About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

No ads, no paid links etc please.  I am in charge of all content and pictures here.

I am not a makeup artist, nor do I have any professional training in makeup.

Urban Decay x Sephora Event with Naked Basics

    Hi hi!

A couple of weeks ago (3 Feb 2013), I had the chance to take part in a bloggers makeup demonstration featuring the URBAN DECAY Naked Palettes.  I was there together with Joey and Mag.  It was a fun event, quite relaxed as we got to bring along our own model friends to do the demonstration.  I brought along my sister - Beverley, and re-created her everyday look using the NAKED 1 palette, while Joey did a soft smokey look on her friend, and Mag did a more dramatic smokey look on her friend.

I had done makeup on other friends and relatives for random dinners and events before, but it was my first time doing makeup on someone else so openly, so naturally I was a little nervous... though having my own sis as my model makes it easier, and doing the demo together with Joey and Mag couldn't have been better.  And fortunately I am already quite familiar with Urban Decay products, so it was easy for me to plan what to use on my sister.

Many thanks to anyone who actually made their way to the event, and especially to my girlfriends who went to support us, took lots of pictures, Amy, Jerlaine and Claudia, plus my cousin etc etc...   Thank you Thank you!

Just want to share with you the pictures from the event, courtesy of Amy & Jerlaine who took most of the pictures, and also thanks to Joey for sending us the pictures from her camera.

A quick OOTD pic I posted on instagram before the start of the event:

Wore a black skull top from Zara, black pants from GAP, YSL Arty, T&Co. necklace, I am wearing Laura Mercier Lavender Cloud on my nails.

My sister prior to the start of the event.  Setting up the little counter, and picking out the items which I would be using.   It was a little nerve wrecking. Hehe.  She had already done her base and brows at home.

A quick Q&A before the start of the demonstration.  I just realised what a lot of hand movements I tend to make as I am talking.  :o

During the demonstration, and all of us hard at work!   I kind of wanted to finish up as soon as I could.  Heheh.

I used Urban Decay F-Bomb saturated lip pencil on her lips.  I probably applied 2 layers, blotting in between each layer.

And a group shot post event:

and some pictures which were snapped by Jerlaine using our iphones:

and a collage of the photos we got taken at the post event 'photobooth'.

all in all, it was quite a fun experience, and thanks to Sephora and Urban Decay Singapore for organising the event!

I also received a goodie bag for being part of the event, shall share with you all soon!

    Thanks for reading!

Haul: Laura Mercier Launches at Sephora

On Thursay, I met Sarah & Joey for a dinner chit-chat catching up, and we met at Sephora, and none of us walked out empty handed.  Firstly, we were all poring over the Laura Mercier display, swatching and oohhhing over the products.   Probably half an hour later, we were all a little sheepish, and discussed our purchases over dinner.

If you have seen my instagram feed, none of these is new to you, of course.

I bought 3 items, all base products - and now I have a complete routine using Laura Mercier products.   (speaking of which, I have a series of brand specific base routines & reviews coming up, Lancome Teint Miracle, Guerlain, DiorSnow, and lastly Laura Mercier).

The color makeup products look really yummy too, but I can't justify buying one more eyeshadow or one more blusher.  We were all very happy to know that the LM prices at Sephora are extremely comparable to the US prices, and way lower than the LM prices at True Colors!!  For example, I was told, the secret camou concealer palette retails for over $70 at True Colors, but I only paid $46 for mine at Sephora.  Besides everything at Sephora is FRESH stock, they didn't come out of funky smelling drawers at True Colors.

I will do swatches together with my routine & review in a later entry.  I wish they brought in the nail polish range though.  But the range of products they have is quite comprehensive, including 3 skincare items & makeup brushes.

    But I bought:

    1. Secret Camouflage Concealer SC-3  - $46

    2. Oil Free Supreme Foundation Blush Ivory - $68 (I think so.  It was so easy to find my shade!)

    3. Eye Basics in Flax $35 - kind of like an eyeshadow primer

and I already have the existing LM products to complete the foundation routine:

Translucent Loose Powder (retails for about $58 here I think)

Travel sized Tinted Moisturise (Bought in US)

a few pictures of the display

their Shimmer Bloc which looks like the BB Shimmerbricks

Have you checked out the Laura Mercier products yet?

That's all, and thanks for looking!

NEW Philosophy to Launch in Singapore this April

    Hi!

This past week, I had the chance to attend the press launch for Philosophy and I give an overview of the brand and some star products in this entry.  I am pretty sure Philosophy is a brand that many of you are familiar with, if I recall, True Colors stocks a very very selected range of Philosohy products.  And maybe there are some of you who are already regular Philosophy users if you get access to their products.  Personally, I was a fan of their Hope in a Jar 5 or 6 years back, when I saw this brand in Hong Kong, and I bought back ups of their star product to use.  Over time, I weaned away from it, because it was just getting a little tiresome to keep stocking up and I also moved on to other skincare brands.

Regardless, I am quite excited that Philosophy is launching here in Singapore.  It will be available from 27 April at all Sephora Stores in Singapore.  I don't have full price information and details, but the distributors have informed us that their price range is kept very reasonable, and as a brand, they are in similar price point of brands like Clinique and Khiels.  Another good news is that, they are bringing in all four categories of their products (and not just the skincare which is the foundation of the company).

I shall now proceed to give a quick overview of the four chapters of Philosophy products:

    Chapter One -- SKINCARE --

Philsophy is a mix of innovative formulas and musings on life and love - a fresh point of view, and when you use Philosophy products, it is a unique experience.  In the US, it is the fourth biggest selling brand and in 2010, the fastest selling in Sephora and TV shopping channel QVC.

A few of their key products:

    HOPE IN A JAR

It is a high performance moisturiser for all skin types.  It helps to reduce the appearance of dull skin, rough texture and dehydration.  (Oprah Winfrey listed hope in a jar among her top ten favourite things 6 times from 1996 - 2010).

PURITY - 3-in-1 cleanser for face and eyes

This is an award winning 3-in-1 cleanser for face and eyes that removes makeup, cleanses, tones and lightly hydrates the skin, all in one simple step.  It rapidly dissolves dirt, oil and makeup, while helping to maintain the skin's proper moisture levels.  It is gentle enough for use around the eye area and on sensitive skin.  It is formulated with 12 essential oils to help calm and soothe skin.

    MIRACLE WORKER

These are miraculous anti-aging retinoid pads that deliver youthful, radiantly luminous skin in one easy step.  This fresh-pour, skin-restoring elixir is formulated with hpr next-generation retinoid technology that helps maximises skin's rejenvation potential, while minimising the risk of irritation commonly associated with traditional retinols.

    Features:

diminishes the appearance of wrinkles, dramatically improves skin discoloration and promotes flawless clarity

loaded with anti-oxidants, skin conditioners and soothers to deliver miraculous results

We also got to experience several of their products during the event, including:

the "turbo booster c powder" a high-potency vitamin c powder that helps prevent premature aging by acting as an anti-oxidant and supporting natural collagen, helpiing to improve skin's overall tone.

their "microdelivery peel" - touted as the 3 minute skin makeover.  this is a two-step in-home peel that dramatically rejuvenates the appearance of sun-damaged, hyperpigmented and aging skin.  it helps to resurface and replenish the skin with peptides and vitamin c, so skin feels significantly smoother and appears radiant

    CHAPTER TWO -- FRAGRANCE --

Philosophy has four fragrances - which have ultra clean notes that are easy to wear and designed to enhance your sense of well-being.  They also come with a full range of matching bath products.

amazing grace - clean floral scent

pure grace - soap and water clean fragrance, like you just stepped out of the shower

eternal grace - classic clean, crisp notes, along with delicate florals and bright citrus

inner grace -  sophisticated, soft floral scent

    CHAPTER THREE -- Bath & Body --

The section of the launch that got everyone of us the most excited, most likely because of the divine, seriously delicious scents and colorful bottles of bath products.  I was told the largest bottle - as shown in the pic below, will retail for S$29.90.  If that's correct, I am so grabbing all of them come April 27!!!

the melon daiquiri and be somebody are my fave scents among those I got to sniff.

    CHAPTER FOUR -- GIFTING --

Because life is beautiful and everyday is a gift, celebrate life's moments with these gift sets which are available year-round.

Overall, I am quite excited for this launch, and I think it would be one of the more popular brands at Sephora (yes, I think so!).

    Can't wait for April!

Shall end this entry with some lovely cupcakes pictures!

That's all, and thanks for looking!

Collective Haul: Sephora Heaven! [Swatches too]

These are about 90% of the stuff I bought at Sephora when I was in the US last week.  These products were purchased in both SF and Vegas... I like going into the store and just playing around with the makeup and everything.  The rest of the items will be featured under specific categories which are coming up in later entries.

And surprise, surprise.. I didn't get any NARS nor Tarte throughout my whole trip.

Click on each picture for more information, and also lots of swatches where possible.

    Enjoy!  Thanks for looking!

Makeup Heaven Part 10: Sephora on Las Vegas Blvd

It is very easy to get lost in Sephora, lost in the myriad of makeup brands, the loud music, mirrors, colours, everything is overwhleming your senses.

Within the heaps of makeup and products, there is also some organisation.  Some products are organised by type depending on the season, the popularity, in addition to just by brands.

Ultimately, I like the idea that you are shopping for all these high-end makeup as though you are in a supermarket, you swatch and play with the items, and the stock is right there on the shelves, so you just grab and go make payment at the register.

The sale staff are so friendly, and walking about to make sure you are attended to, but yet they don't FOLLOW you around the store.

For example, there is a chart-topping type of product shelf, where the top selling mascara/ primer/ bronzer/ perfume are displayed.

there is also a huge bar area where you can have a impromptu makeover, try out products, and if there are makeup lessons and demos going on, there is also space for benches, where you can sit and watch.

And of course, lots of cotton pads, alcohol solution, makeup removers, disposable applicators for you to try on products and swatch.

And some makeup brands which we are all familiar with:

I spent a long time at the YSL shelf... swatching all the lipsticks.

    The shimmery Rouge Volupte

And while making payment at the line, there is also these little racks filled with travel-sized goodies.  I got suckered into buying too many of these little goodies!

    Thanks for looking!

Makeup Heaven Part 8: Sephora on Las Vegas Blvd - MUFE Galore!

The Sephora store on Las Vegas Blvd has a huge MUFE section inside, it stocks all the pro items [ie special effects stuff, hair stuff, colors etc etc], and so I thought this deserves a special entry of its own.  Also I swatched all the new MUFE Aqua  Liners in case you are interested [didn't bother with swatching the white/ clear one though].

The store has a beautiful facade, because it is part of the Venetian building, which is very 'ancient Roman' style architecture -- and best of all, it is just a 5 minute walk from the Palazzo past the gondola and a while stretch of high-end shopping.  Also the Madam Tussaud wax museum is located above the Sephora.

There are also 2 more Sephora stores located further down the strip, and at Town Square.  But this is my absolute fave one.

I bought these two Aqua Liners, #14 and #12.

Check out how they glisten in the natural lighting, and with the multi-color shimmers!

I have 2 or 3 more parts of Sephora heaven to be posted, stay tuned!

    Thanks for looking!

Sephora Haul & Rave: Soap & Glory's Clean on Me, Amazing Cosmetics Concealer!

    Hi hi,

so yesterday I went to Sephora Ion and bought a huge bag of goodies, and since they are  mostly gifts for pals, I am not going to show them in the following pictures.  What you see here are stuff I got for myself. And since I have been using them for some time, I shall also do mini raves about each of these items:

Soap & Glory Clean on Me $12 for 200ml (Shower Shampoo)

I bought my first bottle one month ago, and I used it almost everyday.  Perhaps 20% is still remaining? Click HERE to see that haul entry.

Why I am raving about this shower shampoo:

    • Smells great!  It has a matching scent in most of the body lotions and the perfume too, so you can layer the fragrance, if you wish to.  But it isn't anything overpowering or long lasting, so you can still use your own perfume without 'clashing'.  (I say this in comparison to LUSH shower shampoos which smells a lot more in your face--in a nice way!).
    • Lives up to its claim... clean skin that is moisturised.  After I towel dry my body, I always always notice and ahem, am amazed by how soft my skin feels, even my calves which is usually rougher.  It does leave a slightly slippery feeling after rinsing off, but not too  bad, unlike some shower shampoos which make me feel like I didn't rinse off thoroughly.  I think this is the most impressive part of using Clean on Me, how soft and smooth it makes my skin feels.
    • Lathers up to a rich foam -- I always use a shower lily, that helps the shower shampoo to lather up, and also gives my skin a good gentle scrub everytime I shower.

Why I don't like about it ---- if you look at the pump it comes with, it dispenses a tiny amount with each pump, and I find that I have to use 5 - 6 pumps to get enough product out.  I much prefer those pumps where you just pump once for sufficient product to lather up.   That said, it has nothing to do with the product  itself, so I don't really care... but just saying, you know?

And next item is the Amazing Cosmetics Concealer.  I got mine in the larger tube, 15ml for $63, and the shade I got is 02 Light Golden.

Do check out my basic makeup on how to fake flawless skin, where I ramble on in greater detail on my concealer theory.  Click HERE.

Ok, so I haven't used this for a long time, but I want to rave about it.   Because, and I confess, whenever I go to Sephora, I always swatch this concealer on my spots, and the coverage never ever fails to amaze me.  It renders the spots I was trying to hide invisible!  So I had to get it for myself.

One thing though, if you aren't careful with the tube, like squeeze it accidentally, the concealer oozes out like nobody's biz (I know from the sample tubes in the store)... so do keep the box it comes with, especially if you are going to throw it in your makeup bag ( I know I will ), so it doesn't get squashed and you don't end up with messy concealer stains and spills in your makeup bag.

Also, check that you got your correct shade in the box, and that the seal is still intact on the opening.

I shall do a quick impromptu demonstration of how it covers up my spots.  (impromptu, because I don't have any foundation on -- which is usually how I would use the concealer in my routine).

    * I know in the final result picture the coloring seems more yellowish but that's not due to the colour of the concealer, just that I changed the white balance settings on my camera halfway while taking pictures.*

Love love love it, and I think the formula is light enough for you to use under your eyes (use a fluffy brush to blend out to the thinnest layer)....but I will only be using this primarily for spots coverage....as I only use all my brightening pen/brush types for under the eyes work.

I also bought a pair of my fave Ardel Lashes --- it costs $9 at Sephora but $8.90 at Watsons, Guardian, John Little, Robinsons..... hmmmm...oh well.. this #120 is always always OOS wherever I go, so I had to buy it when I saw it.

That's all, and hope you find this helpful!

    Thanks for reading!

ps  shall go nap now, and then get ready for Sarah's Arabian themed party! yay!

Haul: Guerlain Lingerie De Peau Foundation (Feels like Silk on your Skin)

    Hi hi!!

I was wondering around town on Sunday, and I passed by the Guerlain counter (maybe I intentionally passed by because I got the mailer that their new foundation is launched).  So anyhow, I wanted to swatch and play around with the texture, and if the price fits, I want to buy one for myself.

Guerlain Lingerie De Peau foundation retails for S$85 for 30ml.

The promo images of the foundation is lovely, with a very sensual (boobage heavy shot) of Natalia Vodianova peering into her reflection, probably wondering in amazement how great the foundation feels on her skin.

Here is what Guerlain has to say about the product:

"Silk and linen weave themselves into a second skin

Selected from among the most luxurious textile fibres, silk and linen combine their complementary qualities, weaving an imperceptible veil of perfection on the surface of the skin in a voluptuous sensation of comfort and drapes the complexion in a silky radiance that captures an reflects the light.  Ultra-mattifying powders and pigments are woven into the linen to help refine the texture of the skin and give it a velvety softness.  On the skin itself nothing is visible except the natural appearance of a perfect complexion"

The bottle itself is made of glass, very sleek, and with the Guerlain emblem on the cover.

Why I am interested to try this foundation out is the rave review from Holly (yummy mommy blog), and also several other beauty blogs I came across. And I am a foundation junkie, so of course I had to get it.  I do realise, I have a subconscious aversion to trying out Chanel foundations.  Dunno why...

I had a hard time in the store choosing which shade is right for me, because both 32 Amber Claire and Beige Claire 02 seem very very close to my skin tone.  In the end, though, I bought 32 Amber Claire.  But I got the BA to give me a sample of the other shade so I can try out at home too.  There is a mineral loose powder which is also released with this foundation, and it smells heavenly....but the very very young and inexperienced BA was so frazzled after serving me, I didn't feel like stressing her out with more queries and 'demands'.  Maybe another time I will go back again and bug the BAs there.

The consistency of it looks and feels like my NARS Sheer Glow, it is rather liquidy.

Tried a quick swatch over my already made up face yesterday.

    Blends into my skintone.  Phew!

In terms of coverage I would say it is medium, but leaning more to light. On a scale of 1 to 10, perhaps a 5 exactly.  Same as NARS Sheer Glow too.  But it is even lighter than Lancome's Teint Miracle.  I also very much prefer the finish of this foundation over the NARS Sheer Glow.  And it really feels like soft luxurious silk on your face.

These are the shade range available.

Of course, I would not be able to say much about the foundation at this point in time, I am wearing it today, and I am liking the finish!  The coverage is decent for me, but I am very impressed by how light it is.  Like it really fuses into your skin, and gives a soft-touch glow.

In case anyone is wondering, I am wearing Illamasqua Rumor to lightly contour, MAC's Happy Together mineralised blush.  I also lightly set the foundation with my Laura Mercier translucent loose powder, and used Lancome's pro base underneath.

Eyes and lips are completely bare.

I will give a fuller review in time to come.

Then I also went to Sephora on Sunday, to use my $40 voucher, and since the Clarisonic brush head for delicate skin is recently re-stocked, I bought it as stock up.  The delicate brush head is the most suitable for all skin types, really.

The bristles are slightly softer than the sensitive brush set which comes with the bundle set.

That's all, and thanks for reading.  Hope it has been helpful!
