About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

My DIORSNOW Base Routine & Review

I have been on a Dior kick lately, if you haven't noticed.  I get to preview their new products, and I also get suckered into making my own purchases after checking them out at the counters in person.

I was given the DiorSnow UV Shield BB creme in their lastest launch (link here to my feature entry) and I thought of building a base routine around this product.   So I went and bought the DiorSnow instant spot concealer -- okay, that was a bit of a whim purchase, because I was actually looking at the nail polishes, and somehow I got drawn to the concealer.

In this entry,  I will be giving my thoughts on each product, and how I use them together.

Firstly, are these two sample tubes of UV makeup base - Beige Cristal & Rose Cristal.  For 5ml, they are good for 4 to 5 days of usage (for me at least).  I wanted the Blue Cristal too, but they ran out of samples for that.

What I like about this makeup base -- it evens out my skintone, and makes my skin smooth and ready for foundation and/or the bb creme I will apply next. It contains crystalline pigments that instantly enhance the radiance of the complexion, and also prolongs makeup wear.

Next, is the UV Shield BB Cream - it contains SPF50 PA+++ ---- which seems to be the industry standard for most BB creams these days.  This product actually comes in 4 shades - and the BB creme is the latest release (with the Icelandic glacier water), replacing the old bb creme.

The four shades - translucent, white, light BB, and this regular BB creme which I was sent.

I swatched all four shades at the Dior counter this week - the translucent and white looks white, but obviously the translucent one blends out clear... and the white one leaves a whitish cast at the back of my hand.  The light BB shade looks too stark for my whole face, so I would think that the BB creme shade I have is a suitable match for me.

I have been using this UV BB creme for 2 weeks, and I do enjoy its emollient consistency.  It is also one of the BB cremes which I have tried that most feel like a liquid foundation.  A richer liquid foundation, definitely.  But it doesn't have that typical BB creme texture at all.  It blends smoothly into my skin, and even though you would see in the swatches that it looks like my skintone or half a shade darker, it blends and matches my skintone after a while.

I like that the product comes in a pump tube, and 1.5 pumps gives me enough product for my own face.

Next, is the Instant Spot Concealer which I purchased ($71) and it comes only in two shades.   It is very thick and smooth, and being a concealer, yes it has that intense full coverage which I expected.  When the BA says it will lighten the spots which I am using it to conceal, I was SOLD.  Whether this claim is true or not, I can't review yet in this entry.  But I can say that this is a great concealer for me to conceal my spots and brighten my undereyes.

Here's some product information that comes with the product:

'instantly softens the appearance of dark spots and skin irregularities.  Enriched with a powerful 50SPF PA+++, it helps to clarify spts and protect them from UVA-UVB rays.  Your complexion is perfectly even and protected'

I never have a concealer that contains 50SPF!  So I have high hopes that this will give my skin protection in the hot summer months ahead --- together with the rest of the products in this range.

    Swatches of everything:

Here's how everything look like on my face

    1. apply the UV makeup base

    2. apply UV BB creme

    3. conceal spots etc with the concealer

    4. set with loose powder

(I am wearing Dior Extreme Addict in the shade Cruise on my lips, Lunasol eyeshadows on my eyes, K-palette eyebrow marker)

    Overall thoughts:

    • I like that this combination is giving me maximum sun protection, and also brightens my complexion, making me look quite glowy.
    • It is not the most oil-control combination - but my face doesn't look oily - though when I blot my t-zone every 4 hours, the blotter looks pretty much oiled up.
    • It is pretty decent in terms of lasting power.  My skin doesn't oxidise at the end of the day, and I still look fair and fresh after a good 8 hours.
    • The coverage offered by this routine is the same as what I would get from my liquid foundation - a major plus point.
    • It takes a bit of time for the base routine to set into my skin, but once set, the finish is flawless and smooth.

Among these products, I would definitely recommend the BB creme  - though I would strongly suggest you checking out all 4 shades to see if you want just a clear or tinted coverage.  The UV makeup base is also another great product, because it is light and creamy, and enhances your complexion.  I can't say much about the concealer yet, except that it has great coverage, and the 50SPF is a bonus factor for me.

I also have these samples on hand, and can't wait to try them out (most prob when I am travelling because I am quite fully stocked in my skincare routine at the moment!)

I hope that this review and a bit of ramble has been helpful, and thanks for reading.  If you have any questions about these products, leave in the comments below!

RMK 15th Anniversary Cheek Palette 02 Brown Beige [Photos & Swatches]

To celebrate RMK's 15th anniversary and its dedication to the beauty industry, there is the launch of a limited edition anniversary collection.  Two striking palettes have both beautifully crafted and sealed with intense craftsmanship and lots of love.

The 15th Anniversary Cheek Palette comes in 2 shades of soft vibrant Pink Coral, and chic Brown Beige.  Simply brush over the embossed flower fairy.  There is a blend of 6 petals in different tones and textures to help update your look for a beautiful Spring glow.

The cheek palette retails for S$85 and is currently available at all RMK counters.

I got mine in 02 Brown Beige.  If you want to see how 01 Pink Coral looks like, check out Mag's review and swatches here.

the cheek palette features a cute fairy with a 'cape' that consists of 4 petals of a pale gold, pink and peach, with the brown petal being the more intense shade.  The background of the palette is a flesh tone shade that pretty much matches my skintone.  the fairy's head and face is an overspray, once I swiped everything together, you are left with a white highlight shade.  Yes, I swirled the whole cheek palette together for this swatching and photo-taking session.    The bead necklace she is wearing is also an overspray.

let's look at some close up photos of this beauty before the defined lines and shapes are gone!

the whole palette contains very very fine irisdescent shimmer

and it is very very smooth

    for the swatches,

I just swiped with one finger, all over the palette.

    ALL OVER.

and slightly blurry shots to show the irisdescent and fine shimmer

the palette is super smooth and finely milled

The color shows up a pale bronzy shade on my hands, and because it isn't too shimmery,

I would use it as a light bronzer on parts of my face to see some healthy glow to my cheeks

    and what's left?

see, this plastic cover is good for something -

because when the cheek palettes is all used, and you can't see the fairy design anymore,

the plastic cover reminds you of the beauty of this cheek palette!

    what's left -

so now you see the six shades of the palette

the white fairy head, the beige background, and the 4 petals of the fairy cape

and if you spend more than $220 at RMK, you will receive this pretty bag too

I hope this entry has been helpful.

    Thank you!

Haul: Laura Mercier Launches at Sephora

On Thursay, I met Sarah & Joey for a dinner chit-chat catching up, and we met at Sephora, and none of us walked out empty handed.  Firstly, we were all poring over the Laura Mercier display, swatching and oohhhing over the products.   Probably half an hour later, we were all a little sheepish, and discussed our purchases over dinner.

If you have seen my instagram feed, none of these is new to you, of course.

I bought 3 items, all base products - and now I have a complete routine using Laura Mercier products.   (speaking of which, I have a series of brand specific base routines & reviews coming up, Lancome Teint Miracle, Guerlain, DiorSnow, and lastly Laura Mercier).

The color makeup products look really yummy too, but I can't justify buying one more eyeshadow or one more blusher.  We were all very happy to know that the LM prices at Sephora are extremely comparable to the US prices, and way lower than the LM prices at True Colors!!  For example, I was told, the secret camou concealer palette retails for over $70 at True Colors, but I only paid $46 for mine at Sephora.  Besides everything at Sephora is FRESH stock, they didn't come out of funky smelling drawers at True Colors.

I will do swatches together with my routine & review in a later entry.  I wish they brought in the nail polish range though.  But the range of products they have is quite comprehensive, including 3 skincare items & makeup brushes.

    But I bought:

    1. Secret Camouflage Concealer SC-3  - $46

    2. Oil Free Supreme Foundation Blush Ivory - $68 (I think so.  It was so easy to find my shade!)

    3. Eye Basics in Flax $35 - kind of like an eyeshadow primer

and I already have the existing LM products to complete the foundation routine:

Translucent Loose Powder (retails for about $58 here I think)

Travel sized Tinted Moisturise (Bought in US)

a few pictures of the display

their Shimmer Bloc which looks like the BB Shimmerbricks

Have you checked out the Laura Mercier products yet?

That's all, and thanks for looking!
