About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

    Inspired: DIY Body Chain Necklace

I like the body chain she is wearing!

Saw someone wearing a body chain over her tee yesterday at Starbucks, and I got home and did a little image search on the net.  You won't believe all kinds of dodgy images which turned up... of half nekidd women clutching their boobs and wearing nothing but kinkier leather and chain types of harnesses.  That was kind of funny!  I also did a little online browsing for retailers selling these chains, and the prices are way crazy, so I decided to DIY.....my definition of DIY is, I buy the materials, my sis will assemble the stuff for me.

A couple of hours in the hot afternoon sun at Chinatown, and waaaaay too much KOI later, I finally accomplished my little mission to recreate this chain, with a little personal touch.

ONE:  You can wear this body chain over a tee, or a little black dress!

TWO:  You can wear it under a top with low neckline.... and people will be wondering where that chain leads to.... LOL LOL!  Something different!  This is prolly my fave way of wearing it.  Note how I got the sis to add some crystal beads to the neckline area.

THREE:  Over a plain tee.  This is my youngest sis modelling the body chain.

FOUR:  Wear it like a regular necklace!  So many possibilities!!

the good thing about DIY (besides being cheaper) is that you get to measure it to your size!!

Would you wear something like this??

    Haul! No Makeup, Just Fashion

    Yay!

If you read this little blog long enough, you know I shop a lot besides makeup, and I don't usually show 90% of the non-MU stuff I bought, simply because it's not very relevant...

Anyhow.... 2 pairs of Ray Bans were purchased, one for me and one for my sis... and I also got a cute FCUK blouse.

I wanted the Ray Bans aviator because I kind of want an update on my old pair, which has greyish gradient tinted lens.  Today I got a pair of gold framed pinkish brown one, and the sister got a black framed see thru brownish one. We got them at an optical store in Chinatown, simply because it is at these old school shops that you find the greatest and more classic Ray Bans, without the commericalised price tags.

Wearing a pair of nice stylish shades really distracts from the fact that you aren't wearing any makeup.  And these 'sheer' shades provide sun protection, and enough coverage and you don't really need to take them off indoors.

And this Fcuk blouse is cute!  I think it goes with anything and can be casual and formal depending on what bottom you match it with.  A denim shorts, great for summer, and a black pencil skirt will take you to the office boardroom.  Excuse the flatten chest area and track pants cos I was roaming about town today in my sports bra+jogging gear (though I wasn't doing anything like jogging at all).  Ha ha ha.

Yup, that's all, what are some of your recent fave fashion purchases??

    Thanks for looking!

    Threadless Haul (Clothes)

    Hi hi!

So this is my threadless.com haul.  They have been having these crazy $9 for one day sale recently, and I took the opportunity to order a load of tees. My sister ordered a couple of times before, and I think they have some quite cute designs (until you meet someone else on the street wearing the same tee as you, then it's not funny anymore.  Haha.)

I ordered my tees in MEN sizes (L, to be exact).  Reason being, I like oversized tees.  They fit nicely with jeans or leggings, and are way more comfy, and also give the illusion of a lankier body shape, plus, IMO I think fitted tees (except for polo tees) just look kind of 90s-dated.

And anyway, the brother can totally share these tees with me, cos he is so tall and broad.

I call this Alice in Wonderland tee.

    And this I call pokerface.

    I like the little graphics.

These two in Ladies cut are for my sisters.

And the last two for the BF.

Another haul entry coming up.  The best kind.

LOTD - Wavy Hair & Little Fashion Haul

    Hi!

Now that I spend less time on my MU routine, I have more time for .... HAIR.  Hence the effort to curl my hair, and here, I used my GHD flat iron to create the loose waves.  I didn't use much hair products, so after a couple of hours, the waves sort of straightened out. I still need to get the hang of curling my hair with a straightener, because some parts are more curly while others are very lame waves.

On my face: Shu Uemura Nobura cream foundation, MAC Studio Finish Concealer and MAC Azalea Blush.  Forgot to use lipstick today.

And I bought this pair of jeans today, at Bershka for $59.90, which is quite cheap.  I am quite big  and tall in case you can't tell from the pictures, so my clothes are usually US10 or UK12 or 14 depending on the cutting.   The pair of heels (maybe 2cm high) are from New Look, which were on sale, and I paid about $20 for them.  I think they are cute for going out.

On a side note, I think I need to do a REVISED Christmas wishlist.

    Thanks for reading!

Tried & Tested: Dark Lids for a Night Out

    Hi hi!

Just want to do a little follow up to the Dark Lids look that I posted a couple of days back, click here to read more if you are interested.

I used all different products (different black products, different lashes and blusher) for the same look, and to very nice effect too -- I think.

I wanted to test the 'wearability' of this look, and learned a few pointers in the process:

    • Do the eyes first, because there is going to be fallout, and you don't want to spend time cleaning up the undereye area and smear your foundation.
    • Keep the rest of the face clean and as flawless as possible.  Hence I spent time painstakingly concealing all the little spots on my face.
    • Keep the brows groomed but light, so that the focus is on the dark lids and clean face.

Nonetheless, I was determined to rock this look and here are the results.  And hey, I added a faux mole above my mouth, cos that's what Nic (pixiwoo) did in the tutorial.

    Products used:

Eyes: MAC painterly paintpot(base), MAC Your Ladyship pigment & Inuovi Platinum e/s (highlight)

The Black Part:  Stila Golden Noir smudgepot, Ed Pinau (that freebie eyeshadow) on top.  Perfect match for each other because of the whole black and gold glitter going on.

Lashes: Sasa lashes (forgot the brand), and YSL Faux Cils mascara

Face: Dior Extreme Fit, MAC Studio Sculpt Concealer

Cheeks: NARS Laguna, and MAC Azalea (which is AMAZING for this look!!)

Lips: YSL RV Lingerie Pink (7)

And I did say tried and tested, so here are a few pictures of the night:

FYI Sister is using Style Demon on her cheeks  :)

Sidenote:  I think the whole dark lids/ pink lips combination is the Louis Vuitton runaway looks for the past couple of seasons.

That's all (so much for a little follow up), and thanks for reading!!

    NARS Haul

    Hi hi,

Last week, a gf of mine went to Hong Kong for a shopping spree, and I tagged along with a little request of my own - NARS.  I had given a list consisting of blushers (Outlaw, Mata Hari), and eyeshadows.... But she said that the blushers were sold out everywhere --- same as when my sister went more than a month ago.  :(  So she was only able to help me get the eyeshadows.  I have not actually bought the eyeshadows in person at the counter before (because I was carried away with the colorful blushers) so I decided to be very safe and stick to neutral/ brown shades.

So, don't be surprised, if you see that the following colors all fall into the same category of neutral browns.  I figure they will be great for everyday use, and most versatile.  And I wanted 2 eyeshadows, but she bought me a third one which was also on my list as a present, so that's really lovely of her. :)

In the following picture, we have from left, Ondine, Nepal, and Ashes to Ashes.

And in the next few pictures, I think it is very hard to tell the difference.  :(

Swatches from L to R Nepal, Ashes to Ashes, Ondine

For those who are thinking of getting NARS eyeshadows, actually, if you think about it, they cost about the same as Shu Uemura eyeshadows (about $35-39) but NARS eyeshadows contain a lot more product at 2.2g.   I think their popular eyeshadow choices are Ondine, Ashes to Ashes, and Galapagos, and even Mekong. The packaging is lovely, the quality is divine, and you just can't go wrong with NARS eyeshadows and blushers.  Just make sure you steer away from some of their eyeshadows which can be a little too glittery/ chunky.  Refer to the NARS website for product description.

    Wardrobe (dis)organisation

    Hi...

I have long come to accept that my room will never be in a state of pristine neatness.  No matter how much time I spend to pack my stuff, everything will be messed up in a matter of hours. I can only strive to put things in their rightful places, and even so, that is short-lived.  Hence, only the very close and beloved people are allowed into my room. Because there will be no turning back once they have seen the mess.

Usually I take my LOTDs rather close up, and sometimes I am in my sis's room, or living room.  So my room is seldom exposed to the public eye (LOL).

I have this idealised vision of my room, that somewhere out there, in due time, a very spacious haven out there is waiting for me to live there, it will be fully furnished with built in shelves, dressing tables, customised storage units for my accessories, makeup, clothes and more.

Regardless, I wil show a small portion of my wardrobe.  I recently cleared a couple of shelves to hold my bags and stuff, and meanwhile I threw away a trash bag full of unused stuff. What I did is to first stuff the bags with newspapers, so that they won't be out of shape or flatten beyond recognition when I don't use them for a long time.  Then I put the bags into their own dust bags so that they don't go all mouldy etc.

I put the crushed newspapers into a plastic bag so they don't dirty the inside of my bag.

The shelves are pretty deep and I can put the bigger bags on there too.

Yup... that's nothing much to see, except for these covered lumps in my wardrobe space.

I just think it is better to stash them away, free from dust and all.

Option B - The Belt (and new eyeshadow)

    Hi!!

Earlier this week, I posed the question: to belt or not, and most, if not all, went for the belted option -- for an event which I just attended.  But many of you also suggested that I wear a skinner and perhaps matching (ie, black) belt, and I just want to follow up by showing the end results.

So I wore a skinny, also studded black belt loosely around my waist.

I am also showing one of my newer eyeshadow, which you might recall, I bought in JB,  Mineralised eyeshadow.  A couple of you requested that I show how the color swatch and wear on my eyes.. so here goes.

Other products I used --- a greyish kind of smokey eyelook.

Eyes: MAC Painterly pp as base, Vanilla e/s highlight, Mineralised e/s all over lids, Knight Divine e/s outer corner/crease, Stila Black Noir to line.

Lashes: Red Cherry lashes, and YSL Faux Cils mascara

Lips: MAC Blackware Cremesheen Glass, and Fantabulous Dazzleglass

    Cheeks: NARS Laguna and Sin

Face: MUFE routine and MAC studio sculpt concealer (NC20)

Picture taken in my room with orangey lighting.

I also 'ironed' my hair, which is why it looks neat and shiny here.  Haha.

One shot in a 'normal' lighting.

That's all... and hope you enjoy this entry.  I know I have been kind of bombarding with the LOTDs in the past couple of days, blame it on my sudden rush of creativity or motivation.  Haha.  Giveaway updates coming soon, I promised, as soon as I get all my information and 'stock' ready!

    Modern Gothic Look

Would I step out of the house looking like this? Of course not.  Frankly, this is not a look for me.  But I had fun trying to pile on the colors (or the lack there of, in this case) in this look.

I am trying (very loosely) to recreate the modern gothic look which pixiwoo did to promote/ raise awareness of the Sophie Lancaster foundation.

    Products used:

Face: Christian Dior Radiant Base, MAC Studio Sculpt Foundation (NC15), Set with Maybelline Loose Powder in Porcelain (for added paleness)

Cheeks: NARS Laguna and NARS Orgasm

I left my brows bare for this look.

Eyes: MAC Vanilla e/s, MAC Black Tied e/s (which I applied over Stila Gold Noir smudgepot used as a base here).  Liners: MAC Black Russian

Lashes: Red Cherry #218, and Shu Uemura Cobweb, and also YSL Faux Cils

Lips: I used Studio Sculpt concealer to erase the lips, and then applied MAC Underaged lipglass.

When everything is done, I dusted MUFE HD powder all over my face for a flawless finish.  You can't see the effect of this product unless you take pictures and all that.

Faux Leather jacket from Bershka. I was sweating buckets when taking these pictures.  Not cool at all, especially for a goth look.

On hindsight, I think this looks more like a super black smokey eye, than the goth look.  Oh well.  I hope I didn't cause any offense to anybody out there.

    And I bought these instead...

So I didn't get the Zara blouse from the previous entry, but I bought these 2 items instead.

One is a shirt from Fcuk, and the other is Madonna's Celebration album.  I bought the Video Collection which consists of 2 DVDS with 47 of her videos, and I thought it is rather good value at $32.90 from HMV.

Got the shirt at Tangs (having the 12% rebate promotion going on), and it is actually a man's shirt, but I like the dots, and how the buttons don't go all the way down, so I think it doesn't look TOO masculine.  Plus my bro can borrow this shirt from me if he needs to.  Everyone at home can wear this!  Haha.

I think I will pair this with my trusty leggings and MAC's Russian Red lipstick! If I do this, I will post pictures over the weekend.

And random outfit of the day:  I haven't worn this tunic blouse in more than a year, so I wore it to work today, napped in it this afternoon and then to color my BFF's hair at home, and go to town to meet my sister!!  I bought this from FCUK too.

That's all, and thanks for reading.
