About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Cirque Polish in Tibetan Nights [Photos & Swatches]

Recently received this Cirque Polish in Tibetan Nights from Meimei Signatures (retail price S$17, 13.2ml).  If you aren't aware, Cirque nailpolish is one of many indie nailpolish brands that seems to be getting quite popular these days...

Some background information on Cirque (extracted from their website here)

Cirque is an artisanal line of hand-blended nail polish made in New York.  The name Cirque, meaning ring or circle, represents the color wheel and the endless color possibilities in the continuum.  Creator, Annie Pham, sought to develop colors that transcend those of conventional brands by experimenting with unique pigments and raw materials.  The debut collection, Dark Horse, is a 12-color arrangement that is diverse in its hues and finishes -- similar to the creative energy that abounds New York.

Cirque nail polish is B3 free, which means it does not contain toluene, formaldehyde and dibutyl phthalate. Each bottle holds .45 oz / 13.2 ml of product and is hand-mixed by batch using high quality ingredients such as cosmetic-grade pigments and glitterOrganic lavender and clary sage essential oils have been added to lend your hands a subtle scent after the polish dries.

    Introducing

    Tibetan Nights

A deep blue polish with micronic-sized glitter in a translucent finish

The bottle itself is square, and the brush is similar to those of Essie (smaller brushes, not the wide brushes like OPIs)

Because it is a translucent (or jelly?) in consistency, I have applied Estee Lauder Blue Dahlia thinly as a basecoat.  But this does not interfere with the translucent finish of Tibetan Nights.  The base color simply meant I don't have to apply 4-5 coats of the Cirque polish.

The glitter bits are subtle, and catches the light, and the translucent finish of the polish gives it a watercolor type of effect.

see the natural gradient of the color

lighter at the base, and appearing darker at the tips..this isn't intentional, but I thought it gives the shade some depth and mystery.

another angle to show the juicy jelly finish of Tibetan Nights

If you love starry dark shades, I think you will love Tibetan Nights.

Check out Meimei Signatures for more shades (including several other indie brand nailpolishes!) and to purchase.

Hope this has been helpful, and thank you for reading!

Giorgio Armani Lasting Satin Lip Color 508 Pink [Photos & Swatches]

    Hi hi!

This entry features the Giorgio Armani Lasting Satin Lip Color in the shade 508 Pink.  This is a light (note - not pale) pink shade that isn't too cool toned (quite neutral, I think), though it might look a little cool in the tube.  It is a creamy shade and does not contain no shimmer bits at all.  It is pretty wearable on my skintone, just giving it a wearable pink pop of colour.

If I remember correctly, this range of lipsticks retail for $44 at DFS Galleria, putting them in the same price point of Dior and Chanel lip products.

The texture is very smooth, and the color goes on opaque and even in two swipes across the lips. The lipstick itself is a little soft, I noticed the lipstick bullet being 'pushed' to the side of the inside because I applied it straight from the tube.  If you often use a lipstick to apply perhaps this may not be a problem.  Or maybe the weather is just too hot and making everything melt?

I really do like this range of lippies, I have swatched 102, a Beige shade on my lips a couple of weeks back...and it is still on my mind!  The lasting power is about 4 - 5 hours, a dinner, much yakking, drinking with a straw and a movie.  I don't find it drying on my lips, the lightweight texture makes it feel like I am not wearing a lipstick at all.

If you have the chance, do check out this range of lippies.  They are pretty awesome, and the color range is great too.  From nudes to reds and everything in between.

The packaging is very sleek and luxe.  The cover closes with a magentic snap once it aligns with the lipstick.  It feels solid and sturdy, and the slightly wider base means that the lipstick will stand nicely on your table without toppling over.

swatch on my hand looks slightly darker than the actual product

    swatch on my lips

you can see the soft texture and opaque color payoff

I used this lipstick in this LOTD.

Hope this has been useful, and thanks for reading!

    LOTD: Mainly Giorgio Armani

    Hi hi!

A LOTD entry where I try to stick to mainly just one brand.  Let's not even call it a series, because who knows how long I can keep this up... but anyway, I was taking pictures of a bunch of new products today, and I thought it would be a good idea to slap them on my face as I go along, and then I can properly store things away and/or put them into the rotation for review purposes.

So, anyway, I think I have enough products from Giorgio Armani to do a full face makeup, well, I have a couple of the foundations, one blush, and a whole stash of eyes to kill intense, but I recently got a lipstick, and their new Maestro foundation (to be released this Oct)..so here we are.   Just some initial impressions, not a real review yet.

I am using a couple of the new ETKs I bought, and these don't disappoint at all.  They seem to be more glittery shiny than the older ones, but the texture is just as smooth, and easy to use.

Here are the products I used:

Base - GA UV Master Primer, GA Maestro Fusion Makeup (shade 04)

Cheeks - GA Sheer Blush (05), GA Micro Fil loose powder (used as cheek highlight)

Eyes - GA ETKs in 24 (outer corner) and 27  (all over the lids)

Liners - Solone black liner, Heavy Rotation liquid liner

    Lips - Rouge D'Armani 508

The Maestro foundation is really quite something.  In terms of texture, it is one of the most luxurious ever.  I used my fingers to apply the foundation, as I often do when I am trying out a new foundation because I want to have a good idea of the actual consistency and blendabilty of the foundation.  It feels like I am not applying makeup on my face.  It feels like I am applying some kind of a ultra moisturising face cream or serum on my skin.  The feeling is really quite something.... when I swatched it on my hand, I could only tell that it is very liquidy and smooth.  But when it is applied to your skin, it's kind of OMG.

I tried to build up coverage on areas where I want more coverage - the coverage of this foundation is quite light.  It is probably better for days when you know your skin looks good, and you don't need a lot of coverage.  The finish is a bit dewy and very smooth.  I didn't feel like I want to set the foundation with powder.. (and I didn't for this set of pictures - I eventually did set with some powder before I left the house).

I shall use this foundation (along with the GA primer) for a couple more weeks, and give you my final review.

here's how the foundation looks like

    without any concealer

and you can see some of the marks on my forehead

and on my nails, I used Chanel Fall 2012 nailpolish in the shade Vertigo.  I will feature this nail polish in a later entry.

My recent makeup faves - drawing my brows real naturally and thick.   I havent had it properly trimmed in ages, but I have gotten the hang of filling in my brows quite 'full'.  That and I love wearing grey lenses.

Chanel Vertigo on my finger nails.  This I will also properly feature in another entry.

a quick pic of my and the gf's LOTD

the natural daylight made our faces look super flawless

she is wearing Teint Miracle liquid foundation, and I am wearing GA Maestro fusion makeup

That's all, and thanks for reading!
