer corner lash, with green & black hairs that are slanted outwards

I believe this might be LE and already long discontinued

I layered this outer lash over one of my regular 'natural' volume lashes

I am wearing Shu Uemura rouge unlimited in PK356, which is a soft hot pink.

This is the picture I tweeted, and quite a few of you liked it.

*I used a photo effect that made the color appeared more neon*

    All products used:

Base: Shiseido White Lucent Spot Control base, Shiseido Perfect Refining foundation [which I mixed with some Chanel Sheer Illuminating base to lighten the color], La Mer Loose Powder

Concealer: Shu Uemura Pro Gel Cealer

Blush & Eyeshadows: Shu Uemura M Soft Pink 327, UDPP, Shu Uemura P White 910, ME Soft Copper

Liners: Loreal Superliner Carbon Black, MAC Orpheus

Lashes: Shu Uemura Mini Khaki, Clinique Lower Lash Mascara

Lips: Shu Uemura rouge unlimited in PK356

*Booooo to zits on my forehead!  :(

That's all, and thanks for looking!

LOTD: Wearable Blues, Pink Lips & False Lashes Tips

Hi hi, this is a look using mainly Shu Uemura products.  Shall go through them as I list the products in detail.  When I first started out with makeup (not counting when I was in my late teens - but I mean in my early adult years), I used lots of Shu Uemura products, especially their eyeshadows, blushes and makeup brushes.  I didn't use their foundation, cos I was obsessed with the Dior ones.  Fast forward to recent years, I have ventured out to many other brands and having way too much of everything in my stash, but these early years makeup items have a special place in my heart.  If you have seen my very very early onsugar posts in the beauty product junkie group, I was doing looks and tutorials using mainly the Shu Uemura eyeshadows.

This is my little palette of current Shu Uemura palette - I have sold or given away several of the brights, and these are the classic colors which I know I would go back to anytime.   I put them all into my unii palatte as the old Shu palette was literally giving way after many many years of use.

And these are the colors I used:

I just wanted a wash of the blue color on my lids, nothing too intense, hence I did not use any colored base.

Brows and lower eyes not done yet.  Shall show you how I pimp the false lashes:

This is something I like to do to add extra volume to the outer corner of my eyes, and my fave method is to cut this Shu Uemura smokey layer lash in half, and stick it to the outer corner of the full lash.

And this is the completed eye look:

And on my lips, this is Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited PK356.

But I blotted it off, so what's left is a rosy pink stain, so as not to clash too much with the blue eyes.

    And the whole completed look:

All products used [Shu Uemura unless specified otherwise]

Base - mousse base in PINK, giorgio armani lasting uv foundation, chanel loose powder in 10

    Cheeks - guerlain blush G

Lips - rouge unlimited pk 356

Eyes - refer to palette shown in the pictures [can't remember the color numbers]

Lashes - Ardel 120, smokey layers, Clinique lower lash mascara

Liner - MAC Blackline, Heavy Rotation liquid liner

Brows - Hard Formula pencil in seal brown

Today, I went out with the sibs, first time in a long long time that the four of us are out together, what with travelling and injuries preventing us from hanging out as a group. Also met Amy, Jen, and Jerlaine briefly to collect my Paula Choice loot.  Then I bought something at Tangs Chanel counter, and also a bunch of nail polish.....and here are some pics of the day:

And this is our pimping ride for the day --- woots!  I drove everyone home in this!  :)

That's all, and hope you enjoyed this entry.

    Thanks for looking!

LOTD: Neutral Colors Feat. NARS Madly Blush

    Hi hi,

Similar LOTD to yesterday's reverse smokey eyes.  But different cheeks and lips combo.

If you haven't seen the nails in this picture, click HERE to find out more.

    Products used:

Foundation - Sana Pore Putty Base, Maquillage Long Lasting Stick Foundation, MUFE Concealer Palette, MUFE Super Matte Loose Powder

Cheeks - NARS Madly and Nico blushes

I find Madly to be a very natural light tan color, which I can just slap on without worrying about being too crazy colored.  This is very different from the other NARS colors I own.  It is neither pink nor peach/corals.. and gives you a healthy sun-kissed glow (at least I think so.  Haha).

Eyes - NARS eyeshadow primer, MUFE Aqua Cream #14, MAC Love to Love MES (I used the darkest shade all over lids, and lightest on the browbone)

Liner and Lashes - MUFE #19 Aqua Eyes pencil, set with MAC Style Influencer MES (used the darkest blue in that to set), Maybelline Volume Express, Palz False Lashes

Lips - MAC Angel lipstick (frost)

Heading out to IKEA with the sibs for random look-see and dinner soon!

And if you haven't take part in the 600 followers huge giveaway, click the link in the sidebar!  :)

    Thanks for looking!

Playing with OCC Lip Tars (Swatches & A Couple of LOTDs)

Hi hi!  All about OCC Lip Tars in this entry! I have decided to open a mini spree for buying OCC Lip Tars... seeing how there has  been enough interest going on around here for me to do so.  The 'spree' order entry will be up in the NEXT entry!!!

(LINK HERE to order once active)

You can also click on Claire (eclecticsatire)'s entry on her collection of OCC lip tars HERE to see more.

You can order OCC Lip Tars from the Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics website HERE, or wait a bit, and join my little spree to share shipping costs, especially if you just want to order one or two pieces!

I only have 3 of the lip tars which I ordered from Gwen's spree sometime back.  I went for the bolder colors, and I think my fave would be Grandma.  I got the blue one, in RX just for the fun of it, and maybe as a Halloween costume look (though I don't know what will be my theme this year yet).  So here are my lip swatches and color description:

These lip tars are hyperpigmented, and if you use them like a gloss... then you will not get the desired results.  In fact, it would be a big mess.  You just need a tiny amount on a lip brush, and paint it over your lips.  I did not use any lip pencil to line my lips, and just kind of free-handed the lip shape with the firm synthetic brush I used.

They are also meant to be mixed to create the exact color, or create new colors to suit your whim and fancy.  I think Temptalia attempted  the  mixing of colors on her website.  But I am not so adventurous, and I prefer to just get colors which I can just use on its own.

And so, just to show you how they look like, on an actual LOTD.... the rest of my face is pretty much bare..I have foundation and all that on... but no color at all that distract from the pow-wow color of the lip tars.

So, if you are interested in getting these lip tars, do keep a lookout for the next immediate entry! :)

That's all, and thanks for looking! I hope this has been helpful!
