The Makeup Blogette's Top 12 of 2012

Hi hi

Yes, the first picture isn't a pretty one... it's a pretty mess...but there's a reason for it -- I have been getting several requests to do my top fave products of the year, and I think I finally managed to narrow down the products which I think really deserve special mention (again), to round up the year and take stock of the new products which I got to try out this year.

I will try not to include any previously mentioned products, and restrict my list to things that I have only started using this year, even though they may not necessarily be launched in 2012.  These are my personal faves, and I can truly say that I would repurchase them when I run out, something that’s hard for me to do given the huge amount of products which regularly come my way to feature and review on the blog.

Here are my 12 products, in the following categories – I have also included review/ feature links wherever possible so you can click on those for more details:

Base/ Foundations:

1 - Shiseido Radiant Lifting Foundation  (demo & review)

If you like a full coverage, long lasting and natural finish foundation, I recommend the Shiseido Radiant Lifting Foundation.  This lasts me throughout a humid 10 hour day, it looks fresh - a little goes a long way.

2 - Urban Decay Naked Foundation (review)

Impressive because of  the wide shade range, there’s definitely something for everyone across the different skin tones.  It is very long lasting, and very very light-weight, hence the ‘naked’  tag word.  I love everything about this foundation.

3 - Giorgio Armani Maestro foundation (feature, swatches, review)

One of this year’s highly anticipated foundation release, it has a beautiful smooth and flawless finish.  The coverage is light, but buildable.  The application and ‘feel’ of the foundation is divine and simply luxurious.

<strong> Eyeshadows:

4 - Burberry Eyeshadows  (LOTD)

I took the plunge and bought 4 of them this year.  They are not exactly new, but the steep price tag put me off a long time.  I already have my HG eyeshadows (Inglot, GA Eyes to Kill Intense) but the Burberry eyeshadows offer something new in the texture and all the different nuances of neutrals (Midnight Brown!  Pale Barley! Rosewood!) they have.  I don’t think I will be buying more of the eyeshadows – but I really do enjoy the four that I own.  They are so soft, and the finish is such a beautiful pearlised shimmer which is ‘grown up’ and sophisticated.  You really got to try out at least one of them.

5 - LORAC Pro Palette (Swatches, LOTDs here and here)

I would pick this over both my UD Naked Palettes any day.  The texture and color payoff is even more impressive (not that the Naked Palettes aren’t).   And I like the reddish browns they include in the palette, and the range of mattes too.  I don't think I need to go on anymore about this amazing eyeshadow palette.

<strong>6 -- Fragrance

Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir and Amber & Lavender</strong> (entry here) have been my faves this year.  Whatever combination of scents I wear, I never fail to spritz either one along the way.  They are very refreshing, unique and makes me feel happy whenever I wear them.

7 - NARS Lipsticks  (Some swatches: Reds here and here, nudes here, bold & dark here and here)

I have been raving about these recently.  Having tried out several in the past few years, and hauling a bunch of them lately, I have almost everything from each range of lipsticks they do.  The colors are beautiful, the formula is not drying whether its sheer, glossy, matte or semi-matte.  They come in such a wide range of colors (very very impressive range of nudes and reds, I must add) and with names that totally suck me in.  So if there’s something you need from NARS (other than their blushes) grab a few lippies!

8 - Dior Rouge Nude (Swatches of Chanelle, and Grege)

These are my everyday lipsticks, I can slap them on and go.  The colors are mostly ‘my lips but better’ shades, and they do all varies shades of beige-y pink, pinky nude, nude-y pink… you get the idea.  But what is wonderful is that the colors are all super flattering, and never ‘too nude’.  They enhance your lipcolors, and the formula is so moisturizing and smooth.

9 - Kiehl’s Midnight Discovery (featured here)

When it comes to skincare, I try to be more selective, and sticking to the several brands which I know work for me.  Though I have used many great skincare products this year, and I still rely on my regular fave combinations, I do think the Kiehls Midnight Discovery range is outstanding to me, and to my sister too.  I can't tell the difference in this eye cream (cos I don't have much eye concerns at the moment, not so much because it is not working) but my sis saw marked improvement in the dullness under her eyes, and it isn't too rich for her as well.  She is only 20, but she swears by it, and we are already on our second tube.. which is saying a lot because there are at least 5 other eye creams in rotation in my stash.  I really love the Midnight Discovery Concentrate - it is a soothing oil serum which really calms my skin whenever it is cranky and it's something I have come to depend on for a quick overnight fix of my general skin well-being.

Another worthy mention - I am using Kenzoki now.. mad LOVES.  But more on that in another entry, hopefully.

I am a nail polish junkie so I have to mention two of my fave nail polish launches this year. </strong>

10 -  Dior Nudes

A chic collection of four nude nail polishes suited for every skintone, I had to get all of them.

11 - Chanel Twin Sets (swatches here)

This is my third year collecting Chanel's Fashion Night Out releases, and this year, they delighted us with matching lipsticks and nail polishes.  All three shades have great formula and are so classic.  I love the choice of colors in this collection, and there is something to suit everyone.

12 - Caudalie Divine Oil

What it is:
An enhancing dry oil for body and hair.

What it does:
This multi-use miracle oil is ideal for hair, nails, bath, and massages. Divine Oil is a unique alchemy of four extremely fine and evanescent vegetable oils (60 percent of the formula). To ensure that the benefits are truly complete, Divine Oil also features patented antioxidant grape-seed polyphenols and fair trade shea butter.

A subtle fragrance that will make you swoon as it caresses your skin. For the signature note of the fragrance Jacques Cavallier chose the rose, both the Moroccan rose and the Bulgarian rose. A burst of grapefruit and sparkling spicy pink pepper add a freshness to the fragrance while cedar, vanilla, and white musk base notes offer warmth. The composition is modern and infinitely desirable.

**** I haven't properly mention the Caudalie Divine oil before, but it is really amazing, I love the scent, and I love using oils like this to nourish my skin.  It is a little pricier than other oils, but yet not crazy expensive too.  And I love the spray nozzle, it dispenses the product evenly.  LOVE LOVE LOVE *** I only use oils on my skin (face and body) though... not on my hair.

There are many other great awesome products I have used this year, but these are 12 I would pick over and over from this year.  :)

Honorable Mentions

Opening of two main beauty shopping locations, the revamped DFS and TANGS Beauty Hall have totally pimped up the makeup shopping experience in Singapore.  We have access to so many brands right now... and I have mentioned countless times, there's nothing like being able to buy in person... what's the difference a few dollars going to make, right?

Being witness to all these amazing brands launching is definitely the highlights of the year:

<strong>NARS Launch

</strong>Enough said.  <strong>

Return of these brands: </strong>

<strong>YSL Launch

Giorgio Armani Beauty Launch

It has been an exciting year here at The Makeup Blogette.  Lots of high points, and I am glad to be able to continue to enjoy rambling and keeping up with this hobby of mine.  Long time readers would probably noted the shift in my makeup preferences and 'shopping' patterns, I dabble with the ocassional style/ fashion type entries because I do enjoy accessorising and observing (not really following) what's in season, but ultimately I am still a makeup junkie at heart.   I hope you have enjoyed my reviews and thoughts so far, and thank you very very much for being here.
There are technical changes which I wish I could make to the blog, in terms of the layout and making reading and navigation easier, but I am really not tech savvy when it comes to the back end of the whole web design thingy.  I am thinking of asking some skillful design student who is able to do it for me and handle all the technicalities, without charging crazy money for it..... hmmm.

What are your favourite products of the year?   I would love to read about your recommendations in the comments below or if you are going to post a similar blog entry too.

Here's wishing everyone a very happy new year ahead, and may all your wishes come true!

I will probably blog spam a bit more before the new hectic season starts, and then we shall look forward another (even better) brand new year!

Thanks for reading!   Hope you enjoyed this entry as much as I have enjoyed reflecting and sharing! :)

LOTD: The Ultimate Red Lips with GA Lip Maestro

Hi hi!

Here I will be showing you how both the red Lip Maestro look on me.  I did a simple look, just something shiny on the eyes, lashes and a clean natural complexion.  Definitely something appropriate for a formal event and also somewhere casual.

I have many red lipsticks, but currently I am most excited by the Lip Maestro.  From the application, to the overall look and finish, it is such a pleasant experience wearing them.  Despite the richness of the formula, they don't feel heavy at all.  Definitely something attention catching when you wear these colours out, and I personally find them very chic.  I would also compare these to the NARS matte velvet pencils and Chanel Rouge Allure Mat Velvet in terms of the feeling, and the NARS pure matte lipsticks feel more matte compared to the Lip Maestros.

For swatches in the previous entry - click here.

All products used (all Giorgio Armani unless stated otherwise)

Face - Master Primer SPF40 PA+++, Maestro Fusion Makeup 04 (I applied and built up 2 layers, but didn't set with powder), cle de peau concealer Ivory

* I am impressed again by how beautifully the Maestro foundation photographs.  It's really smoothing and makes my skin look flawless. *

Cheeks - MUFE Mat Bronzer, Mirco Fil Loose Powder (pink) to highlight the cheeks and add a subtle touch of pink

Lips - Lip Maestro in 400 and 402

Eyes - NARS Primer, Eyes to Kill Intense 09 (applied on the lids with a MAC217 brush), THREE Eye Doll Pencil 07

Lashes - two pairs of Ardel 120 layered

Brows - Shu Uemura brow pencil 09, Shu Uemura brow manicure ash brown

A special mention on this THREE pencil which you have seen me raving about in recent entries.  My gf gifted me with it recently, she has bought it during her holiday to Japan... and these pencils are pricey - but the formula and the color are definitely worth it.  There are all these tiny multi-color shimmers that make you look at it, at first look, it's a khaki gold pencil, but when you look closer there are little fine bits of pink and gold.  Once the pencil sets, it didn't budge at all.

Hope you enjoyed this LOTD and quick overview.

I have been enjoying color on my lips for the most part of this year.... I think it really adds to the whole look, and gives some personality to my regular makeup.  Let me know if you would like a more detailed rundown of my fave reds, and my fave natural color lippies for the year.  Right off the cuff, I can tell you there will be lots of NARs and Diors involved.   :p

Thanks for reading!

The Giorgio Armani Lip Maestros will launch in Singapore from Jan 2013.   I expect them to retail for about $50.

Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro in 400 & 402 [Photos & Swatches]

Hi hi

I purchased two red Lip Maestro recently while I was in Hong Kong.  They retail for about SGD$50 each.  As I mentioned in my swatches entry - the brights and reds are way more suited for the formular and finish of the Lip Maestro - that rich velvety matte finish with a deep or bright red is really way more attractive than the usual nudes and beiges.  That's just my opinion of course.  And not surprisingly, everyone else seem to think the same way - all the gorgeous brights and reds were sold out everywhere in HK, only the browny nudes and tan shades were left.

I thought I had to wait for the Singapore release of these Lip Maestros - cos 402 which is the red I really wanted, was OOS everywhere.  Imagine my surprise when I went back to the very same counter a couple of days later and the staff there told me they had stock for 402.  (FYI 402 is the shade on the ad campaign it is a bright bright red) and I quickly grabbed one for myself.  I had already purchased 400, a slightly deeper red.

For collection information and more photos on the Lip Maestro, click my feature entry here.

For swatches of all the Lip Maestro swatches, click here.

The sponge tip applicator is longish and fine, making it quite easy for a precise application.  You really just need the tiniest amount of this and spread it evenly on your lips.  If you need more, then layer it bit by bit.  The overall finish should be quite velvety matte (I can't say this enough) and not all gooey, or else it will go all over your teeth.

Here's a slap on type of swatch - it looks a little shiny due to the sheer thickness.

But you see, the velvety matte finish comes through after I dabbed and spread the product a bit with my fingertips.  And this is how it looks like in the ad campaigns.  (link link)

Here's a comparison with other rich matte reds and similar products in my stash:

Lancome Mat Cashmere 300 (from their Fall 2012 collection, Limited edition) review here  -- very similar in terms of texture and finish. but this is limited edition,  and comes in only this shade.

Tom Ford Lip Lacquer in Cherry Lush - review here - has that same shade of bright red as 402 but it has this pinky red undertone whereas 402 has an orangey undertone.

Chanel Rouge Allure Lacque Dragon (discontinued) has the same depth and shade as 400 - Temptalia has a comparison - but both have very different finishes, Chanel Dragon has a satin finish, while 400 is of course velvety matte.

Lip swatches:

They are pretty long lasting, and really amazing.  As Lisa Eldridge says, she loves to wear a red lip when wearing just a tee, jeans and going out to run errands.  I agree.  Who says that a red lip, whether it's Chanel or Giorgio Armani, is only confined to special ocassions?  It really makes one look groomed and brightened up without having to do much.

I hope this rundown has been useful, and I will be posting a LOTD entry next.

The Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro will be available in Singapore from Jan 2013.

Thanks for reading!

YSL Glossy Stains: All Six of Them! [Swatches & LOTDs]

Hi hi!

I have somehow accumulated six of the YSL Glossy Stains over time, I purchased a couple of them (I think 11 and 19) while the rest I had received from attending various YSL events as they launched in Singapore.

So here they all are.  I think my fave YSL Glossy Stains are the peachy pink shades - they apply evenly and show up on the lips very vibrantly.  The pale shades like 19 tend to look a little streaky and my own lip color still shows through.    The dark shades like 22, applies streaky too and you probably need to wait some time before building up each layer of color.

These glossy stains are very long lasting, and deliver great colors.  I have recently featured a cheaper dupe, the Loreal lip caress shine - they are very very similar in terms of consistency - click here for my swatches.  However, I think I still prefer the YSL ones, they feel more luxe and comes in a wider range of colors.

In terms of the application - I noticed that as you apply each layer, and purse your lips together, the formula gets a little thicker, and that's when the color seems to become richer and creamy.  They also feel a little cooling and very moist when first applied.  The applicator is perfectly shaped for direct application onto your lips.

Here are swatches on my hands:

and some mega swatches on my lips:

I was a little hasty in applying 22 - and this is the slightly patchy results.  And the patchiness is showing up more in the pictures than in real life.
But I see potential in this shade - think all the dark vampy lips I featured in my previous entry here.   This is certainly in the same color family, in a totally different texture and finish.

All products used (all YSL unless stated)

Face: Flash Radiance Skincare Brush, Touche Eclat liquid foundation, Lancome Dual Finish Foundation, touch eclat highlighter pen

Cheeks: D&G The Bronzer 01, Blush Radiance 06, Boreal Palette Face Highlighter

Lips: all the Glossy Stains mentioned in this entry

Eyes: NARS Primer, Boreal Palette Artic Night (only the brown shade all over the lids), YSL Waterproof pencil 01

Lashes: two pairs of Ardel 120 lashes layered

Which is your fave YSL Glossy Stain featured here?

I highly recommend these lipsticks - they are really innovative (before the rest of 'em follow suit of course) and you won't be disappointed.

Thanks for looking!

Butter London: Come to Bed Red

Hi hi!

Sometime back (several months back actually) I had ordered Butter London Come to Bed Red from ArglyDuckling.com - the service was great and delivery was swift.  It is great that we have way more options of shopping online locally these days, sometimes you suddenly and randomly want to get some nailpolish or other beauty product, and you don't have to stress over how and where to get it.  Just order it online!

Come to Bed Red is showing up warmer in my pictures, in real life it is a true blue red.  Opaque in two coats, but it has that slightly jelly formula.

The consistency is creamy, and application is a breeze.

That's all I have for this entry.  More soon!  Thanks for looking!

LOTD: Shu Uemura Unmasked Palette Pink

Hi hi

Today, I am doing a look featuring several products from the Shu Uemura Unmasked and Blossom Dream collection (more information here).  It is turning out to be a very matte warm smokey look.  I am quite impressed with the soft and very blendable matte colors from the palette.  I didn't use any of the pink shades from the palette (though I did try to use them as blushers, which worked just as well).   The warm matte smokey look went surprisingly well with the orange lips, as you will see in the pics below later.

Here are some close ups of the products and swatches:

Unmasked Pink Palette  -

I think you can see the texture of the eyeshadows here, even in the swatches - they are very soft, creamy looking.  It is so finely milled you can't really any powdery fallout or particles at all.

When I was blending the eyeshadows, I didn't have any issues with chalkiness, and all the colors are very pigmented.

Here are swatches of the blush and the lipstick:

The lipstick can be a little tricky to wear depending on your skintone - but your best bet would be to apply it from the tube, and blend out the edges around the lipline.  The formula is also a little tricky, because it might get streaky - so careful layering is needed.

The blush is very soft and has a subtle pearlised glow.  It is very easy to wear, and suits light to medium skintones.

Swatch of the bright orange lipstick on my lips.

All products used - all shu uemura unless stated otherwise

Face - instant glow skin perfecting cream, smooth fit fluid foundation 774, set with Chanel ultra-fine loose powder

Lips - rouge unlimited Bright Orange

Cheeks - MUFE Mat Bronzer, glow on P Soft Coral

Eyes - NARS Primer, Unmasked Palette Pink, THREE Eye Doll pencil 07 (mad love the THREE pencil!!)

Lashes - Natural Volume 01

OMG -- just realised in this close up pic of my eyes, you can see clearly the only shimmering product I used on my eyes in this look - the THREE eye doll pencil which my gf gifted me.  Look at my lower eyelids. The little pink and golden bits peeking through my lower lashes.

And the rest of the look - I am very amazed by the quality of these matte shadows - they look really smooth, and blendable.  There are two other palettes in this collection, I am not quite sure how they would perform, but I am very happy with the rich browns and pinks in this particular palette.

That's all and hope you found this entry helpful.

The collection will be available in Jan 2013.

Illamasqua Sophie Powder Blush & all my Illamasqua blushers swatched!

I had ordered Illamasqua's Sophie blush online sometime back... a long long time back. Out of the 17 blushers they listed on their site, I have accumulated 12 Illamasqua blushers over the years, with a couple which are probably discontinued.  I will be showing you all swatches at the end of this entry.

I love Illamasqua blushers because they are extremely pigmented, and they are very long lasting. Most of their blushers are matte - I only have 2 shimmering blushers from them - including Sophie.  The other one is Ambition.   I think I prefer their matte blushes - they blend into the skin beautifully, and even the palest pink shows up intensely on me.

SOPHIE is described as a Golden Coral Shimmer.  The shimmer bits are more obvious in the pan and they don't really translate onto your skin.  Unless you pile on a lot of the blush - but then the coral would be too much... so when you apply this lightly, the shimmer bits don't actually get picked up.

how it looks like overall - note you just need the tiniest amount when using these extremely pigmented blushers.

<strong>and an armful of all my illamasqua blushes and one lone bronzer swatched -

close up by sections -

Tweak - deep hot pink

Panic - true red (discontinued)

Ambition - neutral brown pink, shimmer

Sophie - golden coral, shimmer

Lover - Soft Apricot

Tremble - Soft lilac pink

Chased - Bright rose pink

Hussy - Bright candy pink

Bronzer Writhe -  Golden tan

Rumor - Soft matte brown, contour shade

Katie (one of my faves!) - Soft Candy Pink

Naked Rose (one of my faves!) - Natural beige Pink

Hope you find these swatches helpful, and thanks for reading!

Illamasqua Complement Eyeshadow Palette [Photos, Swatches, Step by Step]

Hi hi!

A while back, I had ordered Illamasqua Complement eyeshadow palette - I didn't know that it contains a cream eyeshadow!  But I love the combination of colors in this palette - the champagne color, the matte blending shade, and the dark metallic purpley brown shade.

Here are the shade names for your reference:

Slink  - the shimmering champagne shade

Focus - the metallic medium brown shade

Queen of the Night - dark deep purpley brown with purple shimmers

Forgiveness - matte reddish brown

swatches -

here is the placement of colors that I used in my eyelook -

1. apply the creamy brown color on the lids as a base color, it is very blendable and very sheer once blended out

2. apply highlight and crease shades on the eyes

3. apply the darkest shade on the lids

4. blend blend blend!

close up of the complete look.
lashes, brows, liner!

and here's a weird facial expression to complete the look>

overall, a soft smokey look, not too dark, though you can definitely build up the colors more.
I went for a orangey nude lipstick in this LOTD.

all products used:

Face - Illamasqua Skinbase foundation shade 04, Chanel ultra fine loose powder, Laura Mercier secret camoflage concealer SC03

Cheeks - Illamasqua Sophie powder blush, Rumor to contour

Lips - Illamasqua Obey lipstick, topped with Chanel Extrait de Gloss Genie

Eyes - NARS Primer, Illamasqua Complement palette

Liner - Solone Gel-Like Smoody Pencil ES06 Red Wine
Lashes - Shu Uemura Natural Volume 01

I hope this entry has been helpful, and thanks for looking!

LOTD: The Body Shop Winter Trend Look

Hi hi

Today I have a quick look to share with you, using mostly products from The Body Shop's Winter Trend Makeup Collection.  (click here for information and swatches).  I went for a metallic smokey look, a red lippy but I kept the rest of the face quite clean (no blusher).

Let me take you through the eyelook:

1. prime my eyelids with the highlight shade as indicated - I used a fluffy eyeshadow brush (mac 224)

2. apply lids color as indicated - this shade can be prone to fallout - so I was careful to lay the eyeshadow onto my lids, and when they are 'pressed' onto my lids, I slowly blend out the edges. Blending out the edges where the highlight and lid colors meet so there are no harsh lines.  I used a Louise Young LY38 tapered brush for this step.

3. apply the outer corner shade for some definition to the eyelook.  I used the same LY38 brush.

4. apply a little inner corner highlight with the shade as indicated in the picture below.

5. I lined my eyes with MAC Pearlglide liner Petrol Blue (I wanted a pop of color, hence didn't use the matching metallic eye pencils from the same collection).

6. Apply lashes, and fill in my brows.

This is the finished look.

On my cheeks, I dusted the Dazzling Rocks in Golden Copper on my cheeks. I used a matte contour shade (Illamasqua Rumor) on my forehead and sides of my face.  The overall effect is a warm and glowy look.  I don't think the Dazzling Rocks is too shimmering, if you buffed it lightly.

A close up of the eye look, and the cheeks.

And one more 'I dunno what is this' look.  Heheh.

All products used:

Face - Ettusais Mineral White BB Cream, Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum foundation 51, Lancome Dual Finish powder

Eyes - MUFE Eyeshadow primer, The Bodyshop Smokey Moonstone palette, MAC Pearlglide liner in Petrol Blue, Ardel 120 lashes (I layered two pairs)

Lips - The Bodyshop Colorglide lipshine in 12 Ruby Sparkle

Cheeks - Illamasqua Rumor, The Bodyshop Dazzling Rocks in Golden Copper

I hope you enjoyed this look, and thanks for reading!

About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.
