About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

    My Travel Makeup

    Hi hi!

Just thought I would share what I will be bringing along with me for my short short Hong Kong trip next week.

Yup, I am not bringing ANYTHING.

That's because I intend to BUY everything in Hong Kong.  All the makeup!  There are so many MU brands in stand alone stores, Shu Uemura, Estee Lauder, NARS, multi-brand stores like Faceessss, SASA and Bourjour at every street corner, I need an EMPTY luggage just to lug home what I will buy there.

Usually what I bring depends on the trip in mind.  I prolly bring more makeup if I am going for a longer period, and if I know the destination place does not sell much  makeup (for eg when I go on beach vacay in Ko Samui or smth)... or if I know the destination place will sell expensive stuff due to exchange rate etc etc... but when you go to Hong Kong, you just buy buy buy!

    **************************************

Ok, seriously...I do need to bring some stuff.  I am only including the MU items (no toiletries, skincare, clothes, perfume, watever...) and I think I can narrow down to this much.  I do intend to dress up everyday when I am there, cos we are going to take lotsa random pics, and well, who wants to look bad on a holiday, right, even though this is technically a shopping trip and not so much a touristy sight seeing trip.   One of my travel peeves is to see people who place 'comfort over style' and use that as an excuse to wear  nothing but the same fluro windbreaker & sneakers the whole duration of the trip.  By the end of everything, they look the same in every picture and smell like it too.  Geesh.  I mean, that's doing no justice to the nice scenery and you have the photographs to show for it.

Let me go through the items and maybe 'explain'?  See, it's all sooooo deeply superficial.

Primer - SANA Pore Putty (not pictured, it decided to MIA).

Foundation - Maquillage Long Lasting Stick (easy to carry, not a liquid, no spillage)

    Concealer  palette

Power - MAC Sculpt & Shape, Cheeky Bronze msf (cos I intend to haul NARS blushers there)

No setting powder cos intend to buy there or borrow my gf's La Mer.

    Mascara - UD sample

One pair of falsies & Adhesive.  They can last the whole trip.

One eyeshadow quad.  (again, sure to buy eyeshadows there..so I am not bringing my larger palettes)

Eyeshadow primer - TFSI, and MUFE Aqua Cream

Liners - MAC pencils, Loreal superliner

Assorted Lipsticks - Reds, Brights, Nudes

    Brow stuff

Many of the items above my sister also can share, such as the brow stuff, concealer, eyeshadow primers, liners, and brushes.

They all fit nicely into one bag.  And all the assorted brushes fit into the container which came with a Uniqlo tee I bought in Tokyo.

I intend to hand carry both (or maybe check in the brushes container).  But it is such an early morning flight, I will do my MU before landing.... so I might lug the  brushes along with me on the flight.

I will also be packing empty containers (like tupperwares) to store all the new MU I bought, so I can check them all in the luggage and won't be damaged.

Do you have any travel tips to share, when it comes to MU?

    Thanks for looking!

    Haul! No Makeup, Just Fashion

    Yay!

If you read this little blog long enough, you know I shop a lot besides makeup, and I don't usually show 90% of the non-MU stuff I bought, simply because it's not very relevant...

Anyhow.... 2 pairs of Ray Bans were purchased, one for me and one for my sis... and I also got a cute FCUK blouse.

I wanted the Ray Bans aviator because I kind of want an update on my old pair, which has greyish gradient tinted lens.  Today I got a pair of gold framed pinkish brown one, and the sister got a black framed see thru brownish one. We got them at an optical store in Chinatown, simply because it is at these old school shops that you find the greatest and more classic Ray Bans, without the commericalised price tags.

Wearing a pair of nice stylish shades really distracts from the fact that you aren't wearing any makeup.  And these 'sheer' shades provide sun protection, and enough coverage and you don't really need to take them off indoors.

And this Fcuk blouse is cute!  I think it goes with anything and can be casual and formal depending on what bottom you match it with.  A denim shorts, great for summer, and a black pencil skirt will take you to the office boardroom.  Excuse the flatten chest area and track pants cos I was roaming about town today in my sports bra+jogging gear (though I wasn't doing anything like jogging at all).  Ha ha ha.

Yup, that's all, what are some of your recent fave fashion purchases??

    Thanks for looking!

LOTD & OOTD: Celebrating with the Girls

    Hi hi,

Just a quick entry to show you my MU and outfit when I went out for dinner and hanging around with the girls (my sister and gf last night).  It was the latter's bday, we watched SATC 2, so hence the 'special' dedicated entry.  :)

Let's get on with the LOTD:  I used only one eyeshadow in terms of color, which is nothing revoluntionary if you are familiar with my LOTDs by now.

    Foundation ---

SANA Pore Putty Base, Maquillage long lasting stick foundation, MUFE Concealer palette no1, La Mer Powder  (I used MAC 109 to apply and blend)

    Cheeks ---

NARS Nico, Sin and Mac Sculpt & Shape powder

    Lips ---

OCC Lip Tar in Grandma, and a little of MAC's Nice Mix Up tri colored lipglass

    Eyes ---

Stila's Dulce Luche (?) e/s, inuovi Platinum (applied and blended using MAC 222 brush)

    Liner & Lashes ---

Palz & Shu Uemura Lashes (yup it is 2 pairs, but I didn't overlap the lashes, I was kind of extending the 'width' to get the exact measurement and volume I wanted to accentuate my eyes)

    MAC Blackline

    YSL Faux Cils

    And the OOTD:

Black Lace Tee from Warehouse (sz 12, sale price $59)

Grey Tank from FCUK underneath (from years ago)

'Skinny' jeans from River Island (sz 14, sale price $55)

    Pink Heels (New Look)

Poser Panasonic Headphones courtesy of the Bro who helped to take this pic for me  LOL

And a pic of us goofing about:

and we bought this for the gf.

Quick thoughts about SATC2? If you want to compare it to the TV series, of course, the TV series is better.  It would be like comparing apples and oranges.  Totally different.  I guess critics who are quick to dismiss this movie should prolly realise that the movie is really just entertaining, fluffy, exaggerated, totally fictional.  I enjoyed the movie for all its entertainment value, and overdose of decadence and pretense, and if you take it in that light, then relax, and just enjoy the show.

I need to get to work (which is why I am up so early)..... and well, technically holidays have started, but why is it that I feeel a sense of dread looming ahead?

I will be posting the FASIO eyeshadow giveaway winner later today.

That's all, and thanks for reading.

    Haul! KORRES, Maybelline, Loreal :)

Hi hi!  This is a crazy sale sale sale kind of haul.

Many of you might know of the Korres Lip Butter promotion, it is usually $21, but now going at $12.90.  I have heard so much about this product on YT, and well, time to jump on the bandwagon.  So I grabbed three.  I choose all the non-colored types, because several of these lip butters are actually rather pigmented.  The three I got are MANGO, GUAVA and JASMINE. If I am not wrong, this offer is til 28 June.  Or it is tomorrow???  LOL.

Then I twittered about the JL/ Robinson's 30% off Loreal and Maybelline promotion, and so I went to grab some items too.  Majority are for stocking up...but I didn't check expiry dates!  Oh well.  Between my sisters and myself, we can use up these items pretty fast.

    From Loreal:

Two Loreal Superliner in Brown (UP $18.90)  these are for my gf.

Some Loreal Revita Lift samples (freebie!)

    From Maybelline:

Five (yup, 5 of them!)  Volume Express Mascara (UP $18.90)

Two Impact Express Felt Tip Liner (UP $16.90)

Two Makeup Remover (UP $11.90)  these are for another girlie!

One Water Shine Collagen lipstick No 224 (Freebie!!)

    Miscellaneous:

Neutrogena Oil Free Makeup Remover ($13.90)   I want to try this out during my trip in June.

    Fuso holographic polish ($4.00)

Coleur Inc Nail Polish (Chara 98 & Forest Green 66)  ($4.30 each)  -----  They remind me so much of Jade is the New Black and Suzy Says Feng Shui!!  Shall let you know if they are similar or not.  Haha... :p

Coool holographic nail polish ($4) from Fuso!

Yup.  That's all.  I am going to take a quick nap.... going to celebrate the gf's bday later, watching SATC at 1130pm, and followed by some crazy stuff.  Maybe check out Sephora at Great World City............ LOL.  So there might be one more LOTD/ or OOTD kind of entry up later or tomorrow.

    Thanks for reading!

LOTD: How To Pull Off "Bright" Lips & Maybe Random Ramble

Products used --- I am using 90% of the products mentioned in the MAY FAVES entry.   And if you are intrigued by the nails shown above, click HERE to find out  more.

Smokey eyes using only one color: MUFE #14 Aqua Cream as a base. And the darkest color from Chanel's Mystic Eyes Quad.

    Liner: MAC Blackline Pencil

    Cheeks: MAC Instant Chic

Foundation: Sana Pore Putty Base, Maquillage Long Lasting Stick foundation, Covergirl Oil Pressed Oil powder

About the lip colors, I think anyone, really, anyone can pull off a bright lipcolor.  I am featuring a more coral---pink type of lip color, which is more flattering than a blue toned pink color.  I find that it helps if you keep the rest of your face relatively clean, and eyes can be smokey and all that, but if you keep it simple, like just one main color all over, I think you can go quite crazy with the lips and get away with it.  And add on oddles of lashes, or pile on the mascara, whichever you prefer.

I am using Chanel's Genial lined with MUFE 18C Aqua lip pencil.

And the paler peachy coral color is YSL RV in Peach Faubourg.

More price friendly lipsticks in the same color family can be found at MAC.  Or Loreal or Maybelline.

And one last point of 'discussion'.... yup.. a very deeply superficial discussion, if you are into taking all these LOTD pictures, the most important tip?

    >>>>>>  CHIN DOWN! Trust me, if done properly, it is a lot more flattering that the pointing camera way high up... so position your camera/ lens at about eye level.. and chin down slightly... then watch your jawline all becomes more defined in the photographs.  It is just more subtle, natural and you don't go cock eye from straining your eyes to look upwards at the lens.  Also raise your brows slightly for instant face lift effect.    IMO of course.... to each her own ways. :)

    Case in point:

Yup, I hope this has been helpful, and thanks for reading!

    May 2010 Faves!

Hi hi,  here are the products which I have really enjoyed and used quite often this month.  The month of April, well, is another haul-filled month, MUFE haul, MAC Haul, Nail Polish haul. I also attended a couple of fab events got some great stuff which I look forward to trying out.  I also have a a skincare review which will be posted in another week's time, so stay tuned for that.

You might have already noticed these products being mentioned in recent LOTDs, and may not come as a surprise at all.  Some are old, some are new.

    • Sana Pore Putty Base (not sure, bought this in Japan last yr, but it is readily available at all Watsons or SASA) - I prolly should do a review on this, let me know if you are interested, and I will do one.

    • MUFE Concealer Palette in No1 ($56 I think) - This is like having a bunch of MAC Studio Finish concealers at your disposal. It is thick  but great for my undereyes and redness around the nose.  Doesn't cake either, for me at least.   Notice how I abandon the use of my MAC Studio Sculpt so abruptly.  Hahha.

    • MAC Instant Chic Blush ($27 I think)  Great unique color that you can just slap on without worrying about being too strong or whatever.  It also fits into my own bright coral obsession lately.

    • MAC Blackline ($27 I think) - Love this for smudgy lower eyes, and it sets and doesn't bleed or mess up.

    • Maquillage PK715 Glossy Rouge ($49)  - Perfect lipstick to wear over anything color and make it wearable.  I like to layer this over Sonnet for some shine and creaminess.

    • Bourjois Mineral Brush ($12)  -  I did a giveaway, because I love this brush! So cute, so portable, so soft, and blends EVERYTHING, cream, powder, you name it.

    • Chanel's Mystic Eyes Quad ($84) - Perfect quad.  I would totally  recommend getting at least one of these Chanel quads.  Quality, great colors, and perfect for travel and touch ups too.

    • Blackberry Storm (paid less than $100, depending on promo and usage plans). LOL.  I have this phone for almost one year.  It connects me to twitter, email, FB, keeps me company with songs, web browser, allows me to twipic spam, and just keeps me connected.  I think my fingers are attached to my BB like 80% of the time, it's sick.

Yup, that's about it.  I can't name any fave nail polish, cos I have been such a nail polish sl*t this month,  every color I love, and I can't decide.

If you have any questions or would like to request a review of any items mentioned, leave a comment below!

What are your MAY faves??  Share!
