About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

No ads, no paid links etc please.  I am in charge of all content and pictures here.

I am not a makeup artist, nor do I have any professional training in makeup.

    The Rose Gold Ring

    Hi!

We were at Isetan Orchard over the weekend - and there is this stall selling 'Made in Korea' accessories - and the rings, this ring - stood out to me.  And totally won Jerlaine and I over.  We bought the same ring... it is a delicate yet sturdy 'rose gold' color/ plated ring... and it kind of looks like a rope, a piece of string tied into a bow.  And that there is a little bit of bling just at the corner of the bow, adding a girly touch of detail.

    How much?  $16

It comes in silver and gold too.  But you know I have a penchant for rose gold accessories.  So rose gold it must be.

    Love everything about it.

It's delicate and girly without being too.

    It's not too small.

    It's affordable.

It's a bow ring without being too cliched.

    Fits my finger perfectly.

    It doesn't look like $16.

    In one word,

    LOVES.

[p/s it's from one of the makeshift stalls facing the basement of Isetan Orchard, near the Laneige counter]

Let's admire this ring some more...

p/s  I applied a coat of OPI Don't Touch my TuTu on my fingernails to prevent them from looking too dull in this picture

by the window, at the hotel room where we spent Jerlaine's birthday over the weekend  :)

a happy and relaxing weekend was enjoyed by all

and I was wearing Chanel's Pirate on my fingernails too - sexy red

That's all, and thank you for looking.

MUFE Rouge Artist Natural & Intense [Nudes & Reds Swatches, Comparisons & LOTDs]

    Hi!

This entry will feature the second edition of MUFE's rouge artist lipsticks.  Dany Sanz, wanted to showcase the profusion of colors in this collection.  More than ever before, ROUGE ARTIST is a real artist's palette in which makeup expresses itself and turns into an experience.  Beauty becomes one with creation in an array of lipsticks in every tone.

I have one each from each series, the ROUGE ARTIST NATURAL and the ROUGE ARTIST INTENSE to showcase here.  I already own a couple of the Rouge Artist intense lipsticks, and they are really smooth and some of the most pigmented lipsticks in my collection.

What's the difference  between ROUGE ARTIST NATURAL & ROUGE ARTIST INTENSE?

    Rouge Artist Natural

    • Avant-Garde Lipstick, Sheer Transparency
    • It is inspired by a return to naturalness, a key trend for spinrg 2012, focusing on fresh, vibrant tones in wardrobes and vanity cases.
    • The result: an astounding choice of shades that are as striking as ever, in an ideal sheer texture to spark inspiration.
    • Lipstick becomes playful with fashion colours.
    • Dresses lips in crystal clear shine.
    • Naturally enhances the radiance of the lips.

    Rouge Artist Intense

    • Supreme pigmentation, supreme coverage, immediate seduction.
    • Real lipstick, with lasting hold.
    • Object of desire and femininity turns lip makeup into an art form.
    • Melt away texture, and extreme colour result.
    • A formula saturated with pure colour pigments, a creamy formula and dazzling shades in a variety of finishes, matte, satiny or pearly.

    Comes in 100 shades! (WOW)

From the most classic to the most extravagant colours, from the most natural to the most sexy.  A hint of nude or passionate red.

I have two shades here:  some product close ups.

MUFE Rouge Artist Natural No.5 is a NUDE BEIGE. My lips but better shade.  It is nude, but the kind of nude that will suit most skintones, it is not the concealer like kind of dull pale, but a glossy natural looking lipstick shade.

MUFE Rouge Artist Intense in the shade MOULIN ROUGE - and well, it is a sexy seductive red, like what the girls of Moulin Rouge would wear on stage during performances.  It is a true red leaning with cool undertones.  I think it suits me, deeply intense red.  Takes a little bit of guts to pull this off for sure.
I can imagine my sister rocking this lipstick, because she is all about the red lips.

    Lip Swatches & LOTDs

    Comparisons of NUDES & REDS

Some shots I snapped during my meeting with the MUFE PR Manager, Sabrina

    It was just lipsticks GALORE!

That's all, and I hope this has been helpful!

THE BODY SHOP: Lily Cole's Limited Edition Makeup Collection [Swatches, LOTD & Mini Giveaway]

    Hi!

In this entry, I will be featuring THE BODY SHOP Lily Cole's Limited Edition Makeup Collection pieces, swatches, and a quick LOTD using the products.

I have earlier shared with you  the whole Beauty with a Heart global movement that THE BODY SHOP is launching, link below:

    http://retailtherapy.onsugar.com/BODY-SHOP-Beauty-Heart-Lily-Coles-Limited-Edition-Makeup-Collection-23145655

It is a fairly large collection, covering everything from blush to eyeshadows, primer, and glosses (with the exception of base products).   The collection is Limited Edition, so do grab your wishlist items quickly if you spot anything that you fancy.

I will be giving away the four lipglosses to ONE lucky reader, so stay tuned til the end of this entry to find out how you can stand a chance to win them.

First up we have the Shimmer Cubes - a quad of four eyeshadows, it is called Shimmer Cubes 24. [Made in Italy]

01 Think Pink, 02 Live Lilac, 03 Go Violet, 04 Tint it Pink

They are all pretty decently pigmented, and work well to create a range of eyelooks.

swatches - done without any base  - the 03 Tint it Pink is my fave among the four shades

    (bottom left shade I mean)

Next, we have a liquid eyeliner in the shade 20 (no name stated) - Made in Italy

It is a shimmery violet shade, that is appearing a bit more blue-ish in my pictures

Next, the two Lip & Cheek Domes - 20 Pinch me Pink & 21 Crazy for Coral [both made in USA]

They are not very pigmented, which is good, because you won't go overboard with dabbing this all over your cheeks.

The texture is rather light and creamy, which makes me think it is better suited as a lip tint, not a cheek tint (potential to slide all over your face in this humid weather is not going to be fun).

I slapped it on rather heavily on my cheeks - and it looks a little crazy here, cos I used quite a bit, but it blended out quite easily into the 'normal zone' again.

This is the Puff on Radiance containing a whopping 46 grams of product!!  I think you can use it all over your body... there is so much product! It is made in Italy.  A pale pink shimmering highlight powder 'balls'.  I didn't swatch this, but I used it as a face highlight in my LOTD which you can see later on.  Adds a radiant glow to my face.

The Pearl Radiance Primer - again, has that ball bits in the product, and they are burst as they get pump out of the bottle.  This is made in Thailand.  There isn't much radiance to the product, nothing glittery either which is good.  I used it in my LOTD. It feels a little 'lumpy' and takes some careful blending to ensure that the bits are all blended and smoothed into the skin.

Products I used in the LOTD

This is what I ended up with.  I used the Radiance Primer, followed by a powder foundation to set and give my face some coverage.

I used these colors in the Shimmer Cube palette.

I didn't use any of the lipglosses, since I was going to keep them as giveaway.  So I applied a nude lipstick to balance out the look.

The look is quite natural, defined with a bit of color.    The Shimmer Cube is easy to use, and easy to blend.

If you are a fan of THE BODY SHOP's Shimmer Cube palettes, you will love this too, I think.

Here is the giveaway - I think someone out there would really love this set of lipglosses.

I already have way too much lip products in my stash, so I am sharing the love by giving away these.

Celebrate & Win the Renanthera Clarins Christian & Olivier Orchid Brooch!‏

In this entry, I am sharing with you the information and pictures about the first Clarins orchid, and also how you can stand to win the Renanthera Clarins Christian & Olivier Orchid Brooch at Clarins Facebook page.

Details included in the images below.

There's a new branch on the family tree.

December 9, 2010 – Clarins, the European leader in premium skincare, proudly announces the birth of the first Clarins orchid, the Renanthera Clarins Christian & Olivier. The new family member, a fiery crimson orchid, made its official debut at the Clarins’ Orchid Presentation, in Singapore Botanic Gardens' Burkill Hall.

The Clarins Orchid is a new hybrid that has been crossed from an award-winning Renanthera hybrid bred in the US and another outstanding Renanthera hybrid from Malaysia. This spectacular cross bloom was specially bred by Singapore Botanic Gardens as a tribute to Clarins, for its continual efforts to support and raise awareness of sustainable development and biodiversity.

These efforts have resulted in projects with the Singapore Botanic Gardens’ like the bi-ennial Singapore Garden Festival (SGF) since its inauguration in 2006. At the SGF 2008, Clarins created two gardens: A Garden of Love, where visitors could learn about plants like ginger and mint, which are found in the brand's beauty products; and a Learning Garden to teach children through play about environmental conservation.

In conjunction with this year's SGF, Clarins and its esteemed retail partner Tangs, helped re-introduce a native orchid species - Grammatophyllum speciosum (aka the Tiger Orchid) – into the cityscape. Tangs Chief Executive Officer, Mr TS Foo, Dr Wong Wei Har, Director of SGF and Singapore Botanic Gardens and Chairman of the Clarins Groupe, Mr Christian Courtin-Clarins, jointly planted the Tiger Orchid onto a mature tree in front of the Orchard Road department store. Clarins also sponsored in-store window displays at Tangs, which promoted the Orchid Conservation Story – one of the central themes at this year’s SGF.

The orchid honour to Clarins is especially significant too because it is the first time that a premium skincare brand has been gifted with its own orchid by the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

Chairman of the Clarins Groupe, Mr Christian Courtin-Clarins, who flew in for the ceremony, says: “It is with great pride and a deep honour for Clarins to be gifted with an orchid that was specially created for us. For it to come from a professional body like Singapore Botanic Gardens, that works to promote greenery and plant species --- the brand and myself, find this tribute more meaningful. It is not simply a flower but it validates the efforts that Clarins has dedicated to sustainable development, all these years.”

    Sowing The Seeds of Love

Orchidaceae (aka the Orchid family) is one of the largest group of flowering plants. It is estimated that there are about 35,000 orchid species on the planet, and that's not counting the undiscovered ones yet. The elegant botanical is also one of the oldest flowering plants around: its existence dates as far back as 120 million years ago, when dinosaurs still roamed the earth.

Though the elegant flower may look fragile, its resilience is remarkable. It's defied evolution time and time again, flourished and thrived in nearly every continent, adapting to live in various environments, from mountains to bogs, in grasslands and rain forests.

The exotic bloom, for centuries, has been a symbol of love, luxury and beauty. The early Greeks saw it to represent virility; while in the Middle Ages, the plant was considered an aphrodisiac and used in love potions.

It is all very befitting then, that a new orchid hybrid has been specially bred by Singapore Botanic Gardens and gifted to Clarins, in recognition of the latter's aim to bring Man and Nature closer. No mere flower, the Clarins Orchid is symbolic of the brand's love and respect of the world.

The beautiful orchid plant -Renanthera Clarins Christian & Olivier – is a hybrid cross of the mother plant, Renanthera Kalsom (a prolific breeder with more than 40 progenies to its name) and the Renanthera Mauricete Brin 'La Belle Dame' FCC/AOS. The latter, a cross bloom too, was created by American Martin Motes, a famous breeder of the Vanda orchid species. The fathering plant of the Clarins Orchid is an impressive title holder. It was awarded a First Class Certificate (FCC) by the American Orchid Society. The FCC is highest accolade for flower quality, and is awarded to orchid species or hybrids that score at least 90 points, on the 100-point scale.

Pollinated back in 2004, and the first bloom of the Clarins Orchid only appeared earlier this year on 8 June. This magnificent plant has the following distinctions:

    * Branching sprays that can reach more than 60cm (or the length of 2 long rulers), with each spray bearing a total of more than 100 well-displayed flowers.

    * The natural spread of the velvety flower is 7 cm long by 4.5 cm wide.

    * Its petals and sepals are crimson, and overlaid with ox blood-red spots. The centre of the lip is lemon-yellow.
