About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

No ads, no paid links etc please.  I am in charge of all content and pictures here.

I am not a makeup artist, nor do I have any professional training in makeup.

Haul! Nail Polish: OPI, Essie, China Glaze, Orly

This is a haul entry with 2 batches of batches of nail polish which I ordered from Gwen and Michelle's spree organiser.  Big Thanks to both girls for being super FAB & Efficient organisers!!

The nail polish are mainly from the Essie Resort Collection, and the OPI Shrek Forever Collection.   Lotsa cool greens and blues in this entry!!
I also got a couple of colors which I always wanted, such as White Out & Recycle.  And also a couple which are re-purchases ---- yup, it is hard to believe but some colors I actually finish using and love it so much I have to buy them again.  Examples: Malanga Wine (prolly  my first OPI  color), Bare it in Trafalgar Square (4th bottle), Sand in my Suit (sis's fave manicure color).  I also got a couple of bottles for my gf which are not pictured here.

From the OPI Shrek Forver Collection: (of which you have seen Funky Dunkey a few entries back HERE)

I did not get the light purple and the darker blue, because I thought I have something similar in my collection already.  I was debating whether to get Fiercely Fiona, but decided that for collection's sake, I need Fiona to pair with Shrek!  Yup.  The sucker that I am.

Next, from the Essie Resort collection:

I did not get Splash of Grenadine (a magenta color) because I think I will wear these greens and blues more often.

And the randoms.  I have always wanted to get Recycle since last year, but somehow never ordered.  It is darker than On the Prowl from MAC's Hello Kitty collection which I have, and also less blueish grey from YSL's Stormy Grey.  I like grey nails too!

And Amy told me that White Out is not the opaque liquid paper thick white color, she said not even 10 coats will make it stark white .  She did say that I might use it as a 'base' for when I use paler shades. SIGH.  I thought I can apply a stark white color and paste my black stickers on top for a Ben & Jerry nail look.

    And a few more randoms:

And as I am doing this post, I realised there are dupes within this haul and also from my current stash.  DUH DUH DUH.  It is a sure sign that I have way too much. I must try these 3 colors out and compare them when the lighting is better (over the weekend, on Sat morning, which is when I usually do my nail dupes entries).  And right now, I can't wait to rock Who the Shrek are you, and also paint Fiercely Fiona on alternate fingers.  I am going to watch it this weekend in 3D with the sibs.  Who else is also catching this show?

That's all and thanks for looking!

    Nails Story: CG's Peachy Keen & Essie's Van D'Go

    Hi!

Just to show what colors I will be wearing on my nails in the next few days.  I feel like I have nothing to say, cos in real life now, I still can't talk without coughing 12983192089012890 times.

This is just a swatch picture.  I will eventually paint both colors on random nails later on.  So that I can enjoy both at the same time!  :)

I know I should prolly sleep the day (&cough) away but for some strange reason, I am super keen to check out the Chanel Coco Lipsticks which are launched TODAY.

I might a collective haul coming later today?  Not too sure yet.   Keep posted!

Nails Story: Dupes! That complicated hard to describe brown/ grey/ purple?

I got these two colors recently, but I don't think I ever showed them side by side before.  I really like Chinchilly.  It reminds me of a creamy yummy bubble milk tea, maybe a little more greyish.  And Mink Muffs is a lot darker than pictures show.

And while applying and swatching Mink Muffs, I am reminded of two other shades, which are Metro Chic and You Don't Know Jacques! So, let's take a closer look.

In the above picture, from L to R, Metro Chic, Mink Muffs, You Don't Know Jacques!

There is something about a nail color that is a combination of "purple, taupe, grey, brown, grey" that just suck us in, isn't it??  And if you think about it, the colors alone doesn't even sound very appealing for nail colors, traditionally speaking.  However, when they come together in the perfect balance, or combination, mixture, what have you... the end results just seems so pretty, but in a very chic, and modern way.  It makes people take a second look, like, what is THAT color really?  I know that will suck me into buying it.  The same goes for that perfect shade of nude... not too beigy, not too pinky, etc... the creamier it is, the thicker and more opaque it is, I am all for it.  And the same goes for that lavender, lilac shade.. not too blue, not too violet...just a touch of grey, etc etc..... and the list goes on.. you know what I mean, if you are my fellow nail geek.  LOL.

That's all, and if you have any specific questions, leave them in the comments below.  Thanks for reading!

If you have other requests for dupes and comparisons, let me know, I will feature them--if they are in my stash.  :)

Spring Nail Colors: Why all Pastels???

Don't get me wrong, you know I love all my milky pastel cream shades, but why is it that every nail company is putting out all the similar range of colors?

Cases in point -- and I am sure I have missed out a couple more collections, but these come to my mind right now.

First, we have the China Glaze UP collection

Then, the Essie Art of Spring collection:

    From Illamasqua:

From Barry M (which seems a little late on the milky pastel bandwagon)

Colors, if you are interested: from R to L np306 is Blueberry Ice Cream, np307 is Lemon Ice Cream, np308 is Berry Ice Cream np309 is Strawberry Ice Cream, and the Mint Green is a re-promote from last year, which Barry M says is a cheap way to copy the Chanel Jade.

And I guess another trend which is on the brink of overkill would be all the Alice in Wonderland collections, which OPI, China Glaze, etc etc... I love the movie and all that... but well.. yup.

So my question is, what collections/ color ranges do you wish to see coming next??  Wish away!!

Speaking of which, I want to clean off my Jade color, and paint a new coat of (I can't decide yet) on my fingernails tonight.

Morning Nails: Jade is the New Starbucks??

Just a totally frivolous non-MU related picture of the day.

This is what happens if you had Starbucks almost everyday the whole week, and/or hanged at Starbucks like three times within a DAY.

My gf made this ridiculous but oh so true observation last night.  Check out the picture, and have a good laugh!
