About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Urban Decay Flushed Palette [Photos & Swatches]

    Hi hi!

The weekly spam is back... it is becoming impossible to update the blog during the week these days, and even during the weekend, I am not home most of the time!  I finally got some time yesterday morning to take pictures of some new goodies, and will quickly post the pictures and swatches up first, and I can start using them...and I shall plan some LOTDs revolving these goodies soon, I promise!

First, we have the Urban Decay Flushed palette - I think it retails for S$46 at Sephora stores...and when I swatched it, I knew I wanted it.  All 3 shades suit my skintone very well.  And I like cheek palettes like this... very easy to use, great for travelling.  I like that the bronzer shade is not too dark (which means it only suits light complexions actually) and I can use it all over the outline of my face to add some warmth and shading.

The highlight shade is a pinky tone one that adds the right touch of radiance to my skin.  I have used this palette over two days, and I really like the glowy effect it gives.
The blush itself is quite pigmented, a rosy pink shade.   It has very very subtle shimmer, but otherwise it looks mostly matte.
All three shades are very smooth, and go onto the face beautifully.  I highly recommend!

I just use the same brush to apply all 3 products cos I am lazy and fuss free that way.  But if I want a really finished look, I would probably (and should) use a separate smaller brush to apply the highlight shade.

The size of this palette is slightly bigger than the Basics palette, and it doesn't have that rubbery texture of the Basics palette.  The palette also comes with a large enough mirror for me to do my makeup up close.

    Close ups & swatches:

Have you gotten the Urban Decay Flushed palette yet?

    Thanks for looking!

Urban Decay x Sephora Event with Naked Basics

    Hi hi!

A couple of weeks ago (3 Feb 2013), I had the chance to take part in a bloggers makeup demonstration featuring the URBAN DECAY Naked Palettes.  I was there together with Joey and Mag.  It was a fun event, quite relaxed as we got to bring along our own model friends to do the demonstration.  I brought along my sister - Beverley, and re-created her everyday look using the NAKED 1 palette, while Joey did a soft smokey look on her friend, and Mag did a more dramatic smokey look on her friend.

I had done makeup on other friends and relatives for random dinners and events before, but it was my first time doing makeup on someone else so openly, so naturally I was a little nervous... though having my own sis as my model makes it easier, and doing the demo together with Joey and Mag couldn't have been better.  And fortunately I am already quite familiar with Urban Decay products, so it was easy for me to plan what to use on my sister.

Many thanks to anyone who actually made their way to the event, and especially to my girlfriends who went to support us, took lots of pictures, Amy, Jerlaine and Claudia, plus my cousin etc etc...   Thank you Thank you!

Just want to share with you the pictures from the event, courtesy of Amy & Jerlaine who took most of the pictures, and also thanks to Joey for sending us the pictures from her camera.

A quick OOTD pic I posted on instagram before the start of the event:

Wore a black skull top from Zara, black pants from GAP, YSL Arty, T&Co. necklace, I am wearing Laura Mercier Lavender Cloud on my nails.

My sister prior to the start of the event.  Setting up the little counter, and picking out the items which I would be using.   It was a little nerve wrecking. Hehe.  She had already done her base and brows at home.

A quick Q&A before the start of the demonstration.  I just realised what a lot of hand movements I tend to make as I am talking.  :o

During the demonstration, and all of us hard at work!   I kind of wanted to finish up as soon as I could.  Heheh.

I used Urban Decay F-Bomb saturated lip pencil on her lips.  I probably applied 2 layers, blotting in between each layer.

And a group shot post event:

and some pictures which were snapped by Jerlaine using our iphones:

and a collage of the photos we got taken at the post event 'photobooth'.

all in all, it was quite a fun experience, and thanks to Sephora and Urban Decay Singapore for organising the event!

I also received a goodie bag for being part of the event, shall share with you all soon!

    Thanks for reading!

LOTD: Urban Decay NAKED Basics Palette

    Hi!

I did a look with the Urban Decay Naked Basics palette today - if you are a matte shadows lover, you need this palette!   I went for a soft smokey look, with a pop of color on the lower lids.  Love the end results.  The matte browns are very outstanding, though I wish the lighter shades have more variety, cos I can imagine how they might not really show up on some skintones..

The formula and consistency of these shadows are impressive.  They adhere to the eyelids very well, and the minor fallout I experienced isn't much of a problem in my application.

I did use a primer to help the colors stay on better, and true to color, as I always do with all my eyeshadows.

    Swatches in this entry here.

    Colors used:

    1. I applied on the brow bone - Venus - to softly highlight the area, using a fluffy brush.  The color went on smoothly and I like the satin finish.

    2. I applied the crease color next - using NAKED 2 - this gives the eyes some definition before I apply my lid color.  I really like this color, it is kind of like MAC Omega & Wedge that sort of matte blending colors - I used a larger fluffy brush for this step.

    3. On the lids, I used Faint - it is a very rich brown darker than it looks in the pan after I applied on the lids.  There was some fallout with this color, but I dusted off the fallout with a face brush.  I layered it on to intensify the color.

    4. I used a gel liner to define my eyes.  And then set it with Crave, a super jet matte black.  This step is optional, but I just wanted to try out the color.

    5. I tight lined my lower lids with Urban Decay 24/7 glide on shadow in the color Rehab, and further down my lower lids, I used a teal metallic liner to give the look an 'interesting' touch.   Teal liners seem to be really in this Spring, apart from all the girly pinks.

    More pictures:

    and a crazy face hahaha!

    All products used:

Face - cle de peau beaute Brightening Enhancing Base (out in March), Urban Decay Naked Foundation, set with Diorsnow fresh reveal color correcting powder

Concealer - cle de peau beaute concealer

Cheeks - Shiseido bronzer 02, Tarte Amazonian clay blush Fantastic

Eyes - NARS primer, Urban Decay NAKED Basics palette (colors as stated above)

Liners - Bobbi Brown gel liner Black Ink, Makeup Store Ocean Breeze (out in March), Urban Decay 24/7 glide on shadow pencil Rehab

    Lashes - Shu Uemura farfarlina

Lips - Chanel Glossimer Sweet Beige

Urban Decay NAKED Basics Palette [Photos & Swatches]

    Hi hi

this entry features the latest in Urban Decay's NAKED installment - the BASICS palette.  It contains 6 shades, 5 of them matte and 1 has a satin finish.

The palette retails for S$45 and is currently available at all Sehora stores.  If you purchase this palette tomorrow you get to enjoy this special promotion (click here for more information)

    It contains

Venus - off white with satin finish

Foxy - milky warm off white matte

WOS - milky creamy slightly pink off white matte

NAKED 2 - creamy light brown matte

Faint - creamy medium brown matte

    Crave - jet black matte

I find that this palette fills the gap between both the NAKED palettes - the matte gap.  If you have all three, I think you are pretty set for life in terms of neutral eyeshadows in various finishes.

Size comparison to the other NAKED palettes:

Swatches - swiped heavily with my fingers, no base.

The formula is amazingly smooth and creamy.  Needless to say, they are all extremely pigmented.  There are some loose powder bits flying about as I swatched them, but I used the palette in a LOTD entry, and there wasn't much fallout, fortunately.

This is a seriously good matte palette - superb for blending out colors, contouring and so on.  I will be using it in an LOTD entry coming up soon.

    another swatch picture:

Hope these swatches are helpful, and thanks for looking!
