About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. Nail Colour Swatches

HI!  I guess it is pretty obvious my latest craze is nail polish, my last 5 or 6 posts are all nail related.

If you missed the post on my transdesign.com haul, click here. This is just a swatch post.

The following color is very very sheer. On the big toe is on its own and on the 2nd toe, I applied it over Agent Lavender.

From L to R - A Grape Fit , Do you Lilac it?, Done out in Deco.

In the bottle L to R, Done out in Deco, A Grape Fit, Do you Lilac it?

Which of these is your fave?

The haul that took 2 months

HI everyone! I am super excited now.

*You may want to skip the following LONG story.*  but the short story is my nail polish haul finally arrived.

Sometime in March, I ordered 9 bottles of nail polish from ebay, a power seller at that.  Each bottle, plus shipping cost me an average of $5.50 each.  Which isn't cheap, but I can't get them in Singapore, and the OPI colours usually cost way more than $5.50 each.  (All $$ in US dollars btw) But I waited more than a month, and the package never arrived.  i refrained from leaving negative feedback as I was somehow very sure the seller did ship the package.  It was more likely that the package somehow got lost in the mail.  Or whatever.  But I contacted the seller 3 times, and I never got any reply.  Til one fine day, 2 weeks back, I left negative feedback on every single item which I didn't receive.  Which means she/he got 9 negative feedback.  That was my last resort, and I was prepared to never get my items ever.

But that finally got a reaction from the seller, who contacted me almost immediately, and appealing for me to retract my feedback.  My response was unless I received my refund OR have the items re-shipped and I receive them, I would not retract.  And lo and behold, they all arrived this evening.  I am happy.  I will, of course, now have to contact the seller again, and try to retract the negative feedback.  Gosh.

I also ordered another bunch of nail polish at transdesign.com (recommended by the lovely Misschievous), and  am expecting another nail polish haul in the next 10 days.

    END OF STORY.

Now for the pictures.  Since I have already applied nail polish, I swatched them on my little sister's fingernails, no base, no topcoat, just 2 coats quickly applied.

    1. China Glaze For Audrey    ---  I will do an overview of all these peppermint, pastel teal colors soon.

    2. OPI You Blue My Mind   --- I will also compare all the metallic blues in my collection. (Chanel Blue Satin, MAC Naughty Nauticals)

    3. China Glaze Devotion  --- Purplish Silver Metallic colour

    4. Orly ---Charged Up

    5. China Glaze --- Grape Juice

    6. OPI --- Do you Lilac it *** again I will do an overview of all my Lavender nail polishes.  Right now this looks like MAC Rose Romance Love & Friendship nail lacquer.

Grape Juice is from CG's Summer Collection, Purple with Silver Glitter.  I also ordered a couple of colors from this collection in my transdesign haul coming on the way.

Do you Lilac it is slightly darker than Done out in Deco.  Will show some comparisions soon.

Charged up -- Purple blue shade.  I like the cream finish.  And this reminds me of Essie's Mesmerise.

    7. China Glaze --- Cashmere Creme

    8. OPI --- You Tickle my France-y  *** Watch out for my overview of nude nail polish colours.

    9. OPI - Malanga Wine ** This is my 3rd or 4th bottle.  Most classic red. ever.

Cashmere Creme - looks blah in the bottle, but is a nice shimmery nude shade.  Like a very pretty lipgloss color.

This is from the OPI France collection last year, I already have You Don't Know Jaques and Parlez Vouz OPI.

Some of the pictures are quite blur, and I do apologise.  I will post more nail stories and reviews over the weekend.

    Thanks for reading!!

    Little Spree

In kind of a good mood, so I went shopping, of course.

    Here's the damage:

    1. Pressie for my GF.   I bought a Sephora bath set.  Love the packaging.  It's also the first time I bought something at my local Sephora.

    2. Make Up Haul

    • MAC Wipes (the 45 Sheets pack) I want to try this out first, before buying the 100 sheets pack.
    • I want to try out more matte eyeshadows, hence:
    • Copperplate eyeshadow (Matte2)
    • Poison Pen eyeshadow (Matte 2)
    • Shu Uemura Eyebrow pencil (Seal Brown 09, hard formula)  Usually it is sharpen like a blade... but my gf can do a much better job than the Shu Uemura staff, so I just got it in the original 'shape'.
    • My SPLURGE OF THE DAY   CHANEL makeup base.  Called White Essentiel  Base De Teint  Whitening Modeling Effect Base in Spf 30/PA+++   ---PHEW  what a mouthful there!  I love the high SPF and also the scent is AMAZING!!!!!  And it feels so smooth, makes me feel pretty applying it.  I think it is new.

I will post more updates on the Chanel base and wipes later on and also do some looks with the new shadows....

    3.  Cute little handbag from LeSport Sac... It is in my FAVE color beige (besides my current lavender obsession of course)

...reminds me of the OPI Bare it in Trafaglar Square, no??  And it has a slight shimmer sheen.  And it is 30% off.  So.... had to get it.

    4. Shoes from marks and spencer.  Love the cut, how it shows off a hint of toe cleavage (I love showing toe cleavage)  and the height of the heel is just nice, cos I don't need to add any more height to myself.  and it is also very reasonable in terms of price.  Good everyday work shoes.

Me and sister goofing around.  And my fave tee of the moment, from Zara.  When I saw the color, I knew I HAD to get it.

That's all, and thanks for reading!

    The Lavender obsession continues...

    Hi!!!

And the obsession continues.  I am talking about the colour Lavender.  I really like the mixture of milky pale purple/violet, with the perfect tinge of grey/beige/pink whatever.  You know what I mean.  I was doing my nails the other day, and I saw this bottle of OPI sitting on the shelf, and Lavender Whip, Barry M's 129, Ever so Rich all came to my mind.  I knew I had to get it.  And it would be a very very pretty colour on my nails.   Yes, I am crazy!!!

This color is from the latest OPI spring/summer 09 collection, South Beach.

I left Lavender Whip at work (it was sorely missed this whole weekend), and I didn't get to taking a picture of the lipsticks and the nail polish side by side, but you get the idea.

    Sooty Smokey Eyes for Day?!

Yes. you can, if you keep the rest of the face simple.  I just smudged eyeliner all over on the top and bottom lids.

I used Smolder eyekohl by MAC, and also throw on my falsies.  I also used some Carbon Plumage e/s by MAC to help to smudge.

    Lips:

Barry M 129 and Ever So Rich gloss by MAC

I think I was kind of inspired by the following face charts I saw at temptalia.com

    Little Haul and Lavender Updates

The MAC 109 brush which I intend to use for contouring, liquid foundation and blusher.

MAC Creme Team Collection, I got Ever So Rich and Lavender Whip.

I compared my Barry M 129 lippy with Lavendar Whip.

On my lips, the one left is Lavender Whip and Barry M is on the right.  Lavender Whip looks less in your face pale, more wearable, while the color payoff for the Barry M is much creamier, and thicker, and certainly paler.  But the colors are stunningly similar. I would wear Lavender Whip more often, because the Barry M 129 is kind of too wonky for everyday, especially daytime wearing.
