About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

No ads, no paid links etc please.  I am in charge of all content and pictures here.

I am not a makeup artist, nor do I have any professional training in makeup.

Lancôme x Alber Elbaz: A Makeup Fashion Show

ALBER ELBAZ is collaborating with Lancôme on his first make-up collection. The Lanvin creative director's first foray into cosmetics will be revealed worldwide on June 15.

"Alber Elbaz is, without a doubt, one of the world's most influential fashion designers. But beyond that, he is also the most talented," said Youcef S. Nabi, Lancôme president, in a statement. "His sense of luxury, his vision of femininity and that hint of audacity resonate perfectly with the new values of the Maison Lancôme. We are extremely proud and happy that, with us, he is set to channel his universe into the world of make-up for the very first time."

I had  the chance to preview the entire collection last week, and was totally wowed by the colors, the illustrations and just the whole overall aesthetic appeal of everything.  I have already swatched some of these items, and will be sharing with you in the coming weeks to come, including LOTDs, and more.

But now, let's watch the video, and enjoy snapshots of this pop-up book of illustrations:

How gorgeous is the packaging!  :)

Hope this is helpful, and get shopping!

The collection will be revealed in MID JUNE at SEPHORA, I won't be in town during that time, but be sure to check this out!

    Thanks for reading!

The Body Shop Colour Crush Eyeshadows [Photos & Swatches]

    Hi hi!

The Body Shop will be launching (21 March 2013 ) a brand new range of single eyeshadows - called the Colour Crush Eyeshadows.  The range consists of a fashion-forward palette of 30 mono eyeshadows in a full array of the season's must have stand out shades.  Beautifully wearable, the lust worthy line-up ranges from elegant beiges, to shocking brights in a mix of pearly and matte finishes.  Incredibly blendable and buildable, these intense shades can be applied wet or dry and worn alone, together or layered, creating a myriad of looks from daytime chic to full-on night-time glamour.

The mono eyeshadows come in a clear recyclable packaging, which gives a better view of the rich, impactful colour inside.

Each of these eyeshadows will retail for S$19.90 each.

The high-impact Color Crush eyeshadows are made with crushed pigments in Italy, the fashion colour capital of the world.  HIgh quality pigments are coated with a silky blend of Community Fair Trade oils, creating optimal light reflection to bring out all their brilliance and clarity.  The super-smooth and silky, luminous colour glides on, melting and fusing seamlessly with skin to reveal a vibrant intensity.  Take your eye-look to the next level.

100% Cruelty Free - these are vegetarian, and 100% cruelty free - these shadows do not contain any bug shell extract to colour the product, any shimmer effect is made from mineral mica and the binding agents are made from vegetable materials instead of crushed shellfish.

The Colour Crush eyeshadows benefit from a blend of Community Fair Trade Brazil nut oil, marula oil, honey, organic coconut oil and sesame oil.  The community fair trade Brazil nut oil comes from the Candela co-op in Peru.  The 'castaneros' or nut gatherers collect the broken nuts that can't be sold for food use and hand-crack them to extract the oil.  Trade has helped to protect 3000 hectares of rainforest in the Madre de Dios region.  Sustainable harvesting also helps to support the indigenous species that depend on the Brazil nut tree, such as the orchid bee.

Here's a close up of each of the eyeshadow single:

I have 16 eyeshadows here to feature, and I will swatch them by colour groups.   I will also do several LOTDs hopefully, featuring these eyeshadows in upcoming blog entries. (closer to end of March, I think, just before they are launched in stores)

    Color descriptions are my own.

First, my FAVE - the neutrals and metallics - and I think they have the best quality too.  Each of these eyeshadows, whether they are matte or have a pearlised finish - are incredibly smooth and intense.

110 - Sand by Me: a creamy matte bone shade
220 - Chocolate Linger: a matte medium ashy brown
215 - Coconuts about You: a matte deep brown

201 Melt my Heart: shimmering peachy golden brown
    210 Bronze Bliss: shimmering bronze
225 Brownie & Clyde: pearl taupey deep brown

And the blues - cool toned shades.  I find that this color group doesn't seem as pigmented as the previous group of colors, but that's not to say that they are sheer, but I would personally use them with a colored base, if you want a very intense look.

001 Sugar Gaze - very cool toned white with a pearly sheen
005 Steel my Heart - shimmery light grey
501 Head in the Sky - pale matte periwinkle

515 Blue over You - shimmering navy blue
415 Midnight Flirt - pearl finish, greyish purple

The bold and brights - the payoff varies, I had the most disappointing result with 301 Pink Crush, but all the rest are very creamy and pigmented.

301 Pink Crush - pale shimmering pink
305 Berry Cute - shimmering medium pink
310 Berry Cheeky - vibrant pink satin finish

101 Golden Girl -pearly finish, blonde gold
605 Sweet Pea - pale green, with a slight gold sheen

I will be doing LOTDs with these eyeshadows soon.  Stay tuned!  If you are looking for reasonably priced eyeshadows, you definitely want to check out these new Colour Crush eyeshadows from The Body Shop.  I personally think that they are very basic in terms of the colors - I mean, they don't have those complex multi-dimensional shimmer or glitter, but in terms of the quality, most of them which are comparable to some eyeshadows which are way more expensive.

Hope these swatches have been helpful, and thank you for reading!

NARS SS2013 Collection [Photos & Information]

I realise this entry is a little belated, but I want to share the beautiful images and swatches of most of the products released in this collection anyway. They are all already available at Tangs Orchard, so do check them out soon!

The Spring 2013 Collection shines with rich, hyper-saturated shades, welcoming the season with a dramatically modern palette.  Jewel-toned cheeks pop.  Lips sparkle in soft metallic rose or pout in sultry shimmering fuchsia.  Nails shimmer in iridescent silver green.  Eyes flash in pink or flirt in blue and green.  The collection is an ode to bold color and a modern woman - and as always, purely NARS.

Stella Tennat fronts the campaign image, which is shot by Francois Nars himself, is described by NARS as having a unique look, short hair, angular features - that really defines the 90s era.  Her look is unapologetically strong yet feminine which really represents the NARS makeup.   NARS' favourite products of this collection includes Dressed to Kill lipstick, and the Bouthan palette.

    BOUTHAN EYESHADOW DUO

With the French name for Bhutan, the South Asian country wedged between China and India at the eastern end the Himalayans, this Duo Eyeshadow features a soft pink tulie and a bright pink with gold shimmer shade that can be applied wet or dry, alone or layered.

    DRESSED TO KILL LIPSTICK

This fuchsia rose Lipstick with gold shimmer is as dengerously seductive as the 1980 erotic crime thriller, written and directed by Brian de Palma, for which it's named.

    MAD MAD WORLD EYESHADOW DUO

This vivid cyan and parakeet green Duo Eyeshadow is as wildly colorful as its namesake 1963 American comedy film.  Wear each bold shade solo or use one as a base and the other as a liner or accent - the combination is eye-popping and unexpected.

    DISCO INFERNO NAIL POLISH

Burn baby nurn! Hitting the dance floor is a must in this iridesecent silver green nail polish, inspired by the Trammps 1976 song (and album of the same name).

    PERSIA SINGLE EYESHADOW

Named after the countery now known as Iran, this matte paprika colored Eyeshadow evokes the history and culture of the empire that Cyrus the Great founded in the sixth century. Apply dry for a softer look or wet for a strong effect.

    CYTHERE VELVET GLOSS LIP PENCIL

This irresistible soft metallic rose Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil is inspired by the Greek Aegean island located between the Peloponnese Peinsular and Crete that's believed to be the birthplace of Venus, the goddess of love.

    SEDUCTION BLUSH

This sexy sangria-hued Blush lends skin an alluring come-hither flush.

    CORCOVADO Soft Touch Shadow Pencil

This 24-karat Soft Touch Shadow Pencil gets its name from the mountain in central Rio de Janeiro that's famous the world over for the 125 foot statue of "Christ the Redeemer" atop its peak.  Use it as a base for layering with powder shadow, or as a liner or accent, or to enhance color intensity.

more information on the light reflecting power and concealers in subsequent entries coming this week.

If you have been following me on instagram you would have gotten more timely updates on the availabilty of the new products.  I believe by now the light reflecting powders are either low in stock or out of stock.

we were astounded by the intense colors and beautiful textures

I didn't manage to swatch Bhoutan for some reason, opps!  I will showcase a couple of items which I received and purchased from this collection soon.  Stay tuned.  I will most probably be posting the light reflecting powder and concealer as a informative & review entries hopefully by this weekend, but if you want my preliminary views, I am loving both so far!

Tarte 4-piece Amazonian Clay 12-hour blush set [Photos & Swatches]

    Hi hi

This entry features a little purchase I made at under-twenty20 (link link link)- it is a Singapore based website that sells several of the US brands which we don't get in Singapore, including Tarte, Sonia Kashuk, Covergirl...and lots more.  When I saw that she has in stock the Tarte 4 piece blush set (which was released late last year) it took me maybe 10 minutes of hesistation and then I just bought the set!  How cute is a set of 4 Tarte blushes, in new colors apart from their permanent range?  I have 2 Tarte blushes, and I love them, so I know that I am in for a good deal with this set.

The set retails for S$65 on her site (which is already OOS, not sure about re-stocking) - and each blush is half the weight of a full sized one (3.3g vs 5.6g).

Here are the colors - I have already used the two blushes for a couple of weeks, hence they don't look 'brand new'.  I think I used the highlight shade a couple of times.  I still am not sure how I want to use the shimmering tan shade yet.

    The color descriptions:

Size comparisions - it is smaller than the full sized ones, and doesn't come with a mirror.  Even though the pan is on the small side (it is about the size of those large special editions MAC eyeshadows if you are familar with those) I can easily pick up the product with my regular blush brushes, and even my kabuki brush.

    swatches:

I love both the blush shades - they are very smooth and pigmented, and quite long lasting.

    * edit, in the following pic, I labelled fantastic and magic wrongly. it should be the other way round. apologies! and thanks Eliza for being so sharp eyed and pointing out!

And a quick comparison to  the two other Tarte blushes I have in my stash:

Tipsy is very similar to Magic, perhaps it's more coral, less pink.

Hope these swatches have been helpful, and thank you for looking!

Clé de Peau Beauté SS2013: Enriched Lip Luminizer 221 Sweet Nougat [Photos & Swatches]

Overflowing with intense light and moisture, lips speak with dramatic allure.

3 limited edition released with Clé de Peau Beauté SS2013 makeup collection, the enriched lip luminizers are bathed in luxurious luster, and lips become fuller and more stunning with each use.  Inspired by the Meditterranean, these new shades are sumptuously textured and brilliantly radiant to spotlight your lips this season.

Click on the Clé de Peau Beauté website to see more information on their SS2013 collection.

and this video of the collection inspiration, fronted by Amanda Seyfried.

    (descriptions my own)

221 Sweet Nougat - natural rosy blush

222 Sugar Candy - natural peach

223 Raspberry Ripple - natural pink

Swatches I took of all three in store:

Packaging - the lip luminizers, refillable,  come in a separate casing/body, which you 'pop' the lipstick into.  They are not retractable though, so when you twist the product out, be sure to not to 'overtwist' - I find the click sounds very useful to gauge the amount needed, often for me 2 'clicks' are sufficient each use.

Swatches of 221 Sweet Nougat - it is a my lips by but better shade - I love the texture of the cle de peau lip luminizers, they are extremely creamy and luxurious to wear on your lips, so indulgent, and the sleek packaging just makes touching up a totally chic affair.

On my lips - it seems to look a little lighter, but it could be due to the artificial lighting - but you can see how soft and creamy the lipstick is.

    and overall, on the face

everything all I used are from cle de peau, complete makeup breakdown will be available in later entries.  Stay tuned!

The cle de peau lip luminizers retail for slightly over S$100 each, quite pricey in my opinion, however, if you want to splurge on a very luxe and quality lip product, you won't be disappointed with these.

Hope this is helpful, and thank you for reading!

Inspired by the Meditterranean, these new shades are sumptuously textured and brilliantly radiant to spotlight your lips this season.

and this video of the collection inspiration, fronted by Amanda Seyfried.
