About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

No ads, no paid links etc please.  I am in charge of all content and pictures here.

Meet my New CELINE Audrey Shades

One of my bigger purchase in Hong Kong is this pair of Celine shades.

To be honest, it is purely accidental!

I was browsing at Harvey Nichols last week, and I was trying on this pair of Tom Ford shades.. and contemplating it.. then I walked around the eyewear section, and saw their selection of Celine shades.  I had tried them on before at the Celine store in Singapore.. but all the designs felt stiff, heavy and didn't fit my face.  That's before this release of NEW eyewear for 2013.  So basically, this pair of New Audrey is a updated version of the existing Audrey (an image search of 'Celine Audrey' will throw up lots of images of fashion bloggers and celebs wearing it, fyi) the important thing about the NEW Audrey is that it is wider, and it fits my face, and is in a classy style that I would be able to wear for a long time to come.

I probably modeled it for quite some time at Harvey Nichols, and the sales associate was extremely helpful (his name is Arthur) he was not pushy, but politely informative.  I didn't eventually buy it at HN, because they had a brown pair, and a olive green pair.. but I didn't want to make a purchase on the spot.  I wanted to sleep on it, and besides it was the first day I reached HK, and I had the whole week to contemplate further.

Then a couple of days later, I was at the Celine store at Landmark (lousy staff by the way) again, they had only the brown pair and I also tried on this other pair which is edgier.. two toned lenses.  But I posted pics of me wearing both pairs on my Instagram, and an overwhelming over 40 people 'voted' for the New Audrey... heheh so when I was at the Celine store in Harbor City, and I saw the NEW Audrey in BLACK... that totally won me over.

I usually prefer black shades... they just go better with my coloring, my black hair, fair skin... a brown pair would be a little out of place I think.

So, I took the plunge and bought the NEW Audrey --- I think this is prolly my 5th sunglasses purchase this year (black Ray Ban aviators, two pairs of HOH, and Elizabeth & James Fairfax....gulps) I am really a sunglasses addict!

Here's the link to the shades at Harveys Nichols online store (sold out currently, and at 200 pounds!!  OMG)

    Model number is CL41805/S/New Audrey

I paid HKD2030 which is about SGD330.  All the Celine shades I tried on in Singapore including the 'old' Audrey retails for over $400.... so I thought the price in HK seems to be really attractive.

p/s I also love the suede slim case for the shades.  I am so sick of all the bulky boxes that come with my Dior and HOH shades. This Celine case actually fits into my bags so nicely!

    More close up pictures:

I seldom pick shades with such thick arms... but this is really nice and classy!
It has graduated maroon lenses, and also polarised, if I am not wrong.

and here's how it looks like on me:  With and without makeup!

I love that it covers my eyes sufficiently... covers this random zit on my nose.. hehehe.  Very useful!

my slightly blotchy just woke up face..

all dolled up and ready to go!

Obviously, the Audrey shades is named after Audrey Hepburn.... see this image here from Breakfast at Tiffanys - I definitely don't have her pixie shaped face, but I think it suits me too!

    image link

and if you want a comparison of old vs new Audrey shades, click on this link here.
New Audrey is squarer and bigger.

Hope this rambly post about my fave accessory (after armcandy) is useful... and thanks for reading!

Shopbop Haul: Elizabeth & James [The Fairfax Shades]

    Hi!

I love to order eyewear and bags from Shopbop.  They really have the best accessories, and I have never been disappointed with any of my shopbop haul.  And I love shades, even though I might not wear them on a daily basis.  I am really into black shades, more so than the brown ones.  I was toying with the idea of the Prada baroque ones... but... I think in the end, the Fairfax won me over.  This retails for USD185.  Don't ask me if there is any retailers in Singapore selling this... cos I didn't find out, and I didn't know.

Elizabeth and James, in case you aren't aware, are the siblings to the Olsen twins, and this is their clothing and accessories label (in addition to The Row, if I am not wrong).  I love that it is not a pair of shades that yell its brand.. but if you know, you know.

Love the cat eye shaped, and the thin golden arms of the shades.  And I love how the name and brand is carved discreetly into the frame of the shades.

It seems to fit a little loosely on my face.. will get to adjusting it when I have the chance to.

Meanwhile, enjoy the beautiful pictures..of the shades. :)

for details on this LOTD, click here here here

some pictures I took with my iphone the day I received them

and I immediately tried them on.

they seem like the kind of shades that go perfectly well with no makeup, and red lips.

    Yay!

I have done a eyewear collection a few years back..

Would you like to see an updated eyewear collection entry?  Lemme know!

    Thanks for reading!

Shopbop Haul: House of Harlow Shades

I placed a shopbop order recently, because my brother wants me to get a pair of shades for him (he wanted to replace his broken black Ray Bans aviator) and soooooo I realised I still have this pair of shades in my shopping cart (darn those that remember what you half-heartedly added from previous window shopping moments) ----- so since it is still in my cart, and it is still in stock, I figure, it must meant to be!

This House of Harlow shades (USD138) is oversized, and trust me, it makes my HUGE ROUND fat face looks substantially smaller (and I must confess my camera angle makes my face look sharper than it really is -- no I didn't lose weight).

I like that the shape of the frame is not really round, and it looks quite angular too, but not totally cat-eyed shape.   And the 'arms' of the shades is the main detail of this pair of shades, with the tilt and dip.  I also like the dark grey color of the frames, something unique in my eyewear collection.

I think this particular model is now OOS on shopbop already.

This is my brother's happy purchase - he saved up for his shades.

    Classic black aviators, USD139

Over the weekend, I went to see a few great shows, collages below:

The Dreams & Reality - masterpieces from the Musee D'Orsay - really really worth a visit! :)

I had a work thing going on at the Chingay Parade over Fri and Sat.. had an all access pass, which allows me to sit wherever I wanted, and also backstage glimpses of the whole great show.  Tiring, but fun.  :)

    Haul! No Makeup, Just Fashion

    Yay!

If you read this little blog long enough, you know I shop a lot besides makeup, and I don't usually show 90% of the non-MU stuff I bought, simply because it's not very relevant...

Anyhow.... 2 pairs of Ray Bans were purchased, one for me and one for my sis... and I also got a cute FCUK blouse.

I wanted the Ray Bans aviator because I kind of want an update on my old pair, which has greyish gradient tinted lens.  Today I got a pair of gold framed pinkish brown one, and the sister got a black framed see thru brownish one. We got them at an optical store in Chinatown, simply because it is at these old school shops that you find the greatest and more classic Ray Bans, without the commericalised price tags.

Wearing a pair of nice stylish shades really distracts from the fact that you aren't wearing any makeup.  And these 'sheer' shades provide sun protection, and enough coverage and you don't really need to take them off indoors.

And this Fcuk blouse is cute!  I think it goes with anything and can be casual and formal depending on what bottom you match it with.  A denim shorts, great for summer, and a black pencil skirt will take you to the office boardroom.  Excuse the flatten chest area and track pants cos I was roaming about town today in my sports bra+jogging gear (though I wasn't doing anything like jogging at all).  Ha ha ha.

Yup, that's all, what are some of your recent fave fashion purchases??

    Thanks for looking!

Sunglasses Collection (and random TBS Olive Shampoo RAVE)

    Hi hi

So I decided to do a sunglasses collection, after watching one of my subscribed YT video today (lisalisaD1, I think, her user name), and that got me 'inspired' to do a little entry on my sunglasses collection.

Let me start with the The Body Shop Olive Glossing (?) shampoo first.  I really love this shampoo.  It makes my hair feel so clean, I like the smell, there is no sticky build up feeling, and makes my hair real shiny, as you can see for yourself in the set of pictures in this entry. Yup, that's about as close a review as you can get about this product... I love it, go buy it, go try it... they come in various sizes, if you are not sure, just buy a tiny bottle first.  :)

Ok... back to the sunglasses... Wearing sun glasses is great for several reasons. When you are sleepy, or look sleepy they are great disguises, to hide your face, when you just woke up and need to rush out of the house, have no time to do your makeup etc etc.. you must have one or two of those days when you just aren't ready to face the world yet.   They are also useful for when you want to look glamorous and cool while people watch at some poser cafe... very discreetly of course, so nobody can see your eyes rolling or staring behind the dark shades. And it is always so hot and sunny in Singapore, so a pair of shades is always useful to have, to protect your eyes from the harmful rays.

I have a big round face, but I never really follow any 'rules' when it comes to what type of frames I should wear.  Typically I always opt for the larger oversized shades, so my face don't look bigger... or how a smaller frame would make my face look big.  That's my logic.. and also, I tend to lean towards plastic frames... I like greyish/ blackish lenses rather than brownish ones.  And some type of shades I would never wear, that is those ultra sport Oakley types which kind of wrap around your eyes, and also aviator styles.. I used to wear mine from Ray Ban (get them at Chinatown - is it call People's Park? That place we got Mix & Match accessories-----  is the best and cheapest, never buy Ray Bans at those stores in town at rip off prices).   And I don't like shades with tacky blinged out side panels.... I like designer shades, but I prefer the logo etc to be discreet, instead of like HEY look I am wearing Gucci shades or whatever.

A little disclaimer before we go into the pictures:  I am not wearing any makeup in the pictures, except for Barry M lip paint (146) -- I guess the point is to show that wearing a pair of shades is the ultimate concealer?  Also it is obvious I adjusted the colors in all the pictures, since the focus of this entry is to show the shades, not makeup colors or anything...

    OK, so here we go:

    1.  Round Shades (in black and brown, S$10 a pair from Mustafa Shopping Centre. Bought 3 years ago at least.)

I like these ones, because although they are cheap, they don't feel cheap.  The plastic doesn't feel flimsy, and I can throw them around, and they have not gone all out of shape on me.  I wish I had gotten a couple more pairs in other colors though... now that I think of it.

    2. Cotton On retro shades.  (about S$5 or 10, can't remember) to be honest, I have not worn these at all.  I bought them cos I thought I wouls wear them, and I was drawn to the beige details on the frames.  But these feel super plasticky, light, and flimsy.

    On my nails, Essie Chinchilly

    3. Shades from La Chance ( which I bought in Tokyo, at Harujuku).  They cost about $10 each.  I love the white pair.  It is my everyday shades, and I can throw it around, they don't creak, and does not go all out of shape.

This is another pair bought at the same store, but in black, with gold detailing.  They are very large and 'pop out' from your face.

    4. Retro Metal frame shades (about S$25 a pair). Bought them at Beach Road market, one of those 2nd hand shops.  I like the shape and color of the lenses and they are comfortable for me to wear.  But I haven't worn them, because I am scared the metal frame would make my skin break out.

    5. Chloe Shades (about S$300+ when I bought it several years back). This is a pretty common classic Chloe design, and every season they release new colors.  Mine is transparent with light brown, mirrored lenses.  I like how it is subtle enough you don't really need to take them off even indoors. They are also super large.

    6.  Dior shades (S$350, bought a couple of years back).  I broke my first pair, but I love this so much, I had to get a new one to replace it -- cos I broke the first pair.  I like how OVERSIZED this pair of shades is.  And the plastic and everything all feel very solid.  I like how the logo isn't shouting to everybody HEY LOOK AT MY DIOR SHADES.  It is just a small logo Dior at the side of the frames.

    My Ultimate Lemming Shades:

Chanel Willy Wonka shades (from'07 S/S collection, don't think I can find them anymore, if anyone has seen this, let me know!!)

Dita Shades (which I spotted at On Peddar, they cost S$1200, no way I can ever justify spending that amount on shades, and besides I am too clumsy)

Tom Ford (about $500) Claude sunglasses.  So cool hippy chic ala John Lennon style

    That's all, thanks for reading...

Do share your sunglasses collection too! Would love to see what's in your wardrobe and which are your faves.  :)
