About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. Makeup Storage, Organisation, Set-Up [Feb 2012]

    Hi hi,

This is an updated makeup organisation & set-up entry.  The last time I did one was back in Jan 2011 when I had a major room re-vamp - link here, if you are interested.  I won't be showing you exactly what's in my stash, but just trying to share how I store everything, and how I TRY to keep things organised, because everything can get kind of overwhelming, and also share how my blogging set up looks like, in case you are also keen to see what goes behind the scene here.

Most of what you see here are stuff from IKEA & Muji.  I shall try to insert relevant links to past entries where I might have talked about a particular item of storage.

I share my room with my sis, we sleep in the same room, but the bulk of her clothes and stuff are still in her old bedroom.  I am also not showing my hair products and tools storage because that's in another corner of the room next to my PAX wardrobe, and it isn't very exciting anyway.

To prevent any rambling, I have divided this area of my room into sections A - E. Here you see the overall of where everything is, if you stand near the door to my bedroom.  I try to keep things to something white...because my room is TINY.... and white looks neater and cleaner.  I also try not to keep things out in the open, because you can see there is a large window by the desk, and stuff gets DUSTY all the time.  So keeping my stash in drawers is important to me.

You can see my labels for each section what its for... and I will show you close ups.

    Sections A and B

A: a tall bookcase [Ikea, Billy?] is quite old, and 4 of the 6 adjustable shelves contain beauty related items.

B: my new ALEX with 9 drawers [S$239] which replaces my two HELMERS.  Holds most of my makeup collection.

    Close up of Section A

Perfume Collection, Various units for false lashes, contact lenses, nail supplies, accessories (necklaces, rings etc)

    Close up of Section B

Right on top of my ALEX is a cupcake/ food serving tray.  Got this at IKEA for S$19.  This is great for storing and displaying any pretty items you want.  I try to keep the top part of this ALEX clean and free of anything else except for this serving tray.  I sometimes stand here with a mirror to do my makeup in the morning.

close up of the 9 drawers

p/s many YT gurus also have the same ALEX drawers (nikkietutorials, misschievious, etc)

My sister helped to drive home this unit and my bro & dad assembled the thing...

all I had to do was to give my sister a call to buy this for me when she was at IKEA last week.

I like how 'sturdy' the drawers feel when you full them in and out.   Some of the drawers are still messy, in terms of what I want to fit in, and what goes where... but this one ALEX saves more floor space than two HELMERS - which were already bursting with too much items.

    The first four drawers

    Next 5 drawers

Next to my ALEX, on the floor is a temporary stash of new products which I bought or were given but yet to take photos of, I leave them in the bags and boxes so they don't get lost in my stash or get used before I take good photos of them.  Ideally once I have no 'outstanding' stuff to feature this area should be empty, and everything put away nicely.

    AREA C

AREA D:  WORK AREA & BLOGGING SET UP

This is my main workstation, my younger shares the other end of this long desk, another ALEX piece, hence the matching drawers.  The ALEX drawers here contain more new products, and two drawers contain personal non beauty items.  You can see the MUJI drawers here, which I don't like..... because I feel like they should belong somewhere else and not taking up space on my table.

MUJI CLEAR Acrylic & Plastic drawers - link here

MUJI Storage & Mirror - link here

I also have a IKEA table lamp which Jerlaine gave me, I used white daylight bulbs to take pictures if I have to, at night... but other than that, I take blog pictures almost only in the day time, as you can see I have the big window in front of me, and I prefer to take blog pictures under natural lighting.

The makeup brushes you see there in the cup are meant to go for washing soon.  My laptop usually sits there, or on my bed.  I have a DYSON blade-less fan which I put on my desk.   Some shades, and contact lenses which are my daily essentials.   When it gets too bright, I usually leave the blinds down.   The two existing HELMERS have now been separated, one at each side of the desk.  My sister uses one for her art supplies, and I use my remaining one for nail polish storage.

Close up of the MUJI drawers area - I am trying to find an ideal place to fit them, cos I think they clutter up my desk.

    Inside of the MUJI drawers

I leave a clean dry towel on top of my clear acrylic drawer to prevent dust and it also serves as a drying area when I wash my makeup brushes

This is the top view of my desk area.

I use my MacBookPro and Adobe Photoshop CS-5 to edit & re-size blog pictures.

When taking blog pictures, I either lay out my stuff on the floor, or table whichever is more spacious for what I am about to do.

I buy two pieces of large art paper, in an ivory and black color.  They form the background of my blog pictures.  Personally I don't like distracting prints and images for my blog pictures, so I always use a plain neutral background.  I can use my desk, but sometimes when it gets messy, I just put the paper on top of the mess, and hello, clean background instantly.  Heheheh.  Lazy tip and trick there for you.  :)

The papers are quite big, so I fold them in half for my purposes.  This is how a 'photo-shoot' might look like...

    on a black background

and the usual ivory background you see in so many entries

    AREA E

Close up of the nail polish storage, I like that I can pull out the whole HELMER unit

Four of the six drawers contain nail polish.   The other two are nail wheels and misc stuff, and my own personal stuff.

I think it is good to invest in permanment fixtures like these actual shelves and drawers, and if I were to have my own place, I would prolly ask the interior designer to do a built in something something to my own preferences... but for now... I think this works.

I also cleared out quite a bit of stuff which are old and outdated when I moved my Helmers to the ALEX... so these are stuff which I can still use. Again, I have mentioned before... makeup & beauty is my (passionate) hobby it is almost like a full time occupation here, so I do spend time & money trying to make everything all proper and good.

Hmmmm, I think I am done here... do let me know if you spot something interesting which I didn't explain or talk about, leave any questions in the comments below!

Also, just want to say thanks to everyone (so many of you!) who pointed out the Yahoo 'feature' thing, seriously, don't know where that came from...and I was totally unaware, and caught very very very much by surprise.

Let's end this entry with a very girly frilly picture of my cupcake tray display which I have posted on instagram last week!

Have a great weekend, and thanks for looking!

    New Setup + Makeup Storage

    Hi hi,

You might have read from my tweets and previous entries that I have been re-vamping my room for the past 3 weeks or so.  It took us quite a while, because there was so much junk to clear out, but basically, what we did:

    1. removed old built-in wardrobe

    2. installed new bed with storage in the space where built in wardrobe used to be

    3. installed new table/ workspace in front of windows where my bed used to be (YAY!)

    4. fresh coat of white paint

    5. Throw away/ donated/ gave away like 10 boxes of old stuff?!

I also have my other sister sharing the room with me now! But her stuff are still in her previous room, because I don't have enough wardrobe space to hold her clothes.    Anyway, the room is so much spacious now, and more conducive for serious work, photo-taking and well, to be creative? -- because we are facing the window, and these days we do get cool breeze in the evening/ late night.  If you follow my sister's onsugar blog, she blogged about how HER side of the long table looks like.  It is very very different from my half of the table.

Click HERE to read her entry and for more room pictures.

I thought I would do this entry right now, before my room/ space becomes messy, because right now, the drawers and everything are still empty, I have yet to move my things inside... and when that happens, I probably won't feel like taking pics and all that anymore.

I intend to keep my half of the table top relatively empty, except for my notebook, and keep things away in the drawers.  Maybe that's my new year resolution!  To have a clutter free table!  I also need to get new lighting for the table... because that little lamp has very dim orangey light.

The table is 2 metres long, and enough for 2 persons to sit side by side.

Let's take a look at what's in the muji drawers -- which you all know contains my nail polish stash.  I haven't been hauling BIG time for nail polish, so everything still fit inside, though the space is getting tight for all 4 drawers.

Won't be showing everything in detail, as I just want to share a storage ideas and solution kind of entry.

The muji drawers come in stacks of 3, but I added an extra layer for more room.  Can't remember how much they cost.  $20+ I think.

Next, are the helmer drawers which I have tweeted several times, and many of you have been asking me questions about.

you kind of get an idea of where things are located in my room.  There is a tall skinny book shelf next to the helmer (which is not pictured), where I used to hold my makeup.

I think I am converting it to a real bookshelf instead.  My bed is right next to it.

The top two drawers of each helmer holds both my sister's and my personal random stuff, so I shall open the rest of the drawers and show you what's inside.

    the muji drawers on top:

    the blush drawers

    the next 2 drawers

and in the next helmer, the top 3 drawers which are REALLY packed to the brim!

closer look at the eyeshadow palettes drawer,

it holds my mac palettes, sleek palettes, and the CS palettes, UD and Two-faced palettes

    and the last 2 drawers

and lastly, there is also a chest of 3 drawers in another part of the room which I emptied out, now those drawers hold my LUSH products, hair styling tools, Clarisonic, and also this drawer which is packed with brand new skin and body products:

I try not to rotate too many skincare products because

#1, I don't want to risk them turning bad after I opened and not use as often,

#2 sometimes for review purposes, I need to be using a certain brand or range at one time.

And lastly, this container holds some products which I am trying to use up currently, mainly sample tubes of products,

so this container has different compartments to hold the products together.

When I am done with the little tubes, I will move on to either the Embroylisse or Clarins whitening range.

I hope this has been helpful to you, if you are thinking of changing up your room/ space.   I try to keep the colors monochromatic to give the illusion of a more seamless space, and also use more drawers to keep the clutter and dust at bay.   But i am really not the neatest person in the world.  My workspace at work... is hmmmmm... shall we say, notorious?

So things I still need (but not terribly urgent):

    1. mirror

    2. lights

    3. dividers type to organise drawers

That's all, and thanks for reading!

p/s another giveaway entry up tomorrow or first entry of 2011!

Storage for too much nail polish and surprising discovery!

    Hi everyone!

Kind of a random post here. Because of my recent nail polishing hauling, my 4 plastic drawers can't fit in any more new products.  And I had already thrown out one entire drawer full of polish that have dried up (usually those filled with glitter chunks), gave away polish that I don't use anymore etc. But the situation is BAD.. and I went to IKEA and bought this drawer thingy, which I am sure many of you would recognise it, cos it's so IKEA... you know?  Got the bf to lug it home, and got my bro to assemble it for me - guys come in real handy for situations like this.

And then I spent maybe 2 or 3 hours organising my stuff, throwing out my old bed side table, organising, etc etc... and this is what I have by my bed now. I am too lazy to rotate the picture, but you get the idea.  A ittle lamp on top, fancy furry mirror which my sister bought in Japan earlier this year.  This is a HUGE improvement from my old bed side table which is filled with all sorts of stuff. Not pretty at all. So I am happy with my purchase.  I have only used up 4 drawers (2 for all my nail polish!!!) so far.  And the old plastic drawers thing which is on the shelf, I am using them to store my contact lenses and hair scrunchies stuff.

In one of the drawers dedicated to my nail polish, I have all the misc brands (Sally Hensen, the odd bottles of Essie, The Face Shop, Barry M), top coats, nail files, chanel boxed nail polishes etc.

And in this drawer are all my China Glaze, OPI and MAC nail polish.  I prolly still have space for another 20 bottles at least inside.  Cos the 2 boxes you see are empty, and I just left them there so I don't have to put the bottles all the way inside.

So that's all I want to say about my new storage solution. This isn't a collection thing... and I do need to post my latest nail polish haul, and continue my little series on the overview of colours etc etc.

And then I bought pressies for my BFFs at work!  One of them is moving to another school, and I got her something from COACH, to match her bag. Cute paper bag.  And another friend at work is having her bday next Sat, so I got her a Two Faced bronzed trio palette thingy, SUPER CUTE.  I think I am pretty generous when it comes to buying pressies for people I love!  :)  makes me happy.

Because the Sephora bag they gave me is kind of cheap and ugly looking, I went digging around in my cupboard and found this sleeker looking Sephora bag which I think either my BF or the sis's BF got during one of the US haul... and I put her pressie inside instead.  And holly molly, look what I found inside the bag.  A BRAND NEW UDPP!!!  Now this bag has been lying around in my cupboard since last year.  I knew it contained some empty MAC boxes, but I didn't know the Urban Decay box has the product still in it.  But since I am using my TFSI (which is lasting me almost ONE year already).... I don't need to use it yet.  And I also have back ups of TFSI.. so.. I am happy!  :)

Will post my latest haul from transdesign next.  Thanks for reading!
