About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

No ads, no paid links etc please.  I am in charge of all content and pictures here.

I am not a makeup artist, nor do I have any professional training in makeup.

First Look at Dior Fall 2012 Vernis 615 Bengale & 605 Amazonia

    Hi!

Featuring two nail polisj from Dior's 2012 Fall makeup collection, which I had earlier blogged about here and this type of khaki creamy shades are right up my alley.

The two shades Bengale and Amazonia are both rich hues of jungle earthy tones, one is a rich intense cream brown, and the other a deep olive green. Of the two, Bengale is thicker and almost a one-coater, while Amazonia needs 2 even coats to be completely opaque.  In the shade, both look much deeper than they appear in the bottle, however in sunlight, they both look ultra glossy, and sleek.

I love both shades, and if you like something unique, and different from the usual fall shades (think deep reds) then you will love these two shades.

I will be following up this entry with a comparison entry, notably the Chanel Les Khakis collection - even though it's a collection for 2 years back, I think I would like to compare them anyway, but just by looking the Dior shades are deeper in tone.

Dior polishes all have a very smooth consistency, and the unique brush meant that I only need to sweep it once down my nail to reach the entire surface, and Dior polishes normally last a good 5 days to 1 week of no chip wear.

Meanwhile, enjoy the photos and swatches.

I hope this has been helpful, and thank you for reading!

Featured Dior products were given to me for consideration.

Thakoon for NARS: Koliary & Anardana [Photos & Swatches]

I purchased two shades from the NARS Thakoon collection.  I didn't expect to come arcoss them when I was in TW, so when the BA brought out the collection for me, I was like wow, I want!  I had vaguely remember the shades which are the most well reviewed, and I went with those.  Besides the other shades aren't very much unique in my stash.

I chose Koliary, a brilliant shade of warm rich blue, and Anardana, a rich bright pink that reminds me a little like a OCC liptar (Anime, or Paegant).

Here are the two gorgeous shades.

They are one-coaters, in the case of Anardana, I used only one coat, and for Koliary, I used two coats to make the overall look more even.

Koliary is just brilliant.  It POPS! I love love this blue, and it doesn't seem to stain, which is a bonus.

I love how rich this pink is.

It is quite a neutral toned pink, despite the brightness, and both shades make my skin look like it  has a healthy tan going on.

    some comparisons, no dupes though.

more comparisons with a couple of Dior pinks

Overall, I love both shades, and I am glad I had the chance to pick them up.

Hope these swatches have been helpful, and thanks for looking!

Introducing ZALORA.SG & Special Discount Code for you!

    Hello!

Earlier this week, I had the chance to meet up with Zalora's marketing team, and learn more about Zalora.Sg, which is Singapore's newest and largest online fashion destination.  Zalora debutted in Feb 2012, and offers products across all categories for both men and women.  I learned about this latest online shopping destination, and also got to play around with products from some of the exclusive beauty brands that are available at Zalora.sg.

The site, if you are already not familiar with it, is very clean, and easy to navigate.  You can browse products via various catagories (type, price point, brands, promotions etc).  I like that being a locally based site means shipping is FREE, and you have the option of paying cash on delivery when your order arrives within 1 or 2 days.

With its ever-expanding portfolio of over 300 international and local fashion brands, Zalora's venture into beauty with a well-curated range of beauty products from exclusive cult brands to scientifically innovative, high-end beauty products, marks its vision to revolutionise Singapore's online retail landscape as the island's one-stop fashion and beauty trove.

Some exclusive brands which you can only find at Zalora.sg:

Black Chicken Remedies, Gorgeous Cosmetics, to High-Tech Cosmetics....

    Gorgeous Cosmetics

Gorgeous Cosmetics is helmed by award-winning makeup artist and hairdresser, David McConnell, and is backed by over 10 years of research and development to meticulously engineer a full premium cosmetic range.  Formerly the best-kept secret of Australia's most popular makeup artist, celebrities and beauty queens, Gorgeous Cosmetics is now gaining a wider following for its well-reviewed product range.  Some of its most popular products include the Base Perfect Liquid Foundation, which contains light-diffusing pigments and special silicones to deliver that flawless finish, and their revolutionary iINK Liquid Eye Pencil, which glides like gel and sets to a smudge proof, intense color for a dramatic look.

and also brands which we can find in stores and other local online retailers such as:

Becca Cosmetics, MOR Cosmetics, Nail Rock, China Glaze, Essie and Paper Self

I couldn't help but took pictures of some of the Gorgeous Cosmetics palettes and blushes, the quality is pretty amazing, the foundations I tried felt extremely soft and velvety.  I checked the prices at the site, they are really reasonable (in the MAC range or slightly lower), and there is special 10% discount code for you, if you are going to buy anything from the store.

Here are some pictures [taken with my iphone]

I think in the past 2 years alone, we have benefitted from the sheer variety and choices of shopping locations (both physically and virtually) brands that were previously elusive to us, are now readily available.  And that's a good thing, if you are constantly on the lookout for new brands, cult brands, or simply sick of what the department stores have to offer.

I also have on hand a few products which were provided to me for consideration, which I will showcase them in a later entry.

I do want to share with you the discount code asap, so you can go over and start shopping immediately.

    code: SOPHIANGfan
10% discount, valid till 10 July
    (not valid on discounted items)

I hope this sharing has been helpful, and thank you for reading!

    Our Awesome Week in Taipei!

Work started almost immediately after I got back from my TW trip, and I haven't been able to properly blog and post this entry up til now.  Even then, it took me quite a bit of time to select the pictures, sort them out, and all that.  I am glad for my long weekend, just to catch a breather, catch up on some rest, and also update the blog with lots of exciting entries (I hope).

I went to Taipei with Kimberly, Jerlaine and Amy.  We had planned the trip quite sometime back (via Jetstar), and stayed in Wonstar hotel, which is very central, and offers plenty of dining and shopping opportunities.  This is our second time travelling together (the last time was back in September, where we went to KL for the weekend).  Jerlaine knew the city pretty well, and taking into account all of our 'priorities' she managed to plan a fantastic intinerary.  There was plenty of time for sight-seeing, shopping, and eating.  When it comes to food, we would share smaller portions throughout the day, so as to make full use of our 'stomach space' and try out whatever we love to eat without feeling too full.

We had fantastic steamboat (buffet style, near our hotel), and even more fantastic giant pieces of sushi and sashimi.  Eating isn't very expensive in Taipei, and you get quality local food. Usually our day starts around 10 (after we showered and did our makeup), and we would conquer a place of interest, or to hunt down a specific shop.  Then we would roam around a mall, do some shopping, find a cafe, have some drinks, venture into random shops... and when our shopping gets too much to take, we would cab back to our hotel, dump our bags, rest for a bit, and head out in the evening for night market & dinner, or night market and & supper.

I know that Taipei is an extremely popular holiday location among Singaporeans (we could hear them everywhere we go), but I have never been there. It is definitely a place I would want to go back again and again, I think of it as a larger version of Hong Kong, more 'user-friendly' than Japan because we speak their language.  The Taiwanese are generally friendly, warm and helpful. I think my spoken Mandarin has even improved after this trip!

This trip has been totally nothing but lots of fun moments, and we were very 'cooperative' the whole trip, being patient, understanding, and willing to try out new things. Travelling with 3 other like-minded girls also meant that we didn't get sick of going into almost every makeup store, shopping mall, eating joints just to browse, shop, swatch and just soak in the atmosphere.  There are lots of priceless moments throughout the trip, and it's impossible for me to list down everything here.. so I hope you enjoy the pictures (I realise we didn't take much, because half the time, we took lots of pictures on our own iphones, and the other half of the time, it was raining quite heavily and it wasn't convenient to whip out my camera).

Getting ready every morning is a fun ritual, as we have the Taiwanese talkshows playing on the TV, we switched up our makeup items with one another, and did our makeup and hair in the same room.  At the end of each day, we have our nightly de-briefing sessions, planning and confirming the plans for the following day, followed by admiring our daily loots, and lots of girly talk!  We didn't sleep til around 2am every night, groaning about our tired legs, but since we are on vacation, we wake up the next morning full of energy to enjoy the city.  It was just awesome.

We have been spamming our instragram feed with our live updates from Taipei, so if you are following us in IG, you would have seen all our foodporn pictures and shopping along the way.  You can search on instagram the hashtag #twfrenzy, or #twfrenzy0612 for a collective photostream of the whole trip - from our pre-holiday Gelish manicure, our luggage packing, our food, our hotel and all that good stuff.

I couldn't have asked for better travel companions - and we were saying our monthly JB trips have 'conditioned' us to be quite good travel-mates to one another!

I hope you enjoy this photo-gallery, and for details on the exact locations we went to, you can see our photos on instagram, most of them are appropriately geo-tagged with the locations and maps.   I will also be posting separate haul entries featuring the stuff which I bought in Taipei, some of the have already been posted, so there will be more little stories in those entries.

    Thanks for reading!

Nails Story: Creamy & Glittery Pastel Green

    Hi hi!

This is another TW related haul entry.. we spent one of the days at this nail supplies store (it's pretty out of the way, and not exactly a normal retail shop, so I shan't even go into the details of the what and where of the place).  Kim wanted to stock up on her nail biz essentials, and for the rest of us who tagged along, it was another time for us to check out the endless, and I really mean endless rows and rows of glitters (which you can use to make glitter nail polishes), nail stickers (the designs and range is mind-boogling), and also nail embelishments and studs etc etc...  We also took the chance to make a few nail polish purchases, because they were selling TINS nail polishes for quite cheap (think S$11 a bottle).

I chanced about this no brand glitter nail polish, simply because the color combo of this bottle really attracted me.  There are small glitter bits and the main bigger bits are a light pink and light green foil shades.  I thought they were a sweet combo and something different from the usual holographic/ silver/ brighter shades of glitter.

I used it this week, pairing the glitter polish with Essie's Navigate Her, which matches the green glitter bits in the polish.

I really don't know the brand name of the polish... some of you were asking  me on instagram... sorry!

    Photos & swatches

I also bought 2 packets of nail sticks, because while Kim was at the cashier, I was just looking at the stuff she bought, and I thought, wow these stickers look super cute, and after Kim gave me some ideas for future nail art designs, I caved and bought them.  They aren't exactly cheap, but Kim said the quality is really good, because these don't shrivel and curl up.

the camelia flower motif is so very chanel-nesque!

that's all, and thanks for reading!

Solone Gel Like Smoody Pencils [Photos & Swatches]

One of the 2819219 things that got us in a frenzy in TW was the Solone Gel Like Smoody Pencils - these are available at the makeup store called 'Momo' which we found one nearby our hotel area.   They retail for NTD399 for a pair and among the four of us, we probably hauled back home 30+ of them.  I got about 15 pencils, many of which I gifted to my friends and sister.  I kept these four for myself.

Kimberly and I tested these liners whilst we were still in TW, and when they worked out well, we went back for more, more, more.  The pencils swatched very creamy and smooth, despite the glitter bits.  There are about 10 colors in the range, some more glittery, some are more of a metallic sheen.  Once they set, they are really budge proof and water proof.  I wore them one day (without any falsies, because falsies tend to help prevent liners from smudging in my experience) and the weather was humid and sticky in TW that evening.  But the black one which I used, didn't smudge and stay on pretty well.  That convinced me to go back the second time to MOMO and bought more so I could give away more more more to my friends, and picked up a couple more for myself.

The pencils come with a smudger sponge tip end, and the whole packaging is sleek and sturdy.

    swatches

you can see the pretty shimmers in this picture

check out Red Wine!   That's my absolute fave!

Amazing quality product, and do grab them if you have the chance to.

Solone also makes several range of liners, and some cream shadows, very interesting products.

But I 'controlled' myself, and only bought these Smoody Pencils.

That's all, and thanks for looking!

Two New Jo Malone Cologne [Pomegranate Noir, Amber & Lavender ]

I am slowly accumulating a sizeable stash of the Jo Malone scents.  And I think, I prefer the permanent range, and collecting them to be layer with one another.  When my colleague went to London recently, I got her to help  me get two scents to add to my collection - both happened to be rather masculine woody spicy types.  I will be including the scent description which helped me to make the purchase in the rest of the entry.

p/s Jo Malone products are the cheapest at Heathrow Airport.  These two items cost me a total of S$177 versus the S$260+ I would have to pay in our local JM store. Amazing!

My current fave is the Amber & Lavender - it is more of a masculine scent, but the tinge of fresh lavender note makes it unisex enough for me, and it smells very fresh and clean, yet with the woody amber showing through.  I like to layer this with Vanilla & Anise, and together they make a warm yet spicy floral scent.  It is difficult to describe exactly, and I shan't even to attempt, but I love the end results.  It's very unique, and just so chic.

The sensuality of a daring red dress. Ruby-rich juices of pomegranate, raspberry and plum are spiked with pink pepper and laced with Casablanca lily and spicy woods. A dark and enigmatic fragrance.

    Pomegranate Noir Tasting Notes

    Top Note: Pomegranate
Contemporary and imaginative, this super-fruit sets the scene with a delicate compote of sweet and sour red fruits overlaid with a twist of exotic pink pepper warmth.

    Heart Note: Casablanca Lily
The heady, sweet scent is powerful and decisive, romantic and purposeful. This passionate femme fatale could easily dominate and take centre stage, but the final ingredient is determined to be masterful.

    Base Note: Guaiacwood
This sophisticated woody note blended with clove and cinnamon is layered with a charred smokiness that hints at log fires. Enduring and enveloping, this accord envelops the senses.

recommended for a warm pairing/ layering,

Amber & Lavender deepens with a clean masculine accent -- and this is the next scent I chose.

Classic male perfumery, refined. French lavender and petitgrain bring a fresh luminosity to precious amber. Cultivated and cosmopolitan.

    Amber & Lavender Tasting Notes

    Top Note: Petitgrain
Derived from the green twigs and fresh leaves of the bitter orange tree, petitgrain opens with perky, aromatic orange notes given a green-ish twist with a suggestion of a dew-soaked meadow.

    Heart Note: French Lavender
A legendary fragrance, lavender is assertive and enduring. Deeply floral but not sweet, cleansing, uplifting, regenerating.

    Base Note: Amber
Amber's grown up, musky personality adds gravitas and sweetly smoky, resinous layers to the lively lavender and bitter-sweet petitgrain. A unique, innovative association with a lingering warmth and feel-good factor.

recommended for a warm pairing/ layering,

Nutmeg & Ginger warms with a spicy vibrancy -- which I already own and is one of my faves.

To see an overview of my fave JM combinations, click on this entry

JM is notoriously overpriced in Singapore, so if you travel to US, HK, or come across them at the Bangkok Airport duty free, stock up! :)

    Thank you for reading!

1028 Brownie Eyes Palette [Photos & Swatches]

This entry features the 1028 brand Brownie Eyes palette which I bought during my Taipei trip.  The brand is available at most, if not all Watsons in TW.

For those who don't know, '1028' is a makeup label created by Taiwanese makeup guru *Xiao Kai* - and I have the base makeup (consisting of liquid foundation and loose powder).  If you are acquainted with Taiwanese beauty products, the art of flawless skin, and eye enhancing makeup application are usually the key points, so you know you are in good hands when you are looking for great foundations, and also eye color products.  When we were in Taipei, and browsed and shopped the beauty stores daily, we didn't come across this palette til on the second last day, we were making our rounds at Watsons, and Jerl & Kim spotted this palette (which was probably just released that day, everything was fully stocked), and yelled for Amy and I to go check out.  3 minutes later, we all bought one or two of this palette each, all but wiping out the shelf at that Watsons.

It costs less than S$20 each, and consists of 6 beautiful neutral earthy tone eyeshadows, each 2.1g.  The palette comes without a mirror, which makes it lightweight.  Be careful if you are going to pop this palette in your bag, because the closing isn't very tight, and it might just pop open, and you end up with nicked eyeshadows.  The packaging is quite sleek, and reminds me of one of my smaller Urban Decay eyeshadow palettes.

There is a matte bone shade, a pale shimmery shade, a light brown metallic, one olive, warm medium brown and lastly a dark brown.  All the shades are equally pigmented, and very smooth.  A few shades are slightly powdery, so be sure to tap off any excess powder to avoid fallout.  It's a versatile palette, and if you are a neutral eyeshadow lover like me, you would love this palette.

    some swatches in progress

    okay, the actual swatches

    no base used at all

    I love this palette!

    Thanks for looking!
