So, is instagram the new blog? Yes, it allows me to give very quick overview of a certain item/ topic...it allows me to post 'live' updates of certain events I am at (since I don't actually blog about event matters on the blog) but I do think that it is a lazy way to blog. For example, I don't really do monthly fave entries on the blog... but if you follow me on IG, you will see that I quite faithfully post monthly faves.. it just seems easier to post a bunch of stuff and write a line each about why I like them.. but if I were to translate it to a blog scenario, I don't want to be repetitive nor have to come up with a whole paragraph to explain why it's my fave. Despite the ease and popularity of IG posts..I believe there is still a place for my good old blog...especially when I have to go into details of how a particular product works... or when I have to post 10 pictures of lipstick swatches..(how can spam my followers with horror gasps in your face lip swatches, right?). IG is a little extension/follow up of my blog..it allows me to interact with a live audience.. but if you want the full works, you got to read it here from the mothership, so to speak. Besides, we don't want long rambly captions to accompany each pic I post...cos most of the time I don't even read beyond the first line of an epic caption.
I also believe in an element of spontaneity and realism when it comes to IG... I would never take a pic with my camera, then upload it to my comp for 'post-production' and then transfer it back to my phone to be posted on IG...then it is not very 'insta' anymore, right? I am also not one of those who painstakingly edit, crop, arrange my pics... for me, what you see is what you get. It takes a careful eye to catch the perfect angle without having to try too hard, or having to twist and turn your arm, or have someone else pose and re-shoot, and re-post and all that orchestrating is just too much effort for me. I admire the skills and effort that some people put into posting every picture, making sure that it looks perfect, and everything looks just so.
If you are still reading this, thank you! There are a lot of people who have achieved 'fame' and attention via their popular IG accounts. People who have passionate causes further their message through daily updates, be it weightloss, fitness or their home decor ideas. When you hit xxx number of followers it is only a matter of time because the companies/ brands/ up and coming business come a knocking and approach you to 'advertise' their products. It is a win win situation for everyone. If I am the company, I invite you in for a preview, you snap pics, post and next minute...'public' interest is piqued, and I have achieved the objective of sending out the campaign teasers (cos everyone can search for that specific #hashtag and see what the fuss is all about) After all, when you post that pic of their latest product and post it online - your xxx number of followers will see it in the next few hours, like it, ask you when it is coming, do you like it, wah wah wah wah... compared that how long it would take to craft a blog entry (let me find a good day to take pictures for the blog and write about the products- which, let's face it, can take up to a couple of weeks given my schedule), and compare that to how long it would take for a publication to update their readers in their issue three months later... even magazines and brands have their own IG accounts so they can get in on the bandwagon and update on their own stuff as well. This is just the new way for things to go. I am not saying that it is a good or bad thing. It is just the way they are. We have to move with the times, and embrace all these changes - but don't get caught up into the who gets what, who goes where ...cos seriously, at the end of the day, if you love what you do, just do what you love anyway.. it sounds cheesy... but to me, I will stop when it stops being fun. That's what I tell people, who ask me about my blog, how I keep going after all these years. And I hope the blog reading and looking will continue to be fun for everyone too.
