About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

NARS Tokaido Express Nail Polish [Swatches & Comparisons]

    Hi hi!

    I love this nail polish!

Tokaido Express is a deep plummy purple with some multicolor and golden shimmer bits.  NARS polishes retail for S$30 each.  I wish they brought in a wider color range though.  I saw a much wider range of polishes overseas....and well.  Maybe more shades will come in soon enough.

I had thought that it might be too similar to another NARS purple polish I own.. and they are totally different.  Comparisons below!

I like the formula on this one.  I had applied 3 thin coats to give the full color payoff.  It is very smooth, and as you can see, very glossy too.  And the shimmer bits show up just as nicely on the nail as they appear in the bottle... which is a huge plus.   I think such warm plum purple shades are quite unique (in my collection anyway), because most purples you see are the royal cooler toned purples... so this one with a red/pink toned purple is something different.

Love how the shimmer bits add a certain dimension to the color too.

    Swatches here:

And the comparison - and everyone needs to own Purple Rain.  It is a brilliant shade of purple which contains multicolor shimmer bits (you can see the red, gold, blue and purple bits in the bottle), and it reminds me of some jewel or crystal.   Two coats give full color payoff.

    And the swatches:

You can see that Tokaido Express looks almost a little brownish next to the blue-toned Purple Rain (and yet Purple Rain looks a little red too!).

Bottomline - if you love purples and/or can't get enough of purple polishes, I think you will love both shades featured here!

Hope these swatches have been helpful, and thanks for reading!

p.s  pictures here taken with iphone5 - it seems to be the best way to capture the true colors given my artificial daylight lamp.  Simply amazing.

NARS Purple Rain Nail Polish [Swatches & Comparisons]

I purchased NARS Purple Rain in TW, and it is a gorgeous metallic rich purple, that leans slightly warmer, but yet not a plum shade.  You will see that, in the comparison pictures, I can't seem to get enough of this type of color.

The consistency on this polish is awesome, it is almost a one-coater (like most of my NARS polishes, actually) and it is super smooth.  The multi-color shimmer is quite visible, even in the shade.  This color is very flattering on my skintone, and I love this both on my fingers and toes.

I seem to be posting nothing but nail polish entries lately....and I have plenty of makeup stuff to showcase, but at the moment, I am in the mood to play around with my new colors.  I haven't been wearing makeup very often lately, and so photo opportunities are harder to come by.  But we will get them up soon!

Here you can see the shimmers bits...it's gorgeous.

    comparisons

it is very very close to Illamasqua Baptiste (which is just a tiny bit cooler in toned) I would say they are 95% match!

That's all, and hope this is useful!

    Thank you for reading!
