About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

No ads, no paid links etc please.  I am in charge of all content and pictures here.

    Current Faves & Misses

    hi hi,

Shall do an entry on some stuff which I have loving, and using up lately.  Consider this a collective mini review of random things I am enjoying, and hope it will be helpful to some of you!

    Chanel Hair Mist

This is pricey, but I love it for how the scent lasts in my hair.  It stays in your hair, but not as intense as spraying the perfume itself in your hair.  Which sometimes I am guilty of doing.  So I always have this hair mist in my bag, and it works great for scent touch ups on the go, to get rid of un-glam food centre smell or sometimes when you are under the sun for too long, you have this sun-burnt smell.  So I sprayed this a couple of times into my hair, for instant freshen me up!

Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Boy

I love everything about this lipstick.  The scent, the color, and the FEEL of it.  It's like a lip balm.  Everyone. Must. Try.

Clarins Instant Light Brush on Perfector

I have used it up, I couldn't believe it, until I tried to twiste the top as usual to dispense the product, and realise, I couldn't turn it anymore, and nothing comes out.  It is perfect for brightening your undereye area, and I like how the brush is slightly fuller than other similar products I am also using.  The color and tone is also perfect for my skintone.  [not too pink, and not too yellow]

Clarins WP Whitening Repairing Night Cream

I have used it up, and enjoying every night I use this cream.  It is rich without being heavy, and makes my skin all even out and smooth.  I feel like this cream works to repair skin damage at night, and the scent of it is just so soothing.

    Sun Protection!!!

Clarins Day Screen High Protection SPF40

    Shiseido Multi=Defense UV Protector SPF50

The hot scorching days are here again, and I am so glad to be armed with these effective, yet not thick sunscreen which I wear daily under my makeup. For daily use, I prefer the Clarins one, and I save the Shiseido one for days when I know I will be really outdoors [like my Sports Day a couple of weeks back].

Blending Foundation with my Beauty Blender. I got this a long time back, and have only used it on or off.  It feels good to 'bounce' the sponge on your face, not brush hair streaking, and no buffing action needed.  Quick and easy!

Chanel Natural Finish Loose Powder. Sets foundation flawlessly, and for long lasting effect too.

    Concealer and brush power combination!

I hate the Inuovi eyeliner brush as a eyeliner brush because of its frayed natural hairs, but as a concealer brush it is PERFECT.  It is small, precise, and the natural hairs are much much easier to wash [as compared to synthetic hairs].

And my current fave concealer for spots is the MUFE concealer palette.  I got distracted and stopped using it after I got my Amazing Cosmetics Concealer, but now I am back to the cream type concealer for spots.  I highly recommend this type of concealer for spot concealing.

Giorgio Armani Sheer Blush in #5

This looks like nothing in the pan, it's like a muted rose pink color, but it gives me a nice natural rosy glow, like my cheeks but better color.  Yup.  My cheeks but better, cos I do have slightly rosy cheeks.  And this blusher enhances my own natural blush.

    MISSES!!

    MAC Prep+Prime  Vibrancy Eye Primer

This creases, I am not sure what it is used for, but it creases on my lids like eeeeeks!  I do like the finish of this product, but what purpose does it serve?  For $58 this product better yield more tangible results!

What are your current hits and misses?

That's all, and thanks for reading!

LOTD: Coppery Red Arabian Eyes (for Sarah's party)

A look I did for Sarah's Arabian themed-party!  It was fun meeting up all the other onsugar bloggers and friends!  I did not dress up for the event, except for doing a rather dramatic eye look (by my standards).  I decided to go for a coppery reddish color combination with berry toned lips.  These few pictures were taken after I came home and the paler lip color is YSL's Tea Rose.

I really enjoyed doing this look!

    Products used:

Foundation - Lancome Pro Base, Guerlain Lingerie De Peau, La Mer Powder

Concealer - Amazing Cosmetics Concealer, Clarins Perfecting Pen 01

Lips - Clarins Rouge Prodige No130 lipstick  *click here to check out other LOTD with this lipstick

Cheeks - Illamasqua Rumor, NARS Luster

Eyes - NARS primer, MUFE Aqua Cream #14, inuovi Rose Gold, MAC Beauty Marked, MAC Carbon, MAC Solar White

Liners - MAC Feline, MAC Blackline, Loreal Superliner

The look in terms of technique is based loosely on this tutorial by MissChievious.  My bushy brows are not defined enough for this very dramatic look...but, oh well!

This is the actual look I sported during the most part of the party.

And the small crowd who were all decked out seriously to the theme!  Never seen so many girls with rich vibrant makeup at one go!

    The onsugarettes at the party.

And a whole bunch of pictures of everyone else!

That's all, and thanks for looking!

    Eyeshadows: Dupes and Comparisons!

Another type of blog entries which I really like to do are the dupes and swatches/ comparisons (my other fave entries are hauls entries and nail stories).  And so we have here two different colors, one is that coopery red eyeshadow colors, which I know lissaouix is kind of lemming after, she was asking if MUA's Lava e/s look reddish, and I also thought of inuovi's Rose Gold eyeshadow, which she also was quite interested in.

I am not very good at describing colors, but I am sure you can see that Lava is browner and darker than Rose Gold.

    Both are super pigmented!

The swatch shows that both colors are quite different altogether.

    Which do you prefer?

Another color which I wanted to show/ dupe and comparison is whether MAC's Style Snovb, MAC's Satin Taupe and MUA's Lava eyeshadows are the same.  Think Chantana also clarified that Satin Taupe is more purple or something like that... so, I decided to compare all three.

I think in the following pictures --------it is very obvious that they are almost indentical.

That's al, and thanks for reading!

    One Item Haul: inuovi eyeshadow

    Hi!

I bought one item from the inuovi friends & family haul yesterday.  Went there with Kas, Amy and Chantana.  I can say that we didn't go too crazy with the sale, mainly because all the $1 promotion that myredhouse had just ran the day before.  Well, I don't think I went that crazy with the mua $1 sale, from what I have seen around here, I only got 5 or 6 generic items (provided they are all in stock).

If there is something I can never get enough of at inuovi, it would be their metallogy series of eyeshadows.  And since they have this buy 3 at 50% off deal, I got one eyeshadow, while Kas bought the other 2, so we could enjoy the good deal. The metallogy eyeshadows are super pigmented, creamy and have metallic finishes.  Their names are all names of metals, obviously.  I already own Platinum, Rose Gold & Gold.

I got the metallogy eyeshadow in Tin.

It is a pretty grey color with a gold tinge. When I got home, I immediately thought of other similar shades which I already have, and so I decided to do a quick dupe/ comparison entry.

I think the color looks like Smokey Quartz from myredhouse or is it MUA cosmetics?, MAC's Smoke & Diamonds.  I guess that greyish, silvery, brown color?

But they look quite different when swatched.

I think smokey quartz has tiny silver glitters, tin has that very obvious gold tinge, and smoke & diamonds seems the darkest.  But they all have the same base color, I think.

I think such colors are very good for all over the lids by themselves, and also for smokey eyes.

That's all, and thanks for reading.

I am in the process of uploading a video, just a random one where I got my brother to be the camera-man while I briefly showed how I store my makeup.  It has been two hours, and I have been doing 2180983902 things in the meantime, gosh, the whole uploading videos is such a pain!!  I think I should just stick to only blogging.  Heh.

    LOTD & Sarah's birthday outing/shopping!

    HI!

So today, I went out with the girls.... :)  Mainly it was Sarah's birthday 2 days before, and she had this birthday promotion for purchasing inuovi cosmetics at 40% off.. and she wanted to share the good deal with us..which was very lovely and generous of her.  Just realised I didn't have any pictures taken with my camera of Roseanne, Honey (?), and Miss AB.  :p  But you will see them in the other onsugar blogs.

And I also want to thank Amy BIG TIME for giving me the ELF Natural Nymph mineral lipstick!!!  Totally unexpected, and so thoughtful of her!!

We surprised Sarah with a little cake, and after munching on the cake and all... we trooped to MAC, then to Inuovi, and then we went to Page One, and then we had dinner at Carls' Junior.

L to R: Me! , Kas, Sarah, Amy, Chatana

    Me and Diana!!

At inuovi, I didn't get anything, except for the brush cleaner, which costs $10.20 after discount.   I have several hauls coming my way in the next couple of weeks, and I didn't want to go overboard (as usual) with the whole buying thing.

Here is what I wore to the outing, makeup wise.

    Face:  The foundation routine

Eyes: (all mac unless otherwise stated)

Otherworldly p/p as base, Gulf Stream, Climate Blue (which I prolly mixed with a little Cobalt Blue pro), Solar White -- all LE e/s from the Cool Heat collection  way back in Jul 08, and the white inner corner is UD's Polyester Bride.  Eyeliner, I used Loreal's Superliner, and MAC's Wavy Blue pencil (pro) on the lower lids.  I also used Powersurge pencil to tightlight.  Not that you can really see in the pictures.

    Cheeks:  MAC Blonde MSF

    Lips: GOSH Darling

All in all, it was a fun day!  I wish I didn't feel so spaced out and breathless the whole day, I wonder why.  Everywhere we went, the air seemed super stuffy, and humid.

LOTD: Neutral Eyes, Funky Sneakers, and Q about ipod nano!

    Hi,

So this morning, when I woke up, I decided to remove that glittery gold nail polish, and I took a few pictures of the step by step, how 'dirty' my nails look, and the transformation after I applied some cream, and a change of nail polish color.... and then when I decide to re-size and upload  the pictures, all ready to explain the steps and other ramble, guess what, all the nail related pictures I took, were GONE.  Seriously!  I don't know what happened!  So yea, the glittery gold nail polish is now gone, and I ain't going to take new pictures of the nail color I am wearing now (FYI, if you are curious, it is Barry M 'Wild Orchid or Wild Purple') either way it is a metallic royal purple color.

So, today we hanged out a little at the cousin's house, and since she had an entire mirror wall, and since I had actually had on full face makeup (I had initially thought of just wearing glasses & foundation that's all), so well, here we have a LOTD entry.

On the face: My foundation routine, click here to read more.  But today, I used MAC 109 to buff in the liquid foundation (still prefer the synthetic foundation brush though).

On the cheeks: NARS Laguna, and MAC Pleasantry Blusher

On the lips: This pretty nude lipstick which I featured a couple of days back.  But they are worn off in the following pictures.

On the eyes: I only used 2 eyeshadows, they are inuovi's Dynamite and Spotlight eyeshadows. No liner on upper lids, just some on the lower waterline and then coats of mascara. Falsies from Palz.

This Estee Lauder foundation is not going to make your face MATTE all the time.  If you have oily skin like me, you need to blot your face time to time, then you will get back the matte clean look again, without having to powder your face.  Which is good~

Rest of the outfit is very plain, white cotton men's tee from Cotton On (2 for $30), and a Bershka white tank underneath.  Necklaces, you have seen them before.

And then I tried out my cousin's husband's high cut sneakers for fun.  I actually kind of like the look of these sneakers (from Zara).  Oh well.

And a random pic of me being very prim and tea drinking.  LOL.

Ok, now is the question about the ipod nano.  I am thinking of getting the 16GB ipod nano (S$288)... firstly, cos if you order it online you get this free personalised engraving, so you can put whatever message you want at the back of the player.  Just like this... for example:

Also, it comes in such a wide array of colors, which one should I go for???

But seriously, I don't need another ipod.... cos I still have my ancient ipod classic 30GB, ancient iphone - both of which still functions perfectly as music players... and besides if I need to listen to music on the go, I normally just use the media player in my BB.  Besides, I should keep the $$ for my dream camera (the canon G-11), right?  What is a huge pull factor for this nano is the built-in video recorder, and I think I would be able to get some great footages with it... (not for makeup tutorials etc, but more like paparazzi style of random stuff I do etc).  Hmmmmmm.... technology, decisions, $$$, argh! Tough choices!!

Anyway, if you are curious, and you want to check out the features of this ipod nano, check out the online store, here.

And for those of you who have this ipod nano with video recording, how do you like it, is it  Yay, or Nay??

    Thanks for reading!

Tried & Tested: Dark Lids for a Night Out

    Hi hi!

Just want to do a little follow up to the Dark Lids look that I posted a couple of days back, click here to read more if you are interested.

I used all different products (different black products, different lashes and blusher) for the same look, and to very nice effect too -- I think.

I wanted to test the 'wearability' of this look, and learned a few pointers in the process:

    • Do the eyes first, because there is going to be fallout, and you don't want to spend time cleaning up the undereye area and smear your foundation.
    • Keep the rest of the face clean and as flawless as possible.  Hence I spent time painstakingly concealing all the little spots on my face.
    • Keep the brows groomed but light, so that the focus is on the dark lids and clean face.

Nonetheless, I was determined to rock this look and here are the results.  And hey, I added a faux mole above my mouth, cos that's what Nic (pixiwoo) did in the tutorial.

    Products used:

Eyes: MAC painterly paintpot(base), MAC Your Ladyship pigment & Inuovi Platinum e/s (highlight)

The Black Part:  Stila Golden Noir smudgepot, Ed Pinau (that freebie eyeshadow) on top.  Perfect match for each other because of the whole black and gold glitter going on.

Lashes: Sasa lashes (forgot the brand), and YSL Faux Cils mascara

Face: Dior Extreme Fit, MAC Studio Sculpt Concealer

Cheeks: NARS Laguna, and MAC Azalea (which is AMAZING for this look!!)

Lips: YSL RV Lingerie Pink (7)

And I did say tried and tested, so here are a few pictures of the night:

FYI Sister is using Style Demon on her cheeks  :)

Sidenote:  I think the whole dark lids/ pink lips combination is the Louis Vuitton runaway looks for the past couple of seasons.

That's all (so much for a little follow up), and thanks for reading!!
