About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

DIOR Summer 2012: Nude Tan 001 Aurora & 003 Zenith [Photos, Swatches & Comparisons]

I purchased both the Dior summer bronzers yesterday (10% + 5% off at Robinsons) - I don't think the summer collection is displayed at counters, because testers aren't in stock yet.  But a look at both the bronzers, I knew they would be totally wearable on me, and hence, I should get them both.  I managed to save more than $10 on each of these bronzers, so that made it an even sweeter deal.

This year's bronzers come with a mini kabuki brush which you can use to buff the product on your face for a healthy natural glow.

001 Aurora has the same name as last year's summer bronzer which never made it to Singapore.  It is a light tan bronzer with a rosy tinge.

003 Zenith is a slightly more tan and beigy bronzer

    (and where's 002 and 003???)   oh well.

Both bronzers are finely milled, and super smooth.  The shimmer is extremely subtle, so there is no danger of over-applying this product.  And both bronzers are just as light and natural, and in my opinion, suit light to medium skin tones.

I would apply the bronzers with a kabuki brush, or a large powder brush, on my cheeks, and up to around my temples (as I will demonstrate below).

I hope these swatches help, if you are not sure if you should get them, seeing as the testers aren't out yet, and seeing as they are limited edition, and if you are thinking of these bronzers.... you better go grab them soon before they ran out.

Comparison of the packaging - the actual compact of the bronzer is smaller than last year's bronzer, but both contain the same amount of product 10g.   The box is huge, because of the mini kabuki brush that it comes with.

The mini kabuki brush - soft and dense enough and I like the little velvet roll it comes in.  Handy for touch ups.

The sleek and elegant casing, very compact, and closes with a little magnetic snap.  I like the compact casing.  Sturdy and just so chic!

two of them side by side

the best shades remind me a little of the Guerlain matte bronzers

the NUDE embossing contains very very subtle shimmers

but overall, the bronzers are quite velvety matte

    close up pictures & details

    001 Aurora

    003 Zenith

    and comparisons

You can see that all three bronzers are very natural looking, and look like they have a satiny finish.  But when I was outdoors, I could see the slightest shimmer bits that glisten golden pink in under the hot sunny afternoon light.  It is a really skin enhancing type of bronzer, and not the sun-kissed/ sun-burnt type of intense bronzers which you might typically think of.

I have often used 001 Aurora (the 2011 edition) as a blush, and it gives me a natural blush, not rosy blush, but just some color to my cheeks, and a subtle radiant glow. It's very wearable, and easy to use.

    How I apply the bronzer

I am using 003 Zenith in this look.

p/s: eyeshadow I am wearing is Le Metier de Beaute Chameleon, Lipstick is Lancome's Rouge in Love 243,

Katy Perry by Eyelure falsies, Chanel Kabuki brush

Step One: buff it from sides of my face, to apple of the cheeks

Step two: buff it around the forehead (at the sides)

    and the overall look

    Product description - link here

Customised for a radiant healthy glow

With the aim of a natural and radiant tan, Dior creates a new healthy glow makeup product with a bare skin effect for all skin tones, all year long.

Healthy Glow Enhancing Powder is nestled in a precious round case in white bronze, engraved with the Dior canework motif and decorated with the embossed NUDE logo. This incredibly chic object is now a must in all tanning routines, accompanied by a mini kabuki brush.

The Nude Tan formulas contain translucent mineral prisms that adjust to the skin tone and the surrounding light. The skin tone is enhanced with a sheer, natural finish. Inside the Diorskin Nude range, with the Nude Tan powders, active mineralised water is enriched with a sweet orange extract to boost microcirculation*: with each application, the skin glows with vitality and looks more and more beautiful.

To achieve the illusion of a complexion glowing with vitality, the Healthy Glow Enhancing Powder offers a range of original shades. It combines two < colour and radiance > tones with < skin shades > for a result that matches the original skin tone, yet provides a surprisingly natural, radiance-boosting effect. Rosy harmonies add a touch of freshness and an anti-dulling effect, while apricot harmonies ensure a healthy glow, infused with sensuality.

Dior Addict Lip Balm 003 Crystal Coral [Review, Swatches & LOTD]

    Hi!

This entry will be a feature and review of Dior Addict Lip Balm.  At S$44 for this beauty, it might seem quite indulgent a price to pay for something that is a 'lip balm'.  However, I love it, and mine is in the shade 003 Crystal Coral, a sheer my lips but better shade. There are two other shades, one is a pinky (Crystal Pink), and one is colorless (Crystal).

This product of Dior's latest and upcoming summer collection - you can find selected pieces of this collection at the newly opened DFS Galleria, and at the rest of the Dior counters from 1 May.

    Why am I loving this?

    • Gives quite decent color payoff, despite the sheerness.

    • Lasts a good 2 - 3 hours of wear on me.

    • The moisturising effect lasts way longer, my lips felt soft and moist for the whole of the day even after the color wears off.

    • Makes my lips really nice and soft (yes, I need to repeat this, and I can't emphasise this enough)

    • It feels so smooth and creamy on my lips.  It glides on my lips, covers my lips in a very comfortable and waxy film like texture.

    • If you compare this to the YSL Rouge Volupte Sheer Candy which I mentioned in the previous entry, this is thicker in texture, and creamier.

    • It's really a luxe and effective lip balm, and if most lipsticks make your lips crack, or peel, I think you are going to love this product.

    Photos and swatches:

Here you can see the waxy film like texture of the lip balm

It feels really REALLY good on the lips!

As you can see, there is some color but nothing that screams bright coral.

It just blends in nicely with my natural lip color.

    All products used:

Foundation - Rachel K CC Cream (light), Collection2000 Lasting Perfection Foundation (mixed with) Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal, set with La Mer Powder

Concealer - Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage (SC-03)

Lips - Dior Addict Lip Balm 003 Crystal Coral

Eyes - NARS pro prime, Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eyeshadow OR313, Loreal Infaillible Shadows in 02 Sahara Treasure & Burning Black, Browbone highlight Lunasol 04 Light Beige

Liner - NARS Larger than Life Via Veneto

Cheeks - Guerlain Meteorites 00 Blanc de Perle, Guerlain Terra Inca Sublime Radiant Powder

Overall, I highly recommend, and hope you find this review and feature helpful.

    Thank you for reading.

    A Special Afternoon with DIOR

On Friday, I had the chance to particpate in a special makeover at the Dior Addict Extreme event that is currently taking place at Paragon (it will be there til 19 April 2012, after which the event will 'travel' to other locations (including Vivocity & ION - more details on this will be updated as I receive the confirmed information).

This event is of course, in conjunction with the launch of the latest Dior Addict Extreme, which I have mentioned several times in this blog, and review several of the items in the collection. Customers who would like to experience this whole makeover package just need to pay $150 (fully redeemable for Dior products).  The makeover package includes firstly, a makeup session by Dior's regional makeup artist, hair styling, a Dior customised manicure, a mini photoshoot, and a fun photobooth.

    the makeup & hair

I told the regional makeup artist - Aniruj Saenkampa that I wanted the iconic look with Rivera lipstick - to match my Rivera manicure, and he set out to do the accompanying eye look, using the Bleu de Paris palette (from the recent New Look Collection).  He did quite a smokey eyes on me, and elongated my eyes using the darkest shade of the palette, and a dark brown pencil liner.  He also brushed the NEW LOOK mascara on my miniscule lashes (both of which did not smudge at all throughout the humid day, and a movie).

The shots that the assistant/ translator lady took during the makeover was extremely blurry and unflattering, so I took this hasty close up half face shot, so you get the general idea of the overall look, hopefully.  Honestly, it is always weird and comfortable for anyone to do my makeup because I always feel like I don't look like myself in the end.  However, a few of the other ladies who were also doing the makeover look really poised and glamorous after having their makeup done, and with their hair all set.

The hairstylist then loosely curled the ends of my hair, and then I tousled it further so I ended up with very loose waves.

    DIOR manicure

This is a special machine that Dior has specially brought it, to create their own iconic Dior manicure designs.  I am sure you might have seen similar models before, basically you pick your design, prep your nails, insert one finger in at a time, and  the machine will print the design on your nail surface.  Then the design is sealed and painted over with a topcoat.

This is one of my favourite part of the makeover package, to be honest.  It's fun, relaxing and totally girly.  There are over 40 Dior designs to choose from.  I only did my thumbs because I had just painted Rivera the night before, and didn't want to take up any more time doing all ten finger nails.

    DIOR Photobooth

This is my favourite part of the whole package!  It's like an old school photobooth, but customised with the Dior Addict Extreme graphic.  Now, posing in front of a lens, by myself, at myself, is TOTALLY different from having an actual professional photographer telling you to tilt your face, turn your body, chin up and down (which was what happened during the mini photoshoot earlier, I was quite frazzled, and I didn't think the end photos turn out very well - it's like I was too 'chin down' and my forehead looked like a pancake... not the photographer's fault, it's all my own nerves and stiffness to be blamed).

When I just need to face the lens and a timer, I kind of knew my own facial angle, and in the privacy of the little photobooth, it was easier for me to pose at ease.

They also gave you kisses & lips props to pose with.  Together with in in the pictures are the girls from the Dior PR and marketing team.  (Thank you again for having me there!)

The whole session took about 1.5 hours, and if you would like to doll up yourself, and try out the Dior makeup, this is a great chance to do so, you get to chat with the makeup artists, take some photographs (you get to keep them), and also do some Dior makeup shopping.   Personally, it's totally worth it, and you should check it out.

I shall end this entry with a sneak peak of Dior's upcoming summer collection *Swoons*!!!!

More information & photographs in upcoming entries.  Stay tuned!

I hope this has been helpful, and thank you for reading.
