About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

    Simple Look & "New Hair"

    Hi!

I was looking at my post from 2 days ago using inexpensive products, and I was thinking "how SILLY"??!  Yeah, used inexpensive products, but look at the AMOUNT of products I used to create the look?  Duh.   Maybe I should do a challenge, like to create a look using a maximum of 5/8/10 products or whatever.

Anyway, this is a more wearable, if you have only 10 minutes to do your make up and leave, kind of look. Basically some definition to the eyes and cheeks, and no lashes/ no mascara.

This is a little similar to the look from yesterday but more muted.

Colors used (ALL MAC unless specified)

Mylar e/s, Seedy Pearl e/s, Plummage e/s, Apri Grey e/s   ** Loves Plummage!!  Beautiful matte peacock green/grey colour.

    Loreal Superliner

    Cheeks: Blonde MSF

    Lips: Lavender Whip

And my new hair sort of.... I have been sporting the same style for YEARS.... I love my layers, my stylist cuts it just nice, so my limp hair doesn't curl or look flatter than it already it.  As you can tell, I am not really into hair stuff, except for maintaining the color and texture.

Actually I was sort of inspired by Silk Spectre's hair from the movie Watchmen.  Besides being mesmerised by her long and lean legs each time she prances around, I was also very distracted by her long flowing straight hair, which is cut very bluntly, without layers.  To make this look work for me, I kept my side swept bangs and of course I couldn't possibly color my hair flaming red like her, but I had my layers cut away, though not too much-- cos I still want the length.  I like how my hair hangs straight, and I think the blackness of my hair brings out the 'harsh' cut.

    * please ignore ratty tacky zebra/leopard print singlet.

Not too 'straight' yet cos the sides of my hair is shorter cos of the old layers, but it is much more blunt/even than my previous chunky layered cut.

    Thanks for reading!

Looking of the Day using inexpensive products

    HI!!

Just wanted to do a bright summery look using only drugstore and other inexpensive products - however, I did have to use my MAC brushes to apply the products.  I also use a whole lot of other brands besides MAC, both high-end and cheaper brands out there. I suppose at the end of the day, we all just want to look pretty without spending loads of money, right?

These are the stuff I used -- sorry I don't have prices of these products.

    Face:

Canmake UV White Clear Essence Base

    Maybelline Pure Fluid Mineral Foundation

6 pc contour and highlight palette (I used a lighter shade to set the foundation)

Canmake Color Stick (07) to correct undereyes

    Maybelline Highlight and Conceal Duo

    Cheeks:

Maybelline Expert Wear Blusher in 50 Dusty Mauve

    Lips:

NYX Round Lipsticks in 504 Harmonica

    Eyes:

    -Base

All over the lids Majolica Majoroca GD821 Gold Cream Shadow

Maybelline Impact Express Smoot Pencil Shadow in the blue one

-Eyeshadows from the Coastal Scents 78 palette, I also used this to fill in my brows.

    -Liner

Silky Girl Long Wearing Eyeliner in 04 Navy Blue

    -Lashes

My usual falsies, and also Maybelline's Stiletto Mascara for lower lashes.  It really does lengthen!

    Pictures time!!

Cute Yellow Bracelet from the same Japanese $2 store I mentioned in my stickers post.

I am off work for a week , and I am sooooooo tempted to fly off to hong kong for shopping this weekend!!  :P

That's all, and thanks for reading!

Look of the day with 26 pc palette and updates

Just a picture post... I used my new 26 pc palette.  This look came off darker and more coppery than I would have like, but today I used it again, with a pinkish and neutral shade.  Will post more looks with this new baby.

This is a card and a vintage brooch/ pin thingy which my cousin sent all the way from Cambridge where she is doing her Masters now.  She bought the vintage pin at the Saatchi gallery in London.  Speaking of which, watch out for a major UK haul because she is coming back in a couple of weeks for a break and I sent her a MAJOR UK drugstore makeup shopping list.

    Woot!  I am outta here.

    Just because...

And because today is shopping day (hey, I ain't retail_therapy for nothing :p) I got a new blouse. I tried this out a couple of weeks ago, but but I didn't buy it then because I thought the price is kinda steep, but I managed to get this for almost 50% off the original price, because of the mall promo for cardmembers thingy.  Man, am I glad I didn't get the blouse then.

"Fairytale Shirt" from French Connection.  Btw, I lurve FCUK..I would say maybe 40% of my wardrobe is FCUK. The cutting of their stuff just fit me so well all the time!  And their prints are always so cute and they do greys and olives perfectly.

Some random posing after I tried on some of my new products featured in the previous collective haul.

Products featured: Ben Nye concealer, Maybelline Concealer & Highlighter, Cherry Red Lashes, MAC HK Pink Fish TLC, MAC Intenso Blusher,

Weekend Post: Ramblings, foundation routine, nails and looks

Hi!  It is taking me forever, to upload all these pictures and stuff, the network is incredibly slow and unstable.

First up, an updated foundation routine.  I am using my MAC109 to apply my liquid foundation.  It is a dense, dome shaped brush, and packs on the product evenly.  I mixed my MUFE and SFF together to get the correct shade.

I love this brush, because it is good for both liquid and powder products.

From ELLE's March issue: runway makeup looks.

So I decided to recreate the looks shown above. Of course, I know I don't look like the model, in terms of facial features, but I like the colours, and how the lower lids is kept to a dark smokey color.

This is what I came up with.  Loves it, but not sure if I would actually venture out of the house with this look, it is much darker and intense in real life than these pictures show.

    New Gel Nails

I opt for a thicker white tip, so it will last a few more infill sessions.  This may seem awfully frivolous, high maintainence, and not to mention pricey, but it is a nail fetish phase I am going through, I am not going to do this in the long term.

If I am going out later, this is what I am wearing: The Stowaway Quad from the MAC naughty nauticals collection, and a nude lippy which I bought from a Metro Station in Paris (Chatelet Les Halles), totally random I know, but it is only 2 euros, and very pretty. I set the whole look with my MUFE HD powder, and it really makes my whole face picture ready.

That's all, and hope you enjoyed reading!

    Sooty Smokey Eyes for Day?!

Yes. you can, if you keep the rest of the face simple.  I just smudged eyeliner all over on the top and bottom lids.

I used Smolder eyekohl by MAC, and also throw on my falsies.  I also used some Carbon Plumage e/s by MAC to help to smudge.

    Lips:

Barry M 129 and Ever So Rich gloss by MAC

I think I was kind of inspired by the following face charts I saw at temptalia.com
