About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Review & Application: Lancome Renergie Eclat Multi-Lift CC Cream

    Hi hi!

This is my review of the new Lancome Renergie Eclat Multi-Lift CC Cream, which I have previously featured in this entry here.   I know there will be inevitable comparisons to the other CC creams out in the market, and several of you are also waiting for me to give a comparison of them, that will be coming, but give me a couple of weeks!  Need a bit of time to test out one last CC cream before I can give a complete overview.

So anyway, this Lancome CC Cream is already available, and retails for $100 each.  It contains 40ml of product (made in Japan), which is 10ml more than the usual capacity of similar products.  The Lancome Renergie range is targetted towards lifting and firming one's complexion.  It is not the first BB cream type product that Lancome is releasing, and I did enjoy the UV Expert Shield BB Complete SPF50 which they launched last year.

    Let's start with the packaging:

It comes in a purple tube (purple being the Renergie color), and the product comes out via a pump dispenser.  I am using the shade 01 (there is also a shade 02), and I think there is a total of 4 shades in the US market, but here in Singapore, we get 1 and 2.

    Swatches:

It doesn't have any particular scent,  and the CC cream looks slightly greyish (which is typical of bb creams) as opposed to beigey skintone shade.  The consistency is very smooth, and very emolient.  It spreads easily and blends into my skintone.

    Application

(get ready for some up close macro shots, pores alert! Hahaha)

I enjoy using the CC cream with both my fingers and a buffing brush.  The results are the same.
The consistency is a little on the thin side (and thin compared to your typical creamy thickish BB/ CC Creams) and allows me time to work it into my skin.

Here you can see, the CC cream is applied over bare moisturised skin.

After blending out, you can clearly see there is a radiance to my skintone. The coverage is very light, but it does visibly brightens up my skin.  I tried wearing this out on its own, set with some powder, and found that it didn't last me more than say, 5 hours.  After that, I think I start to look 'faded' and tired.

The next day, I tried it as a correcting makeup base, and topped it off with a very thin layer of foundation.  That yielded much better results.  I looked fresh the whole day, and the fresh luminosity stayed throughout.  So even though it didn't have impressive lasting powder on its own, it does work very well as a makeup base that protects your skin and adds that natural radiance.

I was using this for a whole week, and I do think that it does have great skincare properties - it has a light texture, and my skintone did look a little more even-ed out by the end of the week.

here's a quick demo - I layered a thin layer of foundation on top - of course, if you have very clear skin, and foundation usually lasts on your face, you can totally skip this step.  I am just sharing with you what works for me and my skin type.  I usually use my Teint Miracle liquid foundation, or the cream version - either one of them complements the CC cream flawlessly.  I love the end results - very brightening, and very natural.

    Bottomline -

The Lancome Renergie Eclat Multi-Lift CC Cream is a good performer, I think it serves to complement the Renergie range, with the same skincare benefits (I have used both the eye & face creams before, great stuff!).  As a BB/CC cream, it really did brighten up my skintone, and bring some radiance to the skin.  I don't think it is super corrective though, you might be able to tell that my skin still looks a tad reddish, and that didn't get balanced out til I used the foundation (which is beigy-er).

If you want a light texture skin protecting CC Cream, go for the Lancome Renergie Eclat Multi-Lift CC Cream, but if you need more coverage, and want something that lasts, you might not enjoy this product as much.  I do like it for its skincare benefits, and also as a great makeup base for everyday, and also to keep my skin firm and lifted (and at my age, I NEED!!!).

Stay tuned for my comparison, and meanwhile I have two more BB creams reviews which will be coming your way soon!

Hope this has been helpful, and thanks for reading!

Review & Application: Chanel CC Cream

    Hi hi!

This is my review of the Chanel CC Cream (S$82, at all Chanel counters).  I have been using it everyday this whole week, and what better time to test out a new base product, when we are experiencing some of the hottest days to date!  It's crazy how much I perspire everyday.  :(

So anyway, when I was at Tangs making my purchase, I didn't see the CC cream on display immediately, there was no images, though I later noticed the display at the skincare section of the large counter/ store (instead of at the foundation & cases display).  So, I suppose the CC cream is really marketed as a skincare product, rather than a makeup (ie foundation) product.  Just a heads up, in case you are wondering where the CC Cream is displayed.

The product only comes in one shade - 20 Beige - which is my usual shade for most Chanel foundations anyway.  There is 30ml of product, and it is made in France.   It also has the same scent as other base products, but the scent of the CC Cream seems to linger on longer than my other Chanel base products.

In my review of this product, do note that I also tried out various methods of application, primer/ no primer, you know, the usual various ways to test out how the product functions in different conditions.

Packaging: Sleek white, in a tube.  I was surprised that it didn't come with a pump dispenser like the other brands (notably Dior and Lancome - and those reviews are def on their way).  Still, it is very travel friendly and easy to use.

    More pictures

Before we proceed - here is some information I got from the box.

    Product information:

With its double Chanel signature, CC Cream combines the benefits of a complete skincare product created by Chanel Research and the results of a natural complexion finish created by the Makeup Studio.
Backed by true expertise regarding the precise needs of Asian women in terms of flawless skin, Chanel Research developed a specific cream, a fusion of skincare and makeup.

In addition to being an ideal cream for day long confidence, CC Cream gives your skin what it alone can offer - a fresh and flawless complexion.

    5 Actions, 1 Single Step

The incredibly comfortable CC Cream contains ingredients of natural origin. This skincare formula is adapted to sensitive skin.  It delivers complete correction and long-wear makeup with a lightweight, non-oily texture.

    • Soothes - cornflower water comforts sensitive skin
    • Moisturises - hyaluronic acid helps maintain hydration levels all day long by trapping and retaining moisture inside the skin
    • Protects - SPF 30 and PA+++ sun filters block aging-accelerating UVA-UVB rays.  The cream is formulated with a mineral filter for higher tolerance on the skin.
    • Prevents - the Rejuvencia active ingredient of natural origin, derived from a marine micro-organism, is the best prevention shield against external aggressions.
    • Evens out imperfections - redness, dark spots and pores are visibly diminished.  The complexion is lastingly fresh and natural.

    And swatches:

The Beige 20 shade is perfect for my skintone, I personally find it to be of neutral undertones, and it is able to even out the redness in my skintone.  It also dries and sets pretty quickly to a almost matte finish - something which I quickly noticed at first swatch in store.

Before I give my overall thoughts on the CC Cream - I will show you how I apply it.

    Application:

    1.  I had tried using the GA UV Master Primer as a base for the CC Cream - but it is not always necessary.  I found that the CC Cream applies and holds up well on its own.

    2. I also tried applying it with my fingers once - but I didn't really like the experience - I thought I had needed to use more product, and it sets a little too quickly for me to work it into my skin using fingers.  I really prefer to buff and blend each area of my face at a time. And it gives a better (more natural) result anyway.

    Texture & Finish:

    1. The CC Cream is extremely buttery smooth, and also a little powdery.  I would compare it to Ettusais bb cream (the original and mineral white versions).  I feel like I don't really need to set it, if I am in a hurry.  But I always set with a powder because it's just my habit, and I want to 'seal' the base anyway.

    2. The finish is almost matte, but not dull at all.  It is very natural, and yet gives decent coverage.  I just need to do some pin point concealing, but really, this has the coverage of a decent light to medium liquid foundation.  I am very impressed by the coverage.

    3. The CC Cream is able to correct my overall skintone, and even out any uneven-ness.

    Lasting Power:

    1. It really lasted well on me (I don't stay in a air-conditioned office from 9-5pm, usually it's just extremely hot humid indoor weather conditions), and I find that I still look quite fresh after a good 8 hours.

    2. I don't oil up as much with the use of this CC Cream, perhaps this is due to the hydrating formula.

    3.  Due to the decent coverage, and the fact that I don't need a primer with it, my base application time has reduced significantly.  I slap this on, fill my brows and dust color on my cheeks and I am good to go for the day.

Overall, I am really happy with my purchase - and at $82, it is the same price as other Chanel foundations.   I do wish the scent isn't so strong though (okay, it wore off after say, by the time I leave my house), but it is really a great product to use for the busy women, and with all the skincare properties, I think this would be something we can all appreciate.

And a completed LOTD featuring the CC Cream, and other Chanel goodies:

    All products used:

Face: Chanel CC Cream 20 Beige, Chanel Natural Finish Loose Powder 10 Limpide

Cheeks: Chanel Notorious Sculpting Veil, Chanel Bronze Rose

Lips: Chanel Rouge Allure in 187 Genial

Eyes: NARS Primer, Chanel 33 Prelude, Makeup Store Chocolate Cheesecake

Brows: Shu Uemura Brow Manicure Ash Brown, Shu Uemura Pencil 09 Seal Brown

Lashes: Customised layered my own pair

I hope this review has been helpful!  Happy Saturday!  I am off to enjoy mine now!

    Thanks for reading.

Testing out Chanel Foundations: Perfection Lumiere and Vitalumiere Hydra

    Hi!

This entry will be my quick review of two new Chanel foundations which I have been trying out, and deciding which one I will eventually purchase. I think it is useful and only practical to try out foundations before buying them, especially since I already have several tried and tested foundation routines which I like and I really don't need to rush out and buy more. But being able to test-drive a new foundation for a week or so, will just help make my decision to buy much easier.  Therefore, BAs should really be more generous in allowing potential customers to try out, and sample new products.  I know they are very nice to their regular customers, but what about reaching out to new customers and converting the cynics to your brand? I hate it when BAs tell you 'sorry no samples' when they don't even check their drawers, or provide you with more product information, or even attempt to entice you by sharing product information.  I am just glad I managed to score these samples easily enough when the product first launched, and I was probably thick-skinned enough to ask for them..

(Gosh, don't even know where that rant came from....and this is the third time I am typing an intro to this entry, Onsugar should really have an auto-save function, I was pretty sure the first time I started typing the intro it wasn't a rant at all)

Anyway, overall, I am quite a fan of Chanel foundations and bases - from their Vitalumiere Aqua, to Mat Lumiere and their Sheer Illuminating bases.  I also like to use Pro Lumiere on people that I do makeup for (photographs beautifully!) - but it will be discontinued.

links to my previous Chanel foundation review entries - can't seem to do the hyperlinks lately too :(

    Mat Lumiere - http://retailtherapy.onsugar.com/Foundation-Routine-Chanel-MAT-Lumiere-12695974

    Vitalumiere Aqua - http://retailtherapy.onsugar.com/Rave-Chanel-Vitalumiere-Aqua-Skin-Perfecting-Base-16280869

I had been wanting to buy Perfection Lumiere (my samples arein shades 10 beige and 20 beige) for the longest time - think late last year, when I came across the information on this new foundation, and then people started talking about it, and reviews came out and all that.   I couldn't wait to get my hands on them, but during one of my research on the shade range at Cafe Makeup... I wasn't too sure which shade would be right for me (either a 10 or 20 - but I am starting to think I am in between either).  Then more mixed reviews surfaced, and I knew I wasn't going to just buy it without giving it a good week of usage first.  This is when samples really come in practical handy - I wanted to be sure I like it before I buy the whole darn thing. I think it retails for S$79 which is quite reasonable for a Chanel foundation.  I had expected it to cost more - the Pro Lumiere which it replaces retails for more than $80 if I remember correctly.

My friend Pearl got me the samples of the Vitalumiere Hydra (my sample is in shade 10 Beige) when I was telling her I was intrigued by another new foundation from Chanel - the Vitalumiere Aqua compact - have seen reviews of this, and I was quite intrigued.  But this Vitalumiere Hydra is a relatively new release - and it seems to be very similar - cream foundation in a compact, except that it seems to be an Asia exclusive.  This retails for about $90 and is refillable.

Okay.. with all that out of the way.. let's start with the Vitalumiere Hydra (10 Beige)

    product description

The surprise of a fresh and moisture-rich foundation, in a compact case, always ready for touch-ups. Thanks to its fine emulsion texture, Vitalumière Hydra melts away like a caress over your skin. In an instant, the complexion becomes even, dewy, plumped and radiant, bathed in comfort for up to 8 hours. Its SPF 15 / PA++ protects the skin from damaging sun rays.

Ideal for unifying complexion, the medium coverage stays natural, with a delicate satin finish. Its shades are designed to perfectly match Asian skin tones. It is now easy to face hectic lifestyles in beauty!

    my thoughts

I am sorry I didn't take a brand new product shot - I haven't planned on doing this entry til recently when I was halfway through the testing period - I still have samples of this foundation, but I didn't want to open it and risk contamination and product drying out before I get to use it.

The sample is housed in a pan much like a MAC eyeshadow pan size, and it is able to last me 6 - 8 uses, which is a pretty decent period of time to try out a foundation, and form impressions about it.  I only tried to use the sponge once, but later on I prefer to just dab my brush into the pan, and stipple, and buff it onto my face.  I also spray a little MAC fix+ onto my brush before I start to buff and blend the product into my skin.  (I normally already have a 50spf bb cream on my face - like the Dior or Lancome ones - so this foundation is like a final finish touch to the whole routine).

I usually set this foundation with my Chanel ultra-fine translucent loose powder (it's kinda like MUFE HD powder).  And the overall finish is flawless, smooth and dewy.  I think it is suitable for those with dry/ dehydrated skin, if you have very oily skin or like matte finish you probably won't like this foundation.   It is easy to blend, and lasted me the whole day without touch ups after I set with the loose powder.

I do enjoy this foundation and the texture too (because it is quite rich without being heavy or thick) - and that it is in a compact meant easy to throw in the travel makeup bag. Only thing is that it is a little pricey, and I would be more inclined to spend the same amount in a liquid foundation. I also don't like the idea of using the same sponge to dip into the compact, hence I prefer using a brush to do the job.

Overall, I do like this foundation, but I probably won't purchase the full-sized product in the near future.

Next we have Perfection Lumiere in the shade 20 Beige - I will be trying out 10 Beige this week, to confirm whether I should go for 10 or 20.

    Product description

PERFECTION LUMIÈRE controls every detail of a perfect complexion to offer a tailor-made result.

In a simple step, the skin-embracing texture becomes one with the face. It follows its every movement, with adjustable coverage.

    The results:

With PERFECTION LUMIÈRE, perfection has never been so simple.

    my thoughts

When I first swatched the foundation, I was a little surprised at how fliud it is... somehow I had thought it would be creamier or thicker..but it is a very smooth and liquidy (but not like watery gel like Vitalumiere Aqua, and not so thick like Mat Lumiere).  It smells awesome, and has a nice smooth matte finish after you blend it at the back of the hand. This tiny tube also lasted me 6 - 8 uses, which is impressive.

Since I am using shade 20 for this foundation, I thought it might just be a tad too dark for me.. so I sometimes use a brightening or lighter base before the foundation.  For examples - the Chanel Sheer Illuminating base, Rachel K CC Cream, and also the Ettusais MIneral BB cream. All work well to balance out or compensate any potential darkness arising from using Shade 20 Beige.  But in any case... it blended nicely on my hands and also on my face when I tried it once without a base ----- what i am trying to say is that whether I am using 10 or 20, it shouldn't matter because I think I can somehow adapt to both quite comfortably, and I have enough bases to 'adjust' and tweak to my own coloring.

I only use a brush to buff and blend the foundation - my faves are the RT buffing brush, and the new expert face brush (I need to blog about the new brushes soon).   I don't know why some reviews mentioned this foundation as being patchy and hard to blend, because blending this for me, was not an issue at all.

The finish is kind of velvety smooth, and the coverage is medium.  I still need to conceal my spots, and I do set this with the Chanel Translucent Loose Powder in 10. The foundation also lasted a good 10 hours on me without fading.  It doesn't look cakey, and I think it is a great everyday flawless foundation.   What I like most about this foundation is that it didn't go emphasise any skin imperfections, and is able to create the illusion a smooth canvas, especially after I set it with powder.  It also photographs quite well in my opinion.  One of the foundations with the best finish that I have tried.

I know I will buy this foundation pretty soon.... and since it's a permanent addition, I would probably wait for some metro or robinson storewide sale to make my purchase - whether I would evenutally get 10 or 20 will depend on this week... when I try out shade 10 Beige. *** I would insert my updated thoughts on shade 10 Beige in this entry after I am done ****

In this case, I am glad I got to try it out and ensure that I really like it enough.

    swatches of both foundations

swatches of all my chanel foundations

as you can see, there is some variation in the shades even though they are the same number

    comparisons to other chanel foundations

Vitalumiere Aqua - best for second skin feel and texture.  very light in texture, and gives good enough coverage on good skin days.  good for normal skin.  I love how naturally great it makes my skin looks when I don't need full coverage.

Mat Lumiere - best for those with oily skin, it is matte without being dull or cakey.  gives medium to full coverage among the Chanel foundations I have in my stash.  Lasts well throughout the day, and great everyday foundation.

Vitalumiere HYDRA - best for people with dry skin, to give a luminous (not shiny oily) finish - does not emphasis dry skin, and smooths out imperfections.  Coverage is comparable to Mat Lumiere if you build up the product.

Perfection Lumiere - gives the same smooth and perfect skin finish as Vitalumiere, but with more coverage, and longer lasting wear.  Good for most skin types, but might be more suitable for those with normal to oily skin.

a note on my Chanel loose powders

I have both the Natural Finish loose powder that comes in different shades and mine is in 10.  It looks almost just white.. and I used it most of the time to set my chanel foundations.  It gives a smooth finish to my foundations and make them last longer.  Almost makes my T-zone look less oily/ shiny.

I also have the Ultra Fine loose powder that comes in only one universal shade.  This is even finer, contains less product than the Natural Finish loose powder (10g versus 30g, and $82 versus $70ish).  I use this sometimes when I want a particularly flawless HD finish. It also helps to 'seal' my foundation, making it rather sweat-proof.

I am not currently using any Chanel powder foundations, so I can't comment.  The last time I used them was perhaps 10 years back, and then I find that they tend to oxidise after a few hours of wear.  Times and technology have changed since then, and I am sure they are way better now.  It is just that I don't normally reach out for powder compact foundations in general.

I hope this has been helpful, and thank you for reading.

Review: Shu Uemura Instant-glow Immediate Radiance Skin Perfecting Cream

    Hi!

This is a review of Shu Uemura's Stage Performer - Instant-glow Immediate Radiance Skin Perfecting Cream (I shall only refer it to "Radiance Skin Cream" later on...what a mouthful of a descriptive product name!).   I had purchased this back in Dec when I was in Hong Kong.  And prior to that, this is a product which have often got my attention whenever I go to a Shu Uemura store or counter.

You won't find this product displayed among their makeup section.  Instead it is usually placed together amongst their skincare range - and yes, indeed, this is more of a tinted moisturiser type of product.   It contains 50ml of product, I can't be sure about local prices here (I think should be over S$70 correction >>>  it is S$88).  The packaging is a plastic tube, and you just squeeze out a tiny glob of the product and blend it all over your face after moisturiser (I avoid this around the eyes).  And I usually follow with a tiny bit of liquid foundation for more coverage.

    From the website description:

Glow from the inside out! Stage inspired multi-functional beauty cream to enhance makeup finish and deliver a natural glow.  Contains Ginko leaf extract to fight oxidation, instantly skin appears more luminous, translucent and smooth, provides 24 hour lasting moisture.

    *********************************

As you can see below, the product is mostly a white cream when you squeeze it out of the tube - and there are also little brown bits.  This amount you see is enough for my whole face.  The brown bits sort of 'burst' when you blend out the product, and it turns into a skin color.  Such products aren't really a novelty, I think Soap & Glory has a tinted face bronzer like this, and one of the Origins face cream product has similar properties.

It is a very smooth and creamy product.  I use my fingers to dab dots of this all over my face.  Then I work quickly and gently to blend this all over my face in smooth strokes, to create a thin film all over my face.  I try not to overblend or overwork it into my skin for some reason.  I guess I didn't want to interfere too much with the smoothness of the product.

What I do notice immediately, and how my complexion is even-ed out, due to the tinted nature of the cream.  I also noticed how my pores is also smoothed out, and my skin looks smoother and glowy.  This makes the perfect base for my liquid foundation. And if you have very clear skin, you don't even need any foundation afterwards.

This is one of the best primers I have tried (I use the word  'primer' in terms of its function, as a makeup base, though perhaps this product may not necessarily be invented as a primer).   It enhances  the finish of my foundations, and because it is quite an emolient product, I would not use it with my richer creamier foundations -- and I think it would be fabulous under a powder foundation too.

Do note, this is not a "oil-control", "stay matte" product.  I do need to blot my face maybe 4 - 5 hours throughout the day.  If you don't like a naturally dewy smooth look to your skin, or have extremely oily complexion you might not like this product.  If you have a bit of dry skin, and you want something to perk up your skin, and add moisture, this is something you want to check out.   I personally like it even though I have an oily T-zone, because I really like the look of fresh clear skin (or rather, trying to 'fake it' hur hur hur).

A pic I took hastily one of the many mornings I have been using this product.  I think you can tell the luminosity, and the natural radiance of the skin appearance.

And another picture with the full works.

I can tell the appearance of pores have been minimised when I examine my 'pores' areas closely in a mirror, and when I take pictures (you know how the macro settings are so unforgiving to pore sizes) and I realise that in photography and in real life, visually, your skin just looks a lot smoother.

I can't help but think of Clarins beauty flash balm as I was reviewing this product.  They are different products, I know, but both fall into that category of skincare bases,  and I think, for now, I can say that I much prefer the Shu Uemura radiance skin cream.

I hope this review has been helpful, and thank you for looking!

Overview: Liquid Foundations, Loose Powders & Fave Combinations

    Hi hi!

This entry will feature, as the title states, my overall thoughts on liquid foundations, loose powders and my favourite combinations.  This might turn out to be a massively messy and disorganised entry, but I want to include everything I can think of in one entry, and always be able to link back here whenever I want to mention or refer to any foundation.

It is no secret that I am a foundation junkie, and foundation/ base products are the first I check out when venturing to a new makeup brand/ counter.  If anything is touted to be refining, flawless, long wearing, pore refining, then I will be hopelessly sucked in!  I am also very lucky to be able to try out many great foundations because of my blog, and I can make lots more recommendations based on my experience.

** none of these foundations have known to break me out, PHEW!  And note, I don't use any MAC foundations except for the Face & Body.  [I have tried Studio Sculpt and Studio Fix Fluid in the past - but I have found their shade range is a little off for my tone - I think I hover between NC 15-20].

I seldom use a brush to apply loose powder, unless I want a light sweep to clean away eyeshadow fallouts, so I mainly use the powder puffs that come along, and gently press and roll the puff over my face.   And I usually SET my face with powder AFTER the whole makeup routine is done.

A few things I just want to point out though:

    1. it is impossible to expect any foundation to last 15 - 16 hours no matter what they claim, due to our horrid humid weather, and especially if you are exposed to the insane weather here.  The humidity and heat will definitely wear off your makeup products, in which case, you want to keep your face fresh, dry and shine-free --- and not still look like you have a thick layer of foundation that wouldn't budge under the hot sun.

    2. it is also impossible to expect a foundation that will make you OIL FREE and SHINE FREE for the whole day -- maybe 4 - 5 hours ok, and then you prolly need to blot your T-zone.  Which is very normal and human.  Any foundation that can keep you absolutely shine-free for the whole day, or claims to be, you got to be careful of how it does that!  I would make sure I remove every single bit of that foundation off my face, otherwise it will clog up your face!  So, it is OK to be shiny after a few hours, it is OK to blot/ powder your face time to time.

    3. we don't want a thick layer of foundation.  [remember Lisa Eldridge's acne covering tutorial?]  Foundation is meant to even out your skin tone.  Use concealers sparingly only where you need to.  so I tend to like medium buildable coverage foundations instead of a thick layer of full coverage foundation.  This also depends on my skin condition, right now, with the exception of spots, I am quite happy, and most foundations I use are able to give me a smooth even coverage without major concealing.

    4. I believe in spending the most on foundation.  Hence, most of the foundations in my stash are in the mid to high (but not super high end either) range.  Foundation is something you put all over your face, and you want to make sure the ingredients are the best, the formulation doesn't cake up your skin, and also give you some skincare properties at the same time, such as sun protection.

    5. I have oily-combination skin, and usually I am in the second palest skintone of most foundation brands - neither too pink nor yellow.  So it is relatively easy for me to eyeball, and pick a foundation that matches my skintone.  This is also bad, cos then I end up with this scary arsenal of foundations.

In this entry, I would not be showing any product swatches, or how I apply them... because I have already many related entries on these.  I will just try to describe as succintly as I can, and hopefully it will be hopeful to some of you.

If there is any foundations pictured here which I missed out, it is most likely that I haven't gotten to using them enough to talk about them... and do leave a comment, if you want me to do any specific  follow up entry, I will be most glad to do so!

Some foundations may over-lap some categories

    BEST EVERYDAY FOUNDATIONS

Clarins Extra Firming Foundation, Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum, Chanel Mat Lumiere, Cover Girl Clean Oil Control

    • Lasts relatively well throughout the day (8 hours), with a fresh and clean appearance
    • Goes best with a colored loose powder if you want more coverage
    • Mat Lumiere and Cover Girl are great at keeping shine at bay
    • Easy to blend, and all the colors suit me (esp Mat Lumiere 20, which was a tad dark on me, is now OK cos maybe I am burnt ard my neck and so I can go with a slightly beigier shade)

** Try setting with DermaBlend, Laura Mercier Translucent, Chanel Natural Finish Loose Powder

    BEST PERFECT FINISH FOUNDATIONS

Lancome Teint Miracle (both the LIQUID AND CREAM versions), Guerlain Lingerie De Peau, Armani Lasting UV, NARS Sheer Glow

    • All are relatively light in texture.
    • All give flawless, slightly glowy but not oily finish
    • Teint Miracle foundations last the longest
    • The Armani Lasting UV did not last as long in our humid weather, but it was beautiful while I was in HK where the weather was cooling and not as humid.
    • NARS Sheer Glow needs to be matched with NARS Loose Powder for maximum impact in terms of finish and lasting power
    • I use these when I want my skin to be extra extra flawless, and I usually top up with Chanel Ultra Fine loose powder (it's like MUFE HD POWDER)

** Try setting with Chanel Ultra Fine Loose Powder, NARS Loose Powder, La Mer Powder

BEST TO SMOOTH OUT COMPLEXION [gives illusion of poreless smooth skin]

    Maquillage Cream Stick Foundation

One of my all time faves - this is a repurchase which I never got to open, because of the many others I am currently using.

** Try setting with Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Powder, MUFE Super Matte

    LONG LASTING FOUNDATIONS

Estee Lauder Double Wear, Chanel Mat Lumiere, Chanel Pro Lumiere, Max Factor Lasting Performance

Chanel Mat Lumiere has the coverage and lasting power of Double Wear without the 'thickness', which I now like.  Double Wear is my top recommendation for long lasting hard core foundation.

** Try setting with DermaBlend, or Laura Mericer Translucent

If you want a luxe foundation, try the Dior Totale Capture and Cosme Decorte cream foundation.  The Dior Total Capture foundation feels creamy and slightly heavy to some people, but it blends it and is not cakey.  I find it to be an average performer, perhaps not really worth the over $90 price tag.  The Cosme Decorte cream foundation smells amazing, and the texture is ultra smooth and whipped.  But it is not very long lasting, however, though, as compared to the Shu Uemura face architect, the Cosme Decorte one has a much better consistency and finish.

I use the two MAX FACTOR foundations mainly to lighten any foundations if necessary.  But I hardly need to do  that right now, because everything fits.  The same goes for the Chanel Pro Lumiere, because it is in the shade 030, and used to darken any foundations which are too stark on me.

BEST FOUNDATIONS IF YOU ARE HAVING A GOOD SKIN DAY AND DON'T NEED MUCH COVERAGE

MAC FACE & BODY FOUNDATION, NARS SHEER GLOW

I really like MAC Face and Body for the real skin texture/ finish it gives, but my insecurity about my spots showing through means I hardly reach for it.  I only use it on days when I know I won't be out the whole day or meeting a whole bunch of people.   I also find that the MAC Face & Body works a lot better, more coverage if you pour it into the palm of your hand, and warm it up before applying directly to your face.  Both foundations also photograpgh very well.

    BEST FOUNDATIONS FOR PHOTO TAKING

MAC Face & Body, Armani Lasting UV, Lancome Teint Miracle, Chanel Mat Lumiere

[I think this is self-explanatory?  Your face will look even more smooth and flawless with these foundations on]

    BEST OVERALL LOOSE POWDER

    Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Powder

It's not that expensive, it is translucent, so suitable for all skintones. Finely milled, and gives lasting smooth finish to any foundation.  Only downside, it is quite hard to find in SG, except at True Colors and we all know the products there all smell FUNKY.  Ewwww.

    MY PERSONAL FAVOURITES

La Mer Powder, Chanel Natural Finish, MUFE Super Matte

These give some extra SLIGHT coverage, and smooth flawless finish.    I love my La Mer powder the best, the texture is somehow so creamy, and so fine, and it evens out your skintone even if you just have sunscreen on.   (but it's still translucent, doesn't add color)

The Everyday Minerals powder, and I have several of their samples, while they are smooth and finely milled, I find they don't sit too well on my skin?  It's like the powder just sits on my skin, and not 'fused' with my foundation.  Maybe because of the mineral formula, and/or I am not applying them right.

    FAVOURITE FOUNDATION+POWDER COMBINATIONS

Teint Miracle foundations + La Mer Powder

Chanel Mat Lumiere + Chanel Natural Finish Loose Powder

Clarins Extra Firming + Laura Mercier

Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum + Laura Mercier / La Mer

NARS Sheer Glow + NARS Loose Powder

I have not mentioned any PRIMERS, POWDER FOUNDATIONS and BB CREAMS in this entry.  Do let me know if you want me to do a similar overview for FACE PRIMERS - cos that's another area where I can ramble on and give you a basic low down.

I hope this has been helpful, and if you have any specific questions, please leave them in the comments below - I hope the 'format' isn't too messy, and somehow it makes sense?

    My Foundation Wishlist:

    1. Burberry Liquid foundation

    2. Laura Mercier Silk Creme (hope I got the name right)

    3. Estee Lauder Double Wear Light

    4. Chanel Le Blanc Liquid foundation

    5. Dior Nude

    6. La Mer Creme Foundation

Thanks for reading!   And kudos to you, if you made it this far!  :)

    Clinique Goodies!

Hi hi, just want to showcase a bunch of Clinique goodies I received some weeks back at an event (more details on that event mid Feb), but you can read all about it from this Her World article here. (it isn't about the event per say, but Celestine Sng was the makeup artist that day, and the event featured a fashion collaboration between Clinique and American designer, Milly - think specially customised makeup palettes).

We have a couple of mascaras, a couple of foundations, and a couple of glosses (of which I gave one away recently).

Let's start with the mascaras!  Incidentally, the pixiwoo sisters just posted a Clinique mascara overview HERE.

And this little contraption here, which is a bottom lash mascara -- well in the Asian market, I don't think this is that new of a product, I have seen the Japanese lashes frenzied market selling mascara just for the lower lashes for a long time... it is interesting that Clinique has also come up with one too.  These little mascaras would be great for reaching the lashes on the inner corners of your eyes too, I think.

And the gloss, which is in #13 Fireberry, a redden pinky gloss with gold flecks.  I can't seem to open the tube to take a pic of the wand!

And two foundations, I will use them in LOTDs soon.. I just hope the colours match me!  Otherwise, I may have to pass it to my sister to help me test them out.  Seems a tad dark on me.

derma white bright C stick makeup (SPF15/PA) , this is a makeup that promises defense against dark spots, discolourations and premature signs of aging.  I think the white middle part is the vitamin C treatment.  It promises long wearing and brightening effects.  Oil-Free and for all skin types.

a cream foundation, also in the same shade:

I will be sharing my thoughts on these products in time to come.

    Thanks for looking!

All about Foundations - Updated Routine and RMK & Shu Uemura Raves!

    Hi hi!

    * This is going to be a rambling post but I will be raving about the RMK Base eventually somewhere in here!*

I like to try out foundations.  The only thing is, you can't be rotating too many different foundations at any time, unlike blushers or eyeshadows or glosses, cos well, foundations all look kind of the same anyway after application.  Anyway, I always tend to go for the higher end brands, because for one thing, they can match your shade at the counter, and you can ask loads of questions, and the 'technology' of these foundations are superior.. not that I don't like 'drugstore' ones, but I have never tried one that matches my skintone (the silkygirl one is always so beigy, and the Rimmel ones are too dark even their lightest tone), and other brands like Revlon, ZA, Loreal, while they are raved about, costs almost $30 or slightly more each anyway, and I think I would rather pay a bit more for someone/ somewhere I can get exact match.

Ok, before I go on and on about all the products, the picture below shows my foundation container (which I purchased at Daiso), it is a little too small for all the junk that goes inside, but anyway, this works for now. I am also showing you my foundation brush of the moment, which is the Essence of Beauty dual ended foundation/ concealer brush.

Contents: Foundations (Dior, MUFE, MAC, Shu Uemura, Clinique) Primers (Chanel, Maybelline, RMK), Face Powders (MAC MSF Natural, MAC Sculpt & Shape, MUFE Loose Powder), Concealers (MAC Studio Finish, and MAC Studio Sculpt)

I am almost running out of the Clinique and MUFE foundation by now..so the box should have a little more room and not so packed.

And this is my current favourite foundation routine for now, and the picture below shows the order in which I apply my foundation/ base.

Base: RMK Creamy Primer, Foundation: Shu Uemura Face Architect, Setting: MUFE Loose Powder, Concealer: Shu Uemura Nobura

I use the brush for the primer, foundation, and concealer.  I use the powder puff in the powder case.

    Other foundations I am rotating:

My Comments on the foundations I am currently using and whether I recommend them:

MUFE Mat Velvet+ I highly recommend this, and I think a couple of the other Onsugar bloggers here have also gotten this foundation.  I think this foundation is really long lasting, has very good coverage, and is quite mattifying.  I blot less often when using this foundation.  Overall good performer.  I think this retails for $50+ ??  I can't remember, definitely will repurchase.

Dior Extreme Fit Liquid Foundation This claims to be 'extreme wear flawless makeup' and I agree.  Don't let the smooth and rather liquidy texture fool you.  It blends into your skin flawlessly, and is not 'thick' like how some liquid foundations can be.  There is also a slight scent which is very pleasant to me. Again, I highly recommend this product, especially if you want to try out Dior foundations.  I have repurchase this several times.

MAC Studio Sculpt This is full coverage foundation, IMO. Very thick and creamy.  I find the shade just a little off on me, but that is easily corrected after I powder my face.  A little too thick for work I think, so I only use this at night, or when I know I won't be sweating in our hot humid weather.  It doesn't break me out, so that's good.  I won't repurchase this though.

Shu Uemura Nobura Cream Foundation Very smooth and creamy thick foundation.  Full coverage.  You need some effort to work it into your skin, or maybe I am not using it right or something.  The first few times I used it, I find the product sink into my pores making them look quite disgusting.  And the shade is a little off for my skin too, even though it looks fine when I got matched at the counter.  It is a little pricey I think it is $65 or $70.  But you just need a little to cover the whole face.  Now I am using it as a concealer instead.  I still have soooo much left, I won't be repurchasing in the near future.

Shu Uemura Face Architect Foundation * My Product Rave*

    From the website,

Luxuriously creamy foundation designed to achieve buildable levels of coverage. Remodel the skin for ideal complexion. High concentration of Depsea water allows for smooth application and leaves skin feeling hydrated and fresh.

    Recommended for customers who:
    - prefer to look natural while correcting imperfections at the same time
    - have concerns of dehydrated skin condition
    - prefer semi-matte to glow finish

Omg!  I love love love this foundation now.  Just a little bit is enough, and it blends beautifully.  I think I love this as much as my MUFE and Dior Foundations.  I am not sure about the 'remodel' effect, but I really agree with the skin feeling hydrated and fresh.  Anyway, I highly recommend this product if you are looking for a cream foundation.  Well, it is not a solid cream foundation.  It is more of a liquid-cream foundation, much like a lotion in a tub, if you know what I mean.  I apply this with my Essence of Beauty brush, and there are not streaks.  Now my foundation is like my fave part of the whole makeup process.  Love love love! The only downside, this retails for $72.

My Comments on the primers I am currently using and whether I recommend them:

Chanel Modeling Effect Base (SPF30) I have raved about its scent many times, and I still love this.  It is very watery and gives a faint whitening effect and sheen to the face.  I can't say much about this product making your pores less obvious, but it does have a whitening effect if you are into that sort of thing.  At $72, I think it is kind of an extravagant purchase, but if you are feeling super generous, why not?

Maybelline Angelfit Pore Zero Base (SPF25)  This has a thicker consistency as compared to the Chanel base, and I like the pink tinge to this product. As for the pores smoothing part, it is NOT as though suddenly my face appears poreless, but I do like how it helps the foundation application process a lot smoother, because when I was using this everyday, I was using my fingers to apply the foundation, and with this primer, the blending becomes easier.  And at $19.90 (or cheaper whenever there are promotions or expos going on) this is really good value for money.  I highly recommend this product!

RMK Creamy Makeup Base (SPF11)  * My Product Rave*

Actually I would think the Japanese would pack higher SPF in this primer.  Haha.  But right now, I can say this is my Holy Grail primer.  We all have different reasons for using a primer.  Besides the ease of blending, making your foundations last longer, some people want a primer to even out skin tone, others want to fill in fine lines, and for me personally, unless I invest in pricey IPL treatments or some laser thingy, my main reason for a primer is to even out my PORES.  I have tried Dior primers,MAC, Smashbox, but this RMK goody is really able to hide my pores.  I have used this for the past 3 days, and I am really awed at the results.  Even my friends have commented that this is super effective, and they can see the difference.  This  retails for $58, and when I bought it at Isetan that day, the BA told me the stocks are running out fast.  It is not the cheapest product, but if you are looking for a really flawless finish (no pores) to your face, go for this product.  You need it.

And before I end this long entry, I just want to say, I am also eager to try out the RMK foundation samples which the BA gave me, and I have high hopes for this brand of makeup for my foundations, besides Shu Uemura.

And here are a couple of pictures of the 'flawless' fresh face I am talking about -

    before I left the house.

And at the end of the day:

Apologies for the weird font size and spacing in this entry... Can't figure them out.

Hope this has been helpful, and any questions, do leave them in the comments. Thanks!

    RMK Hauling & Pretty Art

    Hi!

I bought ONE RMK product today. Click here for the RMK website, to see their products range etc.  If you haven't heard of RMK, it is a very famous Japanese beauty line (which I believe is started by a makeup artist?)

I have been wanting to try their foundations/ skin base stuff, but never got to... I don't know why, but it is not on my radar at all.  I did check out their counters while I was in Tokyo earlier this year, but because I don't speak the language, it can be quite challenging, not to mention frustrating, to communicate to the BA what I needed/wanted.

Anyway.. about foundations and all, I always believe that the Japanese got it right.  In terms of formulations, skin color range, and the flawless glowing texture are some of the qualities I associate with Japanese makeup (eg, Shu Uemura).  While I like their base products, I don't quite enjoy their eye makeup colors as they are often too shimmery and pastel for my liking.

To cut a long story short, I was reminded again of my RMK lemming when I saw this RMK product featured in STYLE magazine. If you can see the text in the picture below,  the keywords are "semi-matte makeup base that renders pores virtually invisible and keeps makeup looking fresh all day".  I am SOLD when I read about this.  Yup, I know, I am a sucker.  And I still have bottles of my other makeup bases unopened stashed in my drawer somewhere, so I don't even NEED yet another makeup base.

So, I got one in the shade 02.  01 is a clear base, 02 is to even out skin tone, and 03 has the same properties but suited for darker skin.  $58 each.

    Product Description:

"Made with a blend of three powder particles in different sizes and shapes to cover all kinds of uneveness of the skin's surface.  Its creamy texture an even and moisturising veil, leaving your skin supple within a polished half matt touch on the surface.  Choose from 00 to filter for a perfect translucency and 01 and 02 helps brighten the complexion"

The texture of this base reminds me of my Canmake base which I have used months ago before my Maybelline PoreZero base.  It has a creamy texture and if you are used to those silicon/ gel like bases, you might not be used to this type of base, but I prefer creamy base, and  the silicon types makes my foundation all patchy and yucky.

And they have this promotion, that with any purchase you get to buy this travel kit with a load of goodies, the toiletries bag and a eyemask at $60.

    Contents:

Cleansing Milk 30ml, Creamy Soap 30g, Skintuner Smoother 30ml, Face Protector SPF31 8g, Makeup Base 15ml, Control Colour N01 Silver 15ml, Creamy Foundation 103 Spf15 15ml   * the foundation is too dark for me, so my sister can use it.

On another note, I need to do a product rave of the Shu Uemura Face Architecture foundation.  Let me use it for another day or two, and I shall get back to you with the full details.  But I like how my face looks at the end of a day.  * I didn't touch up my face, just had to blot my T-zone.

I feel like I have been hauling so much lately, but I do want to just ramble about some cool products which I am loving!  So little time, and so much to talk about!

But obviously I have been on a foundation kick recently, and really into looking for skincare solutions.  I was telling my gf just now that my 2010 beauty resolution is to get better skin so I can leave the house with minimal makeup.  So in 2010, less MU hauling, more skincare TLC!!

Great naked skin is the sexiest and prettiest!

Sidenote:  This is what my youngest sister has been doing to her bedroom ever since she got back from her EU trip.... she is super talented in art, when she is ready, I will share her site link here, so you can go over and ogle at her artistic ramblings.  And she writes awesome too, on top of everything else.

The graphics are a mixture/ collage of her own drawings, random cards and posters.

That's all, and thanks for reading!

    LOTD - Cream eyeshadows

Just a simple look which I did before I go out for today.  I tried to use most of the new stuff which I purchased yesterday.  Mostly I was eager to try out the Shu Uemura foundation and the YSL cream eyeshadows.   As I list the products used, I will include some of my first impressions.  More detail reviews will be posted in due time.

Face: Chanel's Whitening Modeling Effect Base, Shu Uemura's Face Architect (764), and I used Shu Uemura's Nobura Cream Foundation in 974 as a concealer.  The Face Architect is a rich cream foundation, you really just need a little for the whole face, I prolly used a bit too much here.  I applied the foundation with my Essence of Beauty foundation brush.  The color 764 is a different tone, and slightly more tan than the 974 shade, and I think in pictures, doesn't make my face look so washed out.  I set the whole cream foundation thingy with a light dusting of the MUFE Super Matte Loose Powder.

    Cheeks: NARS Sin blusher

Eyes: All over the eyes, I used YSL Cream Shadow No1, and in the lids, YSL Cream Shadow in No4.  It feels a little wet and cooling to apply the eyeshadows (with a synthetic brush), but the product dries to a powdery look.  I think using cream shadows is the way to go, and there is no power fallout on my lash extensions.  But for good measure, I dabbed a little of NARS' Ashes to Ashes e/s over the lids.

I also dabbed some of the YSL's purple faux cils on the lower lashes.. not that you can actually see the color.  :p

Lips: YSL RV in No4 Sweet Honey

That's all, and thanks for reading!
