About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

BeautyAsia 2013 Haul: Four ORLY nailpolishes

    Hi hi!

Sometime back, I went to the Beauty Asia Fair 2013 with Sarah... we checked out the annual beauty fair, and I was most looking forward to getting myself some Hakuhodo brushes..but when I realised that they were not for actual retail sale (the brand is looking for local retailers) I was like...what's there to get?

Well, I got some random nail supplies (base coats & seche vite, not that I need them, but it is nice to have endless supply of backups..haha), hair mask, and these Orly polishes.  I have vaguely heard of these colors, but never really got into buying them.  When I saw how gorgeous the glitter effects are, I just allowed myself to grab a few.

They didn't swatch very well, partly I was a little impatient, and they turned out quite gunky.....but here we go:

Sunglasses at Night - holographic glitter strips... I love how they really catch the light, and just shine very mysteriously in the sheer jelly black base.  I think this is best applied over a black base as shown.  The base formula is on the thick side, so I was torn trying to get as many of the strips out, and not to lay on too thick a layer...and the same goes for the other two glitter shades...

Can't be Tamed - purple glitter packed with lots of smaller silver and maybe black glitter bits.
Ultraviolet - like the name states... this is chocfull with glitter bits and applies the most easily and evenly among the 3 glitter polishes.

    Quick swatches over black:

And lastly, we have Orly Rage - a pale rose gold that's a hot fave among many.  The formula is impressive, you can get away with one even coat, but I applied two coats here for maximum impact.  It's realy gorgeous.

That's all I have for this entry.

    Thanks for looking!

Nails Story: Lunasol EX34 Medium Beige [Swatches & Comparisons]

I bought my first Lunasol product at Metro during their 20% off event last Friday.  I have been swatching off and on the Lunasol nail colors - SUPER IMPRESSED by their consistency and payoff, and also due to raves by Joey... so anyway, I caved, and bought EX34 Medium Beige (about $18.80 after 20% discount) -- this is a dangerous thing, because now I feel like I can't just do with only one Lunasol in my stash!  There is a gorgeous red, and some other gorgeous dark metallic purple calling out to me... but for now, I think I am happy with this purchase.

Medium Beige is like I am wearing a darker foundation on my hands.  It is so smooth, and the subtle shimmer is just really pretty.  The brush of the nail polish is very high qualitly, no stray hairs and it fans out perfectly to fit my nails.  And it is really smooth like butter.  I have tried my fair share of high-end nail polish, and Lunasol ones are definitely UP THERE in terms of the fine quality.

The shimmer effect is not very obvious once the color is worn on my nails though, just an FYI.  But it doesn't really bother me.

    Photos & swatches:

    Comparisons

I pulled out a few shimmery tans/ beiges in my collection

just to show the range of colors in this category...

    and in detail

I think the Lunasol color might be the closest to Chanel's Khaki Rose

Nails Story: Four Glittery Festive Shades from OPI, China Glaze & Orly [Photos & Swatches]

I picked up these polishes from various sources (Nail Vibe, Flea at Scape & some another un-named seller - not going to purchase from her again, so it's not important to know).   If you want to buy OPI, China Glaze for cheaps, do check out some of the larger stalls at Scape flea over the weekends, OPIs usually go for $10, and there are deals for China Glaze at 3 for $20.

Anyway, all four shades happen to be glittery festive colors from the brands' Christmas collections.  I have previously swatched the ORLY colors before on a nail wheel, but I really want to see how they apply on my own nails.

First we have two gunmetal+holographic+glitter polishes -- China Glaze 'Some Like It Haute' and ORLY "Rock Solid"

Quick comparison - in the bottles both look somewhat simila - though the CG shade looks darker, while the ORLY shade is more silvery and contains larger  holographic chunks.

However, the differences come in when both are applied on the nails - the CG shade is a jelly-like base, I applied two coats but you can still see my own nails in between the dense glitters.  Because the base color is not opaque, it actually comes off lighter than the ORLY shade - which is opaque in two coats, and the larger holographic bits doesn't quite translate onto the nails very well.

Rock Solid looks really quite wowza in the bottle, don't you agree?

As you can see the CG color is lighter, and looks more holographic in this picture taken with soft flash.

Overall, I love both shades, and they are great with most outfits and colors.

Next is another color from the OPI Muppets collection - Warm & Fozzie.  The base color is a bronzey gold, with purple, fuschia, and gold bits -- it's really quite a rich and intense shade.

When applied, I realised that the base color is a darkened brown, and you need two coats or even three thinner coats for full intense payoff.

I compared Warm & Fozzie with two other glittery bronze and gold shades in my shade - not the same as all, but just to give you an idea of how they compare....I hope my pictures capture the different colored bits in Warm & Fozzie!  I think this would be an awesome shade for my toes. :)

And the last one we have here is Rococo A Go-Go by ORLY... I had used this shade during my express manicure flea over the weekend on a couple of girls... and I quite enjoy the formula on this shade.  It gives true color payoff in two coats, and looks very bit multi-dimensional as it looks in the bottle.

I had to use some flash to bring out the texture of this color, because it was such a cloudy morning when these pictures were taken.  Very velvety, rich purpley color with duochrome golden fuschia tones.

Which of these have caught your eyes?

Hope this has been helpful, and thanks for looking.

Nails Story: Essie's Cocktail Bling Collection for Holiday 2011 [Swatches & Comparisons]

Just a quick swatch entry... I soaked off my Gelish manicure, and finally am able to play around with my recent nail polish purchases... so expect a few swatch entries this week...starting with the Essie Cocktail Bling collection.  (You can purchase this collection from Nail Vibe).

I have mentioned in my previous entry on this collection... the colors aren't unique (as you can see later with the comparison swatches), but I am blown away by the formula.  You can't go wrong with the buttery smooth consistency, all the shades are high-gloss, opaque and just perfect.

Now I can't wait for the upcoming Essie Luxe Effects Collection --- swatches and review link here!

My fave for this is Brooch the Subject!

Another nude....but I love all nude shades.  They are my weakness.

    Dupe Alert!

Deborah Lippmann Fashion [3 coats] vs Essie Brooch the Subject [2 coats]

99% similar.  The Essie shade is creamier and more opaque.

Comparisons with other recent Essie nudes

All totally different, in my opinion.

    Cocktail Bling

Kinda looks like Illamasqua's DWS...milky creamy grey - though I didn't swatch them side by side.

I guess they might be a 90% dupe.

    Bangle Jangle

    (way better than Essie's Lilacism)

    Size Matters

Gorgeous red with a cool toned almost kinda raspberry kind of undertone.  It's hard to explain.  It's a red without any orangey warm undertones... you will see what I mean in the comparison swatches.

    And lastly,

    Bobbing for Baubles

'interesting' black, well because it is not a black.

It's a deep dark bluish grey.

Totally reminds me of NARS Gallion...95% similar...with different undertones...but the color is so dark you can't really tell anyway.

That's all, and hope this is helpful!

Nails Story: ORLY's Mineral FX Fall 2011 Collection [Photos & Quick Swatches]

I had placed orders for two ORLY Mineral FX collection shades a couple of weeks ago from Nail Vibe , and I received them recently in my mailbox.  Only one of these shades is mine though.. the other one is for my sister.  What stood out to me in this collection is the high sparkle glimmer factor.... and I tried to pick shades which are more unique in my opinion.

Collection information taken from scrangie and you can read her review and proper swatch pictures HERE

The innovator in color and texture, ORLY is the first to create a nail polish that provides high impact, prismatic color infused with minerals. The daring color palette reflects smooth, metallic shimmers embellished with holographic sparkle and burnished gold undertones accented with ultra rich jeweled hues. Mineral FX draws inspiration for these shades from the richness and depth of the tones found in precious metals and rare minerals.

    Rock Solid i
s a shimmery gunmetal base with bigger holographic bits which really blings and stood out in natural daylight.

Rococo A Go-Go --- which my sister ordered --- is a deadringer for Zoya Valerie

    * I compared both the Orly and Zoya shades... and they do look super alike... though if you want to be very technical about it, you can go into the nuances of the sparkle and compare sizes and shapes of the bits... but the bottomline is, they are both 95% similar and you don't need to own both at all.

Love both sophisticated and fun colors!

    Thank you for looking!

Nails Story: Orly's Nite Owl [Swatches & Comparisons]

    Hi!

This nail polish is part of the new limited edition release from Orly's Birds of a Feather collection - there are 6 beautiful shades, but I was controlled and went for my safe shade, which is Nite Owl, a beige densely packed with silvery shimmers.

I ordered mine from Nail Vibe and it came super fast (together with my OPI Muppets collection order).

This is two coats which I painted the night before, without any topcoat at all.  The silver shimmers are so densely packed, the finish looks textured.  But it doesn't feel gritty when I touch the nail surface.   It is certainly something different from the usual creamy nudes in my stash.  The silver shimmers also give the beige shade an overall cool grey tone from a distance.

I have several other shimmery nudes in my stash, and these two came to my mind, so here's a quick comparison.  Nite Owl looks much darker compared to the other two --- both from Sephora by OPI colors I have for ages.

As you can see in my swatches, Nite Owl looks very much textured compared to the other two (which contains very fine shimmer bits).   It really isn't a case of which is prettier, but rather, up to one's own preference.  For me, I am glad Nite Owl is considered quite unique in my stash - no mean feat, considering the amount of nude polishes I own.

I have several more nail polish entries coming... and got to continue with my Deborah Lippmann swatch entries....

That's all, and thanks for looking!

Nails Story: DIY Half-Moon Manicure (Dita Von Teese inspired)

    Hi hi!

So Kimberley's (ladeekim) entry on her moon-manicure reminded me that I should try out this 'design' on my own finger nails!  I think I saw it on Samantha's hands too in SATC2.  Hers (Sam's) was a gold base with red tips.  I did a little online research, and the most 'famous' example of this half-moon manicure comes from Dita Von Teese (Click here for the inspiration picture and how-to article).  The half-moon manicure is also known as a reverse french manicure which was popular in the 1920s and 1930s.  It figures that Dita Von Teese would be rocking this design on her hands!  :)

Here are some pictures which I found:

Really like this one!! And so perfectly painted!!

And these are the products I used in my DIY manicure:

Base Coat - Nail Tek II, Chanel's Silver (LE), OPI Malaga Wine, and Orly's SecN Dry Topcoat

You really want each color to dry before apply the topcoat.

    • Apply base coat.
    • Apply one coat of silver -- a small patch at the base would be sufficient.
    • I got the help of my bro -- an extra pair of hands would come in handy -- use a sharp pointed tip to gentle carve out the silver base, drawing a semi-circle line to guide you when you paint the red polish.  I have no problems with the painting, but it is getting the lines even that is a challenge for me.
    • Apply two coats of the red polish.
    • Wait for everything to dry before top coat, or else you risk the colors bleeding into each other.
    • Apply thick layer of top coat to seal the colors, and make them look 'seamless' and smooth.

    The results:

    my left hand

    my right hand

That's all and thanks for looking!!

Haul! Nail Polish: OPI, Essie, China Glaze, Orly

This is a haul entry with 2 batches of batches of nail polish which I ordered from Gwen and Michelle's spree organiser.  Big Thanks to both girls for being super FAB & Efficient organisers!!

The nail polish are mainly from the Essie Resort Collection, and the OPI Shrek Forever Collection.   Lotsa cool greens and blues in this entry!!
I also got a couple of colors which I always wanted, such as White Out & Recycle.  And also a couple which are re-purchases ---- yup, it is hard to believe but some colors I actually finish using and love it so much I have to buy them again.  Examples: Malanga Wine (prolly  my first OPI  color), Bare it in Trafalgar Square (4th bottle), Sand in my Suit (sis's fave manicure color).  I also got a couple of bottles for my gf which are not pictured here.

From the OPI Shrek Forver Collection: (of which you have seen Funky Dunkey a few entries back HERE)

I did not get the light purple and the darker blue, because I thought I have something similar in my collection already.  I was debating whether to get Fiercely Fiona, but decided that for collection's sake, I need Fiona to pair with Shrek!  Yup.  The sucker that I am.

Next, from the Essie Resort collection:

I did not get Splash of Grenadine (a magenta color) because I think I will wear these greens and blues more often.

And the randoms.  I have always wanted to get Recycle since last year, but somehow never ordered.  It is darker than On the Prowl from MAC's Hello Kitty collection which I have, and also less blueish grey from YSL's Stormy Grey.  I like grey nails too!

And Amy told me that White Out is not the opaque liquid paper thick white color, she said not even 10 coats will make it stark white .  She did say that I might use it as a 'base' for when I use paler shades. SIGH.  I thought I can apply a stark white color and paste my black stickers on top for a Ben & Jerry nail look.

    And a few more randoms:

And as I am doing this post, I realised there are dupes within this haul and also from my current stash.  DUH DUH DUH.  It is a sure sign that I have way too much. I must try these 3 colors out and compare them when the lighting is better (over the weekend, on Sat morning, which is when I usually do my nail dupes entries).  And right now, I can't wait to rock Who the Shrek are you, and also paint Fiercely Fiona on alternate fingers.  I am going to watch it this weekend in 3D with the sibs.  Who else is also catching this show?

That's all and thanks for looking!

    Nails Story: The Purple Bandwagon~

After seeing Amy's and Chantana's purple nails entry, I am inspired to do one too. I tend to like the very grey  cool toned purples.. if that makes sense... and steer away from the red plum tones of purple.

On the fingers: OPI A Grape Fit!

On the toes: Orly's Charged Up

Colors show up more blue in pictures... in real life they have more violet tones.

Nail Colour of the Day: Purples

OK, SORRY SORRY SORRY for showing such a 'in your face' picture of my foot.

On my toes: Orly Charge Up - electric purple, though it looks blu-ish here.

Nails: OPI Do you Lilac it?  - pale electric purple

These I got from my latest nail haul, if you missed it, click here.

    Thanks for looking!
