About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

US Haul Part Four - Save the Best for Last (MAC)

This is the final part of my little haul series.  I am so glad all these were already bought before I got on Project 10 Pan.

I got quite a few stuff.  I bought 3 dazzleglasses, which is not released in Singapore yet.   The colours are Funtabulous, Extra Amps and Stop! Look!  Which all turn out to be purple, fuschia type of colors.  Hmmm cos I only wanted ONE... but the BF got a little mixed up and since some of the items which I wanted were not in stock, he bought all 3 which I said he could buy.  I am amazed at how BRIGHT and Shiny the colors are.  I have never own a Dazzleglass before, and I must say, I am really dazzled.

From top Funtabulous, Extra Amps, Stop! Look!

MAC Studio Sculpt Foundation in NC15.  I am not going to open the seal yet.  I need to finish some of my liquid foundations before using this.

Eyeshadows in pro pan refills.  From L to R, Rose, Cobalt, and Sky Blue -- All pro colours.

Dirty Plum Blusher.  This is also a Pro colour.  A very dark purple color.  Interesting blush color.  I am excited to try this out.

The MAC 222 brush, which for some strange reason, I can't find in SG mac counters.

That's all, and thanks for reading!

US Haul Part Three (Sally's Goodies)

This is all I got from Sally's Beauty Supplies.  China Glaze nail polish and the Batiste Dry Shampoo.   I sprayed a little of the shampoo into my hair, and it really makes the hair fluffier and cleaner.  Even my brother is quite impressed by it.

And of course, I got to get some China Glaze.  While I am sure what I want to get, I don't know what exactly is in store.  So it's kind of hit and miss.  But what I got, I love!   Esp Ruby Pumps.  It is like MAC Dazzleglass in the form of a nail polish.

Ruby Pumps.  The picture doesn't do the glitter justice.  It is waaay more glittery and pretty in real life.

This is fifth avenue, a pretty dusty pink color.

Evening Seduction, which is one of those noir shades like OPI Lincoln Park after Dark.

US Haul Part Two (Sephora Goodies)

    Hi again!

This is all the stuff I got from Sephora. They range from hair stuff, to mainly the OPI for Sephora nail collection.  And I also got my back up Two Faced Shadow Insurance.  Because I bought so much stuff, I also got the Beauty Insider Card which the BF can use for my next haul when he goes again next month.

Johnathan Bottom? Dirt Texturising Paste --- rub a bit into your hair for some volume and messed up look.  And it smells HEAVENLY!!

NARS blusher in SIN.  Very interesting.  I never own a color like this.  A tan shimmery colour.  Loves it!

The very infamous and sought after Metro Chic.  I got 2 bottles of this.  But actually..... I think it looks very much like OPI's You Don't Know Jacques from the Fall French Collection, which I already own.   Oh well.

I need Space, which is a sheer nude colour.

Call your Mother, which looks a little like Parlez Vou OPI?  which I already own.  I realise I always buy similar shades.  I am such a sucker.

On Stage.  A dirty mauve greyish colour.  Love love!!

Run with It.  I don't know how to describe it.. but it is a really pretty colour IMO.  I like these colors that you can't quite tell what exactly they are.

He got the TFSI with comes with this eyeshadow palette.  The colors are really pigmented, but I didn't show the swatches.

And that's all for now.  Watch out for Part Three, which features Sally's goodies!

US Haul Part One (Urban Outfitters & VS Pink)

    HI!

My boyfriend who went to SF last week bought me a ton of stuff from Urban Outfitters, Victoria Secret and Old Navy.  I also gave him a long shopping list of stuff to get from MAC, Sallys and Sephora.

I have decided to put this haul into a few parts.  Part One is a quick post on the clothes, and underwear stuff.

I love Truly Madly Deeply tees from Urban Outfitters.  And the bag is sooo cute!

And my fave and another obsessive compulsive (which I don't usually rant about in this blog) Victoria Secrets!  The Bf got me 4 bras (I usually wear the lightly lined t-shirt bras) and he also got 8 or 10 boy shorts, and 2 big PINK shopping bags.  Woot!!!!

Next few posts will be details of MAC stuff, Sephora and Sallys nail hauls.

    Tiffany nails by Barry M

Haha... sort of.  For the past couple of weeks, my nails have been really short and torn and tattered.  I don't know how you describe it....  they are just really tacky.  I guess when I removed the gel extensions, all that buffing and scrubbing really stripped my nails. But still, I don't care.  Because nails GROW back.

So I tried on one of the Barry M nail paints which I got my mom to buy when she went to London.

This is No 295 which is Turquoise.  Very very close to the Tiffany blue.

So I am kind of lazy, and I took these pictures using my macbook camera, hence the poorer quality and mirror image effect.

I might post more stuff today. But got to clear some work and eat first.  Obviously... I am soooooo distracted now.  Haha.

From the dressing room: retro dresses & Zara top

    HI!

We (my sister and I) sort of stumbled across this little store yesterday selling old stuff... (for those living in SG, it's at Beach Road market, unit #02-167).

Lotsa old bags, and a rack of clothes, which we just browsed through without really expecting to find anything nice.  I was also thinking they might be overpriced, cos I really don't think I want to splurge on old clothes.  But these we got are really cheap.  Like literally old clothes price tags. Not  marked up so-called vintage prices. The retro clothes/ old stuff I saw when I was in Camden market (London). Compare S$150+++ to these I spent around S$25 per dress, and S$20 for each of the shades.

Between the 2 of us, we got 3 dresses, 1 vest, 1 belt, and I got the 2 shades for myself.  And these are things which I really would wear and not save for a theme party.

So we got home, tried them out (we did try over our clothes at the shop) and got mom to take these pictures for us.

And TIP #1:  WASH, disinfect your retro clothes before wearing them out.  In these pictures, we were wearing singlets underneath, or else I think I would break out in rashes.   My sister had to rinse and wash every single piece of item like 5 times, before the water runs CLEAR. Gross!!!

Dress in my fave colour, lavender/lilac.  And unisex kinda sleek shades.

This is kind of too small for me, fits way better on my sister.  A printed stripey nude dress, with little prints of horses all over.  Really cute!

    The floral vest and belt.

Another pair of shades, with the gradient shading.

Sister's fave buy, a purple floral dress with little ruffles detailing.

The workmanship on these clothes are amazing.  The seams, and details are very unique, hmmm there are hardly any seams at the back shoulder area, if you know what I mean....My mom says clothes like these aren't made anymore.  She is a tailor, so she should know.

And my little Zara try out.  I didn't buy it, just tried for fun.

I thought the details are cute, but ultimately I didn't need another white tunic kind of thing.

First impressions: The GHD Flat Iron

    HI hi!!

    I am sooooo excited!!!!!

I ordered this online at beautychoice.com a couple of weeks ago.  With the promo code, I got a free hairdryer (of course, shipping is not free, and I paid a bomb for it, and perhaps somewhere in Singapore someone might be selling..but whatever).

And holy cow, check out the HUGE box.

Shipping is fast, and you can track the status online.

The Hairdryer looks really professional.  Bigger than the one I am using now.

I have never seen such a sleek box for a hair product.  LOL.

    Upclose of the GHD iron.

OK I just want to say these are my very very first reactions and impressions.  I already have straight hair.  And I straightened my hair last August, to make the ends neater and 'chunkier' if you know what I mean.  Why do I need this flat iron??  Because I have seen it being used to create loose waves, and I have been wanting to have some wavy hair when I feel like it.  And you can just do the wavy thingy instantly.  I have a couple of curling tools, such as the 1" curling tong, 3/4" curling tong, and those heated curlers... but you need to work your hair for at least 1 hour before styling it.  And I like to 'iron' my hair really sleek if I feel like it too.  And I have heard and seen reviews of this flat iron in action, so I thought if I am going to buy, I might as well get the best?!

My current flat iron (actually it's my sister's) is a drugstore one which works fine... since we both already have straight hair --  I think I will keep the drugstore one for travel.. and if I need to use it on my students in productions etc.

I plugged in the GHD, and turned on the button, and it heats up reallly quickly.  There is a slight plasticky smell, but I think it's because the thing is so brand new.  It is also very light to hold, and the wire is quite long, so you have plenty of space to work with, as in you can just walk around your dressing up area or watever if need to.  Haha. Duh! Why would anyone do that right?

So anyway.... I just tried to 'iron' one side of my hair, and then attempt to curl the other side.  The iron really slips through the length of my hair very smoothly, no snagging. And it is REALLY HOT.  I don't need to go over the same section again, unlike my old iron, where I had to go over the same section 3 or 4 times to get the desired texture, and it can be more harmful for the hair.  As for the wavy side, I am happy with the results.  Very fast, and loose wavy curls, I can just twist and turn the iron around each section, and then my hair just falls into the wavy pattern.

When I have more time over the weekend I will do a more detailed post on this amazing hair tool.

This is my hair after a day at work.  I prolly tied, and untied it 5 or 6 times throughout the day.  I also did not comb my hair, cos it is usually too wet in the morning for me to comb.  I am really messy when it comes to hair.

Much smoother and shinier as compared to the first pic.  I didn't put any heat protecting thingy, so is bad, but just for demo and testing purpose, whatever.

*UPDATE - Youngest Sister makes a cameo in this post. She has the best hair among the 3 of us, her hair is naturally thick and straight, and so healthy.  I tried the GHD on her hair.  The iron takes literally less than 1 minute to be fully heated (there will be a beeping tone).  And it is really HOT, I don't suggest you touch the parts of your hair after the iron goes through it. But the handle, and the plastic around the iron plates are not hot, which makes it safe for handling. And sit near a fan or some cooling thing, so the heat can be diffused or dispersed, cos or else you will end up SWEATING like mad.  I had my AC on in the room, so it wasn't so warm.  Ha ha.

She is camera shy, so she is not showing her face.

Even she is impressed with how smooth, shiny and bouncy her hair looks after the ironing.  And she is amused by the waves, but check out how luscious her waves look -- without any hair styling products.

OK..... that's all I have to say for now.... I think I will go drool at the GHD for a while more... and rock some waves the next time I go out!

    Thanks for reading!

I am always changing, but comfort is the key. Some days I go really casual, and go out in a ratty tee and jeans with full face make up, and sometimes, I do the whole over-dressed thingy even when I am just going to the nearby mall.  It depends on what catches my attention when I open my closet.  But I tend to lean towards some kind of preppy, and also, dare I saw this? punky style.  As in, I can just wear black nails with a perfectly nerdy shirt.  Whatever. You know what I mean.

    Personal Style quirk?

Messy hair that is never in the same place for more than 5 minutes.

    Most underrated item in menswear/womenswear?

    No time for A.M. make-up?

30 minutes.  That's how long I can spend doing my MU in the morning.  Ok, granted, I am also eating my breakfast, checking morning emails etc while doing it.

When in a hurry and yet you need some colours to brighten up your eyes (esp when I prolly got less hours of sleep than I should), you need to work out which is the most time-saving way to put on the eyeshadows.

I would say 50% of the time I skipped the whole eyeshadow routine, simply because I tend to get carried away and before I know it, I am spending 15 mins of previous morning time to get ready.  And that's just on eyeshadows.  I think, when it comes right down to my morning MU routine, I would surely fail the 5-minute, or even 10 minute challenge.

What I can't skip however, are my foundation, blusher and eyeliner.  I can even skip the concealer bit.

Recently I have been into the 2 or 3 eyeshadows habit.

For example, this morning, I just primed my lids with two-faced shadow insurance. I applied Vex e/s all over my lids (with 217 brush), Mylar e/s to highlight (with 227 brush), and a little sweep of Apri Grey e/s for the crease (with 224 brush), and finally some liquid eyeliner. Not complicated at all. Took me at the most 5 minutes.

I am interested to know about your time saving ideas when it comes to morning make up.
