About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

Makeup Removal Made Easy Feat. FANCL Mild Cleansing Oil & Facial Washing Powder

Hi hi, this will be a picture heavy entry featuring some Fancl cleansing products.  I have been using the Fancl Mild Cleansing Oil for at least 5 years.  It has served me well, removing my makeup gently and thoroughly.  I have earlier raved about it last year, in this entry HERE.

It is a product which I highly recommend whenever people ask me what I use to remove my makeup. I have dabbled with remover wipes, my NARS cleansing lotion but the FANCL Mild Cleansing Oil is like an old friend whom I can always depend on to do a good job.  In fact, both my sisters and my girlfriends all use this to remove their makeup too.

Besides the cleansing oil, I will also be showing how the Facial Washing Powder will be used to wash your face after makeup removal.   Let's start with the Mild Cleansing Oil.

Fancl releases LE editions of these products seasonally, usually in collaboration with artists to decorate the usual packaging with artistic designs. They cost the same as the regular packaging ones.  I normally purchase two bottles of the cleansing oil at one go,  because you save some moolah if you purchase two bottles.  And if you are a FANCL club member like I am, you can offset a few dollars off the total cost of each purchase too.

This time round, the bottles are adorned with colorful illustrations of Japanese fashion illustrator, Licaco. The illustrations on the washing powder bottle show a "Samba Dance" while the cleansing oil bottles show a graceful ballet dancer. Here are the products up close:

The facial washing powder LIGHT is the same as the normal one, just that it provides a more refreshing after feel.

The regular packaging looks like this:

Most Fancl products come with a sticker, which you can use to mark  the opening date of the product.  As their products are preservative free, they have a shorter shelf life.  These cleansing oils have a life span of 4 months after you open it.  So as an example, this is the sticker --- but I usually am able to finish the product in less than 4 months, especially when my sisters also use the same bottle.

How do you use a cleansing oil? I first started using cleansing oils with the Shu Uemura ones, but soon found those too rich for my daily makeup removal. Basically you start with a dry face, and rub the cleansing oil onto your face.  Then after 'dissolving' the makeup, you use some water to emulsify the oil, this breaks down the makeup and dirt on your face.  You can see these steps in action in the following pictures:

The mild cleansing oil contains "Meadow Foam Oil which aids the removal of keratin plugs over time for a clearer, smoother complexion."  It is suitable for all skin types. Click HERE for more information!

After removing your makeup, now it is time to wash your face -- and here, I am showing how you can use the washing puff together with the washing powder.  This is a very interesting way to use the washing powder.  On my lazy days, I have used the washing powder and lather it with my hands and just wash  my face with  my hands.. I found the puff/ foam method a little of a hassle.  I would like to try using this washing powder with  my Clarisonic soon!  When you purchase the washing powder at Fancl stores, the BA will show you how to use the powder properly, so I am just showing you the rough steps:

for more information on the cleansing puff, click HERE.

for more information on the washing powder, click HERE.

Overall, I highly recommend these products for a gentle and effective way to remove your makeup and washing your face.  While they are not exactly drugstore prices, I would say the price you pay for these FANCL products are worthy for the results you get.  And if you have sensitive skin, you most definitely want to look into these products.

    Prices as follow:

    Facial Washing Powder

    S$26.00 50g x 1 bottle
    S$48.50 50g x 2 bottles
    S$15.00 25g x 1 bottle

    Washing Facial Puff S$10

    Mild Cleansing Oil

    S$33.00 120ml x 1 bottle
    S$62.00 120ml x 2 bottles
    S$19.00 60ml x 1 bottle

That's all, and hope this has been helpful!

    Thanks for reading.

Halloween LOTD: Wide Eyed Dead Doll

    Hi hi,

another Halloween LOTD!  I kinda like this one. And the wide eyed effect is very much emphasized with the white liner, and the harsh flash lighting... not photoshop!  (kinda reminds me of the Bad Romance makeup tutorial which Michelle Phan did sometime back).  My LOTD is loosely based on MissChievious' tutorial but I think I kind of made my look more intense.

    Products used:

Face - Max Factor Lasting Performance liquid foundation, MUFE pan stick foundation white

Contouring - MAC Cooperplate, MAC Top Hat, MAC Carbon eyeshadows

Eyes -26 warm palette, MAC Nocturnelle eyeshadow

Brows bleached out with concealer and the white pan stick

    Lips - MAC Carbon eyeshadow

Veins drawn on with my bro's 0.4 ink pen, some of the fat lines are drawn with MAC superslick liners *fail*  the ink pen worked a lot better.

I did my hair same as hers, but somehow that wasn't the look I am going for. So I let them all loose again.

Yay! So looking forward to Halloween this year!

Product Feature: Shiseido Bio-Performance Super Corrective Serum

    Hi hi,

Yesterday, a few of us had the chance to learn about the age old battleagainst the signs of aging (wrinkles, saggy skin and dull skin tone).  Shiseido has come up with a potent weapon in the form of their newly launched Bio-Performance Super Corrective Serum.  This powerful advanced serum promises to reveal timeless skin in just 1 day of usage.

What is Bio-Performance Super Corrective Serum?

It is a time-fighting serum that delivers revoluntionary solutions to counteract wrinkles, sagging and dullness.  Immediately, skin becomes smooth and radiant, and results are enhanced with daily use.

Together with the product itself, we were also shown some techniques which work to 'exercise' our facial muscles to combat saggy skin due to age (loss of skin elasticity, gravity, you know the drill...).  This facial exercise takes about 5min, and over time, your facial muscles become firmer, giving the appearance of younger looking skin. Angela Boh, Shiseido Training Manager explained to us the causes of aging, and how we can incoporate these techniques into our skincare routine.

After my recent adventures in trying out skincare and facial massage techniques, I must say I am now more convinced than ever, that it is essential that we start as soon as possible, to take great care of our skin.  When I was younger, I have taken my good skin conditions for granted.  But now that I joined the 30s club, skincare is slowly but surely taking pirority. I don't have very high expectations.  I just want good clean skin --- all the time, and in a more frivolous way, it also gives me a little thrill when people think I am younger than I really am.  Yes, I am young at heart, but superficially, I don't want my skin to give the game away, you know?

Here are some pictures of Angela sharing with us the causes of aging and what we can do to improve/ prevent the aging signs.  I also took selective screenshots of the video demo of the facial exercise techniques.  There was a lot more information which we shared with us, and it would be too much to digest in this entry...but the great news is,  you can actually go experience everything I did yesterday.  More information on that later on.

The serum is supposed to work in tandem with your existing skincare routine, and from Shiseido, there is a wide range of products which serves to suit your skin concerns (dryness, pigmentation, dullness, sagging, fine lines, wrinkles etc).

Shirleen also gave her testimonial of how the serum worked on her -- she has been using it for about 3 weeks -- she noticed her skin being smoother, and despite the thick richness of the serum, it absorbed into her skin very quickly, and doesn't feel heavy at all.

After Angela's sharing, the Shiseido BA scanned my face, in order to recommend my matching skincare products after using the serum. It was kind of scary to see my skin magnified 281839102 times!!!  My pores look like some caves, and the invisible hairs on my skin look just eeeewww.  After this very graphic analysis, the BA said my skin is actually dehydrated (well, I guess more like combination -- oily t-zone with normal cheeks) and because I also told her about my concern with spots on my skin (from sun exposure) --- that was also detected by the same scanner, for the melanin spots on our skin.  Mine is only slightly affected, but very obvious, and harmful!

So she recommended to me the White Lucent range (gosh, I have heard so much about this range of products, I know it is only a matter of time I would succumb and get the much raved about serum) which I can use together with the Bio-Performance Super Corrective Serum.

And so I ended up with the following products to try out *egg---cited*

    • Bio-Performance Super Corrective Serum (full sized 30ml)
    • White Lucent Brightening Softening Balancing Softener (sample)
    • White Lucent Bightening Moisturising Emulsion (sample)

I am trying to finish up a couple of products currently, and I think I will start on these first (then my Clarins).. so expect a review in few weeks' time.

    And some close-ups:

    How the serum looks like:

If you would like to take part in the Beauty dialogue, it is still on going at Raffles City.

And if you would like to take part in a 1-hour workshop, here is the information:

And some other pictures I took at the event yesterday:

That's all, and hope this has  been helpful!

    Thanks for reading ~

LOTD: Revisting NARS Sheer Glow Foundation & Rambles

    Hi hi,

Just a regular LOTD, and I used my NARS Sheer Glow after some weeks' of neglect, partly cos my skin has been a little spotty (I  needed a heavier coverage foundie).  But I watched Lisa Elridge's tutorial on how to cover ance marks, and her 'philosophy' totally made sense to me.  For me, I usually have sporadic spots on my face.  But the rest of the skin is relatively clear.  Why cover, or in her words, put a thick blanket of full coverage foundie over the whole face, and end up looking so made up?    This is where foundations like NARS Sheer Glow, MAC Face & Body come in---I like these two foundations for the finish they provided, but I feel insecure as my marks could be seen.  I also used my fuller coveage foundation, the Estee Lauder Double Wear as a concealer to give natural but effective cover up.

I followed Lisa's method in this LOTD, and I think I can finally say, I like NARS Sheer Glow, for all the hype it has garnered. I think now I appreciate the effect that the sheer glow gives, and I have found a great way to conceal my spotty marks.

If you are interested in the Lisa Elridge tutorial I mentioned, click HERE.

    Products used:

Face - Lancome Pro base, NARS Sheer Glow foundation, EL DW foundation *used as concealer with my MAC 217*, Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Powder, Guerlain Meterites Pearle

Eyes - NARS eyeshadow primer, NARS Abyssinia (I HIT PAN!!!), Chanel Mystic Eyes Quad

Cheeks - NARS Laguna, MAC Azalea blush

Liner, Lashes - Loreal Superliner, Shu Uemura #600 (dc I think)

Lips - Chanel's Rouge Allure Extrait Genie (and later on I used NARS Belle du Jour)

Bought this lace and mesh blouse at Topshop yesterday, it costs $39 (usual S$69).

My cousin alerted me to a little shoutout that this blogette got on the New York Times online, in their Beauty New section where they shared weekly blog links.  That retro look I did for my work dinner was firstly featured in Bellasugar, then later on in NYT.  Here is the LINK if you are interested... of course, it links back to the entry here, I know... duh, but it's kind of a little thrill to see my blog name in "print" at the New York Times right along with other links like how to achieve Lea Michelle's wine-colored lipstick, Kate Spade's new scent.   So yay!

And in other updates, this weekend, I will be  busy with Halloween events, so expect lotsa scary LOTDs and outfits!

I also would like to review:

    1. Cosme Decorte Cream foundation
    2. Clarisonic detailed review
    3. Updated skincare and ramble
    4. Shiseido event (that will be up later today)
    5. Nail polish stash showcase

That's all, and thanks for looking!

Jewellery Tag: A Selection of my Faves

Hi hi, I invite everyone to do this tag, show us some of your fave fashion/ jewellery accessories!

FYI, in case anyone is wondering, the blue and black polka dot fabric ribbon I got it at Spotlight.

I am just sharing a bunch of random stuff which I often pull out and wear. Most of them are rings, a couple of necklaces.

    1. Tiffany & Co. sterling silver beads bracelet (abt S$350) , and detachable heart shaped pendant sold separately abt S$240

This is a 'new' discovery, combination which I am currently obsessed with.  I normally wear the heart pendant, bday present from my gf, with my longer necklace, but now I think it looks cuter on the bracelet.  I wear my T&Co. stuff almost everyday, so they are rather 'beaten' looking, which is the way I like them actually.

    2. Tiffany & Co. oversized oval key (abt S$350 and 20" chain abt S$250)

I like how I can wear the chain double round my neck, with the key for a more 'formal' look.  Usually I just wear the necklace long and loose.

    3. Key necklaces in general.

Other than the one shown above, I also have a couple others, which I believe I bought at Forever 21 for less than $10.

    4. Bling Rings

This huge fake one I got at ebay years ago as some kind of a joke.

    Assorted rings.

The one with the dark blue stone is a cheapo one which I think I took from my youngest sis's stash, another bling one with a little dangling ball, which I bought in Hong Kong and on my little finger, is a real diamond one from the ex.

Wicked double Skull Ring from Talisman (Far East Plaza), S$15

This is my latest addition, it is cheap, it is skull, and really quite Mcqueen. So I likey.

Double-sided ring which I bought at a flea market for about S$4

And lastly, another bracelet/ bag charm.

This is a LE Fendi charm bracelet which was from 4 or 5 years back.

That's all, and everyone is tagged to do this tag!  Leave a comment below if you have done so!

    Thanks for looking.  :)

Halloween LOTD: a very typical one

    Hi hi,

I am still playing around with Halloween looks, while the rest of the gang have more or less decided what they want to me, I am clueless.

So here, I just did a very blah--typical kind of gothic/vampy/ vampiry/ bloody look.  It is  not overly gore, not overly gruesome, and just perhaps a little too clean.

I think I need to do more 'research' to find inspiration.

    Products used:

Sticky flaky skin --- DUO Lash Glue

Foundation --- Max Factor foundation, MUFE Pan Stick in white, Laura Mercier Loose Powder

Lips --- MAC Feline to line, Chanel's Dragon (rouge allure lacque)

Blood --- MAC Feline as base, Chanel's Dragon, and MUFE artificial liquid blood

Eyes --- Sleek Graphite palette, MAC Carbon, MAC Plummage,  MAC Smut, MAC Sweet Chestnut

Contour --- MAC Carbon, MAC Poison Pen, MAC Plummage

If you have suggestions for any other looks, let me know in the comments below!

Discovering my Skincare Routine with Clarins Skin Time

    Hi hi!

Yesterday, I had the chance to learn more about my skin concerns, and purchased a bunch of stuff for my skincare routine. I just want to share my experience with you, and hopefully this is helpful to anyone who is in the market for a new skincare routine, regardless of your skin type.

I was invited by Clarins Singapore to attend their special cardmember sale yesterday morning at Tangs Orchard. Being a Clarins member, this is a good time for me and my sister to make purchases to earn points, redeem for exclusive products and also stock up on your regular skincare products.  I also  brought along my sister and girlfriend so we could all do some shopping and also check out the Clarins Skin Time.

Clarins Skintime is a very hands on session whereby you are guided by the Clarins beauty advisor to find out your skin concerns, she will recommend appropriate products as well as a skincare regime that will target your problem areas and also enhance your skin condition.  You will also get apply the products on yourself, so you know how the products work.  I personally find this to be very important, because without seeing the products in action on YOUR own skin, it is pretty hard to tell for sure how it works and feels.

Each of these full face skintime session lasts for about 30 minutes, which includes makeup removal, cleansing, mask, serum treatments, toning, moisturising, eye care, sun protection.  In other words, each Skin Time 30 is a comprehension skin consultation and treatment. If you are short of time, you can try Skin Time 15 -- instead of trying it full face, you get a quick overview and demonstration on your arm.

I honestly much prefer to go for the full face session, because eventually you are supposed to use the products on your face, so it would be a more accurate asessment of your skin condition.

These Skin Time sessions/ consultations are completely free of charge, and you can book  your sessions at their website.

(CLICK HERE to find out more about Skin Time)

Please note, it is completely up to you whether you decide to buy the recommended products after the session.  Even if you don't end up buying anything, you still benefit by trying out the products, and learning about how they work on your skin.  That was one of my greatest takeaway from yesterday's session.

My sister, gf and I all had the chance to try out both Skin Time 15 and Skin Time 30 yesterday. We were all very satisfied with our Skin Time, and despite  being in the outdoor tent along Orchard Road, we were all nicely settled inside. The fragrance of the products which were used, coupled with the friendly BAs, made us feel at ease and oblivious to the curious onlookers outside.

Each session started with a brief session where the Clarins BA asks you a few questions about your skin type, and from there on, she picks products which are targetted for your skin concerns, and you also get to ask questions about how the products work, what type of ingredients they contain and all that.

The good thing about having your sister and gf coming along with you?  They can help with the picture taking while your hands are full or stained with products!   That and it's just so nice and girly to spend the afternoon shopping, having lunch and getting these 'facials' done!

First, I will show you some pictures of Skin Time 15, where we got a glimpse of the skin consulation and products demo on our hands.

And we were all amazed at the difference in skin texture before and after the session!  My treated hand was a lot more supple, and smooth!

I wanted to do a quick trial to make use of the special deals which were only valid from 9--12noon, so that I know which products I wanted to purchase.

And after lunch with Jasmine from Clarins and the other ladies who were also there to experience the event, we went for our respective Skin Time, this time round, I had all my MU removed (I only had on foundation, blush and brows), so that I could properly experience Skin Time. The Clarins BA, Sharon, who attended to me had excellent product  knowledge, she was very friendly and pleasant, and helped me a lot with selecting which product to use at different times.

    Makeup Removal

The various stages of the Skin Time, you can see that the Clarins massage method which I mentioned before in my shaping serum review can be used for applying the other products too.

and the complete skin care regime consists of a whopping 12 steps/ products!  I was shocked at the number too, but it includes cleansing, toning, mask, treatment, day/ night cream, eye creams, and sun protection.  So realistically, you would have 4 or 5 steps on a daily basis, as some of the products are only for weekly use.  Strangely enough, even though I had layers of cream on my face, there was no heavy feeling.  Each product requires only one pump since they are all high-performing products, you don't need to use a lot of it.

Out of these products, I had already purchased 4 of them, and together with my Clarisonic, I think I am building up a very potent skincare regime. There are maybe another 3 more I want to purchase eventually -- the pore minimising serum, defining eye lift and orange extract one step facial cleanser.

I think my skin 'philosophy' these days, I want my skin to be in the best possible condition -- that is the best and only way to look youthful.

No amount of makeup can hide your age, in fact, I think as we grow older, piling on more makeup only makes us look older than we are.  It is perhaps no coincidence that I have been trying out various brands of skincare the past few weeks, as I had accumulated quite a range of product samples lately, and when used in conjunction with my Clarisonic, I noticed a marked improvement in skin quality.  If you are interested, I had been trying out the Lancome Genifique Serum & Eye Cream and Cle de peau skincare range --- superb products --- but they don't warrant full blown review entries because I am only using 5--20ml type sample sizes --- I am glad that I am committing myself to Clarins skincare now.  In my early 20s, I recall using some of their products, but maybe I was young then, and didn't think I notice any improvements to my relatively good skin condition.  Now, I can really tell the difference when quality products are used.

    Ok, I digress!!

My sister also had the chance to try out Skin Time too.

Do you want to see our post Skin Time results???

My sister did not have any makeup on here. She didn't want to 'waste' all the good stuff used on her skin by putting on her foundation.  But she felt like she needed her shades to cover her bare eyes. :)  We were very very amazed by her revitalised and moisturised baby soft skin!

And this is Pei Xian (from MsGlitzy.com) and myself after our post Skin Time glow.  We didn't have on any makep here too.

I did put on a little foundation and filled in my brows before I left the Clarins tent.  I swear, the whole afternoon, I was amazed at how smoothly my foundation went on, and just how much fairer I looked.  The effects lasted til when I got home later in the evening, and the first thing my youngest sis said when she saw me "what foundation you use>>"  and I was like, no foundation! That's my skin!

All in all, I am very happy with my experience yesterday.

You can book for your own Skin Time in the following ways:

    1. Clarins Facebook fan page
    2. Clarins website
    3. Book with any of the Clarins counter

Here are some more pictures taken:

Shirleen was also at the event!

Clarins regulars grabbing great deals during the event!

That's Brenda, from Clarins, she is very friendly and approachable, and quick to attend to us.

Lunch at Island Shop -- that's Kas!

I also bought a bunch of Clarins product yesterday. I spent about $350 (my girlfiend also purchased some products),  Clarins members were each given a $50 voucher which they can use to offset $250 ala carte products or $300 in giftsets.  This offer was only valid during the 9--12noon special hours. I say get there EARLY as the gift sets which are super value for money were all gone quickly.  I was there 11am, and the BAs told me the gift sets were almost all OOS.  With every $350 spent, you can to redeem your Clarins points for a exclusive (not for sale) fragrance, and I was sooooo suckered by the fragrance, I knew I wanted to buy enough to redeem for that.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION ON CLARINS PROMOTIONS which are on-going at TANGS PLAZA.

A quick look at what I bought --- will review them in time to come:

    1. White Plus HP Whitening Moisture Day Emulsion SPF20 (to even out my spots, day moisturiser) S$90
    2. UV Plus HP Day Screen High Protection SPF40 (suncreen for face, tinted) S$74
    3. Gentle Foaming Cleanser with Shea Butter S$40
    4. HydraQuench Cooling Cream-Gel (my night cream after I use the Lifting serum, repurchased!) S$88

These are the GWP goodies I got for spending $350, a full size tube of body scrub, my choice of 5  15ml-samples, face masks (8 mini tubes!!!!).  ThaNot all are pictured here. It seems that I got MORE freebies than my actual purchases!

Haul: MAC Tartan Tale Collection Bags

    hi!

When I was told that the MAC A Tartan Tale collection was out at MAC counters, I dropped by on Friday evening to get the bag which I know I wanted since news of this collection came out on Temptalia.  The tartan, the little stud details on the bag really attracted me.  I have never purchased any of these special brush sets before, because I had never been attracted to the brushes nor the design of the bags.   I can't say that I am all that impressed with these SE brushes, being used to the regular full sized ones which are sturdier and softer.

The sister and I grabbed a couple of the bags at Robinsons MAC.  Each of these bag retail for S$100.

There are a lot more products which will be launched later on as part of this collection, including eyeliners, mineralised items, and so on which I will most likely pass on.  Except for the liners...if there are nice black colored ones, I will def be getting some.

And some more Halloween previews, we spent Saturday evening playing around with makeup and effects, and got some stuff ready for this coming weekend.  I also bleached my brother's hair, which turned out to be a total failure, because the colors were stripped in patches, and he is dismayed, but at our total mercy.  So if he has to leave the house, he wears his cap.  Shall give his hair some respite before we revert to black.  :p

That's all, and thanks for reading!

    LOTD: What a Special Day!

    Hi everyone,

Yesterday was a special day for my younger sis, not only it was her birthday, she also got married!  It was nothing but a totally romantic, fantastic and well, her best birthday ever.  Her husband planned everything all by himself, she literally just need to turn up at the lovely villa to doll up. I am truly happy happy happy for her!  You might have gotten glimpses of the ceremony through my twitter spam last  night, but here are a few choice shots of a truly splendid evening.

My bro and I doing our best to impersonate each other.

I was the unofficial photographer as well as one of the witnesses to the signing of their marriage papers.  I bought her a Tiffany  & Co. heart necklace which I also have, so we all can have matching necklaces. Her wedding ring, needless to say, was a mega bling!  Woots!

Shall end off this happy entry with my simple LOTD.  I used mainly NARS products:

Foundation: Lancome pro base, Lancome Teint Miracle, Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Powder

Eyes: NARS eyeshadow primer, NARS Abyssinnia, NARS Indian Song duo

Lips: NARS Belle Du Jour lipstick

Cheeks: NARS Laguna, NARS Douceur blush

That's all, and thanks for reading!

Looking forward to playing with more Halloween looks this weekend!

Review: Lancôme La Base Pro Perfecting Makeup Primer PLUS Updated Face Routine

Ok, this is going to be a long rambling entry! and I haven't done something like this in ages.

I will be covering these 2 main  points:

    1. Review of Lancôme Perfecting Makeup Primer
    2. Updated FACE Routine  which includes some face products which I have been loving lately

This will be a review of the Lancôme Perfecting Makeup Primer.   I bought this at S$68 (25ml), available at all Lancôme counters.

The formula of this product is oil-free, and completely colourless, which suits all skintones and especially if you have oily/ combination skin. What made me buy this product is because I had swatched it at the counter and I like the results at the back of my hand.  Why do I say that:?  This is because the primer comes out like a silicon type consistency, which I usually avoid because these break me out.  However, when I rubbed some liquid foundation over the swatch at the back of my hand, I was really impressed by how nicely and smoothly the foundation went over the primed area of my hand. There were no streaking, no slipping around of the foundation.  Both products settled into a very flawless finish.  And since I was in the market for a primer, I bought it that day.  I have been using it for around 3 weeks or so, almost everyday, everytime I put on makeup.

Some product information, if you are interested:

Give your complexion a beautiful air-brushed look with Lancôme's amazing, oil-free makeup base. Inspired by makeup artists, the La Base Pro Perfecting Makeup Primer creates a smooth, radiant and long-lasting canvas for a more perfected makeup look. Great for all skin types, the mattifying formula feels comfortable on your skin and helps control shine.

Lancôme La Base Pro Perfecting Makeup Primer Features:

    • Exclusive Lancôme Elasto-Smooth™ technology forms a silk-like network on skin to create a soft-focus effect, like a filter on a camera lens.
    • Temporarily refines skin's texture and diffuses light to visibly reduce the look of imperfections.
    • Contains silicons and emollients that create an even canvas for foundation.
    • Makeup glides on seamlessly.
    • Color stays true and vibrant for a radiant, air-brushed look all day.
    • Skin looks and feels satin-soft; never greasy.

    Information taken from here.

How do I use this product?

We always start with clean skin!  In this close up shot, you can see little freckle spots, dark undereyes (I slept less than 10 hours in the last 2 days), redness around the nose, and BIG PORES! The latter I am counting on my Clarisonic to clear out and improve the appearance.  So you see, we need help in making my problematic skin look flawless, even though it really is not.

I usually use 2.5 pumps of product, and I use it mainly around T-zone, cheeks and a lot lesser towards the outer part of the face which is relatively smoother and no enlarged pores, no oiliness there.

I don't know if you can tell in the following picture, but you can see that as the product goes over the skin,  you can see it soothes over the pores (but you can still see the 'dots' because the product is transparent).  You can feel a fine layer of film-like texture over your skin.  I usually wait a few minutes before applying my liquid foundation after this step.

Here you can get a better look, after I have applied and blended the primer.

Here, I am using the LancômeTeint Miracle foundation in the shade B-02.  It looks very yellow in the picture, but it works out fine because the yellow beige tone serves to neutralise the pink/ redness of my skin.  Foundation review here.

The most striking thing is the EASE of application and blending of the foundation. Amazing!  And I think I tend to use lesser product too.  Usually I wait somemore (do my eyemakeup, brows etc) before I set my face with loose powder.  This waiting time is crucial, because you want the products to settle in nicely in your skin.  Here, I used Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder.

    Overall thoughts on the primer:

    • Helps foundation goes on easily and smoothly.
    • Gives a refined flawless finish.
    • Did not break me out.
    • Oil control effect is not apparent.  I still need to blot (either with tissue paper or blotting sheets) after 4--5 hours.
    • Helps foundation wear longer and FRESHER throughout the day (despite the blotting).
    • Fragrance-free for sensitive noses.  Hehehe..

    I highly recommend this primer!

Updated FACE ROUTINE: By this, I mean what else I throw on the face, if I am just going to work for the day.  What I wear on my cheeks, my brows, etc etc

I have been loving one blush lately, wore it almost everyday the past week, and that's saying a lot... because at last count... I have enough blushes in my stash to last me two whole months without repeating a single one. *shamefaced*

So after my foundation routine as shown above, I move on to my cheeks.  I am liking the Cosme Decorte Modeling Nuance 001 to highlight my cheeks, to impart a natural looking glow/ highlight.  It is a matte white cream, very dry cream which I can use even though I have already powdered my face.  Reminds me kind of like the texture of my NARS cream blush.

It looks scary white here, but OK after blending out!

After you apply blush, it will look even more natural.  I used my Illamasqua Tremble (powder blush), and the color looks super washed out in the picture below.  It is a brighter (but still pale) warm tone matte pink shade.

I use my MAC 116 brush to apply blush most of the time.

I dabbed on some lipstick (Maquillage RS518) and we are good to go!

*ignore how tired my eyes look*

And we are done, and this is with minimal/ no concealer at all. Nothing under my eyes, and nothing on my lids.

I like to show how the foundation looks like after one hour, when it has properly set.

I just colored my hair deep blue black on Sunday.  Hello to glossy hair!  :)

Speaking of Lancôme, I recently got copies of the pictures they took during the press event, and also you can find a video clip of several other users/ bloggers and myself talking about the Teint Miracle at the Lancôme 75th Anniversary website (click here) and their FB page.

I have to say, the post-production crew definitely did a good job of making me not look so blah, cos I was barefaced that day except for the foundation on my skin.

That's all, and hope you enjoyed this rambly epic entry.  If you have any questions about any product mentioned here, do leave your comments below!

    Thanks for reading!
