About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

No ads, no paid links etc please.  I am in charge of all content and pictures here.

    LUSH Heaven [Bubble Bars]

I like to soak in the hotel tubs when I am on vacay, and I am totally going to do this when I get to Vegas later in the week, the hotel we are staying at is HUGE...and I would be spending some time just enjoying the luxurious room.  So what better way to enhance the experience by using these LUSH bubble bars?  I don't haul any LUSH products anymore, because they are hard to get in SG [come on, the Holland V shop is way over-priced] and so to enjoy and use them on a regular basis just isn't very sustainable.

However, I make exception for these bubble bars.

Let's check out some covet pictures I took in the LUSH store this morning:

the store on Powell St is huge, and airy....so the LUSH scent wasn't suffocating unlike some of the ones I been to in HK and Japan.

I couldn't help but be drawn to the colorful slabs of bubble bars in the centre of the store.

I bought 4 bars of the lovelies!

    Dorothy [vegan]

Orange Blossom wishes for spring, somewhere over the rainbow

orange blossom and ylang ylang scented bubbles and bright blue waters

    Sunny Side [vegan]

Bathe in sunny bubbles and be revitalized

It is nearly impossible to emerge from this golden glitterfest wearing a frown, because it is made with heaps of fresh tangerine and lemon oils to brighten your mood.

    Honey Bee

    Sweet Honey Soother

Sweetened with honey for soft, soothed skin and aloe for tender care; we've also blended in Rhassoul mud for its deep cleansing properties.

I have used this a couple of items, and love the honey scent and moisturising after effect.

    The Comforter [vegan]

Cozy blackcurrant embrace for deary days.

*this is Rockstar in a bubble bar

Take a deep breath, crumble our blackcurrant and cypress bar, and sink into the massive pink bubbles for a warm, encompassing hug.

Can't wait to pop them in my bath from Thursday onwards!

That's all, and thanks for looking!

    Haul: All Thanks to You!

This is going to be a super picture heavy entry, because everything I got today is just all sooooo happy, and sparkling, and shimmering, I just went overboard with the photo-taking!

And I shall not be water-marking my pictures anymore!  It is a little troublesome to do so, and in all honesty, at the end of the day, the watermark is an eyesore IMO.  I didn't watermark my pictures til someone long time back told me that my pics were 'stolen' in some other website...and anyway, I just want the pictures and the products to show, without bombarding them with watermark (though I always try to be as discreet as possible).  Back in the days when I just started how to photoshop, I was so happy that I could 'stamp' all my pictures with text and etc...but now...I think I just want to insert text into my pics only when necessary, and I always try to take my pics in the truest color and appearance, so I don't have to adjust the color settings in PS.  If my pictures are 'stolen', well, I shall take that as a compliment!  LOL  and I guess people can eventually tell, if your pictures are not your own.

So everything you see in this haul entry, I didn't even buy them in person, except for one item.   I will go through each one and tell you the 'story' behind them as we go along.

From Hong Kong, when Kim went over in Dec, she helped me CP 2 items, the LUSH Snow Fairy shower gel for hair and body.   This is a Christmas LE product, and I used it last year too... it smells like cough syrup...and contains sparkles bits!

And next item Kim helped me with, is a NARS eyeshadow duo, in this color:

Looks like nothing in the pans...but when swatched/ applied....

... you get pigmented pinky and golden sheen!!  I like that it's a sheen, and nothing metallic nor too shimmery.

    LOVES!

Next, Jerlaine was super nice and sweet to offer to give me a lamp, which I can clamp to my window (or anywhere, actually) when I mentioned that I needed some lighting for my new set-up!  So, big thanks to Jerlaine!  She even included 2 light bulbs inside so I can set it up immediately when I got home!

Next, Amy also gifted me with this Everyday Minerals loose powder, which she says is very  very finely milled, and kept her face quite shine-free.  I like that it is compact enough and has a 'cap' thing which you can cover over the sifter holes, to prevent a powdery mess.  So, thanks Amy!  I shall use this for my next weekly makeup tray!!  :)

And then, from the new MAC collections.. Kas helped me got a nail polish, Soiree -- which I knew I wanted when I saw on Temptalia.    Thanks, Kas, and also for the Toggi chocolate!

and let's have some shatter fun!

And from the same MAC collection, this is the only item I picked up in person today...which isn't a very typical item for me to get, but the name, and the happy glitter bits kind of lured me in...which is the Sin-Tillation lip gelee. It's full of tiny pink and light blue glitter bits... think some silvery ones too, in a very pale pinky base.

And lastly, this is the last item which I order from Gwen's beauty.com spree, I have featured the other items before in a previous haul entry, but this is the last item I received.  Thanks Gwen!!

This is the Smashbox Eyewish Palette... again, when I saw it on Temptalia, I wanted it.. the eyeshadows are all super pretty, many wearable eyes, plus great bright colours too, and there is also a mini eyeshadow base and mascara inside too.  This is US45, compared to SG$129 or something like that.  Definitely great savings!  Ok this is the part when I got carried away with the pictures!  Enjoy!

Yup, spent a good part today meeting up the other onsugarettes, including Amy, Chantana, Kas, Kim, Jane (Kim's gf), Joanna, Rusty, Fatin, Imma, Jennifer, Priscilla, Jerlaine, Charlene, and also Jasmine who joined us briefly during her break.  And also bumped into Farah too!  It's always fun to meet up everyone and catch up the goss and chat!

That's all for this epic entry, and thanks for looking!

Raves: Stuff I am loving!! (Mini Reviews)

    Hi hi!

This is kind of a random entry, not exactly a montly favourites, nor a full-blown review, but just want to rave about some stuff which I have been using and liking.  I might have mentioned them in faves entries before, or you seen them in haul entries and countless LOTDs entries... but well, this entry is kind of devoted to some of the stuff which I gotten, but never really talked about since then.

    1.   Let's start with non-makeup.  Which is a coffee-table book titled Sex and the City (The Stories, The Fashion, The Adventure). Basically this is a behind the scenes look at the making of the movie, the clothes and outfit breakdown.  They also show the sets, furniture, and decor stuff, like where to find them, and all that information.   It is a nice hard cover book, and I paid about $33 for them. I personally enjoyed the entire TV series better than the movies, but you can't deny that both movies are entertaining and easy to watch.

Three of my most fave outfits in the movie.

    2.  Estee Lauder Hydra Complete Multi-Level Moisture Eye Gel Cream. I have 2 sample tubs of these which can last me forever.  It is a light weight eye cream, which I think I should start using long ago for my aging skin.  LOL!  So far, so good.

    3. SANA Pore Putty Makeup Base (about $19.90 at Watsons, John Little, Sasa) I prefer to use non-silica products, and this is a creamy base which evens out my skin and creates a smooth base for foundation application.  I feel naked if I put on my foundation without some primer, and so far this is working out very well for me.  It does not contain shimmer, and does not break me out.   Highly recommend this for a value for money face primer.

    4. MUFE Concealer Palette No1 ($59 at Sephora and MUFE store) You can see in the pictures I have used all the skin color shades pretty much evenly.... I just dabbed and mixed the shades to cover my undereyes, and also for areas which I need more coverage. I am trying to cut down on the amount of foundation I pile on my face, and so using a good concealer is important.  This is creamy and blends well, and covers spots and undereyes very well.  I would compare this to my MAC Studio Sculpt and MAC  Studio Finish in terms of coverage and finish.

    5. NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base I used this while in Hong Kong and they make my smokey dark eyeshadows LAST THE WHOLE DAY.  No smudging, no fading nothing!!  Very impressed by this colorless base.. it is not 'lightening' like TFSI and UDPP, and feels like nothing when you put it on.  I love this eyeshadow primer.  I still have brand new tubes of TFSI and UDPP.... but not going to open those til I use up my NARS primer.

    6. NARS Eyeshadow in Lola Lola.  This has a very smooth texture, and great all over the lids color.  If I reach for my NARS eyeshadows, I always get this one first.  Followed by Nepal.

    7. MAC 222 eyeshadow brush. I hardly ever use this brush.   Til recently, when my other fluffy brushes were kind of dirty, and I decided that I should give it a go... and I like it.  The longer hairs and slightly smaller tips makes for precise application, while still fluffy enough to blend.

    8. MUFE Aqua Creams. I have heard mixed reviews, but they work out amazing for me.  Makes any eyeshadow last the whole day without fading.  I would use it on its own.  You need to work quickly with this product to prevent it from drying and setting on your lids.  Other than that, I highly recommend them --- well, at least in the colors I got.   #14 and #15

    9. Darkness Eyelash glue (available at Sasa, John Little).  Unlike most lash glues that come in a tube, this has a brush applicator that is like a liquid liner brush.  I think some people say you can apply the glue like a liquid liner onto your lids and then fix your false lash onto the line you drawn. I am not sure about that, and I would never do that, because what if the glue gets in my eyes.  Instead I use the brush applicator to paint the glue onto my lash instead, and then fix onto my eyes.  It sticks very well and lasts the whole day.

    10. LUSH Sugar Lip Scrub and Korres Lip Butter. I would say this is my lip treatment combo.  I never really bothered with lip treatments before, and the Korres Lip Butters kind of changed that.  It really does get rid of dryness on my lips, and make them soft and smooth for lipstick application.  I tried out the lip scrub yesterday, it is really literally just flavour sugar bits which you rub onto your lips to scrub off dead skin.  Then after rinsing my lips (sugar=melting=stickiness=atttract ants? hence the rinsing----- though I did lick them off somewhat).  The sugar lipscrub has a minty sensation, and the sugar bits aren't too abrasive.  I am wondering, can I DIY these lip scrubs?  Which would make these sugar lipscrubs very over priced as sugar??? Yup... anyway, they are fun for novelty's sake.

    11. YSL RV 30 Peach Faubourg. This is my fave coral peachy lipstick.  I don't have to mix it with other colors or anything, because the texture and color is just perfect the way it is.  And it is a YSL RV... which is soooooooooo fab to apply and smells lovely too!

Yup... I hope this has been helpful.  Thanks for reading!

Haul! LUSH, Randoms and Vacation Pictures

Ok, this is prolly the last haul related entry.  :p

Just some LUSH items.... I didn't get any soap--- or maybe I got, some Porridge. Might give it away... so yup.  I didn't get any other soap, cos well, they smell good and all that, but each bar of S$20+ soap will only last like one week!

I much prefer the shower smoothie, and so I went all out and got the Yummy3 in the largest container, which is 500ml.  It is more value for money anyway.  I also got a little Butterball, which I used in the hotel bathtub.  I also got the rockstar bubble ball or bath, watever, didn't get to using it, so shall leave it as drawer fragrance for now.

I also got not one, but two tubs of BIG shampoo.  I am sure you must have read reviews on this item... it is a super clarifying shampoo, and I love such clear, 'stripping' shampoo cos they make my hair feels really clean, and adds volume too. Plus it smells awesome!!  Loves how smooth it lathers up.  If you have the chance, grab yourself some Big shampoo.  I like it so much the first time I used it when I bought it, I went back  the next day to get a second bottle.  I was also given a small tub of shower jelly to try, but I am not a super big fan of shower jelly (they do smell amazing and lather up real good)... so I gave it away too.

One last item which was quite hard to find is the lip scrub because they seem to be sold out everywhere.  The only flavour they have left is this funky one called chocolate and mint... which is ok for me.. but I was really hoping to get a fruity flavoured one, as these lip scrubs contain sugar bits which you can just lick off your lips after scrubbing them.  Haven't tried it out yet though.

These are a bunch of nail polish which I got in Bonjour, and I am giving or have given away 90% of these polish.

Also got myself a new pair of running shoes, cos you need to change your running shoes every 1-2 years.. and I do wear out mine quite well, so I need a pair of brightly hued ones.  My faves.  Haha.  My old pair is a POW in your face bright yellow.. and well, this pair of Adidas is like my Chanel Genial lipstick, no??  It is a adipro series, so they are super ultra light, and I like the mesh covering of the shoe---and all my running shoes are  in simiilar style.  I also picked up a pair of hmm.............. I guess they are underwear at Adidas.  They can't be running shorts, right??

And lastly, just a random mix-mash of photo-collage of pictures I snapped when I was in HK.  Enjoy!

    Beauty Stores

    Blinged out Merces at Elements

(an upmarket huge mall located at the Kowloon Airport Express station)

Our food, when in Hong Kong, you just 'yum cha', eat dim sum...and we also ate at all the little dingy places, which are so cheap, and so well, authentic----whatever that really means.

I think I am super done with MU hauling, kinda enough of NARS in a long long time to come, illamasqua too.... After buying Mac Stereo Rose when it release, I am, and I should be stopping (keeps my fingers crossed!!) the MU hauling.  I love to travel, and I hope I can plan for a bigger vacation year end.

That's all, and thanks for reading!

Haul: My Red House & random LUSH samples

So I mentioned in the previous LOTD entry, that a few of us went to check out My Red House cosmetics, which you can purchase online too.

It was such a lovely experience trying out makeup in a nice relaxed setting, so Joey, if you ever found a suitable retail space, make sure you bring along the cosy relaxing atmosphere too! :)

We went swatch crazy, of course, everyone went ooohhh and ahhhh over the pigments, lipsticks, and I guess from my pictures you know what I went for immediately!!

Though it was super tempting to grab a lot more stuff (I am kind of interested in the pore primer, and mineral liquid foundtion, cream blusher) I controlled myself, and grabbed stuff which are really unique and I can collect and use.  I will talk about each of them as we go through the pictures.

Here is a collective picture of my little haul.  Joey was also sweet to give us all some freebies and samples.

It may look like I got the usual boring neutrals and what looks like TWO empty boxes.. but let me show you... let me show you..!!!

My most exciting and wacky finds were these, which I intend to keep for Halloween and God knows what other weird and funny events that come my way.

GLOW IN THE DARK eyelashes ($14 a pair)   -- I bought 2 pairs.

Because if I wear these out, I better have  my whole entourage with me, and I got one more pair for someone else to keep me company so we can rock them together.  They kick ar*e GLOW even when I have my hands just covering the side of the box.

And for safer options we have the following:

Pigments!! I am not a huge fan, because though the colors are amazing, and they always look super pretty, but I seldom reach for mine....

The pictures really don't do the following pigments justice.  They are POW in your face shimmery, and while not very wearable, are perfect for just tapping lightly over whatever eyeshadow you have on, for that disco-ball (and you know I mean it in the most flattering, chic way ok!) effect.

I chose 2 samples of the HD pigment sample which arent for sale yet.. the chrome color is great to tap over any color even though it looks very dark grey in the swatch.

The mineral pigment is the smoothest and creamiest I have tried on...in terms of pigment.  So smooth and the color range is limited, but what they have, is very pretty (oh how I hate to keep using the same word, pretty - it doesn't even mean anything anymore, does it?).  I had to resist getting the colors that look - pretty - and stick to one which I shall try to use more often.  So I chose Smokey Quartz.

See for yourself the swatches.  And I swatched them on my hands too, where you can see the effect much better... but clever me, I washed my hands and forgot to take the picture first.  Cos I didn't want glitter all over my camera by the end of this entry.  Urgh.

And now for the eyeshadows (they are S$15 a piece, and I Bullet in the pan form).

The other two, Satin Sheer Shadows are freebies, and I exchanged my dark green (ala MAC humid) with Kas for the medium brown one.  I actually really like the pale tan shade (558)... though they are labelled sheer, I thought they provide very decent payoff.  Loves.

I bought Bullet e/s which is the most striking to me, it reminds me of the ongoing contest which FacesbySarah aka Sarah is holding now, which is to create a look using Silver, Hot Pink and Blue.  I think she also has this eyeshadow. It feels so super creamy, like a foiled pigment, even the MAC MA we showed it to later in the day was very impressed. :p

So, I think I did good.  1 eyeshadow, 2 pairs of lashes, 1 pigment!  The rest are freebies and samples.

And Joey is so super nice, she even threw in some LUSH samples for us, because she just came back from Taiwan... and in my little sample bundle includes Porridge soap, a vitamin C face toner?, and the new Tinted moisturiser which Sara snooped around and featured here.  :)

That's all, and I must say I really  had such a great time trying out and buying makeup yesterday, and with all my like-minded enablers, that's double the fun!

p/s: I paid for the stuff which I mentioned, except for the samples and freebies.  These are my honest opinions, and I am not affliated with My Red House.
