About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Nails Story: Three Ciaté Nail polish [Photos & Swatches]

Ordered my first Ciaté nail polishes from beautybay.com (free intl shipping!!! click click click!)  You can view the site in SGD$$$ and they stock many brands, including RMK, Urban Decay (NAKED2!!!), Deborah Lippmann etc  DEFNITELY somewhere you don't want to shop, if you can't control yourself.  Hahaa ...   Can't remember how much each of these costs, but I think they are in the S$14 range.

I picked three colors, one quirky, one just for the name and one 'famous' shade.

When they arrived in a little over a week, I was very excited.  The bottles look bigger than I had expected, and the brushes are the big ones like the OPI polishes.  The fomula on all these are very smooth, and have high glossy finish.

Vintage is a army green type of color that is an interesting mix of cream, grey and green.   It belongs to the same category of Essie's Sew Psyched (I didn't do any comparisons here, no more clean nail wheels), and also Chanel's Khaki Vert.  Though I think Vintage has more grey undertones. Opaque in 2 coats.

Cookies & Cream is a nude shade, which is also the IT color if you hear people rave about Ciaté nail polishes.  It is a sheer-ish neutral tone color, with a little grey (again) which makes it a rather cool toned nude.  There is no hint of pink and beige... just a very putty sort of shade. I had to apply 3 even shades to get full color payoff.

Fade to Griege is a color I pick just because of the name.  It belongs to the same family of Metro Chic (again, I have Metro Chic, but apologies for not comparing them side by side).  It is a dusty grey purple, and is opqaue in 2 coats.

    Here they are:

    Vintage

    Fade to Griege

    Cookies & Cream

Have you tried out Ciaté nail polishes?  Which are your faves (recommendations)? I am contemplating a couple of wicked reds.  Hmmm...

    Thanks for looking!

Review: MUFE Eye Prime Long Wear Eyelid Primer

Recently I have been loving the new MUFE EYE PRIME Long Wear Eyelid Primer.

It retails for S$35 and is released as part of the La Boheme collection which I have previously mentioned here.

I love it so much that I use it even on days where I don't wear any eyeshadow - to prevent any foundation creasing from happening on my eyelids, if you know what I mean and also it does even-ed out my eyelids ever so slightly, which is a bonus!

It is mostly transparent but I think it is not totally clear like the NARS primer.

The MUFE Eye Prime has a dry creamy texture.  Meaning that you have to work quite quickly to spread the product all over your lids.  I usually dab on one eye, blend it into my lid, then do the same for other eye - if it 'dries' before you blend, you will end up with a patchy look.  I don't mind this 'hassle' because the product truly works to keep eyeshadows looking fresh and crease free throughout the whole day.

I don't quite like UDPP anymore, and I think sometimes the TFSI is a bit too runny (and sometimes doesn't prevent creasing for long hours).  My HG eyeshadow primer is the NARS one, and I have been through a couple tubes of that already.  I think that the MUFE one is very very comparable to the NARS one.

I wish  that it comes in a tube version though - I just can't help but think that a lot of product is sitting inside the container unused.

Overall, nothing much else I can say about it, except that it really works to make your eyeshadow last the whole day - and definitely worth checking out if you have been disappointed by other eyeshadow primers in the market.

Hope this review has been helpful.  Thank you for looking!

MUFE is available at Sephora stores and the MUFE store at Raffles Place.

Review: Laneige Snow BB Soothing Cushion

    Hi hi!

This is an overdue review entry... but I hope it will be helpful anyway.

In this entry, I will be reviewing the new Laneige Snow BB Soothing Cushion.  For my previous feature entry containing the full detailed product information, click here.

The product retails for S$59 and comes with a refill pack.

I used this everyday for almost 3 weeks, and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed using it.

    In terms of application:

The product is all inside the cushion - or rather a piece of sponge.  How I applied it is that I pressed the puff that comes with the product, and it picks up enough product to use on an area of my face.  I need to go back and forth several times for my face to be evenly covered.  The liquid soaked sponge will deliver the right amount of product when you apply it.   I do like how compact the packaging is, and it is in a solid chic white compact, with a mirror, the puff is stored separately from the cushion itself.  After a week of using the puff, I sort of got tired of this method (took too long) and I switched to dabbing my buffer brush into the cushion to pick up the product - which also works just as well, if not better.  I also find that using the puff kind of mess up the compact, some of the product gets onto the casing, which irks me a little.

In terms of texture and coverage

The Laneige Snow BB Soothing Cushion is quite unlike any other BB cream type of products I have ever used.  It is very liquidy (which you can feel and also tell when you press the puff onto your face.  The coverage is tinted, very light, and if you have good clear skin, that alone is sufficient as a base for your face.  The high SPF factor is another added advantage for me, so when I am using it, I skip my usual sun protection.

What I really love about this product, and how I use it, is as a makeup base.  I personally prefer more coverage for my daily work and going out, so I will apply a thin layer of the BB Soothing Cushion, then followed by my liquid foundation.  Because my skin is already prepped and evened out by the Laneige BB soothing cushion, I didn't have to use as much foundation.  I noticed that on the days, and the whole week where I was using this as a base, my makeup really did stay on longer, and fresher (and also less oily).  Because it is so light, and liquidy (unlike usual creamy bb creams) I don't feel like I am adding a layer to my foundation routine.  But yet the similar effects are there -making  my foundation last throughout the day, evening out my skintone and all that good stuff.

    My overall thoughts:

My LOTDs from late Jan to early Feb probably featured me using this product as base and I do enjoy using it. The outstanding factor to me, is that it really make my makeup lasts --- and do note, I am not always in air-conditioned comfort and I perspire a lot during the course of the day, but this product also evens out my skintone quite significantly.   For the price and what you get, it is a pretty good deal, and if you are constantly on  the go, and need to touch up, I think this product definitely stands out, it's like you get what you need in a liquid base, in a compact .. and I didn't show any actual product application here.. (well, I did take some pictures of application process, but currently that particular memory card decided to go MIA, so I do apologise for the use of press images -- will most probably update images once I managed to find that set of pictures!).

Click click click to see the above mentioned 'flawless' base I did with the Laneige Snow BB Soothing Cushion

Lastly, I do recommend you checking out this product - have a swatch at the counter to see the product for yourself.  You will be quite intrigued by the texture, and also the finish of the Snow BB Soothing Cushion.

I hope this has been helpful, and thanks for looking!!

DIOR Vernis 257 Incognito [Swatches & Comparisons]

Dior Vernis in 257 Incognito is a nude-y pink creme finish nail polish which is released as part of the Dior Addict Exteme lipstick collection (collection information link here!)   - You know me, I love all my nudes and natural color nail polish shades.  I have probably at least over 20 of these in my collection, in all varying shades of pinks, nudes, beiges and tans.

This shade leans a little sheer as compared to other Dior polishes that I own, but if you wait a bit for some drying time in between coats, you end up with a very smooth two coats with full color payoff.  You really need to wait before applying another layer, to avoid any streaks or bald patches.

I applied three coats in these pictures so you could see the color showing up more truly - but in real life, two coats is sufficient.

I like this nude-y pink shade, it is very flattering, and also, very chic.

I pulled out some shades which might be along the same lines - maybe only Zoya Pandora comes quite close to the Dior shade.

I can't wait to check out the rest of the collection!

That's all, and thanks for looking!

DIOR Vernis 579 Plaza [Swatches & Comparisons]

Dior Vernis 579 Plaza is released as part of their lipstick launch the Dior Addict Extreme lipsticks (link here!) and it is a beautiful neutral (leaning to warm) hot pink (not neon though).

I have also featured two out of the four nail polish from this collection as a sneak peek in this entry here.

and the new Addict Extreme formula lipstick (486 Cruise) here.

I really like the formula of this shade, two even coats give you full colour payoff, and Dior polishes typically last me a good 5 days without much tipwear.  Hot pink, bright pinks are not unique nail polish shades, however, if you are a fan of pink nail polishes, you need to check this out.

Personally, I really like the warm/ neutral tones of this bright pink, it is very flattering on my skintone, and later when you see the comparison to a cooler toned pink, you will know what I mean.  It is also a creamy smooth hot pink, without any metallic nor shimmery finish.

Again, I highly recommend this rich and perfect for spring pink shade.

    Photos & swatches:

a comparison to NARS Schiap which is very cool toned, but just as bright

it really depends on your personal preferences as to which hot pink is for you,

my undetones are quite neutral anyway, so both pinks kind of look the same on me

but in real life, I think I prefer the Dior shade on my skintone

That's all, and thank you for looking.

Haul: ZA True White Liquid Foundation [Swatches & First Impressions]

This is another Watsons impulsive purchase, the new ZA True White Liquid Foundation (UP$23.50 but I paid $18.35 for it, not too sure how the discount works) ---- and Amy (purplio) first told me about it, saying that it swatches very nicely.  Amy and I are each other's foundation enablers, so when she says something is good/ nice... I just need to have a go at it.

And for the price, I think you can't go wrong.  I also like the glass bottle packaging, it feels kind of like one of my Clarins or Lancome liquid foundations.  I picked mine in the shade OC10, and it is a true match for my skin.  I like that the slightly yellow tone shade helps to neutralise the slightly pink-red tones in my skin.

The consistency is light, and the coverage is light to medium.  I applied it with my fingers, as I often do when I am testing out new foundations, cos then I can really feel the texture of the foundation.

It is very smooth, and just like any other med to high range foundations in my stash.  In  terms of finish and wearabilty, I would put this in the same category as my Bourjois healthy mix serum foundation (in terms of the texture and finish - I am aware that the consistency is entirely different).  Overall, it is good as an everyday foundation, if you are looking for something in the lower price point - really for slightly over $20, you are getting a really decent product.

    I think there are 5 or 6 shades -

    OC0W, OC00, OC10, OC20, OC30 and the only pink undertone one, PO10

picture I took at work this morning (with my iphone)

the finish gives a very real skin slightly dewy and radiant look

and another picture I took (reapplied the foundation)

I think the finish is really quite nice...

    all products used:

shu uemura instant-glow immediate radiance skin perfecting cream, ZA true white liquid foundation, ettusais loose powder

cheeks - Illamasqua Tremble powder blush

lips - MAC Tread Gently tendertone

eyes - NAKED palette Toasted, and Dollywink lashes in #9 Natural Dolly

    Haul: NEW DollyWink False Lashes

    Hi hi!

I was a little impulsive, and purchased the new released DollyWink false lashes yesterday (at Watsons where they had some 7% off storewide).  They aren't the cheapest lashes around, but they aren't my most expensive either.  I like that each box contains 2 pairs, and depending on how many uses you get out of each pair ----obviously the more uses you get, the more economical each pair becomes.  The little tube of glue that comes with each box is actually pretty darn good.

I decided to take the plunge with these lashes, because I have always admired them on the shelves, but couldn't bear to shell out over $20 for falsies (and don't ask me why I have paid way more for my Shu Uemura ones).  But I think the lashes are really one of the better ones out there, and if you look closely at these two sets of lashes (taken with my iphone camera, mind you) you can see just how soft and fluttery they look.

I like that #9 Natural Dolly has an invisible band, and it looks like little clusters of lash hairs, so if you are wearing light makeup, you wear these lashes, they add some volume and length to your eyelashes, and very very natural.

My only qualm is that the lashes are really quite wide, and most people would need to trim quite a substantial bits from the ends in order to fit their eyes.  I didn't trim them, and I try to place them more towards the outer corner of my eyes to extend and give the illusion of me having longer and bigger eyes.

#10 Sweet Cat has a denser outer coner, it is very wispy, and also on the natural side.  I like lashes like this, they also have the effect of elongating your eyeshape.  I like how the hair lengths taper nicely towards the corners.

Here I am wearing #9 Natural Dolly.  You see how the hairs really does look like my own lashes or something.

    Pretty amazing.

    LOVES.

Have you tried Dollywink false lashes?

That's all, and thanks for looking!

NEW Clarins UV Plus HP Day Care SPF40 Beige [Information, Photos & Swatches]

    Available March 2012

    UV Plus HP Beige S$74

Clarins, expert in UV protection, launches a new beige-tinted UV PLUS HP SPF 40 day care.

UV PLUS HP has won several magazine beauty awards around the world: Santé Magazine (2006), Instyle (2006), Marie-Claire (2007) and Her World (2008).

Today, Clarins introduces a new beige-tinted version that offers coverage and evens the complexion for women who’d like to minimize the appearance of dark spots, redness and imperfections.

Just like the neutral and pink-tinted versions, this new skin care delivers a triple protection “shield”.

Protection against UV rays and pollution

Specifically formulated for women who want protection against sun’s rays in the city, UV PLUS HP SPF 40 protects against photo-ageing and dark spots. A 100% mineral screen ensures optimal tolerance while its lightweight texture leaves no white residue on skin. Thanks to the presence of an anti-pollution complex formulated with 5 ingredients and plant extracts, skin is also protected against the harmful environmental effects of city life.

Innovation: free radicals are neutralized at the source

UV PLUS HP also protects against photo-ageing linked to oxidative stress. Its secret?

A high-performance, “Made-in-France” fruit extract that is rich in superoxide dismutase (SOD): canteloupe melon from Provence, obtained from organic farming.

SOD from cantaloupe is one of the most powerful known antioxidants: it destroys “primary” free radicals before they oxidize lipids, proteins and cellular DNA. Thanks to this extract, UV PLUS HP SPF 40 ensures reinforced protection against oxidative stress within the skin and externally.

    Three true colours now available

UV PLUS HP SPF 40. Triple protection for the face: anti-UV, antioxidant and anti-pollution, formulated for city dwellers to maintain beautiful-looking skin. Its unbelievably light texture is now available in three shades.

    Neutral

Invisible on the skin, this transparent shade smoothes easily onto the skin and will not leave behind any traces of white or oily residue.

Natural Looking - invisible protection, and great under makeup.

    Pink

For a clear, more luminous complexion, illuminates the skin in a subtle shade of pink. Promotes a natu- ral-looking, fresh appearance and brightens a dull complexion.

illuminates dull skin on days without makeup.

    Beige

For a perfectly flawless complexion! The beige tone delivers light coverage and is ideal for immediately minimizing any redness, dark spots and tiny imperfections. Promotes a more even skin tone that looks impeccable and luminous.

Flawless even toned skin, light coverage, great for no makeup days.

No matter which shade you choose, UV PLUS HP SPF 40 ensures perfectly matte skin all day long. Apply over your regular daytime moisturizer. Shake well before use. Can be used with all skin care and make-up.

I have previously featured the original UV Plus HP Day Care SPF40 in the neutral and tinted versions,

    link here!

The Clarins UV HP Day Care SPF40 has always been one of my top fave sunscreen products, it is so lightweight, and I really love the texture.

The new beige version has the added bonus (to me, at least) of having slightly more coverage, kind of like a tinted moisturiser that evens out your skintone.

If you are wondering, what's the different among the three shades, and why would you need one or all of these?

If you are going to wear makeup for the day (say, to work) then maybe you want to use the neutral one (which is totally transparent) under your makeup routine.  However, say during days off when you don't feel like having makeup, and yet want to look fresh and have your skintone even-ed out, the tinted and beige versions would definitely come in handy.

    swatches of all three

You can see here, none of the shades left any white cast on my hand

another close up of the swatches

These are a little pricey, but a little goes a long way, and each bottle does last me a long time with regular usage.

My sisters all love it too, for the texture and the protection it gives.

Hope this has been helpful, and thank you for looking!

NEW Dior Addict EXTREME Lipstick in 486 Cruise [Swatches & LOTD]

    Hi!

This entry features the new Dior Addict Extreme Lipstick, I will be showing you the shade 486 Cruise.  I have previously shared the whole collection information about this range of lipsticks, in this entry (link here).

Here are some pictures of the packaging:

Just a comparison of the new Addict Extreme Lipstick vs the current Dior Addict Lipstick (which was released last Feb).

Love the sleek luxe black casing, very solid and sturdy.

486 Cruise is a pretty creamy pink shade.

This is very very smooth, creamy and glossy. The color payoff is decent, and true to what you see in the tube.

This is how it looks like on my lips.

And a quick LOTD with this lipstick.

This particular color is not very unique, but I am itching to purchase a couple more when the whole collection launches in April.

I am very very keen to get Incognito - which is a nude shade.

I love to wear these creamy lipsticks that deliver some color (think Revlon Lip Butters, Clinique Almost Lipsticks, Chanel Rouge Coco Shine, etc).

All products used in the LOTD:

base: Shu Uemura instant glow radiance skin perfecting cream * first time using it, OMG.  LOVES - just use a TINY bit! , Shu Uemura Smooth Fit Fluid Foundation, Shiseido White Lucent Skincare Powder, Shu Uemura pro gel cealer to conceal spots

cheeks: Diorskin nude glow healthy glow summer powder 001 Aurora all over the face, Dior Rosy Glow 001 Petal for blush

eyes: MUFE eyeshadow primer, suquu blend color eyeshadow 01 Kakitsubata, Laura Mercier caviar stick eye color Sapphire as liner

lips: Dior addict extreme lipstick 486 Cruise

lashes: my own customised pairs of falsies

Thanks for looking, and happy weekend!

Nails Story: A-England Bridal Veil [Photos & Swatches]

A-England's latest collection, The Legend, see a line-up of 7 shades, all very shimmery metallic (slightly holographic, though I won't say they are straight out holographic).  It is hard to put the A-England finish into any category.  Under daylight, they shimmery, and glimmer so brilliantly, and really eye-catching.  I have one other A-England nail polish - Tristan - and it was one of the more popular shades among most people during my little express manicure stint at Scape a few months back.

So, anyway, yes, back to Bridal Veil - it is a black nail polish - with that same interesting mix of metallic and holographic shimmer.  I will show it with a comparison, you can see it is neither holographic, nor gummetal.  And the shimmer is so densely packed, but yet it doesn't take away the blackness of Bridal Veil.

Very chic.    And especially so, on my short nails.

You can buy A-England nail polish at

mei mei's signatures here and also check out their Facebook page

    a-england website (free intl shipping!)

    Photos & swatches

I am comparing it with Color Club's Revvvvolution - a black holographic - I used to have OPI My Private Jet - which I actually USED UP - but I have given my second bottle to my sister since then.   They look quite similar in the bottle, but entirely different once applied.  Revvvolution is more grey-silver in its base color, while Bridal Veil still shows up solid black.

    Hope this has been helpful.

Currently contemplating a proper order for some a-england polishes.

Eugenia from ommorphia has some very mouth-watering swatches of these nails polishes on her site,  her description is priceless too!

    link here!

That's all and thanks for looking!
