About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Review: Gorgeous Cosmetics Base Perfect Foundation & Eyeshadow Palette

    Hi hi!

This will be a review entry of two Gorgeous cosmetics items.  There are a ton of stuff which I need to sit down and do a proper review of... but it is always exciting to find something I like, and have been constantly using, and excited to share!  I have really enjoyed using both, for over the past 2 weeks.  The eyeshadow palette, makes me want to slap on some eye colors every morning, because they are a dream to use.

Gorgeous Cosmetics are exclusively available at Zalora.Sg  [Link link link] in case you aren't aware.  I have previously featured Zalora.Sg in this entry here.

For my swatches and introduction to Gorgeous Cosmetics, click HERE

Firstly, we have the Gorgeous Base Perfect Liquid Foundation.  I got mine in the lightest neutral shade 1N.

It has a rather light texture.  It feels velvety powdery texture.  It looks rather dark at the back of my hand and even on my face, as you will see in the application step by step later.  But it settles and blends perfectly into my skintone.

Here's what I LOVE, yes LOVE about the foundation:

    • The fresh slightly citrus-y scent.  Feels great when I am blending out the foundation, and catch a whiff of the scent.  But it doesn't linger on, and didn't cause any irritation to my skin.

    • It blends very quickly, and I usually use a buffing brush to work the foundation into my skin.  It doesn't dry too quickly so I can take my time to buff and blend the foundation.

    • The coverage is light to medium, and I doubt you can build it up to a full coverage without streaks and patches.  I usually set my foundation with the usual Chanel loose powder, or the La Mer loose powder.

    • The finish is a satin smooth texture, which is one of my favourite features of this foundation.  It just makes me look like I have very smooth skin, and my pores look significantly soothed out.

    • I like the consistency.  It is not the flowy liquidy type but rather a rather creamy texture.  I usually pump out one and a half glob of foundation out.

    • It is very long-lasting, on a work day, where I sweat, and go in and out of the air-conditioned office and out into the hot humid afternoons.  I can say that I still look fresh after a long day (yes, of course, I had to dab and blot my face but after that, my skin looks good as new).

    • I still need to blot my oily t-zone every few hours.  But I definitely don't look oily at all when I wear this foundation.

    • It did not oxidise on me, which is another plus.

I really don't have anything bad to say about this foundation.  Except perhaps that initially, I wasn't too used to the pump dispenser, and I either got too much product out, or I have to make a few 'false' pumps before anything comes out.  Other than that, the product itself is of superior quality, and I really enjoy using it for a variety of occasions, and with great results.  I really recommend this foundation to those with oily complexion, and also those who want a great everyday skin perfecting foundation.

    applying the foundation

after blending, and before any concealer

Next, we have the eyeshadow palette.  To be honest, I have only constantly been using the two lightest shades in the quad.  I just slap on these two colors on my lids on a daily basis, over an eyeshadow primer.  And I love the lightest peachy brown shade.

What is so impressive about this quad, or at least the two colors that I have been using, is that they are a dream to apply.  There is no fallout, and the eyeshadows just blend themselves out, so smoothly, and the colors is so rich, and intense.

you can see the amazing texture and payoff in this picture

and my step by step everyday look

I just use the same MAC217 brush to pick up the eyeshadows and blend them onto my lids.

I use abit of the darker brown to give some definition to the outer corners of the eyes.

but for an actual LOTD, I lined my eyes and put on falsies.

I did not use any browbone highlight shade at all.

The eyeshadows are equally long-lasting, and there is no fading and no creasing of colors.

This palette is a very flattering and wearable one for me.

I shall attempt to do a darker smokier look using the black eyeshadow in a future LOTD, hopefully!

I haven't gotten to use the liquid eyeliner, but if I do, I will mention my thoughts in subsequent entries.

On my lips, I am wearing MAC MarquiseD' lipstick, and on my cheeks, I am using Guerlain Blush G and MUFE Mat Bronze.

    Eyeliner used is Solone Black.

Overall, these two products I got to try out did not disappoint me at all.  I truly enjoyed using them, and if you are intrigued, head on over to Zalora.Sg to check out the rest of the range (pssss... their blushes are very lovely too!)

Review: Clé de Peau Silky Cream Foundation & Concealer

    Hi hi

This is my review of the two main Clé de Peau products which I had the chance to try out.  I will do a separate entry comparing the Clé de Peau lipsticks soon enough.  I have been using the Silky Cream Foundation for about three weeks, and started using the concealer for more than a week.

I have previously posted an overview entry consisting of product information, and swatches of almost all the foundation & concealer shades in this entry HERE, so do check that out.  (link)

I have also posted many FOTD pics on my instagram feed, so do follow me on instagram for regular updates of stuff which I am in the process of trying out.  (my instagram name makeup_blogette).

I also did a Clé de Peau combination of base products in this recent LOTD HERE, so you can also see how it looks like. (link)

Ok, with all that out of the way, let's look at the two products up close:

    [Silky Cream Foundation, 25ml S$189]

    [Concealer, 5g S$105]

    Packaging

    [Foundation]

The foundation is housed in the form of a slim tube, very nondescript and very good when you want to just have it in your makeup bag if you need to do your makeup on the go.  No heavy glass bottle, no glass jar container like my two other cream foundations -- the Lancome Teint Miracle cream & Cosme Decorte cream foundation. It is very similar to that of a BB cream, actually.   I also appreciate how the 'spout' of the tube is a skinny thing, so you never really squeeze out too much product - less wastage, more money saved, given the high price-point of this foundation.

    [Concealer]

The concealer is packaged like a lipstick, in a very sturdy metal casing. It looks super sleek, rather in contrast to the plastic tube of the foundation.  I never apply the concealer straight from the tube onto my face though.  I usually dab my finger on the concealer or use a brush to pick up product.  Again, the product is slim, there is no chance of any spillage and breakage if you put this inside your makeup bag.  Just don't mistake it for a nude lipstick.  :)

    Formula/ Texture/ Consistency/ Finish

    [Foundation]

The silky cream foundation is, as the name suggests, SILKY... while it is a cream product, it doesn't feel heavy at all.   I do feel that for this foundation -- a little goes a long way.  I have used it with the Cle de Peau pore minimising primer, I used it with various BB creams as a base, and the results are similar.  You do get a very smooth and even-ed out appearance even before any usage of concealer.  The coverage is light to medium depending on how much you use, and what method you apply it with.  Inititally I use my fingers to warm up the product and blended into my face.  I have also used synthetic buffing brushes to blend and buff this product into my face.  When using a brush, make sure you really buff, and not use too much product, otherwise streaks will appear, and the foundation will look too heavy.  You are less likely to make these boo-boos if you have your fingers.  Personally I am fine with both, having worked with this product for several weeks, I kind of know how to manipulate and play around with the texture to get the most perfect finish for my face.

There is also a slight scent to this product, it smells a little floral, just like the rest of the Clé de Peau skincare products. The scent doesn't linger on your face after you are done with your makeup.  It didn't break me out in the weeks which I used this foundation.  The foundation is able to last me the whole day without any fading nor oxidisation (whole day means a good 10 hours).  I do get oily after 3 - 4 hours.

    [Concealer]

The concealer is one of the very best I have tried in a while.  Prior to this concealer, I was using my Shu Uemura pro-gel cealer which is a cream concealer in a pot.  That was a concealer that truly lasted and has maximum coverage for the spots which I wanted to concealer.  It took me a longer while to actually open and try the Clé de Peau concealer because I was not sure of my expectations for it.  I do know that many people have swore by  this as their HG concealer.  I am not sure if you can see in the pictures below, you can see how SMOOTH the concealer is.  It blends seamlessly into my skin.  And that's how it works on my face.  It feels like a buttery smooth full coverage concealer, and it doesn't move and slip about.  It stays put and lasts the whole day I have my makeup on.  I have also tried using just a tiny bit to concealer my undereyes... which works fine too, but I really prefer to use concealers on spots.

Comparing this to my Shu Uemura pro-gel cealer, I would say that the Clé de Peau concealer has BETTER TEXTURE - I am just blown away by the smoothness, and the finish... but my Shu Uemura one just has that tiny bit more coverage.

Some quick snaps of my face when I am wearing the foundation and concealer.  (This is how I go to work everyday as you know by now.  I don't do much eye makeup at all).  And I have been waking up at 5am to do my makeup everyday, and I usually don't wash my face after a jog in the evening around 7pm.

2 fridays ago: taken at 6am and taken at around 5pm

only blotted twice, no powder touch ups

last week, somewhere in the middle of the day

    Bottom Line?

    [Foundation]

While the foundation is a great all round performer, I don't think it is really outstanding as compared to other foundations that I have used and liked for the same reasons.  For the price you pay, you won't be disappointed for sure, however, I don't think you will be super duper wow-ed by it too.  I like it, but I am not crazy about it, because I have used other foundations that give me the same results at a lower price point. I do think this is a great foundation for girls with dry skin, it is very soothing and keeps your skin looking soft and supple the whole day.  I have oily skin, and luckily it didn't look 'too much' on me either.    Do give it a try if you are looking into splurging on a decent foundation.

    [Concealer]

I am a lot more impressed by the concealer.  Would I purchase this for myself?  Yes, definitely.  I think I am addicted to the smoothness and finish of the concealer.  For me, it is totally worth every cent of the $105 price tag.  It doesn't replace my Shu Uemura concealer, but it seriously ranks up THERE as one of my all time fave concealers.    I definitely highly recommend the Clé de Peau concealer.  Do give it a swatch at the counters to see what I mean...

p/s -- How much does my face cost with all these products on?

Base products - Clé de Peau foundation 189, Clé de Peau concealer 105, La Mer Powder 125 [that's already more than $400!]

Lips -Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet 44

Cheeks - Clarins Bronzer 76, Nars Blush 40, MAC Lightscapade 46

    (not counting eye products)

But I always maintain to be able to fake a flawless canvas without looking made up... that's PRICELESS.  Perhaps nobody cares nor notices how much, but it's good for me to know I kinda look presentable and professional while carrying out my work etc etc.

Anyway, I hope you find this entry helpful, and if you have any questions, leave them in the comments below.

    Thanks for reading.  :)

Review: Clarins Hydra Luminous Flawless Powder Foundation & Instant Light Brush On Perfector

    Hi hi,

Another foundation feature!!!  I like to test out foundations, as you all know, and this time I will be showing you two new products from Clarins. They will be launched this month, and more information if you read on.   Hopefully, this will be useful to those of you who are shopping for a new foundation, especially powder foundations.

In this entry, you will find the following points:

    • what the foundation claims to do (some technical background information)

    • how it looks on me, and my comments about the overall texture

    • how it looks like after about 6 - 7 hours of wear

    Prices and my matching shade

The case and refills are sold separately (case is $20, refill $55).  I was sent two shades to try, and honestly both suit my skintone.  I have a fair neutral skin tone, neither yellow nor too pinky, and as you can see in the picture above, one is slightly beigey, and one is slightly pinkier.  But in terms of the shade, both are just nice (not too light nor dark).  I actually applied each shade on either side of my face to see which is a better match, and there is NO difference at all.  I believe if you have a stronger undertone, then it would make a difference, as my sister helped me to try out both the shades, and she is more suited for the 01 IY shade.   So she will be reviewing this foundation together with me!  :)

The formulation and ingredients about this foundation

This is "a foundation which offers a flawless sculpting, smoothing light while preserving the soft, supple qualities of the skin. A revolutionary, high-performance formula and a concentrate of plant essences specially designed for Asian women who dream of a radiant, even complexion in any circumstance, and a feeling of long-lasting comfort."

Thanks to the “3d Luminance” pigment, natural light is diffused in a way that sculpts the face:

    • on the rounded parts of the face, the pigment reflects all wavelengths of the light spectrum, in other words, very pure, white light. This maximum reflection highlights these areas, giving them maximum light and enhancing contours.

    • on the hollow parts of the face (sides of the nose, sides of the face), the pigment only reflects part of the light spectrum and diffuses back a bluish-white   light. Reflection of light is reduced, which heightens contrasts and refines facial contours.

I am not too sure if this effect is immediately apparent in my pictures, but I can say that the powder is very very finely milled and my sister tried on the other shade, and she is a regular powder foundation user (she has been using Dior extreme fit powder foundation  for years), she is very impressed, and given the lower price point, she says she will be switching to this powder foundation instead.  I will be featuring her in my subsequent entries featuring this product, so that you can also see how it works on somebody with different skintone and different skin type.

    My Half Face Experiment:

Does half my face look more sculpted? More flawless?

I like how using a powder foundation means you don't need to set your face, and everything is 'done'.  In terms of coverage, I would say it is a 4 - 5 (with 10 being the maximum coverage).  I still need to cover the spots which are more obvious, but everything else is mostly evened out.   I like how it has a powdery softness which is pretty long lasting (which you can see in later pics)  but since I have an oily T-zone, the area kind of wears off by the end of the night.

Actually in the next pic, I wore both shades of the foundation -- one shade on each side, to see which is more suitable for me ---- but I don't think there is a visible diff at all!!  So I went out wearing 2 different shades, and I don't think anyone knew the difference. So I told my sister she can take whichever shade that is better for her, while I will use the other one.

And this is the results -- which is the LOTD you saw in the previous entry.

and I had to end this entry abruptly and went out in this makeup... went out, sat in a hot crowded stadium, then had dinner at a non-ac place, drove around a bit, and came home...maybe 5 or 6 hours later??  and this is what is left:

Side by side comparisons: and totally random and unrelated, but check out how frizzzy my hair looks when it is freshly washed, and how silky smooth it is after a few hours.  No hair products, and no combing either!  :)

I wish the 'after 6 hours' pictures could capture how powdery soft my face still looks, especially the cheeks area... it's only the T zone that is slightly worn off...overall, I think it is something I would slap on, especially when I want a quick fix, and also for  that no makeup feel, cos with powder foundations, it is just a lot lighter than using liquids.... and this is definitely a very fine quality powder foundation that is not cakey, nor thick at all.

Epic entry there!!  I tried to be as detailed as I can and show pics etc etc ...  hope this is helpful, and if you think I have left out anything, leave them in the comments below!

    Thanks for reading.

    Overview: Liquid Foundations

    Hi Hi!

Just a quick entry on liquid foundations.  I started using them when I wanted more coverage. Personally I find that I need to touch up my foundation when I used to be a 2-way cake user (BTW my fave is the DIOR Extreme Fit power foundation).  So... when I make the big switch to Liquid Foundations (prolly the same time I bought the MAc 187 brush), I bought MAC Studio Fix Fluid.

Note that this is not in any way a full review of every single foundation.  I am just giving my opinions of each one in terms of their texture and durability.

    Here is a group picture:

*note that in my last few posts, pics are taken with my lousy iphone camera--- it's just much easier to upload without compromising

too much on quality to my amatuer eyes.

    From L to R:

Silky Girl Skin Perfect spf30++ 01 Light: I like this, but something about the tone doesn't suit my face, so I mix this when I am using the Maybelline foundation. Super cheap, and great as a everyday foundation.

DIOR Extreme Fit spf15++ 020: My fave foundation. Color is perfect for me.  This is an empty bottle, but I have a brand new bottle which I bought at the airport duty free ($56 duty free?)  I just LOVE Dior foundations.  But I have been rotating my foundations so I am not opening the new one yet.

MUFE HD Foundation in 120: ARGH.  Everything about this foundation is perfect, except the color, as you all know. So usually my sis uses this foundation if she is doing her MU at home.  But I mix the studio sculpt and now it is OK.  Very lasting too.  Definitely will get one in my correct shade when this runs out. Seriously, you need the tiniest amount of this.

MAC Studio Fix Fluid NC15 spf 15: Great basic foundation. Great color. Easy to blend, and buildable coverage.  :)

Maybelline Pure Fluid Mineral 020 Beige Eclat spf18:  I also have a backup of this.  But there is so much left in this bottle.  LOVE how it blends.  Not the longest lasting though.

Clinique Superfit 63 Fresh Beige: Super light, but unlike the MUFE HD foundation, which is also light in texture, this doesn't have much coverage. You need to use a lot to achieve medium to full coverage, from my own experience.  I feel like I have used so much already even though I just got this recently. Good product, but don't think I will repurchase.

MUFE Mat Velvet+ Oil Free, Water Resistant: Newest addition.  I haven't used it.  But it is super thick... and the MUA said I can use it as a concealer too.  I have good vibe about this.

Lying down in the centre, we have MAC studio sculpt foundation NC15 spf15: Due to launch in SG this Sept.  I like the scent of this... for some strange reason.  Ha ha.  And the texture is unlike anything I have tried before.  And of all the foundations, you use the least product for this.  Medium to full coverage. Smooth finish. And the only foundation I apply with my fingers.

    BEST Drugstore: Maybelline

    BEST High-end: Dior

    BEST starter/mid range: MAC

I usually apply foundations with a MAC187, seldom the MAC109 cos it tends to shed like crazy for cream/liquid products.  I also use the Beauty Blender sponge.  I bought a Rimmel 16 hour foundation before in the lightest shade 001 Ivory or smth but it was still too dark for me, so I gave away to my friend.

Yea.. that's all... and hope you find this helpful. And questions, please leave a comment.  I might do a overview of primers etc soon.  :)  Stay tuned!
