About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

NARSissist Palette Look Two - Warm Smokey & Hot Pink Lips

    Hi hi!

This is another look that I did using the new NARSissist Palette - a warm smokey brown - incidentally I already own all these shades in my collection haha.. Fez, Mekong, Bali, etc etc... for detailed swatches, click this entry here.

You can get this palette for yourself via preorder on the 27 Jan at this micro site - http://bit.ly/narsissist. or it will be in store from 3 Feb.  The palette retails for SGD$115.

I was very kindly gifted the NARSissist palette, and here are some gorgeous close ups of the palette -

I like that there's a good combo of matte and metallic shades -

Swatches of the colors I used,

on my brows & to blend - the matte browns

on the lids - the deep metallic browns

on the browbone - the pale shimmery ones

and a close up of the eyelook -

    an overall look -

I decided to pair the warm smokey eyelook with hot pink lips that match my dress.

    All things used:

Face - Radiant Creamy Foundation mixed with a little Radiance Enhancing primer, set with Loose Powder (Eden), and finally finished with Translucent Pressed Powder

    Concealer - Radiant Creamy Concealer

Liners - Larger than Life Via Veneto (black on upper lids), Larger than Life Via Appia (metallic brown on lower lids)

Lips - Cinematic Lipstick Goodbye Emmanuelle, Satin Lip Pencil YU

Cheeks - Laguna Bronzer, Final Cut blush

Eyes - NARSissist Palette, colors as stated above

Brows - NARSissist Palette, colors as stated, set with Brow Gel in Piraeus

Dress - Graphic print dress with contrasting collar ASOS

    Nails - GummiNails

NARSissist Palette Look One - Smokey Grey

    Hi hi!!

This is a quick look that I did using the upcoming NARSissist Palette - a beautiful palette that contains 15 NARS permanent eyeshadow shades.  If you are a neutral lover, you NEED this palette.  I was gifted this awesome palette by NARS, and I couldn't wait to try it out.  I had previously shown swatches of this palette in this entry here.

Important information on getting this palette for yourself:

You can pre-order this palette via this microsite - http://bit.ly/narsissist - on the 27 Jan.  The palette will also be available from the 3 Feb onwards at the NARS store... but to avoid any sold out situation, I would totally go for the pre-order option.
It retails for SGD$115, limited edition.

Here's what I used on the eyes - it's a rather easy smokey eyes, and I wasn't being super careful with the application.
I also kept the rest of the face very natural, in fact, I only used a tinted moisturiser for this LOTD... as the eyes & lips are the focus.

    All things used:

Face - Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser (light 2 Alaska) mixed with a little Radiance Enhancing primer, set with Loose Powder (Eden), and finally finished with Translucent Pressed Powder

    Concealer - Radiant Creamy Concealer

Liners - Larger than Life Via Veneto (black on upper lids)

    Lips - Trans Siberian

Cheeks - Laguna Bronzer, Final Cut blush

Eyes - NARSissist Palette, colors as stated above

Brows - NARSissist Palette, colors as stated, set with Brow Gel in Piraeus

    Top - ASOS

    Nails - GummiNails

I have another look, coming right after this entry!   Stay tuned!

    Thanks for looking!

NARS Lipsticks in Trans Siberian & Scarlet Empress

I picked up these two NARS red lippies during the party which I hosted at NARS back in December.. and finally got down to taking pics (and start using them).  It is my personal goal to eventually collect all the red lippies from my fave makeup brand, I think I have more than ten NARS reds..and I don't think I am halfway close.

    I got these two shades:

Trans Siberian (semi matte) - Ruby Rose, looking like a deep true red on me  LOVES

Scarlet Empress  (a little sheer, but still creamy) - a deep plum red (can't find this on the NARS Site... what's happening?)

and an overall look - more info on this look in another entry.

Wearing Trans Siberian and NARS everything else.

NARS Final Cut Blush [Photos & Comparisons]

    Hi hi!

I purchased the NARS Final Cut blush last Friday...I didn't have any intention to shop from this collection... but I saw the four blushes.. and they all look so pretty.. and well, I guess I picked the one which felt the least powdery, even though it probably already looks like one of the many other NARS blushes in my collection - that and the name itself is another frivolous reason for me to make this little purchase.

Final Cut is described as a Peach Coral... which pretty much sums up this shade.  It is mostly a velvety matte.. and can be build up to quite an intense shade.

Here's a comparison of Final Cut & Gilda (which is a permanent shade), and Gilda seems to be a tad deeper and also looks more dimensional.. though I am suspecting on the face they prolly will show up 99% the same.

Here's a pic of me wearing the blush... and more details on this very NARS look in a later entry.

What did you pick up from the Final Cut collection?

    Thanks for reading!

Haul: Tom Ford Cocoa Mirage & A Little Chat

So many people raved about the goodness of this amazing TF Cocoa Mirage, and so one fine  day, I finally decided to buy it.  I have tried out a couple of other TF quads (Cognac Sable, Burnished Amber)  before, and found their shimmery shades to be quite impressive, but other than that, I haven't found the urge to actually buy one myself.  If you look across the color range of the TF quads, Cocoa Mirage is not going to be one that grabs your attention immediately.  It is very understated, and is the only quad that consists of mostly MATTE shades.  And when I swatched them, I found that each of these matte shades are very creamy and pigmented.  I also like that the only shimmery shade makes a nice layering combo with the matte ones.  They blend very easily, and the fact that they are housed together in one neat palette just seals the deal.  And a bonus?  I used a mixture of the matte brown shades to fill in my brows today, and it works!

There are other smiliar mostly matte creamy eyeshadow palettes of course... for example Urban Decay Basics palette, and in terms of quality and color range, you can also build your own neutral matte from Inglot (I think the creaminess and pigmentation is very comparable to Inglot eyeshadows).

Some close ups of the palette -
You can see how smooth the eyeshadows are even in the pan...

I think this is quite a warm matte palette... and while they are matte, they are by no means flat/ chalky/ powdery at all.

I used the palest shade as a brow bone highlight, and blended all the other shades together on my eyes.  Overall, a very easy failproof (safe, very comfort zone) type of smokey eyes.  Can I do this look with the gazillion of other neutral eyeshadows that I already own?  Of course!  But do I want a TF palette that I can use for everyday smokey neutral look?  Yes!

Skin is looking a little crappy due to a post camp trip... but sorted that out quite quickly with my Aseop parsley seed mask & followed up with Clarins Lotus Face Oil (bam, overnight, skin is cured and back to 'normal').

    All products used:

face - Sulwhasoo Snowise BB Base, Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum foundation, set with Chanel Loose Powder

concealer - NARS Radiant Creamy finish

brows - Shiseido brow compact, set with MAC beguile brow set

eyes - TF Cocoa Mirage, Heavy Rotation Liquid Liner

lashes - falsies from Japan (no brand), YSl Faux Cils

lips - NARS Satin Lip Pencil Timanfaya, Larger than Life Gloss Bimini (from the Spring 2014 Collection)

    Tee - Cheap Monday Graffiti

*** later on in the day I used NARS Short Circuit as an OMBRE (wooooo OMBREEEE!!) stain in the centre of my lips.  Suddenly felt the whole full lips and eyes thing very heavy going.

pics below taken with my iphone5

Things we do... take selfies while getting ready.

A close up pic of the lippies I used:

I have been making a few 'good deal' purchases lately, for example, this pair of Tom Ford shades that I randomly saw at Tangs for ONLY $129!!!

A close up of the outfit from this LOTD - my new Cheap Monday graffiti tee, old navy rockstar skinny jeans, new look studded flats, Givenchy Pandora.  Comfy and nice!

Another similar outfit I wore a couple of weeks back, red checkered shirt (on sale, Zara) paired with white tee, old navy boyfriend pants, River Island flats, studded bracelet, MK rosegold watch, same Givenchy bag

New camera!  Haven't gotten to play with it much yet, but I love how cute and compact it is!  Canon Powershot N ($399).
Graphic tee in the background is from ASOS.

Also got myself a new pair of running kicks from my recent trip tp JPO, a plain all black NIKE Free Run 5.0 - this is men's size.. cos I have big feet.  Comfy, and cushiony.  Goes with my jeans and running gear.

And in view of the upcoming NARSissist Palette, I arranged this little stash of my NARS neutral eyeshadows.  Not pictured are 5 more singles, which aren't exactly in the neutral famliy.

I already have these shades that will be in the NARSissist Palette...
    Coconut Grove
    Ashes to Ashes
    Brousse #2

These are the other shades in the palette which I don't already own (mostly from existing eyeshadow duos).
    (All About Eve #1)
    (Madrague #2)
    (Madrague #1)
    (Bellissima #1)
    (Bad Behaviour)
    (Dogon #2)
    (Pandora #2)

and the rest show in the pictue are:
    Mississippi Mermaid

And wooohooo!  I finished another loose powder - Chanel Loose Powder.  Took me a few years and some straying... but I am done with this!  One of the best loose powders out there.  Sets my makeup for the day.

Hope everyone have a great week ahead!

    Thanks for reading!

    NARSissist Palette [Swatches]

Available end Jan/ Feb 2014.  Price TBC.

I was just searching for available info on this palette on the web when I came across my images (which I had posted on IG a few weeks back) on Specktra.  Since they are already out there... I shall post proper swatches here.

The NARSissist ultimate neutral palette...all the Nars eyeshadows that you could ever want, edited and arranged so beautifully in a convenient palette.  Even though I prolly already own half the shades in this palette from my NARS singles...I think I need this palette.
All the shades are beautifully formulated and intense.  It is a neutral eyeshadows and every eyeshadow palette junkie's heaven.

    More pics here:

Hope these swatches have been helpful.  There will be pre-orders for this palette, do check with your NARS BA soon.

    LOTD: NAKED 3 & Stuff

    Last LOTD of 2013!  Haha.
Used a bunch of new stuff, and I shall take this chance to ramble about them.   I didn't actually mean for this look to be an LOTD but since I had a full face of makeup on, I might as well snap a few pics, and if they turn out okay...shall post as LOTD, so here we are.

I have already rambled about my base products used in this haul entry here - I am using the Sunday Riley Tinted Primer & the Jouer Matte Tinted Moisturiser - and to sum up, I like the coverage and finish that both products provide.  I am curious to see how the SR primer will work with other foundations.

All products used will be listed at the end of the entry:

I applied my lashes with my new Shu Uemura lash applicator.  I have been wearing my falsies with my fingers for years and years, that's how I started out, and it's what I am used to.. but when I used the applicator today, I found that there are certain advantages to using an applicator, even if you are already quite skilful/ used to your usual fingers.  For one thing, I felt like when I am holding the lashes with the applicator, I was able to really place the falsies close to the lids, and not really disturb the eyeliner and all. I was also able to adjust and bend the falsies according to how I want them to rest and stick to my lids.. so I felt like everything seemed more nimble and clean.  I think I might not be using the tool to its optimal potential though cos I am sure there's some way to hold it, and all... but in my own fumble and trial.. I think I might slowly convert to using the lash applicator.

    Pardon the wonky expresions.... :p

    All products used:

face - SR breathable tinted primer, Jouer Matte Tinted Moisturiser, Ettusais Mineral plus bb loose powder

concealer - NARS radiant creamy concealer (spots), GA Maestro Eraser for undereyes

eyes - NAKED 3 (used Limit on  the crease, Strange on browbone, Burnout on the eyelids, and Blackheart as a liner)
    * I just casually blended the colors today..so I guess the end result is just a mess of rosy brown shade.

lips - NARS Pure Matte lip pencil in Damned

cheeks - Clarins bronzer, MAC Comfort MSF (love this as a warm cheek color)

brows - Anastastia brow powder, MAC Beguile browset

hair - newly colored jet black

glimpse of nails - Chanel Rouge Noir

That's all and thanks for reading!

The Makeup Blogette's Top Picks 2013

Last year, I did a top 12 of 2012 (link here) and now is the time to do another one...everyone says how scary time flies, and I can't agree more.  Getting older, getting fatter (NOT going to happen anymore) and my blog has its share of highs this year.  I had the chance to attend more events, previews, parties, not to mention hosting my very own Christmas party with NARS just last week - the biggest high for me blog/makeup wise this year.  Also this year probably set a record in terms of blogsales organised, ending in the finale of a very successful makeup clearance sale back in Oct. Just think of all the goods and monetary transactions going on.  But attending events and organising sales are just part of the larger picture here...my love for makeup, my hobby, our hobby. Attending events for others might be a fashion show, shameless photo opportunities, but for me, it's like doing future makeup shopping, being informed of new stuff (so that even if BAs dunno anything about the latest summer collection, I ALREADY KNOW).  I get to check out what is coming out in the coming 2 -3 months, I start making mental list of what to buy, I can't wait to share such information & pictures with my friends, share with you the new stuff that's coming out.

I appreciate all the messages, discussions and feedback that I receive from everyone, though sometimes I don't get to reply to all comments.  Learning about makeup and beauty, playing with them, using them is always a fun journey and I am glad to be able to do it along with all my readers, long time friends and fellow makeup junkies.  As the year draws to an end... let's look forward to the exciting future! (oooo how cheesy I am.. lol)

So, this entry will consist of my top picks for the year - and and I try not to go too much into each category.  If you click on each product name, you will be directed to the feature/ review of that product.  I know such a list can be reductive, and I try out so many products this year... there are lots more which I can't possibly... not because they are not good (you will find a lot of positive reviews on the blog - I just don't believe in mentioning/ featuring stuff which I don't enjoy.  If you have seen it on the blog, 99% of the chance would that I enjoyed using them.

NOTE - you might realise I did not include any top BLUSH or BRONZER or HIGHLIGHTER in this list - that's cos... I can't pick any.  Of course I can ramble off a list of cheek stuff I like... but truth is, I rotate too many blushes to pick one or two (and not being fair to the others that I love and use).... and I always use the same HG bronzers for the past couple of years..and as for highlighters.. I don't use them everyday (I rather use a all over face finishing powder) so I can't pick.

    Makeup Base/ BB Cream

    MAQUiLLAGE Multi Base BB cream

I would lump all the bb creams, makeup base etc etc type of product in this category.  This year, I am impressed by MAQUiLLAGE Multi Base BB Cream - it evens out the skintone nicely, and provides a great base for your makeup.  It works well under both powder and liquid foundations.

    Powder Foundation

Clé de Peau BEAUTÉ brightening powder foundation

This is the BOMB of all powder foundations.  Pricey, yes.  Worth every penny, hell yeah.  I have made a huge dent in this, and I am glad I have a refill back up.  This is the only powder foundation this year (well, in many years) that has truly blew my mind - awful overused phrase... but true.

    Liquid Foundation

    Shu Uemura Lightbulb Foundation

I was impressed by this foundation on first use.  It delivers on finish, coverage and longetivity.  I don't use the sponge with it, and I personally didn't notice anything different.  It comes in many shades, so I am sure everyone can find her own shade!

    Lancôme Mat Miracle Foundation

If you want a long lasting matte foundation - you can't go wrong with the Lancome Mat Miracle.  It has a smooth finish that makes you look radiant without being shiny.

    Nars Creamy Radiant concealer
This is a very hyped product from NARS that totally lives up to the hype.  It has enough coverage, and is one of the few concealers I can use on both my spots and under my eyes.

    Suqqu Chiffon Feel Loose Powder

I love the slightly pink tone loose powder - it provides sheer coverage, so fine and sets my foundation beautifully for the whole day.

You can read all about my theory behind setting and finishing powders in this entry here.

This year has also seen the launch of several lipstick ranges from the various brands, and I am fortunate enough to be able to test out the whole color range of some of them.. and these are my absolute top picks.
Shiseido Perfect Rouge - BEAUTIFUL colors and formula.  I wore Showgirl quite often while I was in Japan.. long lasting and never drying.
NARS Satin Lip pencils got me and my girlfriends in a frenzy when they launched.  I have 6 or 7 out of the 12?  And I love all of them.  Color, ease of application and formula - won me over.
YSL Glossy Stain Rebel Nudes - a long lasting sheer stain sounds like an oxymoron, but you got to believe it.  I love the range of colors they brought out, and you need at least a couple in your collection.

    Shiseido Perfect Rouge

    NARS Satin Lip Pencils

    Lancôme Hypnôse Doll Eyes Palette

Lancome reformulated their eyeshadow palettes and each of the 24? palettes are amazingly pigmented, metallic, shimmery and just super intense.  I love all the neutrals and they are just fantastic.  And the packaging is sleek and innovative - the magnetic appliators are brilliant.

    Shiseido Brow Styling Compact

This year I started filling in my brows using brow powder and the Shiseido Brow styling compact is now a staple in my daily makeup routine.

    Burberry Oxblood

The packaging, the formula, and best of all the oolor - if there's a deep red you need, it will be Burberry Oxblood.

    Percy & Reed

I know I haven't actually featured any Percy and Reed products on the blog, but I have tried 4-5 products from them.. and every one did not disappoint me at all.  Their products for fine hair actually WORKS.  My fine and sometimes limp hair comes to life when I use their No Oil-Oil for fine hair, I love their TLC hair mask, and their dry hair conditioner is awesome.  And everything smells lovely... I just love the brand as a whole for their effective products!

    Skincare Breakthrough

Sulwhasoo's whitening skincare range - SNOWISE EX

Reviewed Sulwhasoo's whitening range at the start of this year, and I love every product that I got to try out.  I haven't had the need to re-purchase, as I am always trying out a new range every 2 - 3 months this year.. but the Snowise range is the most impressive and effective whitening/brightening range I have ever used.

    Skincare Discovery

    SkII Facial Treatment Essence

This is a surprising skincare discovery... I never thought I would be a SKII user.. I know they are wildly popular and there's a strong following, but yeah.. I never jump on the bandwagon.. until I tried the FTE on a whim lately.. and found myself loving it.  The rest is history.  A pity that I have given away several SKII products away before cos I never got to trying them out.  Now I am a convert.  Currently using the stempower cream as all.

    Makeup Brushes

This year I got to try out and also purchase makeup brushes... and I am impressed by our own homegrown brush brand, 13rushes.. I have reviewed their collection recently (click the links below).  For eye brushes, I have venture beyond my trusty MAC217 to find its equal and some superior counterparts in the Hakuhodo J-series brushes.  I don't do complicated eyework, so a somewhat dense yet fluffy brush is good enough for most of my eyeshadow application needs.

    Face - 13rushes

    Eyes - Hakuhodo J-series brushes

One of the highpoint this year was the awesome Makeup Sale that I got to organise together with my friend Pearl.  The turnout was a total pleasant surprise and I think everyone had a great time shopping our stash.

Another highpoint is the NARS Christmas Party - I got to know about it and started planning it with the NARS team while I was away in Japan.. and it's such an amazing opportunity to meet those who came.

I also enjoyed writing my piece on Instagram being the new Blog.. what are your thoughts on that?

Last but not least, ending this entry with LOTDs --

The blog is full of looks of the day (LOTDfeaturing new products, current faves and random posing... and here is a recap of my fave looks that I have posted this year - in chronological order:

21 Jan 2013  Lancome Color Design Palette in Bronze Armour

NARS x The Makeup Blogette Christmas Party [Photos]

Just a quick rundown of the party which I hosted with NARS!  So happy at the event, it was like over 2 hours of non stop shopping and chatting with all my girlfriends!

I hope I helped some of you to pick out some good items from NARS, and if you have photos to share from the event, feel free to email me!

Love the yummy cupcakes that bore my blog name, and the red lippy shaped sprinkles.. the attention to detail was just amazing (thanks Candice!) everyone who ate the cupcakes all said they were moist and not too sweet.  Awesome.

Some of you were asking me at the event, if there were going to be some makeup demo and all that... we didn't plan any games nor demo..it was really just an evening to mingle among makeup, food and drinks.  I did make a little speech (prolly sounded a little too nervous), and then for the rest of the evening, we just played with makeup.  It was really lovely and amazing to meet everyone who came to say hi and talked to me.

The shopping deals - and I think many of you scored some fantastic freebies - even I made my mom shop so I could get the notebook.. haha.

Among my recommendations, I think the top items were

    - bold lippies
    - bold blushes
    - translucent setting powder
    - concealer

a cheesey pic of me posing at the entrance  (and how cool issit that I got to keep the event placard?  Lol.. not that anyone has any use for it post event.. but nice momento for me).

in case you are wondering, I am wearing (all NARS) on my face

    - creamy radiant foundation, creamy radiant concealer, translucent pressed powder
    - Madly blush
    - Monchourie duo eyeshadow
    - Future Red lipstick

Just another heartfelt thank you to everyone who showed up!

and if you shared your loots on IG, please tag me and/or tag your pics with #narsmakeupblogette!

my mama's loots!  I told her to pick stuff, cos everything is on me!  (my secret agenda was to get that notebook! LOL)

After the event, I joined my girlfriends (Amy, Jerlaine & Kim)  for our Christmas dinner and gift exchange:

Lovely good food and even better company!  Always always fun to catch up with them!

That evening, Meryl and I had matchy Givenchy bags!  I bought this in Hong Kong last week. Love the in between size and leather.  Just my kind of everyday bag! LOVES!

Here's to more parties, and more makeup!  Happy Holidays everyone!

I am currently mentally planning my top of 2013 entry, I want it to be somewhat different....and hope to post it after Christmas.

    Thanks for reading!
