About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

No ads, no paid links etc please.  I am in charge of all content and pictures here.

NEW: Lancôme MAQUI MIRACLE (Plus New Lip Products & Eyeshadow Palettes)

This March, Lancôme will be launching a brand new compact powder foundation, which uses the same AURA-BRIGHT technology to recreate an aura of lively brightness and inner radiance that comes from within.  If you are unfamiliar with AURA-BRIGHT™, do CLICK HERE for my write up & information of the Teint Miracle, which is the first foundation that uses the same technology.  Maqui Miracle is formulated on the same basis, except it has a higher SPF, and in a convenient compact powder form.

Incidentally, my Teint Miracle review and application entry is the most read entry of all time, if you are interested, or have not checked it out before, CLICK HERE to view.

A few of us had the opportunity to preview this latest offering yesterday along with a series of point makeup which I will also be showing in this entry.  I will be posting the LOTD and more information in a later entry this week.  Lotsa swatches and colours to drool over here!

The compact foundation comes in a sleek white casing with the trademark Lancôme rose emblem on the cover.  It is also re-fillable.

    MIRACLE AURA

    • Recreate your inner light radiance
    • Natural, shine-free and brightening translucent finish

    MIRACLE Protection

    • Highest UV Protection with SPF35/PA+++ in a compact
    • Mineral-rich formular, suitable for sensitive skin
    • 12hr long-wearing

    MIRACLE Touch

    • Ultra fine powders adhere to skin for a poreless-smooth finish
    • Light, airy sensation all day long

There is a range of 8 Asian specific shades available, and while swatching all of them yesterday, I was most impressed by how silky smooth and light the powder feels.  Can't wait to try this out as a foundation on its own, and also to set my liquid foundation.

The compact also comes with an exclusive luxurious duo sponge to create the ideal coverage.

We were also shown a selection of new colors for the eyes and lips, which will also be available from MARCH.  Here they are!

    L'ABSOLU ROUGE

Wrap your lips in rich, satiny color with this deeply replenishing lipstick. Infused with moisture-boosting Pro-Xylane™, lips stay moist, soft and comfortable for up to 8 hours. Antioxidant-rich Vitamin E and SPF 12 help keep lips safe from environmental aggressors, so they’ll look and feel healthier day after day. The stay true color won’t feather, flake or fade, so your pout will always look picture-perfect.

I picked my color in the reddish coral shade #180.

#180 (not sure of the name)

Is gorgeous!  I will do lip swatches in my LOTD entry.

And next, are the L'ABSOLU CRÈME DE BRILLANCE. Again, lip swatches will be up in my LOTD entry.  I picked a matching shade to the lipstick.

With one sweep this gloss delivers creamy color, intense hydration and elegant shine. Its innovative formula features the most powerful anti-aging ingredient from Lancôme research (Pro-Xylane™ Concentrated) in its most potent form, to help boost hydration from within the skin. Lips are instantly moisturized and remain comfortable for up to 10 hours.

Lancôme will be lauching 4 new eyeshadow palettes, named the Ombre Absolue Impact 3D, which consists of a new palette to create beautiful sparkling eyes.  Each of the shades in the palette work together to achieve different looks from natural day wear to sexy high glamour.

Infinitely luminous.  Sensationally smooth.  All-in-one 5 shadow palette to brighten eyes.

Lancôme’s new versatile, all-in-one palette conveniently creates a full eye look for day or night.

And I picked this following color, which I will be using in my LOTD!!

It is touted as a high glamour and sexy look! :)

    Swatches!

Can't wait to try out all my goodies!  Stay tuned for more information and these products in action.

Hope this has been helpful, and thanks for looking.

p/s Lancome products were given to me for consideration.   All opinions are my own honest ones. (duh)

Two Looks: Meeting for the First Time

    Hi hi

Just a quick entry on two looks which I thought I would personally wear if I am meeting someone (either for work, social, outing etc etc) for the first time.  I would like to look 'natural' yet a better more enhanced version of myself.  I don't want my makeup to attract the attention, but just want to play up certain features.  Was just tweeting with Amanda today (onsugar nick fiend - but where has she been on onsugar?) about meeting people, and our love for makeup, etc etc, how to strike that balance.... you know?  The most important to me would be a flawless yet natural complexion.  Then comes the brows -- though I know my brows now are as full and hairy as they get.  URGH.

For eye makeup, I am either ALL or nothing.  Because if I go all out and put on eyeshadow, I have to put on liner, lashes and so on, otherwise everything will just smudge.  I don't bother with mascara cos they just take too much time (and little results, because of my tiny lashes).  And I can't just have eyeshadows without the full works.  So yup, it's all or nothing.  And I think I have mastered the false lashes enough to know what suits me, and what would be quite natural. Remember to bring out the lash glue in case of any mishaps.

But for base makeup, I cannot compromise.  I feel most conscious about my spots, and besides, having a clean radiant complexion instantly draws light and youthful glow to yourself.   I would also go for something that I know will last and look through for the whole outing, because the last thing I want to worry about is my foundation fading.  I would only just blot my oily t-zone time to time, but not powder my face.

As for lips, I would prefer to go with something natural, if you are going for dinner, or going to be talking a lot, you won't want to be conscious whether a bright color you are wearing is fading, or smearing all over your lips, or whether you need to pop by the ladies to touch up or re-apply.  Even if you need to re-apply, you can just apply natural looking lipsticks on its own very quickly and discreetly (even without using a mirror).

With all these in mind, I have come up with two natural/ enhanced looks.

    Look ONE:

A slight smokey cool toned brown eyes that isn't too dramatic, yet makes eyes look bigger, and more captivating (I hope so!!).  I keep one color all over the lids and under the eyes, so any mistakes are less obvious, and also more natural looking.

Cheeks are kept very neutral, because of the colored eyes and lips.

    Products used:

Base: Cosme Decorte control essence, Chanel Mat Lumiere (mixed with Max Factor long lasting foundie), Laura Mercier loose powder, Amazing Cosmetics concealer, Clarins Instant Light Perfector brush for undereyes

Eyes: UPDD, UD Roach, Masquerade Palette (the matte brown shade for blending, and white bone shade for brow highlight), Loreal Superliner, Ardel #120 lashes, Maybelline Lash Stylist on lower lashes

    Lips: Cosme Decorte PK858 lipstick

For touching up or more glow, I also used Guerlain Pressed Meteorites powder.

    Look Two

This would be a very safe and classic look, in my opinion.  Pop of color on the cheeks, and very little on the eyes.  I just lightly contoured the eyes and cheeks with the same matte bronzer, and a very very fine black line to define the eyes.   Lips are also kept nude and natural to bring out the complexion.  For this you really want to use a very nice radiant finish foundation -- my choice here being the Lancome Teint Miracle.

In both sets of pictures, I think you can really see the differences in the overall finish of the foundation.  The Teint Miracle is indeed a lot more 'smoother', and really imparts that glowy aura!  Well, it could be also that the shade is really a lot more suited for my skintone than the combination/ mixture of shades of the two foundations.

    Products used:

Base: RMK Creamy Base, Lancome Teint Miracle, Dermablend Translucent loose powder, Amazing Cosmetics Concealer, Lancome Teint Miracle light perfecting pen/ brush for undereyes

    Cheeks: NARS Albatross, NARS Mounia

Contouring shade: MUFE Matte Bronzer #02

    Lips: Revlon Nude Attitude

And to give your eyes more definition without adding colors, throw on the lashes, or coats of voluminising mascara, and you will look very fresh, clean and almost doll-like.

I used the Ardel #120 as before.

So which is your fave look?  And if you have any tips for getting ready, do share them in the comments below!

That's all and thanks for looking.

LOTD: MAC Copperplate Eyeshadow (Plus new necklace and hairdo)

    Hi hi,

no, I did not cut my hair..that's just my fringe really long and out of shape.

It feels like I have not done a LOTD in a while, partly because of the breakout action going on my forehead (hormonal), but it's all clearing, and I have some time to snap a few pics before heading out.

I feel like doing a very smudgy dirty looking smokey eye, and decided to use just one color all over my lids.  The main color in this LOTD is MAC's Copperplate, a very cool tone grey brown, it is a matte2 texture.  If it looks shimmery in the picture, it could be due to the fact that I did not pick up and blend the color with a brand new clean brush, so the shimmer or shiny bits came from the dirty brush I used.

I am also loving the combination of Lancome Pro Base primer, Lancome Teint Miracle foundation, and set with the Laura Mercier translucent setting powder.  That's just a necklace I bought yesterday at Tangs.  It looks super harcore heavy metal, but isn't that scary once worn.

As for the hair, sister and I have been rather obsessed with braiding our hair in this way, called the fishtail braid.  She did the braiding, because I tried a few times and totally couldn't manage.

    All products used:

Foundation -- Lancome Pro Base, Lancome Teint Miracle, Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder

    Cheeks - NARS Gilda

    Lips - NARS Honolulu Babe

Eyes - NARS shadow primer, MAC Vanilla on brow brone, MAC Copperplate on the crease.

Liners - MAC Smolder, UD 24/7 Zero, MAC Superslick in Signature Blue, lashes from sasa, lower lashes, Maybelle macara

That's all, and thanks for looking~  Yay to the weekend being here!

LOTD: Wearable Winged Liner (Plus What We Ate At Oktober Fest)

    Hi hi,

Just a super quick easy wearable look!  I went with clean skin, pop of color on the cheeks, and winged liner---- I think I must learn to master the winged liner, and be able to do it in a snap.

I didn't have a chance to take the usual LOTD type pictures, so these are shots of when I was already out and about.  Mainly I went to Sentosa (wavehouse) with the sibs for this year's Oktober fest, not too sure I would be going to the actual one at Swiss Club yet..... but the thought of eating all those meat again is... hmmm.... kind of 'gelak' (OD)  to me right now.   But oktober fest at the Swiss Club is like the real thing, the most authentic atmosphere of this beer and feast fest!

Anyhow....how many times have I gone out wearing this exact outfit? LOL.  Super comfy, and gives me lotsa room to move about and eat lots of food, so I ain't complaining.

Here is a pic of me trying to do the Chantana peace sign, but failed miserably, cos my sis who took this pic completely cut out the rest of my fingers!  Boo!

    Products used:

Foundation - Lancome Teint Miracle, set with La Mer powder

Cheeks - Nars Gilda, Mac Conjure Up, Givenchy Prismissime Mat & Glow 71

Lips - Maquillage Glossy Rouge PK715

Eyes - Nars eyeshadow primer, MAC Vanilla e/s, MAC Wedge e/s, Loreal Superliner, Girls Aloud Nicola false lashes

    And more pictures below!!

Yup, that's all!  Thanks for looking!  :)

LOTD: MAC Bloodline Pigment & Signature Blue Superslick Liquid Liner

    Hi hi,

Decided to do this quick and easy smokey eyes featuring 2  MAC items which I purchased this week.  They are still currently in store, and I highly recommend getting them.  :)

MAC Bloodline pigment is a very interesting mix of purple and brown, almost blackened with subtle frost.  Personally, I thought it is the perfect shade for you to create everday looks to very dramatic sultry smokey eyelooks.  In this LOTD, I kind of did a 'cut crease' method, and only used the pigment as the color on in the crease.  This creates a smokey dark eye look without being over the top.

I also did not want to go with a nude lipstick, that would be a little boring and predictable, so instead I used a lipstick that is very similar to my own lip color.

    Products used:

FACE: Chifure Makeup Base Milk, Lancome Teint Miracle foundation, MUFE Super Matte loose powder, Guerlain Meteorites Perles

    CHEEKS: NARS Laguna, NARS Lustre

    LIPS: MAC Hug Me (lustre)

EYES: NARS Pro Primer eyeshadow base, MAC Brule e/s all over lids, MAC Solarwhite e/s on lids, MAC Bloodline pigment on the crease and lower lashline (applied with Sigma SS109, blended with MAC 217)

LINERS. LASHES: MAC superslick liner Signature Blue, MAC Feline (waterline), Ardel 120 lashes, Lancome Precious cells on lower lashes only

I really think the Lancome Teint Miracle photographs very well, and it lasts me a good 10 hours with minimal fading... though I still need to blot my face every few hours.  Really enjoying it so far.  :)

Vintage wash tee from Cotton On, in case you are wondering, and I flat-iron my  semi-wet hair with GHD today.

That's all, and thanks for looking!

Half Face Experiment: Applying The Lancôme Teint Miracle Foundation

    Hi hi!

Decided to try out the Lancôme Teint Miracle Foundation today.  I will be doing a half face application, so you can see the difference, and also, for me to check and scrutinise the texture of  the foundation.  Then I am also showing a couple of other Lancôme products.  I won't be doing much colors in this entry, and will just let the aura do the magic.  Because if your face/ foundation looks flawless, really, you don't need much else.  :)

If you would like more information about this foundation, please click HERE to see my earlier entry on its properties.

The shade I am using here is BO-02. I am using my fingers simply because it is the fastest way to apply a liquid foundation without streaking (and partly my other foundation brushes haven't been washed, and I don't want to mix any products which may interfere).

The foundation blends very easily, something which I have already noticed when I first swatched the product.  Although I could see the slightest bits of shine (liquid reflectors) in the bottle, it is not something which is glaringly obvious once applied on your skin.  The texture is light, and I don't feel like I have applied anything on my skin.  If you are worried about liquid foundations being thick, I think that with new technology, liquid foundations in general have improved tremendously, and most of them shouldn't make you feel like you are wearing a mask.  And you can simply set your foundation with a light dusting of powder, and you are good to go.

    Can you tell the difference?

Obviously, the side of my face which is bare looks reddish, spotty and just quite raw.  I have not used any concealer yet at this point, so you can tell the foundation gives good even coverage.  I would say this is a medium coverage foundation. On a scale of one to ten, I would say this is something like 5 or 6. To draw some comparisons,  the feeling of this foundation is akin to NARS Sheer Glow, and also the Maquillage Long Lasting Stick.   My pores are still slightly visible, but after I set my face with powder, almost everything is all smoothed out (except for a couple of spots).

Next, I tried out the Multi-Lights Touch Corrector Bare Skin Perfection for under my eyes.  It looks very much pink toned, which is suitable for brightening my undereye areas - do note that my dark undereyes aren't very serious, and I am able to use this as a concealer.  If you have darker undereyes, you might want to use a real concealer first, and then followed by this product to highlight and brighten the undereye area.   I also used it to even out the little bits of reddness around my nose.

I shall fast forward a little, and applied the foundation on the other side of my face, and set with my La Mer loose powder with a large powder brush (SS150).   I used a brush cos it gives a lighter application rather than the powder puff -- again --- because I don't want to interfere with the original texture and appearance of the Teint Miracle.  You can also see that the foundation blends well into my jawline, so it is a perfect match.

And somemore fast forward, I applied a little contour on my cheeks and eyes (using NARS Laguna & MAC Sculpt and Shape powder, MAC Personal Style blush--- all cool toned contour colors) and slapped on some eyeliner.   Then I applied a lipgloss, also by Lancôme, which is the Crĕme De Brillance in shade 06 (Rose Nu).

I am sure you are familiar with the doe-foot applicator from Lancôme which makes it easy to fit to the shape of your lips.  This gloss doesn't have any scent, and is not sticky at all.

And here is the completed look -- I am wearing false lashes from Palz, pictures taken with and without flash.

I am feeling rather good about this foundation so far!   I intentionally left out any highlighting products for this LOTD (eg, NARS Nico, or any of  my MAC MSF) because I want to see if the aura and inner radiance will come through my skin, and not from other products.  Do you think there is any difference?

Shall report back on its longevity in time to come.

Hope this has been helpful, and thanks for looking.
