About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

    Random Chat [May 2012]

A quick round-up of stuff which I have been loving lately.  This month is really all about skin pampering, and keeping my makeup to a quick & easy minimum (because I was really busy for a major part of May and didn't have time to fuss with makeup) and really just taking care of my body.

Let's start with some makeup items -

    Eyeshadows I love [pictured above]

MUFE Aqua Creams #14 and #15

    Le Metier de Beaute Corinthian

    MAC Woodwinked

    NARS Lhasa  (not pictured)

All these eyeshadows are superbly pigmented, and totally not 'some boring brown or taupes' - in my opinion anyway... they are easy to use, and really makes it look like you are using more than just one color on your lids.  These colours naturally enhance your eyes (well, most of the time I am wearing grey lens) and because of how I slap them on my lids and blend up to my crease, my eyes look bigger too.

    Face stuff I love:

Soleil Tan de Chanel 547 Bronzing Rose (from 2011 Summer collection)

Perfection Lumiere (samples in shade 10 and 20)

Natural Finish Loose Powder 10 Limpide (not pictured)

It seems to be all CHANEL face products this month.. with my Chanel foundation sampling going on (I still rotate a few other foundations but I am paying special attention to these samples to make or break any potential purchases).  The final verdict on Perfection Lumiere - I am definitely buying it, sooner or later - and in the shade 10.  While 20 is also a match for me, I think 10 is a better match and gives my skin that subtle brightening appearance.  Everytime I try it out, I am impressed by the finish, the lasting power and as a bonus I love the scent, and it didn't break me out.

Another CHANEL item I have been loving (which is not pictured) is the Natural Finish Loose Powder - it is finely milled, sets my foundation, and looks good the whole darn day, sweat and humidity and all. The shade I am using is 10 Limpide.

I have also been using the Bronze Rose - in my opinion, the 2011 summer bronzers are prettier and more user friendly  than the 2012 summer bronzers - I am glad I gave them a miss.  I love the 4 distinct bars of colors, I like to use either my Chanel kabuki brush to dust it on my face and cheeks, or use my MAC 168 to apply the product.  I love that I can use this bronzer as a blush, bronzer, and overall face enhancing powder.  It is not shimmery, and imparts a nice glow that lasts the whole day too.

    Brows!

Bobbi Brown natural brow shaper 03

I have been on the lookout for a new brow shaper, because my Mac Browset in MINK has been drying out (after 2+ years! and it is LE, so I didn't have a backup).  And I am happy to find a new brow shaper that is dark ashy brown in tone which is NOT shimmery.  The Japanese brand of brow shapers are usually too 'golden' and doesn't suit my coloring at all.  This retails for $42, which is a little pricey, but it is a staple in my makeup routine, and one that will last me a long time to come.

    Skincare products I love!

Lancome Genefique & Visionaire * HOLY GRAIL * serum combination

VICHY Bi-White Reveal Night Cream (not pictured, completely used up)

I realised that my skin is in its best overall condition when I use the Lancome power serum combination.  I think that it addresses all my skincare concerns at the same time, even out skintone, minimize pores, anti-aging, just overall skin condition improvement.  I think I never want to run out of this pair of goodies.  There will be times I venture out to other routines due to review, and my own curiosity, but if I want to stabilise my skin condition, this is it.

I am not so fussy about day & night moisturisers, I just prefer something that is thick and hydrating enough, especially for night time.  The VICHY night cream is quite good, it smells awesome, and I really enjoyed using it.  (retails for $79, but I bought it during the Watsons sale, and got 30% discount).

    Eye Creams Addiction

    Embryolisse Eye Contour Care

    Clarins Defining Eye Lift serum

Shiseido White Lucent Brightening Eye Treatment

I am a very faithful eyecream user - for the past 2 or 3 years at least - I will feel weird if I don't use any eyecreams, like the eye area will be too dry, or lines will appear overnight.   I still have two Origins eyecream which I have in my drawers that I will eventually start using... and I will be able to give you updates on those.

So far, I use the Embryolisse Eye Contour Care in the daytime, it is a lightweight great basic eyecream.   I sometimes use the Clarins Defining Eye Lift serum underneath - I don't notice any significant effect with this serum, but I will use it anyway as an added preventive measure.

I bought the Shiseido White Lucent Brightening Eye treatment during the recent Shiseido sale.  It might be an older formula which is being phased out, because I know they have a new White Lucent eye cream out.  But regardless, I am surprised that this is such a rich thick cream since the rest of the Shiseido White Lucent range is quite lightweight.   So I use this eye cream at night.

I have recently received a couple of eye creams for trial and consideration lately, and can't wait to feature them soon!

Samples that are tempting me to make the full sized purchase!

Caudalie Vinoperfect Day Perfecting Fluid with SPF15

    KENZOki Creamy-White Skin Lightener

The Caudalie day cream is a tinted product, and almost feels like a makeup base.  I am not too sure of the effects, but I do like the texture and how it feels on my skin. I think it is a little pricey though... so I don't think I will run out to buy this soon, until I have used up all my existing day cream type of products.  But this is definitely on my mind.

The KENZOki creamy-white skin lightener --- I use this a few times at night, it smells awesome, and the next day, my skin is smooth, and firm.  LOVES. Along with Sisley, these are the 2 brands that I am slowly being introduced to, and curious to try out.

    Get OILY!

Jo Malone Nectarine Blossom & Honey Bath Oil

Clarins Blue Orchid Face Treatment Oil (sample)

Josie Maran Organic Argan Oil Moisturiser (sample)

    Bio-Oil

The Body Shop Beautifying Oil (dry oil for face, hair, body) Strawberry, Shea flavours

I never thought that I would love using OILS on my face and body. But these whole range of oil products are making me think twice.  For one thing, OILS are more moisturising than regular CREAMS.  This is my theory - OILS are concentrated, and seem to have a more theapeutic effect, the scent, the texture is just more luxurious.  Thanks to the new formulation of these oil products, they are light, and easily absorbed - there is no slicky icky sticky after feeling at all.

Overall, I love the nourishing qualities of these oils, and if in the past, if you tell me to slather oil on my face and body, I would be thinking, are you sure?  But now, I really enjoy using them.  My sis - Meryl who has drier skin swears by these oils (especially the Clarins ones) to keep her skin smooth and moisturised the whole time.

I love the JM bath oil when I just showered, and I slather this on damp skin.  Then I smell extra good, and my skin is very soft for the whole day.

I love the Clarins face treatment oil to give my skin an extra boost of hydration once a week.  The tiny sample will last me a long time.  I think I might eventually make a full size purchase soon.  I also have a couple of the Clarins body treatment oils, and I like to rub these on my calves before I go to sleep at night.

I love the BIO-OIL for fading the little scars on my calves, and softening the dryer skin there too.  This was given to me by the company, and I have never gotten to really featuring it, but if you want an affordable oil treatment product, this really works, and a little goes a long way.  I do recommend the BIO-OIL.

I tried the Josie Maran Argan oil, it is very rich, and while many people like to use it on their hair, I think I prefer to use it on my skin - it is too rich for my hair, and weigh it down.  I heard that it is out at our Sephora already?  I am keen to try out more products - I got my deluxe sized samples from my Sephora purchases in the US last year (choked up a huge amount of Beauty Insider points!).

Finally The Body Shop beautifying oil - these are sent to me - I haven't got to trying them yet, but I will start this week.  I tried it once for the first time last night, it is very lightweight, and does not leave any sticky oily feeling.

    Get RUNNING

I think I have mentioned in my April random chat that I started gymming, and I am happy to report that the whole month of May I have been gymming almost everyday.  For about an hour at the gym I am doing cardio exercises, and while I know it takes time for significant weight loss to be seen, I can already feel my limbs getting slightly more toned, and I just feel better inside out.  I don't really go out of my way to diet (that's impossible, and too sad) but I am very happy to make this whole gym thing a daily habit.  I no longer think it is a 'chore' to pack my gym bag, and go to the gym - it is just an everyday thing I need to do for myself.

    MAKEUP PORN

See the goodies up there? My first major Burberry and Dolce & Gabanna loots!  I got to sit myself down, take proper pictures, swatch them before I can start using them. Hopefully I get to do all that good stuff this coming week.  That plus a small carton of new products which I need to get through and sort out, and perhaps get to share with you soon.

I am excited to leave for TW with my gfs in two weeks!  Yup, we can't wait - #twfrenzy!

I hope this rambly entry had been useful, and thank you very much for reading.  If there are any questions about the products I mentioned, please leave them in the comments below.  :)

We Went GAGA [over a few things]

Last week, my whole bunch of buddies and I went to the Lady Gaga concert at the Singapore Indoor Stadium (SIS).  We had bought  the tickets the day they were available for sale, there was such a frenzy, everything was sold out,  more shows added, well, it was just kind of crazy.  We ended up with the cheapest tickets available, and literally sat all the way at the top of the SIS.  I think the organisers had planned for a 3 day stint the whole time - but only revealed the second and third show when the first show was sold out in what, 2 hours? and caused a SISTIC system melt-down?

Regardless, the show was a blast, it was a full-length concert as compared to her informal gig I went to 2 or 3 years back when she only had one album out then.  Elaborate sets, costumes, audience bantering --- everything --- Lady Gaga is indeed a consummate performer, and she had the audience hanging on to her every word and movement.

    Totally enjoyed ourselves.

My very quick LOTD for the night:

can't recall the foundation I was wearing already, but here's what else I had on my face

red lipstick - Chanel Rouge Coco Cambon

eyeshadow - Le Metier de Beaute Corinthian eyeshadow

cheeks - Nars Luster (I think so, or else it would be a Chanel Bronze Rose)

My hair was quite messy, because I was trying to section my hair and curl it in a very systematic way, but half way through, the sections got loose, and got mixed with the hair that's already curled.  Duh.  So I ended up grabbing whichever sections I could and curl them anyway.  Tip to myself: try not to curl freshly washed hair - it gets straightened out faster.  Still, the wavy-ness lasted the night, and I really think I should do it more often.

sidenote: I am really loving my long long hair!  I have been putting off the trimming of my hair (except for my fringe) for more than half a year and I am just trying to grow it out as long as I could without the ends looking limp.

quick snapshot I took with my i-phone

cropped and added a color filter which I later posted on my instagram

Besides Lady Gaga... this Zara black tweed blazer got me all frenzied too... it was love at first try.  The blazer fitted me perfectly, length was great , shoulder fitted me, and it has a 'make me look 5kg lighter' look.  So, I had to have it... and after sleeping on it, I went back to make the purchase the following day.

Here are some snapshots I took while trying out the blazer.  It is very lightly lined with chiffon inside, and very lightweight, so it would be great for air-conditioned places...and yet won't make me look ridiculous if I had to head out in the hot sun.

a couple more snapshots from the ZARA website,

and how I paired it whilst trying it out again at the store a second time

(with a neon yellow tunic tank - love how the long tank pops out at the hem)

    LOVES

and I saw this Bershka zebra print scarf, super cute, and it is super big, and I love the bright yellow background.

so, it has to come home with me. :)

What made you go gaga lately?

    Thanks for reading!

NEW Ettusais Oil Block Goodies & UV Aqua Splash

This summer, Ettusais releases 3 new products to battle the heat and keep us cool and pretty throughout the day.

Firstly, we have the Ettusais Aqua Splash UV SPF25 PA+++  [40ml, S$29]

This makes sunblock touch up possible - it is a sunscreen mist that is moisturising and helps to prevent shine, without messing up makeup.

There is no white cast to the mist, and it dries clear.  There is no sticky afterfeel (and so true, because I have tested it on my face and hands).

This is due to new technology which is able to emulsify UV protection products into a clear liquid.  The UV spray contains moisturising ingredients (hyaluronic acid, rosemary extract) and minerals (magnesium, postassium) to help prevent skin roughness caused by UV rays.

The spray can also be used as a makeup base, which will enhance the adhesion of foundation.  It also blocks sebum, and prevents large pores - the chamomile extract gives an astringent effect and inhibits excess sebum production.  Rosemary also prevent the festering of bacteria in the skin.  The sebum balancing ingredient also prevent enlarged pores.

The spray also smells of a faint floral scent - relaxing effect, no icky sun-block smell at all.

The UV spray has a non-comedogenic formula, and is dermatologist tested, colorant free, gentle on the skin, and uses 100% purified water.

Next, we have the Ettusais oil block jelly - a limited edition release - it is a special jelly that keeps shine and pores hidden.

Ettusais Oil Block Jelly [15g S$27]

It blots away shine, and prevent the look of oily excess sebum with Vitamin B6, an astringent agent.  It also blots away shine with Sebum Absorbing Powder.  The oil block jelly also hides pores, with the light reflecting Pore Shadow Powder, and prevents large pores and acne with Loquant Leaf Extract.  The oil block jelly is also acne friendly - because it is a gentle formulation, oil free, fragrance free, colorant free, and contains 100% refined water.  It can be used before or after makeup.  If you are using this as a touch up, blot the face with paper before applying.

And last but not least, we have the Ettusais Aqua Splash OB - which is an oil-blotting paper and astringent lotion in ONE product.  It is a powder in mist that fixes fading makeup by blotting away oil and touching up with just a spritz.

Ettusais Aqua Splash OB [40ml, S$29]

This is a new and improved formula:

    1. Micro powder for a finer makeup finish
    2. Astringent Effect (rosemary extract) - also good for preventing the formation and reproduction of bacteria on the skin
    3. Refreshing sensation and grapefruit scent
    4. Prevents enlarged pores (Sebum Balancing Ingredient) - Glycylgycine - which blocks unsaturated fatty acids which is the cause of open pores

Shake the container well before use, to mix the powder into the mist.

I hope you find this sharing helpful.  I will try to follow up with a review entry soon enough.

    NEW Clarins Total Cleansing Oil

Available in June 2012, $50 each.

“Cleansing is the most frequent, most repeated skin care step which influences the effectiveness of products applied afterwards.”

    Jacques Courtin-Clarins, Clarins founder.

Make-up has changed and so has make-up removal

Long-hold foundations, new make-up rich in coloured pigments and fine pearl, mineral sunscreens: today’s beauty products are increasingly long-wearing. Cleansing, the essential beauty step according to Clarins, must keep up with these cosmetic advances.

Today, Clarins launches Total Cleansing Oil, an innovation resulting from three areas of expertise:

    • Cleansing expertise

Clarins has always adapted its cleansers to all skin types and all needs, thanks to a very wide product range.

    • Skin care using oils since 1965

Clarins was a forerunner by creating its 100% Plant Oils

    • The best plant extracts

Rigorously selected and analyzed to obtain their most precious elements.

An exceptional formula designed for Asian women

    Total cleansing

Clarins has taken into account the changes in make-up and UV protection products and created a high-performance, high-tolerance cleanser which eliminates even the most resistant make-up.

The combination of two organic plant oils:

    perilla oil and olive oil

One is from Asia, the other from Mediterranean Europe. Both are widely recognized since Antiquity for their cosmetic properties, antioxidant virtues and high content of essential fatty acids. By combining these two 100% organic oils, Clarins Research offers Asian women the most effective cleanser, in perfect affinity with the skin. The skin is perfectly cleansed and clean, without being aggressed.

    A very high-performance cleanser

    The comfort of an oil

Very fine, with a wonderful feel, Total Cleansing Oil glides into every corner of the skin’s micro-relief. Its high-tech oil texture is specially designed to quickly dissolve all oily residues and impurities. It effectively traps even the most adherent particles which resist classic cleansers.

    The fresh feel of water

Then on contact with water, the oil transforms into a fresh, milky emulsion which carries away all traces of make-up, even waterproof formulas, and pollution and anti-UV sunscreens. Very easy to rinse off, it leaves no oily traces on the skin.

    Unrivalled beauty result

Thanks to Total Cleansing Oil, skin is quickly and easily fresh and perfectly clean again, while remaining supple. It is now ready to fully benefit from skin care products applied afterwards.

    Extremely gentle

The skin’s hydrolipidic film is protected

Traditionally, olive oil was used in the Mediterranean on the fine, fragile skin of newborns. In the formula of Total Cleansing Oil, the combination of olive oil and perilla oil rich in essential fatty acids preserves the skin’s hydrolipidic film. There is no feeling of tightness but instant softness and comfort.

    The Clarins Cleansing Method

Faithful to its philosophy, Clarins recommends a Cleansing Method which is easy to carry out and combines effectiveness and sensoriality on application.

I hope you find this sharing helpful.  I will try to follow up with a review entry soon enough.
