About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

No ads, no paid links etc please.  I am in charge of all content and pictures here.

I am not a makeup artist, nor do I have any professional training in makeup.

Clinique: The New Black Collection [Photos, Swatches & Double LOTDs]

    Hi hi!

This entry will feature all the products released with the Clinique Black Honey collection, which I have blogged about over the past couple of days.  I am sharing the product swatches, and also 2 looks which I tried out, being nspired by the two Black Honey looks that makeup artist Larry Yeo created for this collection.

** Heard from both Joey and Iris that the Black Honey Superbalm is extremely limited in quantity, so if you are thinking of getting it, better act fast!  :)

For collection information, and price list, click HERE.

For information of the release party and Black Honey inspired cocktails, and lots of good stuff, click HERE.

Let's start with the Black Honey Colour Surge Eyeshadow Quad - four wearable shades, which you can mix and match to create daytime looks and also more dramatic night time looks.

Black Honey Gradiant Blush palette -- super smooth, it looks a scary plum color in the pan, but looks more brownish pink on your cheeks.   Here, I swatched each section of the gradiant, followed by swirling all together.  There is no obvious shimmer to this color once applied on your cheeks.

Here are the two face charts, Black Honey Princess & Black Honey Dark Angel.

For more information & details on how to achieve the different looks, CLICK HERE.

I am just giving my own interpretation on both looks.  In creating both looks, I did not re-do my makeup, I just added more colors for the second look which is more dramatic & intense, which is a nice transition from day to night makeup.

The colors are a little washed out in my pictures, but in the 'dark angel' look, I took the browns higher up my crease, and also patting on the darkest brown on my lids close to the lash line, I also used a pencil liner to line the upper lids, and added an extra coat of mascara on the lower lashes.  In terms of liner, I did not line  my eyes in the honey princess look [only used a little bit of the darkest brown to softly define the lash line].

I also use the blusher to sculpt my cheeks more, and taking it around the sides of my forehead too.  I left the lips alone, as I didn't want everything to be too overwhelming.

I used all Clinique products, from foundation to the mascara, except for the MAC Pretty Please lipstick which I used as a base for the Black Honey Superbalm.

That's all, I hope this has been helpful, and thanks for looking!

p/s  All Clinique products were given to me for consideration, with the exception of the Black Honey Superbalm [my own purchase] & the eyeliner [already existing in my stash].

For full information about the Clinique The New Black collection, CLICK HERE.

The event started off with Clinique Brand Manager telling her about the inspiration behind the collection, and followed by a dance performance (and guests are welcome to pick up a few dance steps later at the event!).

After the dance, Elle Singapore's Makeup Artist of the Year 2009, Larry Yeo showed us two looks he created for the collection.  He demonstrated how the black honey palette can easily transformed a fresh day-time face into a sultry evening look with his two exclusive looks:

I have tried out the two looks yesterday, but I am not completely happy with the pictures, so I will post my Black Honey LOTDs at a later time.

Larry also carried out mini makeovers on Iris (Rouge Deluxe) and Joey (Joey's Space), while I just dabbed on the black honey balm on my lips.

In this picture all three of us had the same Black Honey balm on, but see how different and flattering it turned out on our lips :)

And took this picture of Larry trying out the products on Dawn Yang,

    ********      ********      ********       ********          ********         ********         ********          ********           ********         ********

Clinique has also teamed up with Ethan Leslie Leong (master mixologist at Drink Culture) to create two limited edition drinks:  Honeylicious and Seductions. These drinks are inspired by Clinique's unique Black Honey hue, an iconic berry shade that appears different on everyone, yet flattering on all - these drinks were concocted to showcase the versatility of Black Honey.

The two customised limited edition drinks will be available at Drinks Culture from now til 5 October 2011.

Drinks Culture is located at 50/51 Kreta Ayer Street, Singapore.

I had the Seductions cocktail, which has a lifting lavender fragrance, and it contains honey at the very last drops.  Very refreshing, fragrant, and not too strong.

It contains vodka, Parfait d'Armour, combined with ice.  Shaken and strained into a martini glass, and the honey is drizzled around the inside edge of the glass, where it settled into the bottom of the glass.

I like especially how feminine and stylish the drink looks.

The other drink, which Joey had, is the Honeylicious - a tantalising mocktail that boasts a delicate balance of refreshing sweetness that will leave you feeling brand new.  It consists of two crushed black grapes, mixed with lemon juice and simple syrup.

** ok, in this picture, the framed poster shows the Seductions cocktail information, while the glass of drink itself is the Honeylicious.

It's my second visit to Drinks Culture, and honestly, I quite like it better in the daytime.  :)  It's so white, relaxing, cosy too.  I think it's a great place to spend a quiet afternoon til evening.

My next Clinique entry will be product photos,  swatches and the two LOTDs.

Special thanks to Clinique and the organisers for taking care of us, and having us at the event.

NEW Clinique Fall 2011: The New Black inspired by Iconic Berry Hue Black Honey [Information, Photos]

This Fall, Clinique plays up our desire for the alluring with its latest, limited edition color collection of sensously seductive shades, The New Black. The collection is inspired by Black Honey, a unique Clinique colour that works as one universal shade for the eyes, lips and cheeks that is flattering on all skin tones.

Ultra wearable for a completely feminine look, The New Black is versatile, easily transforming a fresh day-time to a sultry evening look.  As part of Clinique's philosophy of offering a custom-fit beauty experience, The New Black's range of colors are buildable so you can wear them together or separately as you please.

Black Honey was unveiled in 1971 as Clinique's new lip gloss shade, and it took the market by storm and quickly gathered a strong cult following.  It is like NARS Orgasm shade, if you want to think of a more recent equivalent, or Chanel's Dragon, etc etc.  Rarely can one shade of colour, the iconic Clinique berry shade, appear so different on everyone, yet flattering on all.  The colour was an instant success and women swarmed to Clinique counters for their dose of Black Honey.

In 1989, when Black Honey was later launched as an Almost Lipstick, no one could have guessed the incredible impact it would have.  Since then, legions of devoted women have been stuck on Black Honey.  It has become a serious cult favourite that quickly evolved into an unforgettable modern classic.

The New Black collection consists of three products, that promises scrumptious texture, and versatility that will leave you reaching for this highly covetable collection time and again, be it a weekend date or boardroom meeting.   All products are limited edition, in the Black Honey hue.

Colour Surge Eye Shadow Quad  S$57

    Gradient Powder Blusher  S$53

Sublty illuminating your complexion with a natural glow and radiance, the Gradient Powder Blusher works like a velvet dream.  This ultra-wearable limited edition palette promises a soft, perfected finish.  Blending flawlessly into the skin, this perfect palette compliments a whole range of skin tones.

    Superbalm Moisturising Gloss  S$26

Shiny, delectable colour meets comfort and protection in this lip-lover's treat from Clinique.  Superbalm Moisturising Gloss in Black Honey looks deceptively black but tints your lips with a pretty berry stain.  Combining a moisture-rich gloss with all the Clinique treatment benefits found in the original Superbalm Tinted Lip Treatment, Superbalm Moisurising Gloss conditions, protects and rejuvenates lips while delivering color impact, lasting wear and an irresistible sheen.

This is probably my favourite product in the collection!  It's something so different from anything I have seen.

    The Lash Amplifying Mascara

    The Eyeliner Pencils

    Swatches in different lighting conditions:

    The Foundation Compact Cases

The Eyebrow Compact which I have showed before at the Anna Sui workshop

I will be doing a brow tutorial type entry with this palette soon!

Lastly, just want to mention the lovely place which we were invited to preview the Anna Sui makeup collection - somewhere I definitely want to go back again for some afternoon chill-lax!

Arteastiq is a tea lounge located at Meritus Mandarin Gallery, level 4.  The decor and menu range is really quite something, very intricate tea selection, arfully served.  :) I like.

    My choice of beverage!

That's all, and thanks for looking!

Anna Sui Makeup Workshop [Plus New Product Sneak Peak!]

    Hi!

Yesterday, I had the chance to attend the Anna Sui makeup workshop which is held at Tangs Vivocity.  It took place in a function room, near the handbags section, which I had never noticed existed.  The session lasted from 3 - 5pm, and participants get to learn about makeup application, try out a few makeup styles [Classy/ formal, Rock/ smokey and Cute] using Anna Sui products.

Towards the end of the workshop,  I was also treated to a sneak preview of a new Anna Sui product which will be released in August.  Stay tuned to the end of this entry for more pictures.

    The workshop program:

    • The makeup artist will demonstrate each step of the makeup process, from foundation to eyes, cheeks and lips -- on HALF of your face.  You get to pick up application, layering tips and also what type of products suit your skintone, your lifestyle and so on.
    • After each step of the makeup process, you get to try out on the other half your face, using your preferred colors.
    • The makeup artists will go around to help you, and also give pointers.
    • The workshop has a good balance of 'theory', demonstration and hands-on practice.  There is also plenty of chance for question and answer, due to the small number of participants allocated for each session.

Each table is filled with an array of Anna Sui base makeup, eyeshadows, brushes, removers, everything you need!

Overall, the workshop is great if you:

    • are rather new to makeup, and you want to learn to create some basic makeup styles
    • are always curious about Anna Sui makeup, the bright colors and want to learn how to work them/ make them more wearable
    • pick up some useful basic makeup tips [for example, why do we need to wear primers, how to line your eyes using liquid eyeliner, etc]
    • perhaps you are stuck in a makeup rut, and want to look for ways to spice up/ add variety to the usual makeup looks you wear daily

I attended the workshop as an observer, so I didn't do much of the hands-on practice.  I did, however, cleaned off half of my face to try on the liquid foundation and loose powder [which I am really liking].  I also spent the time during the hands-on to swatch lots of the eyeshadows on my hands, and also ahem, helped the lady next to me with her makeup application.

Here is a picture of the makeup demonstration.

I didn't want to go trigger happy with my camera, because it is such a cosy setting,

I was the only one taking pictures [other than another Anna Sui staff],

and I didn't want to scare the other participants by taking pictures of them.  :p

Trying out the application techniques...here she is filling in her brows after advice from the makeup artist on the correct brow shape.

There is also another MA on hand to assist the participants, here the MA is showing how to place the blush color to flatter your face shape.

some swatches of the eyeshadows that were lying on the table

Really love this shade of dark blue green [single eyeshadow]

You can view Chantana's blog entry for lots more Anna Sui eyeshadow swatches and the eye brightener too.

And some of the eyeshadow duos which come with a cream color, and a powder color,

which you can layer them together for a blended color, and also to allow the duochrome texture of the colors to show up.

One of the products that really stood out to me [besides the liquid foundation, and a powder brush] is this eye corrector.  At first, I thought it is a concealer, because it is in the same packaging and color as the concealers.  It is a eye brightener, which is originally designed to be a eyeshadow primer, but it is also evens out the color of your eyelids, and you can also use it to tone down an eyeshadow [like when you make a mistake and want to even out the color etc].  It is really multi-functional, and the texture works over bare skin and also on powdered skin.

I was in a rush after the workshop, so I didn't check out the Anna Sui counter.. but I think this retails for S$37.   I am kind of curious to try this out to compare with the NARS primer, UDPP and TFSI.

I hope you can see from the eyeshadow swatch test to see that eyeshadow swatched with the eye brightener underneath is more intense.

This is the product sneak preview...which is the Anna Sui eyebrow color compact. The packaging of these are just too cute, I was immediately drawn to the bow shaped compact [very sturdy plastic casing], which contains 2 powder colors.  One is the main eyebrow color, and the other is a striped color combination, for you to pick the color you need to accentuate and highlight your brows, making them look fuller and natural too.

Each compact comes with a dual ended application, one side is angled, and the other is a tiny brush for you to pick out the highlight colors.

No price information on these yet, but they come in 3 shades:

01 - the lightest, 'blonde'   02 - the reddish brown, 03 - the dark cool toned brown

I didn't swatch them on my hand, because the colors will and should only appear when applied on your brows.

The eyebrow color compact is part of the Anna Sui A/W collection, which is set to launch August.
