About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

No ads, no paid links etc please.  I am in charge of all content and pictures here.

I am not a makeup artist, nor do I have any professional training in makeup.

Lancome Midnight Roses for Fall 2012: L Absolu Mat Cashmere 300 [Photos & Swatches]

L Absolu Mat Cashmere 300 (S$40) is a beautiful purple-y red that settles in matte on your lips.  A velvety smooth intense rich plummy red perfect for this fall season.  This is released as part of Lancome's Midnight Roses for the fall season... and one of my top picks from the collection.  It is a shade that suits a range of skintones, as proven when Joey, Mag and I all tried it out on the spot during our preview session.

It is very flattering because it is not super shiny glossy, the shape of the applicator makes it easy for a precise application.  One coat of this lippy gives you true intense color.   The shade of plummy red is not too dark, and yet is not a bright red shade.

I really love this shade, and I can see myself wearing it for a very chic and clean look, very feminine too.

    It is GORGEOUS, right?

Even without much on the rest of my face, I think the shade doesn't look clownish at all, it just brightens my skintone, and really just look brilliant.

I highly recommend this shade, if you have to pick something from the Lancome Fall 2012 makeup collection.

On the rest of my face, mostly Lancome products:

Pro Base, Teint Miracle Foundation & Loose Powder

Blush Subtil Palette 126 Nectar Lace*

    Blush Highlighter 001*

*to be featured in subsequent entries*

Hope you find the swatches & pictures helpful, and thank you for reading!

    Happy Friday!

Lancome Midnight Roses for Fall 2012: Three L'Abosolu Nu Lipsticks [Photos & Swatches]

Lancôme's Midnight Roses Fall Makeup collection features a trio of 3 limited edition L'Absolu Nu (S$44 each), in shades of pink, to rose and a deep plum that is sure to catch your fancy whether you prefer a subtle wash of color or a deep touch of plum on your lips for this fall season.  I had the chance to preview the collectio, and more.. and so in this entry I will be featuring the 3 lipsticks.  They are all beautiful, the texture is so moisturising, you don't feel like you are wearing anything on your lips.  The colors are rich without being too intense.  The lipsticks also glide onto my lips easily, and two swipes across the lips gives true color payoff (but slightly see through).

Inspired by Tresor Midnight Rose and the majestic hue of purple, Midnight Roses--Lancome's Fall 2012 Color Collection--evokes mischievous femininity and glamour.

Lips are replenished, feel softer, and moisturized: Pro-Xylane™ restores moisture to the lips for up to 8 hours

Let's take a closer look at the swatches.

I love that they all compliment my skintone very well, and I feel like I don't need much else on the face/ eyess.

First we have Soie De Lilas, a pale cool toned almost lilac-y pink.

I thought it would be hard to pull off, but after looking at the whole face, it all comes together.

Next, we have Rose Damas, a rosy my lips but better shade.

It is the most wearable among the three colors, and will suit most skintones.

and finally, we have the most dramatic among them, Prune Resille, a deep reddish plum shade.

For me, this is quite a skin brightening shade, and easy to wear, due to the sheer-ish finish.

If you are curious on what else is on my face, here is a list - mainly Lancôme products, of course.

Lancôme pro base, Lancôme Teint Miracle, Lancôme Loose Powder

Lancôme Blush Subtil Palette 126 (Nectar Lace)*

    Lancôme Blush Highlighter*

*to be featured in subsequent entries*

Do check out these lippies next time you drop by a Lancôme counter!

Hope these pictures and swatches have been helpful.

    Thank you for reading!

MAQuillAGE SS2012 True Series Collection: My Top Picks [Photos & Swatches]

[Kumiko Goto for MAQuillAGE SS2102 Makeup Collection]

In 2012, MAQuillAGE is taking a new step towards true beauty.  It aims to draw out our natural beauty and expressiveness - the true beauty of our facial expressions, the way we really feel.  Each part of our face tells a story.  Feminine, lustrous and full lips. Strong-willed, defined big eyes. Dewy refined skin that glows with happiness.

Now it's time to be yourself.  Make everyday a new day.

[Emi Takei for MAQuillAGE SS2012 Makeup Collection]

I will feature the eyeshadow palettes and new lipsticks that are released with this collection, and also showcase a few items I have picked which reflect my 'true' self.

    The True Rouge

Glamorous shine and color, rich moisture, with a true lasting finish. When they become all in one, it makes the ultimate, truly ideal rouge.

Gives true beauty to your lips. Welcome to the new world of lipstick.

    12 shades, Permanent.

Vivid color technology which blends perfectly over eyelids, with an innovative applicator that creates the ideal eye shape.

Now any color can become your "flattering color". Captivating, beautiful eyes are all yours.

    4 shades, Limited Edition.

    ******************

My Top Picks from this collection - I chose the colors after my makeup featuring the new products from the collection.

I was treated to the Shiseido White Lucent facial - very relaxing and my face looked fresher after the 45 min session.

It was part of the annual Shiseido White Day which was on the 14 March 2012.

    Makeover in progress.

Love how the MUA did my brows (not pictured),

and how she managed to 'fake' my flawless complexion using only powder foundation and concealer!

The array of the TRUE ROUGE colours!

She lined my lips with a pencil, before using a lip brush to apply my choice of color.

I was in a rush after the makeover, so I didn't take any final results.

I picked two lipsticks & one eyeshadow palette.

I think I was subconciously going for the TRUE NATURAL look exemplified by Kumiko Goto shown in the first picture.

The palette is housed in a sleek black casing.

and the palette swatched in the same order on my hand, using the sponge tip applicator

quite intensely pigmented with fine glitter bits (no primer used)

and the lipsticks -- my fave!  MAQuillAGE consistently releases all these luxuriously glossy and smooth lipsticks, it's hard to pick my faves, but I managed to select two which I would wear all the time. All the 12 shades are very natural in tone (as opposed to the trendy bright shades you would find in the Shiseido range)

applied straight from the tube - it looks matte but glides on amazingly...

and it is so weightless, and creamy, and I love this shade!

it looks like my lips but better, yet you could see there is color on my lips, and you can see just how glossy, and 'wet' the lipstick looks

I will be doing a proper LOTD featuring all these products soon.  Stay tuned!

Hope this has been helpful, and thanks for looking!

Makeup Storage, Organisation, Set-Up [Feb 2012]

    Hi hi,

This is an updated makeup organisation & set-up entry.  The last time I did one was back in Jan 2011 when I had a major room re-vamp - link here, if you are interested.  I won't be showing you exactly what's in my stash, but just trying to share how I store everything, and how I TRY to keep things organised, because everything can get kind of overwhelming, and also share how my blogging set up looks like, in case you are also keen to see what goes behind the scene here.

Most of what you see here are stuff from IKEA & Muji.  I shall try to insert relevant links to past entries where I might have talked about a particular item of storage.

I share my room with my sis, we sleep in the same room, but the bulk of her clothes and stuff are still in her old bedroom.  I am also not showing my hair products and tools storage because that's in another corner of the room next to my PAX wardrobe, and it isn't very exciting anyway.

To prevent any rambling, I have divided this area of my room into sections A - E. Here you see the overall of where everything is, if you stand near the door to my bedroom.  I try to keep things to something white...because my room is TINY.... and white looks neater and cleaner.  I also try not to keep things out in the open, because you can see there is a large window by the desk, and stuff gets DUSTY all the time.  So keeping my stash in drawers is important to me.

You can see my labels for each section what its for... and I will show you close ups.

    Sections A and B

A: a tall bookcase [Ikea, Billy?] is quite old, and 4 of the 6 adjustable shelves contain beauty related items.

B: my new ALEX with 9 drawers [S$239] which replaces my two HELMERS.  Holds most of my makeup collection.

    Close up of Section A

Perfume Collection, Various units for false lashes, contact lenses, nail supplies, accessories (necklaces, rings etc)

    Close up of Section B

Right on top of my ALEX is a cupcake/ food serving tray.  Got this at IKEA for S$19.  This is great for storing and displaying any pretty items you want.  I try to keep the top part of this ALEX clean and free of anything else except for this serving tray.  I sometimes stand here with a mirror to do my makeup in the morning.

close up of the 9 drawers

p/s many YT gurus also have the same ALEX drawers (nikkietutorials, misschievious, etc)

My sister helped to drive home this unit and my bro & dad assembled the thing...

all I had to do was to give my sister a call to buy this for me when she was at IKEA last week.

I like how 'sturdy' the drawers feel when you full them in and out.   Some of the drawers are still messy, in terms of what I want to fit in, and what goes where... but this one ALEX saves more floor space than two HELMERS - which were already bursting with too much items.

    The first four drawers

    Next 5 drawers

Next to my ALEX, on the floor is a temporary stash of new products which I bought or were given but yet to take photos of, I leave them in the bags and boxes so they don't get lost in my stash or get used before I take good photos of them.  Ideally once I have no 'outstanding' stuff to feature this area should be empty, and everything put away nicely.

    AREA C

AREA D:  WORK AREA & BLOGGING SET UP

This is my main workstation, my younger shares the other end of this long desk, another ALEX piece, hence the matching drawers.  The ALEX drawers here contain more new products, and two drawers contain personal non beauty items.  You can see the MUJI drawers here, which I don't like..... because I feel like they should belong somewhere else and not taking up space on my table.

MUJI CLEAR Acrylic & Plastic drawers - link here

MUJI Storage & Mirror - link here

I also have a IKEA table lamp which Jerlaine gave me, I used white daylight bulbs to take pictures if I have to, at night... but other than that, I take blog pictures almost only in the day time, as you can see I have the big window in front of me, and I prefer to take blog pictures under natural lighting.

The makeup brushes you see there in the cup are meant to go for washing soon.  My laptop usually sits there, or on my bed.  I have a DYSON blade-less fan which I put on my desk.   Some shades, and contact lenses which are my daily essentials.   When it gets too bright, I usually leave the blinds down.   The two existing HELMERS have now been separated, one at each side of the desk.  My sister uses one for her art supplies, and I use my remaining one for nail polish storage.

Close up of the MUJI drawers area - I am trying to find an ideal place to fit them, cos I think they clutter up my desk.

    Inside of the MUJI drawers

I leave a clean dry towel on top of my clear acrylic drawer to prevent dust and it also serves as a drying area when I wash my makeup brushes

This is the top view of my desk area.

I use my MacBookPro and Adobe Photoshop CS-5 to edit & re-size blog pictures.

When taking blog pictures, I either lay out my stuff on the floor, or table whichever is more spacious for what I am about to do.

I buy two pieces of large art paper, in an ivory and black color.  They form the background of my blog pictures.  Personally I don't like distracting prints and images for my blog pictures, so I always use a plain neutral background.  I can use my desk, but sometimes when it gets messy, I just put the paper on top of the mess, and hello, clean background instantly.  Heheheh.  Lazy tip and trick there for you.  :)

The papers are quite big, so I fold them in half for my purposes.  This is how a 'photo-shoot' might look like...

    on a black background

and the usual ivory background you see in so many entries

    AREA E

Close up of the nail polish storage, I like that I can pull out the whole HELMER unit

Four of the six drawers contain nail polish.   The other two are nail wheels and misc stuff, and my own personal stuff.

I think it is good to invest in permanment fixtures like these actual shelves and drawers, and if I were to have my own place, I would prolly ask the interior designer to do a built in something something to my own preferences... but for now... I think this works.

I also cleared out quite a bit of stuff which are old and outdated when I moved my Helmers to the ALEX... so these are stuff which I can still use. Again, I have mentioned before... makeup & beauty is my (passionate) hobby it is almost like a full time occupation here, so I do spend time & money trying to make everything all proper and good.

Hmmmm, I think I am done here... do let me know if you spot something interesting which I didn't explain or talk about, leave any questions in the comments below!

Also, just want to say thanks to everyone (so many of you!) who pointed out the Yahoo 'feature' thing, seriously, don't know where that came from...and I was totally unaware, and caught very very very much by surprise.

Let's end this entry with a very girly frilly picture of my cupcake tray display which I have posted on instagram last week!

Have a great weekend, and thanks for looking!

    Chanel Fall 2011 Makeup Craves

Everything in this collection is suckering me in.

Most of all, the Illusion d’Ombre - which are not permanent, apparently.

    Says Peter Philips:

Épatant, a gunmetal shade from his new-for-autumn Illusion d’Ombre cream eye shadow collection, which he mixed with two of the range’s other shimmering shades in white and black to create the focal point of the look. “They come with an applicator, but I prefer to use my finger,” Philips said of the mousse-y pigments, which can go on thick for opacity or sheered out for transparency. “You can actually use it as an eyeliner, too,” he pointed out—dipping an angled brush into the sparkling onyx pot and scrawling it across the upper lash line. A similar smudged line was drawn using Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof Eyeliner in Ébène below the lower lash line before Philips whipped on a few coats of its Inimitable Waterproof mascara in Noir.

    Product information:

[only including the ones I know I will definitely be purchasing]

Eyes: Illusion d’Ombre in Epatant, Mirifique, and Fantasme

Nails: Le Vernis Nail Colour in Graphite

    [available July/ August 2011]
