About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

MAC Spring Color Forecast & Outing: SHOW ME THE CAKE!!

I totally grabbed this first pic from Diana's blog entry.  Click here for more pictures and how the outing went!

I was such a dumbo, I brought my camera out, hoping to take lotsa fun pictures and have a chance to say "look at the lens" Chantana style, but failed miserably when I left the SD card in my other computer at work.  ARGH! Imagine my frustrations as I took out my camera while I was in the cashier Q (yes I bought something from the new collection ), wanting to ask Chantana how the flash settings work etc etc when I saw the message "NO MEMORY CARD".  What a boo.

So yup, I don't have pictures of the actual outing, but those of you who have read the updates from the other onsugarettes must have a very vivid and detailed update by now.. seeing as it is already Sunday (how time flies!) and I am only starting to ramble about it.  :p  It all seems so 5 minutes ago!

First of all, I was super super happy and overwhlemed by all the goodies which were given to me by the lovely ladies~

I finally got to meet Michelle and Kim, whom I have recently 'spreed' with, and I have been reading Kim's blog for sometime, her haul entries are mega awesome!  She brought along the nail polishes (my haul entry on that later on), and thank you, Kim for organising this!   And Michelle (icefrost) is our MAC Give me Liberty of London spree organiser.  Really admire them for having the courage and taking the effort to do these sprees, I can't imagine the amount of tracking and admin involved in sprees!  :)

Also got to meet Gwen, she is so cute and petite, and her face is amazingly fresh and flawless (no makeup I think!)  *jealous*  I must check out her ongoing sprees on Live Journals.... if I can get round to it, and navigate my way around there.  :)

I also met Vion, I was saying hi to her at MAC, and she was so cheerful and bubbly, and the first thing she said was "I am a fan" -- seriously?! I feel starstruck! Haha... she is so friendly and warm, and well, I think you should totally start your own blog, and share your shopping raving too! :)  Also, your clean and flawless skin after day's work is really worthy of my envy, your hair which seems to fall so neatly, I can never get mine to stay in one place for long.

And Debbie who came and went like a flash... you are so sweet, and I wish we had more time to hang out!  And you look super cute, with your outfit, and shoes (yup, I scanned your footwear! hahhaha).

Not forgetting Wirda who came and went like a flash too, but not before we raved a bit about lash extensions.  She was rocking a set of pretty full ones, but you rock them really well!! :)

Azza came too, though I didn't get to talk much to you at all.. next time next time!

And the biggest regret is that Linn had to cancel out.... she was so looking forward to the outing, and the 2 times I talked to her at work, we were raving about how fun it would be to meet up again and all.. le sigh!

The outing was totally happening, and as with bigger group outings, I guess we are a little more 'used to' having our conversations cut short, interrupted, hijacked, etc etc by now...I hope you all didn't feel weird about that, cos I think I felt very strange initially, rude almost, if my attention was suddenly diverted in the middle of a statement, or we suddenly had to switch topics etc ... yup..

To the rest whom I have had the pleasure of meeting before, you know who you are (Janet, Munirah, Diana, Sarah, Chantana, Amy, Clara, Kas, AB) so, yup.. WOOT!

I shan't go much more into the outing...you can click on the links at the end of this post to read about what happened that night.

This is that SHOW ME THE CAKE moment... after a couple of days of celebrating my birthday and also experience from celebrating Sarah's birthday quite recently, it is very easy to develop skin thick enough for me to know that Amy and Chantana went off scheming (at the icing room no less), and Diana was carrying something... and so I had to burst out that line in a Jerry Maguire moment.  SHOW ME THE CAKE!  LOL.

This is what I ended up with.. as I was re-sizing the pictures, I realised there are at least 8 presents in total. I really want to say a very very sincere and heartfelt THANK YOU to everybody for the kind thoughts, and just being so FAB! Not just the presents themselves, but the gesture, the thought, the everything.  :)

The following pictures appear in no particular of merit or preference, I lurve them all!

Last week, Sarah wanted to give me a Bobbi Brown eyeshadow, because she said it is soooo me.. and it turned out she gave me a huge bunch of pigment samples, a couple of lipsticks, fake lashes, etc along with such a sweet note!!  Thanks Sarah!!!  Then she got me 2 packs of the nail art stickers at Nature Republic during the outing.

For more about the outing, click on the following links:

Michelle "Meeting the Onsugarettes and other lovely ladies"

Chantana "Meet Up: Mac Spring Colors Collection..."

    Kim "Meeting the Onsugarettes!"

    Kas "Birthday Antics...."

I prolly missed out a couple, but will update as and when I come across more.

    Thanks so much for reading!

Haul & Outing! (China Glaze, MAC)

    Hey hey!

So I met Amy, Kas, and Chantana last evening, and couldn't believe that we were til yakking and laughing til it was almost 12 before we took our cabs home.  LOL.

The agenda is for Amy to pass us our China Glaze haul from her spree organiser, and big thanks to Amy for being so helpful and efficient with this :)

Then the MAC All Races, Sexes, (... watever) and MAC in Lilyland collections were out, and I was texting the girls about it.. so everyone can get her hands on the products asap.  Haha.

I didn't have my camera with me last night, but if you read Chantana's entry, she has pretty much covered everything and more.  Lotsa pictures on her blog too!

In the  picture below (which I grabbed from Chantana's entry) :  And no, I wasn't trying to stifle a yawn, was laughing way too much, and had to cover my mouth.. cos Kas had to get out her glittery nail polish and pose with it.. and she couldn't stop laughing, and I got infected, and Amy just couldn't help herself too.

This is my MAC All (....) haul.  Pretty modest, mainly brow products, as Sarah predicted.  And I got Personal Style, which I knew I wanted before this collection came out.  Beauty powder blushers are amazingly smooth.

From MAC In Lilyland, I wasn't crazy about the floral stuff, but I can't resist this cremeblend blush... I tried the fuschia one, forgot the name, it look a little dull on my skin, perhaps the magenta color is too much, as Kas mentioned.  I still prefer my Azalea better.. it is the same shade but in powder form, of course.

The stars of the show, my China Glaze haul, these are from the UP and AWAY collection.

Yup.. that's about it.. I had so much fun last night, and it was great chance to talk to everyone in detail, and really just rant and rave about everything and anything.   :)  Thanks girls!!  We should totally do this more!

    Girls Gone Makeup Shopping~

    Hi!

So, the 8 of us met up today, let me recall the names:

    1. Wirda
    2. Diana
    3. Chantana
    4. Joyce
    5. Clara
    6. Amy
    7. Kas
    8. Myself (Sophia)

I shan't even go into HOW I got to town this evening..... ok, maybe I should.  First there was the massive jam, it cost me 3 times as much cab fare to get to town today.  Geesh.  Then just before I alighted, I realised of all days,I left my money purse at work, and I had to call Kas to rescue me.. so she and Amy rushed quickly from the RMK counter to the cab stand, to pass me some cash for the fare.  Thankfully I had an atm card to withdraw money, or else it would be such a downer.  So yeah, thank you to Amy and Kas for coming to my rescue, and not charging interest.. haha. :)

So we went to RMK, and Chantana came along, and we went on a swatching spree of their bases, glitter eyeshadows etc etc... and Amy hauled... heh.

I wanted to buy a pair of Shu Uemura lashes.. but anyway that's another story, and I would get that on Friday instead.

Finally, we met up with Diana, Clara, Wirda and Joyce...they were at ION Sephora... and then we went for dinner... basically I satisfied my siew mai & yogurt craving and that's all I ate during dinner.  I think the beef noodles looked super delish though, maybe next time I should try that.

We didn't raid any counters today, except maybe at Muji and Watsons... but I think we were good today.  We kind of raided the MAC counter at Sephora, but they were about to close anyway, so nobody bothered us,which was good.

And the following pictures were taken before the guard came to stop us... oh well it's too late, too bad, we got all the footage and photographs we wanted.  :)

That's Chantana's glossy hair...and see how Di and Kas are super happy and

I am sure Di is laughing at what Kas is saying here - is it the brows gone wrong thingy?

Di, Kas and I taking pictures in front of the mirror... and Kas said she looks like a bi*tch in this picture, but I think she looks cute as always.  Pay no attention to her brows ok?

Kas, Amy and I.. gosh, ok, I tried out the MUFE brow corrector thingy (which costs a whopping $65)... the color doesn't really match my brows, but I like how it really colors your brows. If you want to dye your brows without actually doing it, this product seriously works.

And because dear Kas is so conscious of her brows gone wrong experiment with the MUFE brow product, she wants to take a picture together without her brows.  :)

And me taking a picture of me without my zit, I look like I am slapping my face.  Haha.

All in all, what a fun evening!  Seriously, it feels like I am hanging out with a group of BFFs which I never know I have.  Have already decided when is our next meet up... which is hopefully when our little sprees and stuff come in, and we meet again to swap, etc... and keeping my fingers crossed it will be before the Chinese New Year period.  Can't wait to get my hands on the china glaze stuff!

And lastly, thanks to Kas for giving me the nail polish (reminds me of MAC humid e/s), the MAC samples (Melon, Chocolate Brown, Mauvement, Gold Stroke) which is totally cool, I have heard YT people raving about Melon, and Mauvement.  Must try them out soon!!   And the card, is super awesome sweet!  :)

Here is to long lasting friendship, everyone!

P/S: I know I am getting this up super fast, but I just want to rave about the outing!  Heh. Yea to the weekend!

PP/S:  I NEED TO GET THE CANON G-11.  Period. Thanks to Chantana, who whipped out her camera again, and told us to look at the lens....

    Fun Times at the PARTY~

    Yo!

So we had the party/ gathering which Diana organised - really admire her enthusiasm and energy.  Thank you Diana!

And also big thanks to Sarah for giving all of us the makeup voucher, and organising the game segment.  It was funny trying to count numbers and getting into groups.  :p

There were so many of us, it was near impossible to get to talk to everybody.  I wish I had been able to talk more to Roseanne, Jasmine, Maddy, Wirda...but some of us had to leave early, and there were so many conversations going on at the same time, we could barely finish one sentence before someone else asked another question, or start another topic.

I also met Chantana (everbluec) and Kas (cocomotion) for the first time today and it was like meeting old friends, even though Chantana was a little shy :) , and Kas was soooo funny with her stories, and she was asking us for opinions on the products, and we all went BUY BUY GET GET... soooo not helping her to stay focused... we raided the MAC counter, the Chanel counter, The Makeup Store... very busy swatching products and raving about colors etc.

The swap was definitely the highlight of the whole gathering.   It turned out to be an amazing coincidence that both Chantana and I got each other's present.  And she had already gotten me my own little present, and she won my giveaway, so we had 2 presents for each other!

This is the group picture we took outside Body Shop, and there were onlookers just gawking at us, cos there were perhaps 10+ cameras in the 'Q'!

This is a picture of Diana and I during the swap segment.  She is sooo hilarious with her poses, and expressions as we each opened our present.

This is Wirda and I.  I lurve her style, she totally rocks the tights and boots!  And her cute bolt headband!

This is Amy and I, my fellow nail polish junkie!

This is Ediati and I, my game partner.  We managed to get one answer correct, which was 'my family doesn't know I make YT videos and have a makeup blog' (answer is Maddy).   And who could guess Sarah went to convent school for 10 years of her life??  :)

All in all, it was a great outing, and the time just flew by, before we knew it, it was time to split.... *more hugs and byes etc*

I went to the outing with a bag full of little pressies, but it is strange how I ended up with a fuller bag home.

Just to show what I picked up at the Body Shop sale, they had 1-for-1 on the cranberry scrub... so I got 2 ( = 4 tubes) of the cranberry scrub.  This is the best time to stock up, and all my siblings lurve this scrub.

While we were invading the MAC counter, Joyce, Amy and myself wandered off, and I wanted to check out the Chanel loose powder ($72), but  bought this nail polish instead.  Have been looking for a color like this, but somehow I always ended up buying the too bright orange which I would only use on my toes.  But this is a very coral color....can't wait to try it out.

And these are the pressies from Chantana. She got me the VOV (N5) blusher.  Sara says this reminds her of NARS Exhibit A, and Maddy says this is the kind of red blusher (MAC's Frankly Scarlet) she is looking for.  I did a quick swatch on the spot, and the color is pretty full on.

Then for the swap, she got the VOV eyeshadow - the packaging is exactly the same as the NYX palettes!  The colors are all shimmery and vibrant... and in particular, the brown shade looks like MAC Tempting eyeshadow.   There is also a Majolica Majorca automatic liner, the color is GD005, which is a gold liner.  It stays put on my hand after I tried it... much like MAC's liquidblast liners.  I like how you 'click' the pen and the product flows into the felt tip.  Very very cool product, and something which I don't have in my collection.

And it was so sweet of Eka (Reyenal)  to give each of us something.  I got this nail polish!   :)   It was all wrapped up, and I thought it was a big candy or something.

Update: And I forgot to mention, I also got the $50 makeup voucher (not to buy makeup with. but Sarah would actually do your make up for an event at $50).  Super generous of her, cos all of us got one voucher!  Click here for her site.

Oh... I am sure the other bloggers will be raving abou today's outing too, and I can't wait to see your pictures and updates!

And if I got any of your names wrong, or anything, leave below in the comments.  My apologies in advance.

    Thanks for reading!

Meet & Greet, MAC Love that Look Haul, Rambling

    HI HI!!

Super excited, got home not long ago, and I am so glad to be able to finally settle in and do my leisurely stuff.  Been on a mad rush in the last 48 hours, meeting deadlines, meetings, appointments, etc etc.  But among the long list of stuff which I had to do, I am most excited about today afternoon's onsugar meet & greet session.

Firstly, I got myself LOST at the maze at the Raffles City basement.  I somehow got the idea that Maddy, Joyce (forensia) & Amy (purplio) were already waiting at Guardian, but it didn't occur to me they are actually at the Citilink outlet.  Silly of me.  So I made my way in the sea of red t-shirts pple who were going to the NDP preview to look for them gosh.

The first 2 girls I spotted were Maddy and Joyce, because I already recognise them from their blogs.  And it was also great to meet Amy in person, it was kind of cute how she was telling us her avatar is a capsule. The 3 of them look seriously fresh faced from home, cos I was just being totally unglam, sweating and just very 'rushed' and also a little nervous  :) Then we were joined by Linn (spelling??) and then lastly Diana - the first thing I noticed is her pink/bronze eyeshadow, artfully blended! Heh.

So the first 'mission' we had to accomplish was to hit Stamford House to check out the Fre3b or something store, and also the MUFE store.  The Fr3b store was crowded - there was a Q, and apparently you have to pay $28 to be a member before you are allowed into the store to browse and pick your samples.  But why pay -- the name of the whole concept is fre3b?  FREE??  Anyways... I wasn't very sure how the whole concept works... so I shall leave it to Diana, Joyce et al to explain further in their entries.  But we all paid for our Watsons card..including myself.

    * I didn't take much pictures of today's outing - was lugging my heavy bag all over and kind of too lazy to keep whipping out my camera -- but hands down to Diana who is really a pro at snapping covert paparazzi style pics. That was priceless.  After a while I think I got a bit conscious and always look pose-ready, as Linn noticed while we were on the bus.

So...... anyway... since Fr3b was kind of a letdown, we went to MUFE.  Bascially, we went around the store and swatched stuff, and talk about MU for about 20 min.  The staff is prolly kind of pissed, cos we didn't look like we are going to buy anything and we were just in our own world  chatting away.  LOL.

Then.... we head to town, specifically ION.. and to be even more exact, Sephora.  Haha.... there, we were joined by partialtopink (Grenda?)  *** soooo sorrry if I got any of your names all wrong or mixed up. She turned up with this HUGE mac bag... and the second she said all the new collections were out at TANGS mac, we were like GO TO MAC --  OK, more like I went OK LET"S HEAD TO MAC NOW  NOW... and suggested thta we JAYWALK across..haha... but no, we didnt, Linn, Diana and I walked so fast, by the time we were on the escalator, we  realised that we lost the other half of the group.  Within seconds we were swatching the new collections like mad.  I quickly made up my mind about getting Style Snob & Fashion eyeshadows (starflash) and then after a little persuasion from the MUA, Russian Black liner.  Thanks to my vouchers, I paid less than $20  for the stuff I got.

And anyway.... please, tell me your name, the gorgeous girl wearing the Club eyeshadow, for I really didn't catch your real name! It was kind of surreal meeting everyone in real life, I recall everyone by either their screen names, blog posts, comments etc etc but to match the faces, to the real names and all that, it is like getting to know a new class at the start of the year. :p   So.... please tell me!!

** at this point, I am thinking in video terms I would be just yakking and you don't need to subject yourselves to actually reading this epic post***

Maybe I shall post a pic of the stuff I got today to  break the chunk of text.

Yup.... so... after MAC, we went back to ION and continued our exploration.  Then Linn had to leave, so we took a group picture.  Again very amazed at how Diana is super quick and appointing a random guy to take our group picture.  :)

Anyways...(I wonder if anyone is still reading) .. Joyce, Diana, Grinda(sp?) and I went to taka watsons, and we --- no, Diana FOUND!! the Revlon matte collection.  We swatched the stuff, and Joyce got some eyeliners for her friend and herself.  Then we all went to MOS burger to rest/drink/wait....we talked about YT gurus, hauling, etc etc...later on  my sister came along, and shortly after we parted ways. It was just Joyce, my sis and myself, wandered to Tangs again, before we said our goodbyes.

All in all, like I mentioned, it was really surreal meeting everyone in real life -- all of you ladies are super sweet & gorgeous, and it is really nice (ok overused word I know) we are meeting up etc over our love for MU and getting to know about each other through Onsugar.  And also how it felt like we have known each other for longer time, and how we can just rave about all the makeup stuff..  And also somewhat unnerving (in a good way) that everyone knew about each other's product rants and raves.  Haha..I look forward to the next outing for sure!  I have so much more to say... but I think the other ladies will also be 'reporting' about today from their point of view.

P/s I will be posting a updated entry on the MUFE foundation review/ramble, since I think some of you are wondering about it.:)

Pictures Time!! The only time I took out my cam.. so we were all busy snapping pictures on the bus, and for s.ome reason the bus decided to move whenever I want to take a picture and it turned out blurry

    Linn & Diana

Joyce & Amy  --- Maddy and I were sitting next to each other, and it was impossible to take a proper pic.

That's all, and if you are still reading, thumbs up to you for your amazing patience  :)
