About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Lancôme Vernis in Love: Jolis Matins [Photos & Swatches]

    Hi hi!

Good morning!  Hope everyone is enjoying this Mother's Day Sunday.  :)

Today, I have the upcoming Lancôme Vernis in Love - Jolis Matins shades to share with you.  These polishes retail for S$30 each, and contains 6ml of product.

These shades are the 'In Love with Morning' shades - very fresh, classic and wearable.
I love the brushes on these polishes - they are paddle shaped, like the YSL and Loreal polishes.

The formula and consistency of these polishes are quite impressive.  The color payoff is very intense, and application is a breeze, thanks to the brushes.  I didn't have any problem with visible brushstrokes and streakiness.

Just a close up of the brush - and how it is able to cover my nail in one stroke.

    and now for the swatches:

All swatches are taken with a base coat, two coats of color, and a top coat.
(except for 010M Cristal Quartz, which is shown on its own)

    010 M Cristal Quartz
just a clear polish to give your nails a shine
    020M Pure Narisse
A sheer cream shade, perfect for a french manicure, or just to give your nails a groomed chic effect
Bonus: this is not streaky at all despite the sheerness.  Application is a breeze.

    311M Jolie Rosalie
    A creamy warm pink.
Perfect summer shade, great if you want to show off the healthy tan.
The formula is extremely smooth and creamy.

    300M
    Rose Plumetis
A rosy light pink with a subtle sheen.  It is very opaque and creamy.

    105M Corail in Love
A true coral which is not too orangey - salmon pink.
It is showing up a little muted here, but it's slightly brighter in real life.

    154M  Miss Coquelicot
A classic bright red, neutral undertone that suit all skintones.

and lastly, we have 179M Madame Tulipe
a rich deep red, with a cooler undertone.  I love this shade.

a comparison of both the reds

My top picks among the Jolis Matins:

    311M Jolie Rosalie
    154M  Miss Coquelicot
    179M Madame Tulipe

Hope these swatches have been helpful, and thanks for looking!

Lancôme Vernis in Love: Tonight Is My Night [Photos & Swatches]

    Hi hi!

Today, I have the upcoming Lancôme Vernis in Love - Tonight in my Night shades to share with you.  These polishes retail for S$30 each, and contains 6ml of product, available this coming June 2013.

These shades are the 'In Love with Night' shades - think of deep intense hues, party ready colors.

    240N Beige Dentelle
A tanned beige shade, this is darker and warmer than my usual choice of nudes,
but if you want a natural shade, this is a very wearable office appropriate color.

    270N Chocolat Mordore
A rich chocolate brown, as suggested by the name.  Super intense and creamy.

    280N Cosmopolitan Kaki
A milky light cool toned brown.

    407N Gris Angora
A gorgeous cool toned grey with the slightest lilac tinge.
    Very creamy.

    441N Midnight Rose
    A plummy rich purple.

    473N Rouge Reglisse
This is rouge noir, a blackened red.
I didn't wait for my two coats to be dry, hence the slight patchiness.
But other than that, the formula and glossy finish are impressive.

    585N Noir Caviar
    Deep charcoal grey.
I love dark greys like this.  (think NARS Galion, DL Stormy Weather)

I love the colors in this group, they are neutral enough for everyday and yet so intense.

    My top picks:

    407N Gris Angora
    280N Cosmopolitan Kaki
    473N Rouge Reglisse

Which of these are your faves?

Hope you find these swatches helpful, and thank you for looking!

Lancôme Vernis in Love: Boudoir Time [Photos & Swatches]

    Hi hi!

Today, I have the upcoming Lancôme Vernis in Love - Boudoir Time shades to share with you.  These polishes retail for S$30 each, and contains 6ml of product.

These shades are the 'In Love with Evening' shades - very elegant with an edge, in this group, you find classics like Rouge in Love, and also the bolder shades of blues and purples.

Close up of the brush and application:

    112B Rouge In Love
A bright pinky red, that's showing up quite coral-ish in my swatches.

    343B Rose Pitimini
A deep creamy rose shade, it is showing less pink in my pictures.

    375B Rose Boudoir
A rich intense purple-y fuschia pink.

    419B Violette Coquette
A muted not quite pastel purple, slightly grey undertone.

    501B Aquamarine
An intense bright turquoise.  It is showing up quite bright blue in my pictures.
It has a deeper hue in real life too.  This is one of the very outstanding shades in the entire Vernis in Love collection.

    573B Bleu de Flore
    A deep navy warm blue.
I love this one. It's very inky and chic.

My top picks for the Boudoir Time:

    501B Aquamarine
    375B Rose Boudoir
    112B Rouge In Love

Which of these caught your eyes?

Hope these swatches have been helpful, and thank you for looking!

YSL Tie & Dye Pearly Coloured Top Coat: 02 Pop Coat

Inspired by the Couture Tie & Dye, YSL nail lacquer plays colour in gradation effect just like a sophisticated total look. The coloured base is covered by a "pop coat" for a sugary glossy result. Top Coat can also  be used alone for a “sheer” glittery result on the nails.

I have here 02 POP COAT to show you.  There are four shades released in this range, available (or not, seeing as quantities are super limited, everything might have been sold out since this entry is up) - a blue, purple, lighter pink and this darker pink.

The ultra fine shimmer in this top coat is beautiful.  It is very pearly, with just the slightest touch of golden.  I applied two coats over Illamasqua Pink Raindrops to give it a more interesting pink pearly pop.

    Swatches here:

And one more over Illamasqua Cameo:

If you like this beautiful chic glow to your manicured nails...you need to check out the rest of the shades.

Hope this entry has been helpful.  Thanks for reading!

Laura Mercier Lavender Cloud Nail Lacquer

    Hi hi!

This entry features Laura Mercier's Lavender Cloud which is released with their previous summer (2012) collection.  It is a beautiful milky pastel lavender shade.  The formula is very creamy and smooth, and I applied two coats here for full intensity.   I think we need more Laura Mercier polishes to be available here.  (this was purchased in Taiwan) My gf has loaned this to me to play with and try out.

While it's really pretty, it is not entirely unique, and you can find lots of Essie & OPI dupes.  :)

Hope this is helpful, and thanks for looking!

BeautyAsia 2013 Haul: Four ORLY nailpolishes

    Hi hi!

Sometime back, I went to the Beauty Asia Fair 2013 with Sarah... we checked out the annual beauty fair, and I was most looking forward to getting myself some Hakuhodo brushes..but when I realised that they were not for actual retail sale (the brand is looking for local retailers) I was like...what's there to get?

Well, I got some random nail supplies (base coats & seche vite, not that I need them, but it is nice to have endless supply of backups..haha), hair mask, and these Orly polishes.  I have vaguely heard of these colors, but never really got into buying them.  When I saw how gorgeous the glitter effects are, I just allowed myself to grab a few.

They didn't swatch very well, partly I was a little impatient, and they turned out quite gunky.....but here we go:

Sunglasses at Night - holographic glitter strips... I love how they really catch the light, and just shine very mysteriously in the sheer jelly black base.  I think this is best applied over a black base as shown.  The base formula is on the thick side, so I was torn trying to get as many of the strips out, and not to lay on too thick a layer...and the same goes for the other two glitter shades...

Can't be Tamed - purple glitter packed with lots of smaller silver and maybe black glitter bits.
Ultraviolet - like the name states... this is chocfull with glitter bits and applies the most easily and evenly among the 3 glitter polishes.

    Quick swatches over black:

And lastly, we have Orly Rage - a pale rose gold that's a hot fave among many.  The formula is impressive, you can get away with one even coat, but I applied two coats here for maximum impact.  It's realy gorgeous.

That's all I have for this entry.

    Thanks for looking!

Dior Vernis 307 Nymphea [featuring Dior Gel Coat]

    Hi hi

A couple of weeks back, I purchased the new Dior Nymphea nail polish (which is released as part of the new DiorSnow collection) there are two other polishes in this collection (a shimmery sheer white and a baby pink).  The pale blue green immediately attracted me, and I know I had to have it.

Nymphea has a smooth glossy finish, and I applied 3 thin coats here for maximum opaque - you can see slight bald spots with 2 coats, fyi.

I also applied the new upcoming Dior Gel Coat in this set of swatches - it is very glossy, and gives a glassy (yes, glassy) finish to the nail polish.  The dry time is about 10 minutes before they feel 'dry' to the touch.

Overall, if you like mint/ pale jade color, do check out Nymphea.  I had thought that it will be so similar to other similar shades in my stash, but comparing Nymphea to two other 'famous' blue-green, you can see that they aren't the same at all.

Nymphea might be a softer (less stark) version of Essie Mint Candy Apple (which I also have, but didn't swatch side by side).

    Swatches -

Comparisons - Chanel Nouvelle Vague is darker, and more green.

Dior Saint Tropez is darker, and more blue...

Hope this has been helpful, and thank you for looking!

Essie No More Film [Photos & Swatches]

    Hi!

I am currently in love with Essie's No More Film - it is part of their Resort 2012 collection, I had passed on it when it came out ( I bought Sure Shot instead) ...but when I chanced upon this beautiful deep inky purple shade at a smoochiezz bazaar at Harborfront.... I just couldn't resist.

The formula is creamy, and opaque in one coat.  I painted two coats just so that it will look more 'smooth' in terms of the surface.  It is super glossy - no topcoat used here.

I am wearing this shade on my toes now.  Loves!

    Thanks for looking!

YSL Spring Look 2013: La Laque Couture 34 Jade Imperial

    Hi hi,

in this entry, we have the highly sought after YSL Jade Imperial - yes, by the time I got to purchasing this shade, it was already sold out, I had the YSL staff at Tangs orchard reserved it for me.
It is a muted jade green....Whenever you have mint, teal, jade in all sorts of shades, people seem to go crazy for it.  Remember Chanel's Jade? Nouvelle Vague? Dior Saint Tropez...and in the mass market, China Glaze For Audrey?  Essie Mint Candy Apple?  Indeed, it is so easy to name a list of iconic 'mint' shades.

I am glad to have this in my collection.

The formula is amazing, creamy and opaque in two coats.  It is very smooth and easy to apply.  It dries a little darker..but otherwise, pretty true to the color in the bottle.
I had this color painted at the nail salon yesterday, but the woman did such a bad job, I had to do it myself this morning.

    Swatches -

and a quick comparison, someone on my instagram asked if this is similar to OPI Mermaid's Tears... so here we go.  Both have that muted almost  greyish factor, but Mermaid's Tears is paler while YSL Imperial Jade has a richer tone.

Other mints in my collection are all too blue, so I didn't compare them here.

Hope this has been helpful and thanks for looking!

Chanel Hong Kong Collection: Eastern Light & Western Light Vernis

Sooooo excited to get my hands on the Chanel Hong Kong collection, thanks to my lovely fellow Instagrammer, oddinary (she is from Hong Kong and blogs here, check it out!).  She managed to get me a set of the nail polishes, and sent them over to Singapore so quickly!  Thanks girl!!
This collection is launched to commemorate the opening of the largest Chanel boutique in Hong Kong in Hysan Place (in Causeway Bay - it is HUGE and LUXE, the Apple store there is epic too).  So yes, in 2013, Chanel chooses Hysan Place, the new luxury temple ideally located at the centre of the island for its biggest boutique in Hong Kong.  To celebrate the event, the CHANEL makeup creation studio has developed an exclusive collection in which universal gold unites extremes of deep brown and brilliant white.

Like the shimmering light on the waters of the delta, the PEARL RIVER palette reveals an original combination of five shadows embossed with the iconic quilted motif of CHANEL.  Two contrasting nail colors echo the extremes of the eye palette.  Elegant and modern, Eastern Light is a luminous, very opqaue white enamel.  Deep and intense Western Light is a chocolate brown glowing with a pearly red heart.

I am pretty sure this collection might quietly make its way to Singapore, just like how last year's Vegas collection (to celebrate the opening of the CHANEL Boutique in Bellagio) was also released in the CHANEL flagship stores here.  While it was easy for me to pass on golds, I could pass on this set of striking pair of colors - I know they are not unique, but hello..... it's Hong Kong, one of my fave cities in the world - its literally my second home as far as travel places go!

    Product close ups:

Eastern Light - a pure creamy white.  It leans a little cool.  Formula is opaque and not too thick.  Two coats give a smooth even glossy finish.  It looks almost blinding white.  Beautiful

    Pardon my rather untidy painting...

And Western Light - as always Chanel shimmer polishes are very subtle, while it may glisten in the bottle, on the nails itself... it is not so shimmery.  It is a 2 coater, very blacken chocolate - I could barely detect the 'red heart' as stated in the description, though you can see the beautiful shimmer effect in the picture below.

It is very smooth and glossy.

I pulled out a few Chanel dark shades for comparisons.  The Beauty Look Book has an excellent comparison entry of Western Light.

    These 3 look very similar:

    And here they are:

Western Light is the closest to Strong (also limited edition) - but Strong is a one coater.

Vertigo has a soft grey tinge which is not in the other two.

Hope this entry has been helpful, and thank you for reading!
