About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

NARS Gaiety Blush [Swatches, Comparisons & LOTD]

    Hi!

I purchased NARS Gaiety Blush (from their Spring 2012 collection) through my gf in Hong Kong.  It is a matte bright pink blush, not too cool toned.  It is described as 'bright candy pink' on the NARS site.  I personally think it is quite wearble on me, and gives a nice pop of color without looking too clownish.  It doesn't look as bold at other NARS hot pink blushes (think Desire - which is described as a delicate pink - I have seen the blush before in stores, it is a pretty bold pink color)

The texture is fine, and not as super duper intensely pigmented like some of the other NARS blushes.

I have been wearing this blush for the past week (most days anyway), and I just dust it on my cheeks with a kabuki blush.

This blush immediately reminded me of Dior's Spring 2012 blush, which is the Rosy Glow.  They look really similar in the pan though, as shown below:

Swatched next to each other, the Dior shade seems a tad lighter, more pastel as compared to the NARS Gaiety. But then again, the Dior powder is a little color adjusting, and warms up as I wear it throughout the day.

A quick LOTD showing the blush in action:

Foundation: Shiseido white lucent target base, Guerlain Gold foundation, Lancome Teint Miracle Loose Powder

Lips: Tom Ford Blush Nude (mixed with a little of Illamasqua Sonnet lipstick) --- not liking this combo, too matte and dry, and too nude, I think I am used to wearing super glossy moisturising lipsticks of late.

Eyes: base Laura Mercier Flax, base GA ETK in #13, Dior palette in Bleu de Paris, Liners Laura Mercier Caviar Stick in Sapphire, Clinique Lower Lash Mascara

Concealer - Laura Mercier secret camouflage concealer - I love it very much, but it is not not my HG like the Cle de Peau stick concealer

Blush: NARS Gaiety - I slapped this on with Chanel Kabuki brush, quite liberally

That's all and thanks for looking.

Blushers: Illamasqua Chased & NARS Mata Hari (Dupes, Swatches, etc)

    Hi!

I used Illamasqua Chased blusher this morning for the first time, and when I opened the item, it struck me that the color in the pan bears an uncanny resemblance to another blusher which I have been using recently, and that is the NARS Mata Hari blusher.  So I decide to do a comparison of the two.  I am aware that one is not a cheaper dupe for the other, and neither are they any easier to get here in Singapore (unlike the MAC Devil vs VOV No5 blushes which I talked about before).

    Here are some pictures:

In the pan, they look identical.  The same rosy pink color, and both are matte shades.

Both contains 4.5g of product.  I think the NARS blush retails for US$22, and the Illamasqua retails for US$23. (If I remember correctly)

Finger swatches.  Chased feels creamier and smoother when my finger came into contact with the product, while Mata Hari feels a little powdery. Both swatch almost identical on the finger.  But if you look carefully, Chased seems a more blue-tone and lighter.

This is where the difference really shows up.  Mata Hari swatches almost reddish pink on the hands, while Chased is still very pink.  And both colors are super pigmented.  So while they look identical, they aren't really that similar when you apply.  I can't show cheek swatches here as I am at work, and I already  have my makeup on.  I used Chased this morning, and it is very  very pigmented, and I have to use a very light hand with this color.   I think MAC dupes for these colors might be Pink Swoon, Angel (which is matte but  much much lighter).

This is NARS Nico, and I have been loving and using as a glowy cheeks highlight product.  It blends into my skin tone, and is very smooth and creamy to apply.  It looks a little shimmery in the pan, and I was wary of it being chalky and all.. but it actually is so finely milled, and I can just dust it all over my cheeks, blending and all that.  I think I might hit pan on this very soon, cos I just find it so easy to use!

You can't really see the color of Nico on my hand here, but I hope you can tell there is a little patching of glow going on.  I likey.

Thanks for reading, and I hope this has been helpful.

I will be drawing the winner for the MAC Viva Glam Gaga lipstick very soon!  :)
