About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Shiseido Perfect Rouge & Perfect Rouge Tender Sheer: My TOP Picks [Swatches, LOTDs]

Hi hi this entry features 4 colors I picked from Shiseido's latest Perfect Rouge - I have previously featured the new range and swatches in this entry here.

I wanted to go for something bold, yet classic, so here we have:

RD142 - the color which is featured in the ad campaign

RD514 - the classic Shiseido RED

RS745 - a beautiful mauvey rosy almost plum shade

RS509 - a sheer version of RS745, it contains silvery shimmer bits

The Perfect Rouge are super creamy, and long lasting.  I love how the colors are so intense across the range, and they offer something for everyone, whether you want beigy nudes, pinky nudes, bold pinks and oranges, etc.  The Tender Sheer delivers super creamy color, and while they aren't as color intense as the Perfect Rouge, I must say that they quite pigmented as well.

Love the formula of these lipsticks, they are so easy to apply, and you get true color on your lips as what you see in the tube.

Here's a quick LOTD I did to complement all the lip colors - all products used will be listed at the end fo this entry.

    All products used:

Face - Maquillage Styling Keep Base UV, Shiseido Radiant Lifting Foundation, Chanel Translucent Loose Powder

Concealer - cle de peau beaute concealer

Cheeks - Illamasqua Tremble blush, Shiseido Bronzer 02 medium, Shiseido Luminizing Face Satin Color PK107 (to highlight)

Lips - as listed in the pictures above

Eyes - NARS primer, Shiseido Luminizing Satin Eye Color Trio in BR209, Shu Uemura Farfarlina lashes

Brows - Shu Uemura brow manicure Ash Brown, brow pencil in Seal Brown

Hope this is helpful, and thanks for reading!

LOTD: The Ultimate Red Lips with GA Lip Maestro

    Hi hi!

Here I will be showing you how both the red Lip Maestro look on me.  I did a simple look, just something shiny on the eyes, lashes and a clean natural complexion.  Definitely something appropriate for a formal event and also somewhere casual.

I have many red lipsticks, but currently I am most excited by the Lip Maestro.  From the application, to the overall look and finish, it is such a pleasant experience wearing them.  Despite the richness of the formula, they don't feel heavy at all.  Definitely something attention catching when you wear these colours out, and I personally find them very chic.  I would also compare these to the NARS matte velvet pencils and Chanel Rouge Allure Mat Velvet in terms of the feeling, and the NARS pure matte lipsticks feel more matte compared to the Lip Maestros.

For swatches in the previous entry - click here.

All products used (all Giorgio Armani unless stated otherwise)

Face - Master Primer SPF40 PA+++, Maestro Fusion Makeup 04 (I applied and built up 2 layers, but didn't set with powder), cle de peau concealer Ivory

    * I am impressed again by how beautifully the Maestro foundation photographs.  It's really smoothing and makes my skin look flawless. *

Cheeks - MUFE Mat Bronzer, Mirco Fil Loose Powder (pink) to highlight the cheeks and add a subtle touch of pink

Lips - Lip Maestro in 400 and 402

Eyes - NARS Primer, Eyes to Kill Intense 09 (applied on the lids with a MAC217 brush), THREE Eye Doll Pencil 07

Lashes - two pairs of Ardel 120 layered

Brows - Shu Uemura brow pencil 09, Shu Uemura brow manicure ash brown

    400

    402

A special mention on this THREE pencil which you have seen me raving about in recent entries.  My gf gifted me with it recently, she has bought it during her holiday to Japan... and these pencils are pricey - but the formula and the color are definitely worth it.  There are all these tiny multi-color shimmers that make you look at it, at first look, it's a khaki gold pencil, but when you look closer there are little fine bits of pink and gold.  Once the pencil sets, it didn't budge at all.

Hope you enjoyed this LOTD and quick overview.

I have been enjoying color on my lips for the most part of this year.... I think it really adds to the whole look, and gives some personality to my regular makeup.  Let me know if you would like a more detailed rundown of my fave reds, and my fave natural color lippies for the year.  Right off the cuff, I can tell you there will be lots of NARs and Diors involved.   :p

    Thanks for reading!

The Giorgio Armani Lip Maestros will launch in Singapore from Jan 2013.   I expect them to retail for about $50.

Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro in 400 & 402 [Photos & Swatches]

    Hi hi

I purchased two red Lip Maestro recently while I was in Hong Kong.  They retail for about SGD$50 each.  As I mentioned in my swatches entry - the brights and reds are way more suited for the formular and finish of the Lip Maestro - that rich velvety matte finish with a deep or bright red is really way more attractive than the usual nudes and beiges.  That's just my opinion of course.  And not surprisingly, everyone else seem to think the same way - all the gorgeous brights and reds were sold out everywhere in HK, only the browny nudes and tan shades were left.

I thought I had to wait for the Singapore release of these Lip Maestros - cos 402 which is the red I really wanted, was OOS everywhere.  Imagine my surprise when I went back to the very same counter a couple of days later and the staff there told me they had stock for 402.  (FYI 402 is the shade on the ad campaign it is a bright bright red) and I quickly grabbed one for myself.  I had already purchased 400, a slightly deeper red.

For collection information and more photos on the Lip Maestro, click my feature entry here.

For swatches of all the Lip Maestro swatches, click here.

The sponge tip applicator is longish and fine, making it quite easy for a precise application.  You really just need the tiniest amount of this and spread it evenly on your lips.  If you need more, then layer it bit by bit.  The overall finish should be quite velvety matte (I can't say this enough) and not all gooey, or else it will go all over your teeth.

Here's a slap on type of swatch - it looks a little shiny due to the sheer thickness.

But you see, the velvety matte finish comes through after I dabbed and spread the product a bit with my fingertips.  And this is how it looks like in the ad campaigns.  (link link)

Here's a comparison with other rich matte reds and similar products in my stash:

Lancome Mat Cashmere 300 (from their Fall 2012 collection, Limited edition) review here  -- very similar in terms of texture and finish. but this is limited edition,  and comes in only this shade.

Tom Ford Lip Lacquer in Cherry Lush - review here - has that same shade of bright red as 402 but it has this pinky red undertone whereas 402 has an orangey undertone.

Chanel Rouge Allure Lacque Dragon (discontinued) has the same depth and shade as 400 - Temptalia has a comparison - but both have very different finishes, Chanel Dragon has a satin finish, while 400 is of course velvety matte.

    Lip swatches:

They are pretty long lasting, and really amazing.  As Lisa Eldridge says, she loves to wear a red lip when wearing just a tee, jeans and going out to run errands.  I agree.  Who says that a red lip, whether it's Chanel or Giorgio Armani, is only confined to special ocassions?  It really makes one look groomed and brightened up without having to do much.

I hope this rundown has been useful, and I will be posting a LOTD entry next.

The Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro will be available in Singapore from Jan 2013.

Two Iconic Red Lipsticks from YSL [Photos & Swatches]

    Hello!

I seem to can't get enough of red lipsticks, right?  And these two from YSL are just simply beautiful and perfect.  In terms of formula, they are rich, intense, and totally creamy.   They are practically identical, and I would consider them neutral reds.

YSL Rouge Pur Couture 01 Le Rouge - I was told this is their signature red shade, and it is no wonder why.  The color is univerally flattering and totally le smoking hot.

YSL Rouge Volupte 17 Red Muse is a slightly, just a little bit cooler red, and the rouge volupte formula is famous for their ultra creamy and smooth texture.  My younger sis loves this range of YSL lippies, and I have a feeling Red Muse is going to be one of her all time fave reds.

    A quick comparison.

These lippies are very smooth and creamy.  Slapping them on take some decisive swipes and careful application so that I don't end up smearing them all over my lips.   If you are not used to wearing these strong reds, it is best to line your lips with a pencil, and use a lip brush.

I blotted them off with tissue after taking the photos,  What reminds is a beautiful matte stain that looks equally beautiful.

I am falling in love with this pair of YSL reds.

    Lip swatches and LOTD:

On the rest of my face:

YSL Touche Eclat Foundation, Touche Eclat 01 and 02 under my eyes, Dior Snow spot concealer

Cheeks YSL Blush 06, Guerlain Terrecota Bronzer

Eyes: Burberry Trench eyeshadow, Pale Barley eyeshadow

    YSL Black Pencil liner

    Ardel 120 lashes

YSL is now located at ION basement, and you can also order YSL from the TANGS eStore.

Hope this has been helpful, and thank you for reading!

Saks.com Haul: Lancome Rouge in Love 170N Sequins D amour [Photos, Swatches & Comparisons]

    Hi hi!

This is another goody I purchased from Saks.com, it is the US edition of the Lancome Rouge in Love lipstick (USD$25 each).  The US editions, if you aren't aware, are a different formula from the Asian editions we get around here.  Our Asian version is extremely smooth and creamy, but it lacks the full intense color payoff of the US edition.   So I am very very curious to try the US edition ones....and this particular shade, 170N called out to me, because I saw it being featured in a Lisa Eldridge video (her re-creation of makeup done on Kate Winslet for the Titanic red carpet link link link).

170N Sequins D’amour is a neutral to warm toned red lipstick.  NARS Jungle Red which I featured in the previous entry is a slightly deeper neutral red, while NARS Dragon Girl and Chanel 31 Cambon are both cooler toned reds.  This is a really classic shade, and I really really love the texture and the amazing color payoff.  I would definitely want to purchase more colors if I have the chance, in perhaps neutral shades.

It is so creamy, and I would apply it straight from the tube.  However, I noticed a little of color feathering at the edges of the lip shape.. so you might want to use a lip liner and/or blot off the first layer, and re-apply a second layer.  Hence, when applying it on your lips do watch out for the bleeding/ feathering issue.

I am just super in love with this classic red shade!

    Close up on my face...

Again, it is a red that brightens up my face, and really makes for a chic classy red.  Loves loves!

Just a quick comparison, for you to see the different undetones.

Because my own skintone is rather light and  neutral, I think I could pull off both types of red.

That's all, and I hope you find this entry helpful!

    Thank you for reading!
