FAQ & DISCLAIMER

About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

LOTD: Smokey Matte with Lorac Pro Palette

    Hi hi!

I will try to do at least 3 different looks with the Lorac Pro Palette.  The first one is a dark smokey matte eyelook.  Mattes can be tricky to work with, so here, I build up each layer, and try to blend softly so I don't end up with patchy streaks.  The shadows are super smooth, and didn't have any fallout at all.

On the rest of the face, I keep the cheeks and lips to a very pale pink, all the more to emphasize the matte brown smokey eyes.  I love love love mad  love this palette, and if you could, try to get it!

For pictures and swatches of this palette, click on this entry here

For your information, I only used ONE brush to create this look, so I started with the lightest shade first. I used my new Hakuhodo brush, in J142.  It is a dense soft fluffy tapered brush.  It is amazing.

I first applied the Lorac eyeshadow primer which comes with the palette.  Then I lightly brushed Nude on my brow bones.  This is followed by the Taupe shade, which I used on the crease and also to sort of outline how high I want the eyeshadow to go.

Then I intensified the color on the lids by using Sable.. a warm brown.. and closer to the lash line, I used Espresso.  I patted on Espresso... and with the same brush, the tapered tip, I used Black as a liner.. (Do note in the following pic, the colors are very washed out... the black is really a matte JET BLACK, and not brown as shown in the pic.. Espresso is a blacken coffee brown).

    This is the completed look.

    All products used:

Base - YSL Touch Eclat foundation, Chanel Ultra Fine translucent loose powder

Cheeks - Dior Zenith, Dior Rosy Glow, Diorskin Nude Shimmer

Lips - Makeup Store Redwood lipstick

Eyes - LORAC Primer, LORAC Pro Palette

Liner - Makeup Store Chocolate Cheesecake

    Lashes - Shu Uemura Farfarllina

That's all, and thanks for reading!

    Three Hakuhodo J-Series Eye Brushes

Several weeks back, Joey and I put in an order for a bunch of the latest Hakuhodo J-Series brushes.  I picked 3 of the eye brushes, I did a look using just ONE of the brush, will feature in a LOTD entry later on.

The Hakuhodo brushes are really the Rolls Royce of makeup brushes.  I have two other of them, and you can really feel that they are superbly made, and the hairs are of the softest and best quality.

I picked all the white goat hair brushes, because these are my fave for eyeshadows.  I also picked these soft dense fluffy brushes because I can use one just to apply and blend eyeshadows.  These brushes are slightly shorter than the MAC full sized brushes, and really solid.  In actual fact, they don't cost much more than MAC brushes, in particular these J series ones.  There are pricier options on the Hakuhodo site, and you can pick and choose which suits your needs and budget.

    Photos and information below:

J5523 Eye Shadow Brush Round & Flat USD$18.00  (link)

The bristles made from goat are soft on your skin and provide moderate resilience. This brush can be used for the upper eyelid area and produces great coloring and also can be used with all types of products - liquid or cream base makeup and even powder.

J146 Eye Shadow Brush Round USD$17.00 (link)

    16mm

The bristles are made from resilient yet soft goat that can produce great coloring.

Smudging and blending colors can be easily achieved. Also ideal for highlighter.

J142 Eye Shadow Brush Round USD$18.00 (link)

    18mm

The bristles are made from resilient yet soft goat that can produce great coloring.

Smudging and blending colors can be easily achieved. Also ideal for highlighter.

LOTD: Very Fresh & Neutral with Makeup Store Enamor Eyeshadow

    Hi hi!

This is a neutral (yes, what's new ya?) look featuring the new Makeup Store holiday and fall collection products.

Enamor is a neutral taupey shade that's very easy to wear.  It is very soft and smooth, and contains the finest shimmer bits that are pinky bronze in shade.  The shimmer is very very fine, and reflects just enough light to make the shade very dimensional and interesting.   I feel like the Makeup Store eyeshadows are a tad underrated, and if you have the chance, go swatch them in stores, some of the shades are truly worth getting, though I thought a few of them are on the chalky side.  They do have a great range of colors, and I am glad that I got Enamor here to feature.  It is one of those colors which I would categorise as my 'staples' all over the lid shades.

In this look, I swept Enamor all over my lids.  And then I built up more color on my lids close to the lashline.  When the color is blended out, it looks like a pinky brown, and I blended it quite high up towards the browbone.

I defined my eyes using Makeup Store Chocolate Cheesecake.  Like I mentioned in my other Makeup Store LOTD, this liner is a must have!  I think this might well be limited edition... and grab yours while it's still in stock!  I kept the lower lids completely bare to keep the overall look very light and fresh.

Rest of the face is kept very simple, pink cheeks, and a orangey dab of gloss.  I wiped off most of the gloss, because I overestimated the amount of I applied, and it was all gooey, and sticky.  But after I dabbed away most of it with a tissue, and just rubbed in the color with my fingers, I ended up with a orangey and shimmery look.

On my cheeks, I wanted a healthy glow, so I used Tom Ford Shape & Illuminate Intensity 02, and YSL Blush Radiance in 06.  Who says you can't mix pinks and peaches in one look?

All products used will be listed at the end of the entry.

    All products used:

Base: Burberry Sheer Foundation 04, Chanel Ultra fine translucent loose powder

Cheeks: Tom Ford Shape & Illuminate Intensity 02, YSL Blush Radiance 06

Lips: Makeup Store Gloss Lips in Dame

Eyes: Makeup Forever Eye Prime, Makeup Store Enamor eyeshadow

Liner: Makeup Store Chocolate Cheesecake liner

    Lashes: Shu Uemura Farfarllina

NARS x Andy Warhol Collection for Holiday 2012: NEW YORK DOLLS Nail Polish

    Hi hi!

in this entry, I am featuring NARS nail polish in New York Dolls from the latest NARS x Andy Warhol collection for holiday 2012.  For collection information, please check out these entries. (link link link)

New York Dolls is a deep purple that has a slight grey tinge to it.  It is bright without screaming for attention.  It also has an excellent formula, being opaque in one coat, though I painted 2 coats here for swatches. There are 4 other shades released with this huge collection, and if you ask me, this purple is a must have.

FYI, New York Dolls is an American punk rock band founded in 1971. Here's one of their album covers.

NARS polishes will retail for S$30 each when the brand launches in 2 weeks at Tangs Orchard.

For all my other NARS coverage, click here here here.

    Hope this has been helpful!

    Thanks for looking!

LOTD: Going Green with Makeup Store Pistachio Biscotti

Hallo!  Just a quick simple look featuring 3 products from Makeup Store's fall collection products - mainly the eyeshadows and lip products.  My friend has also highly requested that I do a look featuring this particular eyeshadow, Pistachio Biscotti.  The eyeshadow itself is soft and has a satiny finish.  It is not super shimmery, and pretty easy to work with.

I used a colored base with the eyeshadow, though I did sheer out the base (I used Shiseido shimmering cream in GR707), so it is not as though I need it to add more color.  I just wanted to give the eyeshadow a bit more dimension, seeing as I did not use any other eyeshadow on my eyes for this look, not even any crease color, and no brow bone highlight color.  I figure that with the lashes and the liner, my eyes would look defined enough without having to use too many eyeshadows at once.

I defined my eyes with Makeup Store pencil in Chocolate Cheesecake.  It is a deep taupe shade, very very wearable, and I think everyone will LOVE this pencil. It gives the right amount of definition, and also adds a subtle sheen.  It is soft enough to line both my upper and lower lids, and smudged out slightly.

On the face, I went for a natural finish foundation, and so I applied Lancome's Teint Miracle (one of my all time fail-proof foundation) and lightly set it with Clarins Skin Illusion Mineral Foundation.

Then I sculpted my cheeks with Tom Ford's Shade & Illuminate in shade 02, which works beautifully on me.  The contour shade is a little bit scarily dark on me, but it blends out so seamlessly and you can't really tell but the effect is there.  The highlight shade is a very smooth subtle sheen, as you will see in the pictures below.  I used the cream contour/highlight product on powdered skin, and it didn't cake and looks just fine.

Loving the sheer red gloss that isn't too bright on my lips. It gives a nice stained juicy look, which is always a healthy and wearable look for the lips.

Overall, I love doing a colored eye like this, just one color, and keeping the rest of the face very clean and flawless.  It is grown up and girly, without going all crazy rainbow on the eyes.  Keep the lips colored but sheer, and the cheeks sculpted (or I try my best to be...haha).

All products used will be listed at the end of this entry.

    All products used:

Base - Lancome Teint Miracle, Clarins Skin Illusion Mineral Foundation

Cheeks - Tom Ford Shape & Illuminate Intensity 2.0, Illamasqua Naked Rose powder blush

Lips - Makeup Store Gloss 2C1 Geranium

Eyes - NARS pro prime eyeshadow base, Shiseido Shimmering Cream GR707, Makeup Store Pistachio Biscotti

Liner - Makeup Store Chocolate Cheesecake (THIS IS AWESOME!)

    Lashes - Shu Uemura Farfarllina

    ** I didn't have to use any concealer! **

Hope you find this helpful, and thanks for looking!

Three Makeup Store Nail Polishes [Photos & Swatches]

    Hi hi!

This entry features three Makeup Store nail polishes.  They retail for S$22 each.  I find the formula of most, if not all, of the Makeup Store polishes very very smooth, pigmented, and they have a mind-boggling array of colors and finishes.

    Shown here are three shades:

Elaine - which is a fuschia purpley pink... it has a slight sheen which isn't very obvious after applying on the nails.

Kaja - which is a pastel cornflower blue, with a almost holographic sheen, but I think it is most silver and gold.. this is really gorgeous.. and if you are into all these glossy, glassy holographic polishes, you will love Kaja.

And lastly, Malin - which is a pale beige, very creamy and has a slight pearlised sheen. It is quite thick, but if you apply two even coats, you get a chic nude polish.

In these swatches, I used my Nail Tek base, and Seche Vite topcoat, along with 2 coats of polishes.  They are all almost one coater, but I applied 2 coats for swatching purposes.

Highly recommend the Makeup Store polishes.  The quality is great and the colors are just awesome!

    Enjoy these swatches!

    Off to Beijing!

    Hi hi!

Just a quick note to let you know that I am flying off to Beijing (and Chengdu to see pandas!) tonight, and will be gone for about 10 days.

I will be posting a bunch of entries before I leave for the airport... so don't be shocked when you see a series of notifications!

I might be able to instagram from there... and maybe post some random updates.

Maybe I will post a couple of outfit entries, but nothing very exciting on the makeup front.

It is going to be cold, and I don't have any intention to slap on any eye makeup.

If I have time I will post what's in my makeup bags, or some hotel room tour entries if anyone is keen.

I can't wait to come back, because have a couple of EXCITING events lined up for the blog.. and also I will be running a couple of giveaways!

Meanwhile, be safe, and have an awesome weekend!
