About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

The YSL Rose Gold Arty Ring [and a matching manicure]

    Hi hi!

Last Monday, Net a Porter had a random one day only free shipping on all orders, and I took the chance to place an order for the new YSL Arty Ring in rose gold hardware.  Well, it took me the whole day to decide to purchase another Arty Ring.  In the end, the rose gold and good price factors won me over.  Besides it is becoming quite a classic, no?  And the total price of what I paid for this ring from net-a-porter ends up being a good $80 cheaper than if I were to get it in the actual store in Singapore.

The stone itself has specks of gold in it.  The navy deep blue stone looks cool and dark depending on the angle and the lighting conditions.  I ordered mine in a size larger than my current red love Arty, so that I could wear it on my middle or index finger.

    Here's a close up:

And I did a manicure to match the ring - kind of look like the stone, right?   I love how it looks on my hand... the rose gold matches my skintone, and it fits my middle finger just nicely (slightly big though).  I got a size 8 btw, and my red one is size 7.  I don't really fuss about the sizing, but I always decide on a size larger than what I think I am... you can fit a bigger ring on other fingers, but there's nothing much you can do about a smaller ring.

Here's what I used to create the manicure - Chanel Blue Satin and OPI Man with the Golden Gun topcoat.

Here's a color comparison with my current red Love Arty Ring, you can really see the rose gold of the other ring..

I really love my latest YSl arty ring.  I hope I don't make this into some kind of a 'collection' habit!  :o

That's all, and thanks for looking!

    The Rose Gold Ring

    Hi!

We were at Isetan Orchard over the weekend - and there is this stall selling 'Made in Korea' accessories - and the rings, this ring - stood out to me.  And totally won Jerlaine and I over.  We bought the same ring... it is a delicate yet sturdy 'rose gold' color/ plated ring... and it kind of looks like a rope, a piece of string tied into a bow.  And that there is a little bit of bling just at the corner of the bow, adding a girly touch of detail.

    How much?  $16

It comes in silver and gold too.  But you know I have a penchant for rose gold accessories.  So rose gold it must be.

    Love everything about it.

It's delicate and girly without being too.

    It's not too small.

    It's affordable.

It's a bow ring without being too cliched.

    Fits my finger perfectly.

    It doesn't look like $16.

    In one word,

    LOVES.

[p/s it's from one of the makeshift stalls facing the basement of Isetan Orchard, near the Laneige counter]

Let's admire this ring some more...

p/s  I applied a coat of OPI Don't Touch my TuTu on my fingernails to prevent them from looking too dull in this picture

by the window, at the hotel room where we spent Jerlaine's birthday over the weekend  :)

a happy and relaxing weekend was enjoyed by all

and I was wearing Chanel's Pirate on my fingernails too - sexy red

That's all, and thank you for looking.

Mini ASOS Haul [Ring & Bourjois Bronzer]

    Hi hi,

Just a mini order I made on ASOS recently.  I actually wanted a grey dress - which didn't fit me, and therefore will not be shown - the dress fits my sister, so she got a free dress instead.

I also ordered two other items - this beautiful ring, which I have been wearing for the past few days, and have gotten at least compliments fom 10 people who have seen me wearing it.  It looks vaguely like the YSL Arty ring, but at a tiny fraction of the price [about S$30].

Then, I ordered this Bourjois bronzer - which I confessed, I completely forgot.. I just knew I ordered 3 items, but didn't know the bronzer is part of the deal.  Heheheheh.  It is about USD17.

I like the 360 degrees shrivel around mirror.  The powder feels very smooth, slightly powdery.  There are some shimmers in the compact, but it looks mostly matte after swatching.  Probably the only reason I bought it is after hearing lots of raves from some of my fave YT people, and I don't think I have seen this bronzer in Singapore before.

Swatches of the bronzer heavy applied and blended out.

That's all, and thanks for looking!

    Christmas Goodies for myself

    Hi!

So I went out with my gfs today, and we went shopping!  I wanted to fulfil part of the Christmas wishlist, and so got myself a couple of pressies.  But before we go onto that, I needed to get a new MAC palette, not because I had accquired so many MAC shadows lately, but because my 'colors' palette is cracked at the hinges, and I wanted to replace that.   So I will dig out the dividers and squeeze all my eyeshadows inside.

    $25 each for this palette.

Then we hit the stores, and Tiffany & Co. is first on the list.  I bought myself 2 goodies, in the form of my mesh ring (sz6) and a bracelet.  I didn't get the 'charm' tag bracelet as that's kind of common and quite a few of my friends already have that.  So I bought this silver ball thing bracelet.  Both items were within my budget, so that kind of justify the purchases.  I had actually wanted to get a T&Co 1837 Heart Pendant to go with my 'key' chain, but the pendant comes with a chain which I already own, so I decided on the bracelet instead.

When it comes to my T&Co. stuff, I usually wear them in a very 'clashing' manner, and mixing them with  my regular stuff so they don't look so 'typical' girly, like 'hey check out what I am wearing' or watever, if you know what I mean.   Then when worn on their own with a black dress, or some dressy outfit, it would look quite classic too.

This is what I mean by the 'clashing' style, with  my trusty $20+ casio watch, beaten up leather studdy straps, and the bracelet! :)

Perhaps another update on the Louis Vuitton bag to buy or not update, I actually went to both the LV stores in town today, and somehow the crowd in both stores turn me OFF the idea.  Everyone has an LV bag, and that really puts me off.  And also the sillly small handle issue of the one bag which I think I am attracted to, and well, ultimately, 'I think I am attracted to' is not good enough to plonk the $$ on something I don't need as I always end up lugging around some other old bag.   Well, that's just my opinion, of course.  I know there are plenty of LV fans out there and would prolly disagree with me.
