About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. New nails

What happened to my previous post??!!!!!  Was typing and rambling and suddenly it was posted without any words at all!  Bleah.  Now I have to re-type everything.

Ok, I got my natural nails again after sporting gel nails for the past 3 -4 months.  There are good reasons why I decide to go back to natural nails.

    • It was getting kind of frivolous and $$$ trying to maintain the gel nails every 3 - 4 weeks.  Yes, I love the hard, shiny and smooth nails (which makes apply nail colors a breeze and they last longer w/o any chipping) -- but I was beginning to think, "If I skip 2 refills sessions, that would be the equivalent of a huge MAC haul, or if I skip 2 sessions, I can buy some SK-II which I have been wanting to try out on my 30 year old skin, or if I skip 1 session I could d a hair color job.... you get the drift....)
    • I have been buying lots of nail polish lately, some neutrals, some classics, some wacky colors.  And I really love to try them out on short nails.  I think you can get away with all sorts of colors if you have short square nails.  So I will be posting more nail-related stories soon!
    • I think I can DIY the whole gel nails thing.  I found out a shop which carries the IBD gel nail thingy/kit and I just need to get the UV lamp etc.. which all adds up to the cost of ..... 1 new set of gel nails if I were to do it at a nail salon. I have not ventured into this YET.  Cos I think I should let my nails breathe, and be normal again before getting into all these stuff, and besides I don't think  I have the time to really play around with this at home for now.

I also bought a few nail care products, which I prolly will blog about mid-week or this weekend.

So how does it feel like with my own short natural nails again?

    1. My finger tips feel really LIGHT and like stumpy.
    2. I can type much quieter now.
    3. Texting on my iphone is ultra sensitive now.
    4. I can eat using my hands without worrying about dirt getting into my nails.  I used to have to wear gloves when dining outside, like when I am eating crabs.  LOL.   The lengths I go to in the name of beauty!! And food of course!

On my nails now, I am sporting OPI Tickets to Paradise.  This is a pic of me sans make up & with big black specs, so I have to cover some of my pale face with a random stuffed bear thing.

    Beige & Black nails

    HI!

I used OPI colours for this fun look.  Hmmmmm I am supposed to be clearing some work.... but obviously SO NOT getting started.

Kind of Chanel-inspired you might say.

Black Oynx and Bare it in Trafaglar Square.

I am also looking at nail supplies online.  Maybe I can do my own gel nails and infills so I don't need to go to a salon to have them touched up regularly.  I am pretty good/skilful with nail stuff in general, so I am quite confident I can pick up the skills quite quickly.  The kit even comes with a DVD manual and it is exactly the same as those used in the shops.

I am on a nail polish spree lately.  Bought 2 more OPI a couple of days ago, and I hauled big time on ebay for China Glaze colors.  Yipeeeeee.

    Romantic Purple Nails

Something I did to maximise the long nails which I have now... but it is kind of thick at the tips, so if you try this out make sure you have plenty of time for drying all the layers.

For the step by step how to, please check out this tutorial by julieg713, which is where I got the idea from.

    Products I used:

1st layer: OPI Colour of  the Zen-tury (silvery violet)

2nd layer: MAC Demi Blanc (a frosty duochrome pink color)

    3rd layer (Tip 1): OPI Parlez-vous opi?

4th layer (Tip 2): OPI Lincoln Park After Dark

5th layer (Tip 3, the outer most one): OPI My Private Jet

Top coat: Sally Hensen Mega Shine topcoat

    And the end results:

That's all, I hope you like this, and try it out too!!

    Santa Nails

I did nail extensions over the weekend.  I sometimes like the look of long sleek nails, but my own nails aren't tough enough when they are grown beyond a certain length.  The last time I had gel/fake nails done was more than a year back.  I probably will keep this set of nails for about 2 months before removing them. The manicurist also drew a Santa face on one of my nail using the acrylic powder, making a very 3D and detailed picture.

I got a french manicure with the white plastic tips.  This way I can still paint regular nail polish over whenever I wish, and remove the nail polish whenever too.

Since we are on Santa.... check this out:
