About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

DIOR Icy Halos Vernis 021 Icy Dew & 191 Glacier [Photos & Swatches]

I bought both the nail polish released with Dior's Asia exclusive DiorSnow & Icy Halos collection last week.  I has seen pictures and featured this collection in this entry HERE. I didn't have any intention to purchase any of the nail polish, because there are (ahem) a few more which will be released in April which I have my heart absolutely set on getting.  But the BA swatched them on the back of my hand with a piece of tape, and I saw how the icy shades sparkle and glisten in the lights, I was SOLD.  I also bought one other product -- and together with the whole bunch of samples I received, I will be sharing with you my thoughts on almost the whole new DIORSnow range of base products soon (which includes the makeup base, bb cream and concealer).   Anyway, I digress.  Back to the nail polish.

They are both pale icy shades, ICY DEW is a whiteish pink pearlescent shade with fine gold glitter bits.  It takes 3 coats to get full opaqcity, and you can prolly layer this shade over another pale shade.  I don't use it over a darker base thought, because the pearlescent base of this nailpolish is not as sheer.

GLACIER is a icy cool toned baby blue with subtle shimmer.  It is an interesting blue that can appear both warm, and cool toned, almost like a duochrome but within the shades of pale blue.  It is opaque in two coats - a very very light airy pale blue which is quite unique in my collection as most of my blues are very rich creamy ones.

    Photos & swatches:

putting Dior's ICY DEW & Chanel's Pearl Drop side by side

you can see that Pearl Drop is a golden warm shade

while Icy Dew is a pinkier shade

kind of like cheek highlight powders, you have the golden warm tone of highlight, and also the pink pearlescent highlight

my pictures aren't showing up - and I really should have waited for natural morning daylight - but I hope you get the general idea of the nuances of both pale shade

this is the mini DIOR haul which I made, the BA was helpful,

and generous with the samples, she let me try out the Diorsnow skincare products too

I have been liking the DiorSnow base routine lately - lovely finish - and that's no foundation at all - and it lasts the whole day.  Can't wait to get my review entry up.

That's all, and thank you for looking.

Nails Story: CHANEL Pirate [Swatches & Comparisons]

I bought Chanel Pirate on a little whim last week.  I think it might have been limited edition with one of their later collections from last year, but anyway, it was in stock, and I guess it was meant to be.

Pirate is a very classic looking blue based red.  It has an almost jelly extremely glossy finish - you can tell in the bottle, how 'translucent' it looks, but  yet it is not sheer on the nails at all.  I would paint 3 thin coats of this shade for maximum results.

It is not a unique red, but I do love collecting all these pretty red nails, they look good both on the toes and the fingernails at time of the year.

    Photos & swatches:

Behind the scenes of a nail polish comparison shoot

I usually line up the shades in the order they appear on the nailwheel

this way, when I edit my pictures, I know which is which,

because with reds, you can never tell!

That's all, and thanks for looking!!

    Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Jasminora

A while back, I purchased Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Jasminora at TANGS - I had sort of fallen for this range of Guerlain scents while I was in HK, I never noticed them before, they are often displayed in the background, and I just kind of assumed its all part of the ornate counter decorations, til I sniffed at some of the scents, and realised they are super clean, fresh and floral.

The whole range of the Aqua Allegora is a tribute to nature and floral.

    Scent description from Sehora:

    Aqua Allegoria Jasminora
Each fragrance in Guerlain's Aqua Allegoria collection is an ode to nature. In Flora Nymphea, the fragrance is centered around a jasmine flower from the southern Italian region of Calabria.

This flower's rare and precious spirit is elevated with notes of white freesia and lily of the valley. The freshness of green notes adds a crisp, earthy quality. In the base notes, a resinous amber accord joins white musks that linger on the skin to prolong the sensual aromas of jasmine.

I previously own another from this range, which is the Herba Fresca - a minty green grass scent.

Love these scents on hot hot all year summer days.

They come in two sizes, I bought mine in the smaller 75ml, seeing as I won't be using much of my perfumes up anytime soon - for S$87 or 84.. can't remember.
