About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

Haul: Cosme Decorte, Sigma brushes & Bourjois foundation!

On Saturday, I also received this beautiful Cosme Decorte brush in the KOSE package together with the tickets (CLICK HERE for more information on what tickets I am referring to).  The brush is huge, and the hair is super soft, and it just look sooooo pretty, I have to show it!  I haven't washed it, nor know how much it retails for.... but I know I would be loving this brush for dusting contour, or loose powder, it feels sooooo nice!

I also bought a Sigma F84 brush from Michelle's Sigma spree, and I have been curious to try out the Sigmax line which seems to be highly raved about.  I will be using this brush for cream and liquid products because it is so dense, and soft, I think it would be great for liquid foundations especially.

A comparison of both brushes side by side.

Incidentally both are angled, but you see how small the Sigma one is next to Cosme Decorte.  :)  I am loving loving both already!

I also bought a new foundation --- yesss someone stop me!!  I saw it, and I think, I could be wrong, maybe Lisa Elridge or the pixiwoo sisters use this?? I dunno, but the name of it and all just appeals to me. It is Bourjois Healthy Mix serum foundation.  I got mine in the lightest, or second lightest shade.  It is a gel type foundation, that promises 16 hours of radiance.  Well, i haven't used it yet, but will do a review or quick review when I use this in my upcoming LOTDs.  I will definitely be using it for my next weekly makeup.

The lighting doesn't really show if it matches my skin, but in natural light, it is pretty much matches my skintone.

And, well, I am tossing out one foundation -- finished it and loving it!!

    Lancome's Teint Miracle

Would I buy this??  YES!!   It is also one which I highly recommend to anyone looking for a new foundation.  In fact, I feel like buying it like now, just to keep having it in my rotation, because I really do love the finish and 'aura' of this foundation even though I like all my other foundations too.

That's all and thanks for looking!

Two Looks: Meeting for the First Time

    Hi hi

Just a quick entry on two looks which I thought I would personally wear if I am meeting someone (either for work, social, outing etc etc) for the first time.  I would like to look 'natural' yet a better more enhanced version of myself.  I don't want my makeup to attract the attention, but just want to play up certain features.  Was just tweeting with Amanda today (onsugar nick fiend - but where has she been on onsugar?) about meeting people, and our love for makeup, etc etc, how to strike that balance.... you know?  The most important to me would be a flawless yet natural complexion.  Then comes the brows -- though I know my brows now are as full and hairy as they get.  URGH.

For eye makeup, I am either ALL or nothing.  Because if I go all out and put on eyeshadow, I have to put on liner, lashes and so on, otherwise everything will just smudge.  I don't bother with mascara cos they just take too much time (and little results, because of my tiny lashes).  And I can't just have eyeshadows without the full works.  So yup, it's all or nothing.  And I think I have mastered the false lashes enough to know what suits me, and what would be quite natural. Remember to bring out the lash glue in case of any mishaps.

But for base makeup, I cannot compromise.  I feel most conscious about my spots, and besides, having a clean radiant complexion instantly draws light and youthful glow to yourself.   I would also go for something that I know will last and look through for the whole outing, because the last thing I want to worry about is my foundation fading.  I would only just blot my oily t-zone time to time, but not powder my face.

As for lips, I would prefer to go with something natural, if you are going for dinner, or going to be talking a lot, you won't want to be conscious whether a bright color you are wearing is fading, or smearing all over your lips, or whether you need to pop by the ladies to touch up or re-apply.  Even if you need to re-apply, you can just apply natural looking lipsticks on its own very quickly and discreetly (even without using a mirror).

With all these in mind, I have come up with two natural/ enhanced looks.

    Look ONE:

A slight smokey cool toned brown eyes that isn't too dramatic, yet makes eyes look bigger, and more captivating (I hope so!!).  I keep one color all over the lids and under the eyes, so any mistakes are less obvious, and also more natural looking.

Cheeks are kept very neutral, because of the colored eyes and lips.

    Products used:

Base: Cosme Decorte control essence, Chanel Mat Lumiere (mixed with Max Factor long lasting foundie), Laura Mercier loose powder, Amazing Cosmetics concealer, Clarins Instant Light Perfector brush for undereyes

Eyes: UPDD, UD Roach, Masquerade Palette (the matte brown shade for blending, and white bone shade for brow highlight), Loreal Superliner, Ardel #120 lashes, Maybelline Lash Stylist on lower lashes

    Lips: Cosme Decorte PK858 lipstick

For touching up or more glow, I also used Guerlain Pressed Meteorites powder.

    Look Two

This would be a very safe and classic look, in my opinion.  Pop of color on the cheeks, and very little on the eyes.  I just lightly contoured the eyes and cheeks with the same matte bronzer, and a very very fine black line to define the eyes.   Lips are also kept nude and natural to bring out the complexion.  For this you really want to use a very nice radiant finish foundation -- my choice here being the Lancome Teint Miracle.

In both sets of pictures, I think you can really see the differences in the overall finish of the foundation.  The Teint Miracle is indeed a lot more 'smoother', and really imparts that glowy aura!  Well, it could be also that the shade is really a lot more suited for my skintone than the combination/ mixture of shades of the two foundations.

    Products used:

Base: RMK Creamy Base, Lancome Teint Miracle, Dermablend Translucent loose powder, Amazing Cosmetics Concealer, Lancome Teint Miracle light perfecting pen/ brush for undereyes

    Cheeks: NARS Albatross, NARS Mounia

Contouring shade: MUFE Matte Bronzer #02

    Lips: Revlon Nude Attitude

And to give your eyes more definition without adding colors, throw on the lashes, or coats of voluminising mascara, and you will look very fresh, clean and almost doll-like.

I used the Ardel #120 as before.

So which is your fave look?  And if you have any tips for getting ready, do share them in the comments below!

That's all and thanks for looking.

LOTD: Glowy Skin, Wearable Bright Lips & Sky High Party!

    Hi hi,

I am really liking this combination of products for a perfect glowing radiant finish to my foundation!  A lethal combination, if I may add.

I was heading out yesterday evening to the live telecast and finale party of this season's Amazing Race Asia which was held at the Marina Bay Sands sky garden, 57 storeys up in the sky.  It was my first time going up there, and the views are breathtaking.  Shall make another excursion up there soon!

I decided to wear a brighter pop of color on my lips, since it's been quite a while since I wore any real color on my lips.

    Products used:

    Foundation:

Cosme Decorte Essence control base, Lancome Teint Miracle, Cosme Decorte Compact Powder, Guerlain Pressed Meteorites

    Lips:

Line and color lips with MUFE 18C Aqua pencil, YSL RV#30 Faubourg Peach, Chanel Rouge Allure Gloss in Genie

All very nice corally colors which aren't too bright.

    On my eyes:

NARS Primer, NARS Rajasthan (used the brown all over lids, and the peacock green to darken outer corners), MAC Lord It Up, Ardel 120 lashes.

I left the lower eyes completely bare.

    Cheeks:

    Illamasqua Rumour and Tweak

Love my lighting (indoors facing open window), really shows off the glow and radiance here.

    At the party itself.

Lots of finger food served, and lots of booze of course.

But I limited myself to just one REAL drink, in anticipation of my driving test this morning, which I PASSED!!!  Wooots!!!

Thanks to everyone who wished me, and congratulated me!

The winning team from The Phillipines (they look hawt).

We left shortly after the winners were announced, and left to do some quick shopping before heading home.  Here is a quick sneak peak of what I bought....I will do the full haul entry after this weekend.  I got them gift-wrapped just for fun, even though they are all for myself.

That's all, and I am in the best mood in a long long while!  I passed driving and all my cronies are amazing! I am going mega partying, I am shopping!  Yup, as Sara says, Life is Good! :)

    Thanks for looking!

LOTD: If I have 5 Minutes to Get Ready (Feat. Cosme Decorte Base Makeup)

Hi hi, this will be an entry featuring a couple of products I received, just as I was getting ready to leave the house for my driving lesson, so I thought, ok, why not incorporate them into my makeup routine, and take some pictures along the way.  It was only after I came back that I read the product information and all that details.  And because I was in a little of a rush, I shall just call this my 5 minutes look, no brows, no eyemakeup, heck, I didn't even use concealer, because my spots have been clearing up, and the foundation alone is able to cover most blemishes.

I will be showing you how I applied both products, and my intial thoughts on each of them, followed by detailed product information.

    COSME DECORTE AQ
    Compact Powder N
    In 2 shades <Refills in 2 shades> S$153

I used this as a setting powder to my foundation, and in keeping with the same brand, I used Cosme Decorte Essence control base which I purchased during the KOSE sale, and also the Cosme Decorte cream foundation which I received a while back.

Instead of the puff which comes with the compact, I used a MAC powder brush to dust the powder on my face.  The shade I am using is 001, and it has a translucent finish, making my face look fairer than usual.   This is definitely more suitable for fair-skinned ladies if you don't want to end up looking ashy.  The powder is also very finely milled and pressed, and adds a soft radiant finish to my face.

In the half-faced experiment shown below, you can see the difference before and after using the powder.  My face looks a little fairer, smoother and fresh.  And I must say, it stayed this way throughout the hot afternoon, and despite sitting in a air-conditioned car for a few hours, my face didn't feel tight nor turn oily -- am very impressed with the 'feel' of this powder.  I have used and tried my fair share of powders, and this is definitely one of the better ones I have used.

And a closer look of the oveall skin texture after I powdered the whole face.

It didn't feel heavy powdery at all despite the fact that I was rather heavy handed in the application.

Next, is a powder blush from Esprique.

    ESPRIQUE PRECIOUS Gradation Layer Cheeks
    Refill Colour :$35 Case: $15

I tried swatching each of these shades, but they didn't turn out too well on my hands, so I shall show a face application instead.

The casing is very girly with the crystal-shaped embossing details on the cover.

You need to use a smaller brush (or the one that comes inside the compact) to reach each of the colors in the palette.  There is something for everyone.  A pale gold highlighting shade, a soft shimmery coral shade, a slightly glittery light pink shade, and finally a darker plum shimmery shade (reminds me of NARS Sin with bigger gold shimmer bits).

Even though my brush didn't seem to pick up much powder, the color payoff is pretty decent.  It is buildable, which means you can pick up more product if you want a more obvious pop of color on your cheeks.  I also used the lightest highlight shade at the top of my cheeks and you can see just right there, a spot of glowiness going on.  I like how it gives my naturally rosey cheeks a natural touch of colour.  Nothing very pow-wow, but totally great if you want to freshen up the color on your cheeks.

And one more close up shot of the overall cheeks and face look -- I didn't fill in my brows, no concealer, and just some lipstick.  Very fresh, and if I may add, young, and clean.  After all, I am just heading out for my driving lesson, lunch and perhaps some random roaming about and back home.

    Product information:

    COSME DECORTE AQ
    Compact Powder N
    In 2 shades <Refills in 2 shades> S$153

    Why is it $153?

    Use of active ingredients:

    • Birch Water (moisturizes) • Chimaphila Umbellate Leaf Extract (moisturizes)
    • DLF [Rice bran extract] (moisturizes) • Vitamin B6 Derivative (moisturizes)
    • Dipotassium Glycyrrhizinate (moisturizes) • White Lily Extract (moisturizes)
    • Poria Cocos Extract (moisturizes) • Rose Hip Oil (emollient) • Safflower Oil (emollient)

    Use of innovation and technology:

New material Sculpturing Powder is very light but the texture of the powder is moist. Although they are super-fine particles, each particle has the structure to bond each other, which realized the miraculous powder, i.e., pressed but soft.

It contains luxe ingredient --- the Gold Colloid powder

The super fine Gold Colloid Powder particles flexibly stay on the skin and softly reflect the light to help skin appear clear and beautifully contoured. Gold Colloid Powder is contained in all the AQ products. This powder reflects the light in different colors such as purple and gold according to the angle and therefore skin looks as if dressed in a noble aura. The resonance of the two kinds of wonderful powders helps your skin stay perfectly clear, sharp and noble.

    My thoughts:

It is really quite an indulgent product, for the price, and it is a 10g powder, much more expensive than my La Mer powder.  That said, I have been getting very curious and interested to try out all these luxe and niche makeup products (my byTerry lemming, for eg) and while I am not too sure I will purchase this on my own, I will be using it for a longer period, and let you know how I feel about it after some more time.  And if there is anything I want from Cosme Decorte, would be their loose powder (abt $183 for 30g), I have tried it during the makeup workshop, and I am considering getting it for myself soon.  I am on a loose powder kick lately.

    Product information:

    ESPRIQUE PRECIOUS Gradation Layer Cheeks
    Refill Colour :$35 Case: $15

This blush palette promises to help you create the illusion of a smaller prettier face, using the double application method (which you can see in the pictures below)

    01 Coral Red

That's all, and I hope you find this entry helpful!

    Thanks for looking!

ps Cosme Decorte and Esprique products were given to me for consideration.  All opinions expressed here are my own honest ones.

Review: Lancôme La Base Pro Perfecting Makeup Primer PLUS Updated Face Routine

Ok, this is going to be a long rambling entry! and I haven't done something like this in ages.

I will be covering these 2 main  points:

    1. Review of Lancôme Perfecting Makeup Primer
    2. Updated FACE Routine  which includes some face products which I have been loving lately

This will be a review of the Lancôme Perfecting Makeup Primer.   I bought this at S$68 (25ml), available at all Lancôme counters.

The formula of this product is oil-free, and completely colourless, which suits all skintones and especially if you have oily/ combination skin. What made me buy this product is because I had swatched it at the counter and I like the results at the back of my hand.  Why do I say that:?  This is because the primer comes out like a silicon type consistency, which I usually avoid because these break me out.  However, when I rubbed some liquid foundation over the swatch at the back of my hand, I was really impressed by how nicely and smoothly the foundation went over the primed area of my hand. There were no streaking, no slipping around of the foundation.  Both products settled into a very flawless finish.  And since I was in the market for a primer, I bought it that day.  I have been using it for around 3 weeks or so, almost everyday, everytime I put on makeup.

Some product information, if you are interested:

Give your complexion a beautiful air-brushed look with Lancôme's amazing, oil-free makeup base. Inspired by makeup artists, the La Base Pro Perfecting Makeup Primer creates a smooth, radiant and long-lasting canvas for a more perfected makeup look. Great for all skin types, the mattifying formula feels comfortable on your skin and helps control shine.

Lancôme La Base Pro Perfecting Makeup Primer Features:

    • Exclusive Lancôme Elasto-Smooth™ technology forms a silk-like network on skin to create a soft-focus effect, like a filter on a camera lens.
    • Temporarily refines skin's texture and diffuses light to visibly reduce the look of imperfections.
    • Contains silicons and emollients that create an even canvas for foundation.
    • Makeup glides on seamlessly.
    • Color stays true and vibrant for a radiant, air-brushed look all day.
    • Skin looks and feels satin-soft; never greasy.

    Information taken from here.

How do I use this product?

We always start with clean skin!  In this close up shot, you can see little freckle spots, dark undereyes (I slept less than 10 hours in the last 2 days), redness around the nose, and BIG PORES! The latter I am counting on my Clarisonic to clear out and improve the appearance.  So you see, we need help in making my problematic skin look flawless, even though it really is not.

I usually use 2.5 pumps of product, and I use it mainly around T-zone, cheeks and a lot lesser towards the outer part of the face which is relatively smoother and no enlarged pores, no oiliness there.

I don't know if you can tell in the following picture, but you can see that as the product goes over the skin,  you can see it soothes over the pores (but you can still see the 'dots' because the product is transparent).  You can feel a fine layer of film-like texture over your skin.  I usually wait a few minutes before applying my liquid foundation after this step.

Here you can get a better look, after I have applied and blended the primer.

Here, I am using the LancômeTeint Miracle foundation in the shade B-02.  It looks very yellow in the picture, but it works out fine because the yellow beige tone serves to neutralise the pink/ redness of my skin.  Foundation review here.

The most striking thing is the EASE of application and blending of the foundation. Amazing!  And I think I tend to use lesser product too.  Usually I wait somemore (do my eyemakeup, brows etc) before I set my face with loose powder.  This waiting time is crucial, because you want the products to settle in nicely in your skin.  Here, I used Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder.

    Overall thoughts on the primer:

    • Helps foundation goes on easily and smoothly.
    • Gives a refined flawless finish.
    • Did not break me out.
    • Oil control effect is not apparent.  I still need to blot (either with tissue paper or blotting sheets) after 4--5 hours.
    • Helps foundation wear longer and FRESHER throughout the day (despite the blotting).
    • Fragrance-free for sensitive noses.  Hehehe..

    I highly recommend this primer!

Updated FACE ROUTINE: By this, I mean what else I throw on the face, if I am just going to work for the day.  What I wear on my cheeks, my brows, etc etc

I have been loving one blush lately, wore it almost everyday the past week, and that's saying a lot... because at last count... I have enough blushes in my stash to last me two whole months without repeating a single one. *shamefaced*

So after my foundation routine as shown above, I move on to my cheeks.  I am liking the Cosme Decorte Modeling Nuance 001 to highlight my cheeks, to impart a natural looking glow/ highlight.  It is a matte white cream, very dry cream which I can use even though I have already powdered my face.  Reminds me kind of like the texture of my NARS cream blush.

It looks scary white here, but OK after blending out!

After you apply blush, it will look even more natural.  I used my Illamasqua Tremble (powder blush), and the color looks super washed out in the picture below.  It is a brighter (but still pale) warm tone matte pink shade.

I use my MAC 116 brush to apply blush most of the time.

I dabbed on some lipstick (Maquillage RS518) and we are good to go!

*ignore how tired my eyes look*

And we are done, and this is with minimal/ no concealer at all. Nothing under my eyes, and nothing on my lids.

I like to show how the foundation looks like after one hour, when it has properly set.

I just colored my hair deep blue black on Sunday.  Hello to glossy hair!  :)

Speaking of Lancôme, I recently got copies of the pictures they took during the press event, and also you can find a video clip of several other users/ bloggers and myself talking about the Teint Miracle at the Lancôme 75th Anniversary website (click here) and their FB page.

I have to say, the post-production crew definitely did a good job of making me not look so blah, cos I was barefaced that day except for the foundation on my skin.

That's all, and hope you enjoyed this rambly epic entry.  If you have any questions about any product mentioned here, do leave your comments below!
