About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Lancôme x Alber Elbaz Collection: The Wide Eyes Look [Photos & Swatches]

    Hallo!

Here's a closer look at some of the pieces from the upcoming Lancôme x Alber Elbaz Collection which I have previously mentioned (click here for more information).  I will be posting a step by step LOTD entry sometime over this weekend.

The packaging for this collection is just really pretty, the illustrations are super fun very focused on the different eyelooks you can pull off.  The whole collection is loosely divided into 3 main looks, so in each look, you have the matching eyeshadow palette, single eyeshadow and a mascara.  There's also a set of falsies (a first for Lancome) released with this collection.

My top picks are the 'wide eye look' series - everything is printed with red and black hearts - and I really love this eyeshadow palette.

The colores are what I would wear easily (a slightly cooler toned neutrals which can take you from day to night).

    Product close ups:

    The beautiful palette -

It comes with magnetic applicators - which don't fall out even when you turn the palette upside down.

and another close up - the sparkles and sheen are just amazing.

Swatches - the eyeshadows are quite smooth and pigmented.

And the eyeshadow single - it is a pale irisdescent pink, which is great as a layering shade.

And the rest of the collection:

Do stay tuned for my review and LOTD with the products from this awesome collection!

    Happy Weekend!

    Thanks for looking!

Burberry Complete Eye Palette No 1 Smokey Grey [Photos & Swatches]

Hi everyone!!!  Happy 2013!  I hope the new year is getting off to a great start for everyone... sorry that I haven't posted in quite a few days... I wanted to start with a sort of 'new year' entry... but I didn't know where to start, and then work started, and I got to settle all that, and then... let's just plunge right back into the swing of (blogging) things with this beautiful Burberry quad which I recently got.  It is truly beautiful, and even more so as I used in a LOTD entry which is coming up right next!  In this entry, let's just admire the swatches, and the colors.

First off, these quads retail for $85 each, made in Italy... and  they are all permanent.  I think there is a total of 6 different quads.  I am glad to receive the Smokey Grey one, because it is something different from the usual browns and neutrals which I would reach for.

Here is a close up of the packaging.  The casing is the same quality at their singles, very sturdy smooth sleek dark metallic case.  The velvet case comes with slots for 3 little applicators, as shown in the picture below.  I like that they are kept separately, instead of jammed inside the quad, taking up 'pan' space.

And this is the beautiful quad, embossed in the iconic Burberry checkered design.

    A close up:

    Swatches:

    A matte soft black

    A matte warm grey

    A metallic grey

    A shimmery pearly white

The texture is extremely smooth on all these, and I love that though the palette is grey/ black it is not cool toned (nothing silvery) and it is surprisingly easy to work with.

I think there will be a quad (or two, or three) to suit everyone in their latest release of quads (and a clever idea too) seeing as each of their single eyeshadows retail for around $42, and this quad contains everything you need to create complete eyelooks for $85.  Definitely try these out, if you want to experience the amazing Burberry eyeshadows.

Do stay tuned for my detailed review and LOTD featuring this quad in an upcoming entry today!

LOTD: Summer Trend with DIOR Swimming Pool & Tangerine

    Hi!

This is a LOTD featuring the Dior Swimming Pool palette from their latest summer collection (available 1 may) --- click here, for detailed photos & swatches of the palette.

3 of the shades in the palette are very pale ones, so I know that only two shades can be used on my lids - which are the teal and the blue in the middle of the palette.  I will show you the color placement in a picture later on.

The overall eyelook is very light, and almost airy.  I used my regular lashes to add definition to the look, because I personally think that using these light colors on my eyes can tend to make them look smaller.  I only used a little bit of gel liner, applied and blended them in between my upper lashes.  I left the lower lashes totally bare.

I tried to keep the skin very flawless and smooth looking.    And then I lightly bronze the sides of my face, and give cheeks a pop of color.  Then I remember there is a tangerine/ orange looking lipgloss in the collection, so I decided to use my Shiseido lipstick.   Somehow the whole teal/ blue and orange combo seems to work, and make each other even more outstanding.

Ended up with a matchy lips and tee color + matchy nails and eye colors.  I personally feel it is quite cute, and it's colorful without being too loud.

For a expert demonstration of this pastel candy color makeup, click here to watch Lisa Eldridge's tutorial (where she also featured the same Dior palette, but didn't actually use it) link link link! She also shares tips on how to wear candy colors according to your skintone, and how not to look too washed out with pastels.

as you can see, from above the crease upwards, you can't really see the differences in the pale shades...

    all products used:

face - Lancome pro base, Lancome Teint Miracle liquid foundation, Lancome Teint Miracle loose powder

cheeks - Dior Nude Glow 001 Aurora (bronzer), Dior Healthy Glow 001 Petal (blush)

eyes - Laura Mercier flax (base), Shiseido Shimmering Cream eyeshadow BL215, Dior Swimming Pool palette

lips - Shiseido shimmering rouge OR316

liner - Bobbi Brown black caviar ink

nails - Dior 401 Saint Tropez

That's all, and thanks for looking!

Dior Summer 2012 Croisette Eyeshadow Palette 224 Swimming Pool [Photos & Swatches]

    Hi!

This entry features the Dior 5 Couleurs Croisette Edition, in the shade 224 Swimming Pool.   Yes, think that clear blue right smack in the middle of the palette is where the name comes from.  The palette is a beautiful combination of pastel summery shades, they are bright, but nothing garish.

At first glance, the pastel shades on the four corners of the palette might look flat, or your typical pastel eyeshadows.  But when I was swatching them, they all have some metallic sheen which adds more dimension and intensity to the innocent pastels.  The bright light blue in the middle is not a chalky matte either.  It is actually slightly ever so satiny.

The colors aren't terribly unique, and they aren't going to knock your socks off...Dior's Summer makeup collection is pretty huge (the eye glosses, the bronzers, the glosses, and there is another eyeshadow palette which is more neutral and golden brown)... so there is plenty to catch your attention, the colors of this palette may grab your attention first, but I think I am discovering a few other gems from this collection (both the nail polishes, and definitely one of the bronzers is calling out to me).

I would personally wear the four pastels very easily all over my lids (a proper LOTD entry is necessary to illustrate this, over the weekend I hope).  This palette would definitely appeal to those who are opting for a fresh summery look, bright eyes to set off the tanned skin, or to light up your eyes area.   For more definition, rim your eyes with a darker shade, and blend the pastels up to your brows for a illuminating look.

Dior eyeshadows are typically very smooth, finely milled and gives quite decent payoff, and this is no exception.  In my swatches, I used the spong tip applicator to swipe the color at the back of my hands, without any primer at all.

    Photos and swatches:

slight digression - swimming pool + Saint Tropez, France

ah, we should all be right here, right now...

Back to the palette - Swimming Pool

I swatched them in the same layout as the palette...

You can see the top left pink has a golden sheen, the top right greyish tone looks cooler toned when swatched

and the bottom left is a shimmery pale teal shade, while the bottom right is a nice shimmery bone color

the centre pop of blue has this slight satin finish that prevents it from look chalky or flat

here's how the palette looks like after swatched

The palette retails for S$95, and will launch island-wide from 1 May at all Dior counters.

I hope this has been helpful, and thank you for looking!

p.s Dior eyeshadow palette was given to me for consideration.

DIOR SS2012 Garden Party: 5 Colours Eyeshadow Palette Garden Roses [Photos, Review & Swatches]

    Hi hi

This entry will feature the Dior 5 Colours Eyeshadow Palette in 841 Garden Roses from their Spring 2012 Garden Party makeup collection.  I will be showing you swatches, close up pictures, and also a couple of LOTDs which I did using the palette.

For collection information - link here

For my review and swatches of the Waterlily scented nail polish - link here

The palette retails for S$95 and contains 4.8g of product.

The colors in this palette are all shimmery, and contain a mixture of pinks and purples.  There is a light pink shimmery shade, a super pale pink almost off white shade, a pale lilac shade, a pale frosty silvery grey shade, and in the centre, a medium cool toned purple shade with blue shimmer bits (that makes it look almost like a duochrome in the pan).  All shades are rather finely milled, and have a very smooth texture.  My fave shades in this palette must be the super pale  pink, and the light silvery shade.  I do wish there is a really dark shade in this palette though, which would make it a lot more versatile.  But I guess this being for spring, and all the flowers and garden inspiration, pastel shades are the focus for this palette.

I guess I don't even need to go into the intricate patterns on the palette, as you can see for yourself in the pictures, the embossed roses, lace designs that make this palette ultra feminine and no doubt a collector's piece.  When I was using this palette, I was careful not to swipe over the rose imprint, and used only the flatter lace areas.

Here are some close up pictures of the palette:

First LOTD -- where I applied the darkest purple shade in my crease, and the lighter colors around the rest of my eyes

Second LOTD - more my kind of look, where I did a gradient look, applying the darkest purple all over my lids, and then use the lighter colors to blend the colors up to my crease, I also used a purple sparkly liner to make the look a little more interesting.

I really NEED the falsies to bring out the whole eyelook!!!

    My thoughts/ impressions:

Overall, this is one palette I won't naturally reach for everyday, but it is not something which is so outrageous and vibrant that I have to think very hard about how to use it.  The colors are soft, and very feminine, and even if you just use a light wash of color all over your lids, it just give you a very natural look.  I would say it is a very safe purple/pink palette, and all the colors work together to complement one another. If you want the colords to be super duper strong and intense, I would recommend using a colored base to make the colors 'pop'.

But it is nice to go soft on the pigments for spring --- we don't need to have strong pow-wow colors on our eyes all the time, and with these pretty shades, it is more elegant to go subtle. The colors by themselves aren't terribly unique, but you are paying for a Dior palette, and this has all the qualities of a luxe beauty product - the packaging, the attention to detail, the quality of the eyeshadows themselves certainly makes buying this palette a more special experience.

I hope this has been helpful.  Thank you for looking.

p/s Dior palette was given to me for consideration.  All opinions are my own honest ones.
