About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

No ads, no paid links etc please.  I am in charge of all content and pictures here.

I am not a makeup artist, nor do I have any professional training in makeup.

Review & Tutorial: Wavy Hair with Babyliss Pro Rebel Pink Porcelain Conical Curling Wand

    Hi hi!

Just want to share my thoughts on the Babyliss Pink Porcelain Cornical Curling Wand, which I bought earlier this week.  Quite a few of you were interested in a review of this product, so I shall try to attempt to share my thoughts on this!  I ain't a hair expert, cos I am pretty  much low maintainence when it comes to hair styling.

    *** My hair ramble ***

Also, do take note that I prefer my hair kind of messy (even when I had rebonded straight hair, it's never neat nor in place all the time).  I also hardly comb nor brush my hair.  The only maintainence I do for my hair is to do salon treatments, and DIY color it black every few months - not to cover white hairs, not yet, hahaha - but my natural hair color is a dark dark reddish brown, always been like that since I was a kid.  And I have been through stages (in my younger days) to color them all sorts of brown and red, whatever the name on the box says... but I have come to realise that super uber jet blue black hair suits me the most.  The stark black color just makes my fine hair look thicker, healthier and glossier.  And the last time I rebonded my hair was 2 years back, I naturally have straight hair anyway, so the rebonding just improves the texture of my natural hair.  I also normally wash my hair everyday, except this weekend, cos I just colored it.

So, in this entry, you are looking at day old hair, meaning it has not been washed for more than a day.  I also did not use any products on my hair, no heat protectant, no curling styling spray.. nothing!  I curled it yesterday when I went out, and the curls/ waves stayed nicely throughout the evening.  So today, I am trying it out again, taking pictures of the process.

There is also a You Tube tutorial (by pixi2woo aka Tanya) on the same hair product, and the way she does her hair is exactly the same as how I did it.  CLICK HERE to watch the video.

Edited: I put together a bunch of 'inspiration' pictures, which I googled and found on the net.  Just enter 'beachy waves' and these are the results you get.  I can't ignore the irony that none of these pictures are beach-related.  LOL.

    Here we go!

Switch on the curling wand!  Duh~  When only the green light stops blinking, this means the wand is ready for use.  I use the hottest setting, cos this makes the waves last longer.  I also didn't use the finger gloves which came with the wand, because I find them quite clumsy.

I didn't divide my  hair by sections very neatly.  I just grab sections of various sizes and wrap them around the wand.  If you like messy loose waves, you should curl uneven hair sections... cos you get the tighter curls and the loose waves.  Then when you tousle them all later on, you will achieve that beachy wavy hair.

It is very easy to use.  The conical wand is made of porcelain, as the name suggests, and it's very smooth.  Each time you are done with each section, leave it, and move on to the next.  Only loosen up the hair when it's all cooled down.  Or else you will just end up with lame curls that will not last.

It is so difficult to take pictures of the curls when my hair is super black.  Everything just turned out a black glob in my camera.  LOL.  But I try my best.

I could have been a lot neater and more systematic, but I think you can see pretty clearly what is going on.  You can use some hair spray, etc to hold the waves, add some gloss etc etc.. but I shan't bother, since it is a demo.

Yup, to sum up my thoughts, and also some tips and tricks:

    1. Work with 'old' hair, I find that curling brand new washed hair doesn't curl so well, or last as long.
    2. Go by instinct, I usually just grab sections from one side to the next side... and I don't look into the mirror while I am curling it, because then I would get too conscious of HOW I am curling it, and then you take much longer time to position yourself.  I can do my whole head in less than ten minutes without looking too much in the mirror.
    3. This wand is able to curl your hair pretty fast.  So you can do it just before you leave the house.
    4. Do not overload on products.  You don't want stiff curls which look like telephone wires, tight ringlets.  Think Nicole Kidman in the 90s.  Only she can pull that off, I think.
    5. If you want tighter curls, curl small sections of your hair.  For loose waves, curl bigger sections.  But hold your hair around the wand for the same amount of time (about 45s to a min) because you want the curls to last regardless of whether they are tight curls or loose waves.
    6. Loosen the hair sections only after your hair is all cooled down. This will help the curls to last longer.
    7. Use different directions when you curl sections of the hair.  Some can be outwards, and some inwards.  This will create more interesting texture.

I highly recommend this curling wand!  As I mentioned in my haul entry, it costs me S$60+ inclusive of shipping from the UK, which is cheaper than the shopping mall carts that charge around S$120 or more.

If you have any questions about this product, and how I use it, do leave your comments below!

I hope this has been helpful!  Thanks for reading~

Haul! Babyliss Pink Porcelain Conical Curling Wand

    Hi hi!

Just want to share something which I ordered last week.  It's the  Babyliss Pro Rebel Pink Porcelain Conical Curling Wand (what a mouthful there!) which I ordered from ukhairdressers.com.  It costs 22.95 pounds, and shipping to Sg is only 4.50pounds.  The whole transaction prolly took one week at the most.  To be honest, I kind of ordered it almost immediately after I saw pearlicious 's heated rollers haul entry.  :)

I have seen similar conical wands on sale at those shopping carts/ stalls in our shopping malls, and I have heard from my girl pals who bought them,  they cost something like S$150 each.  That's kind of expensive.  For this Babyliss model, I paid around S$60+ inclusive of shipping, which I thought is very reasonable.

It comes with a mat, and a pair of safety finger gloves.  The mat is for you to rest the wand, so that it doesn't 'melt' the surface of your table, or wherever you put your heated wand while styling your hair.  Check out the major funky finger gloves, they make me laugh!

And then I just kind of haphazardly curled a couple of sections of my hair, and when I do my hair maybe this weekend, I will post  more pictures.  :)

And this conical wand comes in two sizes.  I bought the bigger one, as I prefer loose waves.

That's all, and thanks for reading.

Product Rave: Cover Girl Oil Control Pressed Powder (And New Hair?)

    Hi hi!

As I am typing this, my throat is burning like crazzzzzzy......and I can't complete a sentence without coughing 82109839028130 times. Seriously. But I will be going to the doc tomorrow to fix this.

Just feel I should devote a rave entry just for this product, which is the Cover Girl Oil Conrol Pressed Powder.  If you noticed my previous LOTD, I have been using this product quite a bit, I also featured it in my March Faves entry.

I know that we don't get Cover Girl products in SG, and I was lucky to get this as part of a swap with Liana.... but well, a rave is a rave, and I shall rave on anyway.

The pressed powder comes with a puff which I don't use, because it will be kept right on top of the powder, and I want to avoid any contamination, and you know how these puffs can kind of become 'oily' and leave a stain on the powder if you store it directly on top of the powder, right? So, anyway, I use my kabuki brush and just dust this all over my face to set my foundation.

    Update:

The color I have for the powder is 525 buff beige, it is not a 2-way cake or foundation powder, and I would say the coverage/ texture is translucent, which is suitable for touching up, setting foundation etc etc.

    What I like about it:

    - gives a smooth matte finish

    - as compared to a loose powder, it is much neater

    - long lasting finish

    - the blue compact is so sleek and cute! and it is not cheap plasticky at all.

What may not be so good?

    - I still need to blot as I normally do, which I don't mind, cos as I said many times before, the weather here is just too humid and my working environment is such that I kind of sweat and get oily through the day.

Side note: I realise I use a brush with pressed products to dust them on my face, and a puff with loose products to press them on my face.  Any of you with the same habits?

I guess while I like to splurge and indulge in my $120 face powder, there is a certain thrill and satisfaction in finding something really cheap (though in this case, free) product that works awesome.

    And another random sidenote:

I colored my hair today, nothing new, in terms of color, which is just black.  I have been doing it black for as long as I can remember.  My hair has been through stages of dodgy shades of brown/ red etc etc during varsity days, but I think black is the way to go for me now.  I sometimes do it at the salon, though I DIY 90% of the time.  Black is black is black.  However, I noticed that the drugstores stopped selling 'Blue Black' hair dyes.  The blackest I can find is "natural black".  Why???  My hair stylist is always tsk-tsk at the stark blackness of my hair, and steer away whenever I bring up crazy ideas of streaks/highlights etc (cos it is so abused by black hair dyes no other color can show up), and preferring to suggest colored extensions instead.

I normally keep a few boxes of these black hair dyes at home (usually buying them when I see them on offer), cos whenever I feel like it's time, I will just DIY.

Yup, and so black is the new hair color, again.

That's all... and I have been watching the Telephone video on repeat so many times.. very inspired to re-create a couple of looks from there... and strengthened my resolve to stay on track (at the running track), Lady Gaga seriously rocks.  I can ramble on about her... but there is another time and space for that.  :)

Vegas Haul: Illamasqua, Drugstore, Random~(Part 2)

    Hi!

Just a little introduction to what these 'parts' are all about... last week, my sister went to Tokyo/ Vegas with her bf, just for fun, and of course, I had to 'tag along' not physically, but a whole list of MU stuff to buy, since I have heard the MAC Pro store at  Vegas is huge, and etc etc all that jazz.  She also got me clothes and underwear etc . so I think one of these parts will be a clothing haul entry. I am putting them in parts because I don't want to put everything in one HUGE entry, and I am also anticipating a few more items to come in mid-week, also from the US.. but I will tell you more about that when I actually get my hands on those items.

I also want to put it out there that I am in no way boasting about anything I bought  (I have never made such a disclaimer before, in case you are wondering, because I never feel like I need to explain to anyone why I have to buy so much stuff), but I just want to share my happiness and excitement at getting the new stuff as only junkies or maybe shopoholics like me can relate to.

You may have caught a glimpse of the Illamasqua products which I showed in the previous haul entry.  I got the powder blusher in Chased, which is a blue toned light pink (matte).   And then I texted her while she was already in Vegas to get me the Sonnet lipstick, which I wanted after watching one of Lorraine (The CurrentBoobies) Day in the Life videos, in which she bought this lipstick in NYC and she says it's her new fave nude cos it looks like a heavier version of YSL's 146 Tea Rose.  Yeah, that's how sucker I am.

And the next few items, my sister just grabbed while she was at Walgreens. I didn't know she will be coming back with these fun stuff!  We have the Loreal Telescopic Explosion, which is a dupe for the Givenchy phenomenon mascara.  I might do a comparison in due time... when I open this mascara.  From online reviews, the long and flimsy wand of this mascara is quite a boo boo.. but still, fun to try this out.

And the next item is one on my Drugstore Wishlist, yes, it is the Maybelline Pulse Perfection which is a vibrating mascara.

Then my sister got this BUMP ITS!  Hahaa.. I just had to laugh at the name!  I am sure you know what this is for--think xteener on YT has a tutorial or smth for this.   But I don't think I will use this, I will leave the hair experiment to my sisters.

Yup.... I prolly have a major MAC haul , clothing haul, Sephora haul etc etc in the works.  Just that it is a little time consuming to take detailed product pictures, write about them... and I can only afford to do one entry a day during the weekday, for me to just 'relax' after a long day at work, before getting back to even more work.

I hope you enjoy these entries, and thanks for reading!!!

LOTD - Wavy Hair & Little Fashion Haul

    Hi!

Now that I spend less time on my MU routine, I have more time for .... HAIR.  Hence the effort to curl my hair, and here, I used my GHD flat iron to create the loose waves.  I didn't use much hair products, so after a couple of hours, the waves sort of straightened out. I still need to get the hang of curling my hair with a straightener, because some parts are more curly while others are very lame waves.

On my face: Shu Uemura Nobura cream foundation, MAC Studio Finish Concealer and MAC Azalea Blush.  Forgot to use lipstick today.

And I bought this pair of jeans today, at Bershka for $59.90, which is quite cheap.  I am quite big  and tall in case you can't tell from the pictures, so my clothes are usually US10 or UK12 or 14 depending on the cutting.   The pair of heels (maybe 2cm high) are from New Look, which were on sale, and I paid about $20 for them.  I think they are cute for going out.

On a side note, I think I need to do a REVISED Christmas wishlist.

    Thanks for reading!
