About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Four Gorgeous Lancôme Rouge in Love [Swatches & LOTDs]

    Hi hi!

In this entry, I will be sharing with you four brand new shades extension to the existing Lancôme Rouge in Love collection.  These are just four out of the six shades which will be launched in June 2013.

The Rouge in Love lipsticks have a very creamy almost balm like formula, plus they deliver a soft touch of colour.  I won't say that they are intensely pigmented (note that these have a different formulation from the US Rouge in Love), but they are some of the most hydrating lipstick formula I have tried.  These lipsticks last on my lips for about 3 - 4 hours, and they apply very smoothly without looking too patchy.

Look at how shiny and creamy they look in the tubes:

And the four shades I have:

Lip swatches, followed by a LOTD for the overall feel of the lipstick.  More details on what I used on the rest of my face will be posted in a subsequent entry.   Everything used is Lancôme, and my top is from ASOS.

174B Crazy Tangerine looks bright red in the tube, but it is actually a very wearable warm red shade.  It's something I could easily slap on my lips without even looking into the mirror.  If you are scared of red lipsticks, but want to venture into wearing them, I recommend this.

232M is a nude shade with silvery shimmer, very fine, they are almost invisible, but the sheen is there.

It is a natural shade that goes well with a dramatic eye look.  I like how the sheen gives my lips some 3D dimension.

Next, is 345B, which is a candy pink shade.  This is super creamy and very wearable because of the sheerish payoff.

Goes well with a cool toned smokey eyelook.

Lastly, we have 357B a natural pinky shade, after the crazy Tangerine, this is my fave of the new shades.  It is my lips but pinker kind of color.

And an overall look.  It goes with any makeup look, in my opinion.

If you are looking into adding new lipsticks to your collection, be sure to check out these new shades some June 2013.

Hope this review and swatches have been helpful, and thank you for reading!

Maybelline Vivids Lipsticks in Vibrant Mandarin & Electric Orange [Photos & Swatches]

    Hi hi!

This is a special entry featuring the new Maybelline Vivids on my sister, Meryllyn.  She is really into bright lippies lately, especially the warm reds and oranges.  So I ordered a couple of the new Maybelline Vivids for her, seeing as they will be right up her alley.  Got these through Eliza who placed the order, so much thanks to her!  These two costs about S$18 after shipping, super great bargain.  Currently, she is loving my Estee Lauder Wild Fire and Shu Uemura orange lippy, and she wants to try out more.

The colors are just gorgeous and comparable to a lot of pricier lipsticks.

Here are two colors my sister picked:

And another product close up -

    Swatches on my hand -

They are very creamy, and pigmented.

Just a note - if you have naturally pigmented lips (like Meryl here), you should go for the very cream intense lipsticks so  they will show up true to color.  The sheer or anything very glossy shiny will not show up true to color on your lips because your own lip color will change the color of the lipstick itself.

    Electric Orange

is a vibrant orange, it is very wearable because it is not matte, and doesn't contain the stark white pigment in the formula (think of MAC Morange)

    overall look on Meryl
(a list of all products used will be listed below)

    Vibrant Mandarin
    A orangey red.
    This is gorgeous.

    and the overall look

What do you think of these colors on Meryl?  I think they will keep her happy for a long time!

    All products used:

Face - Ettusais BB Loose Powder, finished with Guerlain pressed meteorites  (how I envy her super smooth & poreless complexion!)

    Cheeks - NARS Gilda blush

    Eyes - Inglot eyeshadows

    Brows - Shu Uemura pencil

Liner - Heavy Rotation liquid liner

Hope this is useful, and thank you for reading!

MAQUiLLAGE: True Cheek Colour RD321, Essence Glamorous Rouge RS599 & RD396

    HI!

This entry features a few MAQUiLLAGE Spring Summer offerings - all are already available at Shiseido/ MAQUiLLAGE counters.  In particular, I really love the True Cheek Colour.  It is a blusher with a built-in brush that doesn't feel at all gimmicky.  The brush is made of the softest hair, and picked up enough product from the tube itself, and you can build up the color as you please.  (S$56 each, comes in 2 shades, a pink and a coral)

The packaging is just like a lipstick - which means you can throw in your handbag for touch ups on the go.  The brush is really soft and buffs the brush onto your cheeks very nicely indeed.  In fact you can double it up as a face powder, after applying your cheek color you can dip the brush into your face compact powder, and there you go - something really great for travelling.  I know this is definitely coming along with my on my next holiday.

You can customise the colour and finish you want by simply turning the dial and increasing the number of rotations.
The blush is also formulated with Shiseido’s first creamy fit coating formulation – which means every colorant and pearl particle is coated with creamy fit oil to make the powder adhere to the skin better, creating an even finish.

    And here's the application:

I picked the color RD321, which is a nice pop of peachy coral on the cheeks.  It is very finely milled, and super smooth.  Love the brush, and it is really a quality brush which works.

The blush is refillable (you just purchase the cap when you run out of the powder).

And next, we have six new shades of the Essence Glamorous Rouge - I have two here to show you.

The Essence Glamorous Rouge are some of my fave glosses.  They have great colour payoff, glossy and is  not sticky at all.  The shades are all variants of my lips but better colour...so when you feel like looking really groomed and natural, these are really great options.   The packaging is compact, and very pretty, right?

Beautiful lips created with a double coat of adherent Liquid Rouge and Light-collecting Gloss.
Apply the rouge first. Wait one minute to seal in the color.
Then coat on the gloss for long-wearing, feminine, full, resilient lips.

Lip swatches, and overall look on the face:

(please don't mind the messy hair and tiny eyes...focus on the lips!  Haha..)

Hope this overview has been helpful, and thank you for looking!

NARS Satin Lip Pencils: Luxembourg & Palais Royal [Swatches, Review & LOTD]

This is the last installment of the NARS Satin Lip Pencils  (I hope! that's if I don't buy more, but I think I have all the shades I love!) - featuring my absolute top picks from the new range.  These are available from 1 April 2013 at S$37 each.

    Luxembourg - Vivid Watermelon

Palais Royal - Sangria (same color description as Seduction blush heheh)

I fell in love with the look of these two when I saw them... and after wearing them, I love even more!

I notice there is staining with the bolder and intense red / pink shades.  But it is a nice stain.  I don't personally find them drying on me... and certainly the satin dewy finish of the lipsticks fade after about 1 hour or so.  In terms of overall longevity, they are about the same as the Pure Matte Velvet lip pencils.

    Other entries in this series:

Foralise & Rikugien (the natural and nude)

Majella - the deep true red

    YU - the hot pink

Swatches - I wanted to show the difference in the red tones of Majella and Luxembourg - Majella is a true deep red, whereas Luxembourg is a deep pinky red.

I wore Luxembourg out last night, and it lasted very well and wears off pretty well throughout drinks and desserts.  Because it stains, you can't really tell where it's faded and intact which is always a good thing.

    Lip swatches!

Palais Royal is just mad love!  It is not scary blackish plum (like Volga) and I think it is along the same line as TOM FORD BLACK ORCHID --- shucks, as I am typing this I wish I had taken a comparison swatch - but my feeling is Black Orchid might be a tad more purple-y.

    Here's Luxembourg overall:

    and Palais Royal overall:

All products used (all NARS unless stated otherwise)

Face: YSL Radiant Skincare brush, Sheer Glow foundation shade Deauville, Loose Powder shade Flesh, Creamy Radiant concealer, Light Reflecting Loose powder to finish

    Cheeks: Laguna Bronzer, Gilda Blush

Eyes: Pro Primer eyeshadow base, Alhambra eyeshadow duo, Larger than Life pencil in Via Veneto on upper eyelids and Rue Bonparte to tightline lower lids, Makeup Store Chocolate Cheesecake pencil for lower eyelids

Brows filled in with Urban Decay NAKED BASICS eyeshadow palette, and brushed with Shu Uemura brow manicure in Ash Brown

and here's what I mean by the staining:

Hope you enjoyed my mini series on the NARS Satin Lip Pencils!

Cafe Makeup has a comprehension overview of ALL the shades available, click here to check it out!
I personally love the more bold and intense shades in this range, somehow the formula just lends itself very well to the reds and the pinks.  I am not so much caught by the natural shades, but then again that's just me.  There's definitel something to suit everyone's preferences among the shades we have, and do check it out at the store when it launches!

    Thanks for looking!

NARS Satin Lip Pencils: YU [Swatches, Review & LOTD]

    Hi hi!

This entry features one of the new NARS Satin Lip Pencils, in the shade YU - a shocking pink - it is very very similar to NARS Schiapp except that Schiapp is matte but I would say that they are 99% similar.  YU might be just a tad lighter and brighter simply due to its satin finish.  I forgot to take a pic of my comparison swatch of the two...but trust me... if you have Schiapp, you don't need YU.  And if you don't have Schiapp, you definitely need to check out YU - if you love a bright pop of shocking pink when wearing a neutral smokey eyes - that's how I would like to pair it anyway.

YU is a very cool toned pink - and it doesn't have that 'white' pigment which makes some of these bright lipsticks quite hard to pull off.  These pencils lasts a good 5-6 hours of wear (I won't say it lasts 12 hours honestly) but the longetivity is still impressive given the formula and finish of these lip pencils.

YU is very pigmented, and goes on smoothly.  Here's the initial swipe on my lips.  (pardon the cotton pad lint bits!  Heheh)

    And an overall look -

    All products used:

Face: YSL Radiant Skincare brush, Sheer Glow foundation shade Deauville, Loose Powder shade Flesh, Creamy Radiant concealer, Light Reflecting Loose powder to finish

    Cheeks: Laguna Bronzer, Gilda Blush

Eyes: Pro Primer eyeshadow base, Alhambra eyeshadow duo, Larger than Life pencil in Via Veneto on upper eyelids and Rue Bonparte to tightline lower lids, Makeup Store Ocean Breeze pencil for lower eyelids

Brows filled in with Urban Decay NAKED BASICS eyeshadow palette, and brushed with Shu Uemura brow manicure in Ash Brown

To see other NARS Satin Lip pencils I have featured click on the following links:

Foralise & Rikugien - pale apricot & rose pink

    Majella - garnet red

Palais Royal & Luxembourg - Sangria & Vivid Watermelon

NARS Satin Lip Pencils: Majella [Swatches, Review & LOTD]

    Hi hi

This entry will feature NARS Satin Lip Pencil in the shade Majella.  When I saw the shades and reviews online for the new NARS Satin Lip Pencils, Majella, I knew I wanted this rich deep red...I have been really impressed by their matte velvet lip pencils (in the beautiful reds of Dragon Girl and Cruella) so it really was a matter of how many reds I want to get from this collection.

These pencils will be available from 1 April 2013, and retails for S$37 each.

On the NARS site, Majella is described as a garnet shade, and it is easy to see why.  The red is rich and deep.  The  color payoff is intense, and opaque in one coat.  I love these red pencils, because they make application so easy, you don't need a lipliner, I literally always just slap these on.

    Swatches -

Just to show you the intense payoff, with one swipe across  the lips

Sure, it is not the most unique red, but the formula is impressive, it is so smooth, not drying at all, and is pretty long lasting, which is why I would recommend Majella as must have red from this range.  I am not going to do a red lips comparison in this entry (which could turn out to be really massive).

It might look slightly cool-toned, but I feel like it is not too 'scary' for most people to pull off. (in my lipswatches, note that I am not wearing any foundation, so do check out the LOTD for a more complete view of how the lip pencil looks like)

    Really really gorgeous red.

All products used (All NARS unless stated otherwise)

Face: YSL Radiant Skincare brush, Sheer Glow foundation shade Deauville, Loose Powder shade Flesh, Creamy Radiant concealer, Light Reflecting Loose powder to finish

    Cheeks: Laguna Bronzer, Gilda Blush

NARS Satin Lip Pencils: Foralise & Rikugien [Swatches, Review & LOTD]

Hi hi, I am starting this mini series of NARS Satin Lip Pencils... I have 6 to showcase, and first let's start with the neutral/ nudes range of colors.  There's a total of 12 shades released here (there's a 13th shade which is exclusive to narscosmetics.com, fyi).  The new formula of these lip pencils are long lasting, rich in color pigments and moisture rich.

The Satin Lip Pencils retail for S$37 each, and will be available from 1 April 2013 at the NARS Store at Tangs Orchard.

So here we have Foralise and Rikugien.

According to the NARS site, Foralise is described as a Light Apricot.  It is a pale warm nude, which I would typically wear with a stronger eye look.  On its own, it will look a little washed out.  I tried this light shade out on my cousin, and I must say that it lasted about 5 hours on her through drinks and food.  Her lips are a little dry, and the pale warm toned nude shade did emphaise a bit of that dryness, but did not make her lips even dryer.  By the end of the night, we could still notice traces of the lip pencil on her lips.  If you like nude lippies that doesn't have any pink tones, you must check out Foralise.

Rikugien is a rose pink which is an almost exact match to my skintone.  I find this shade to be on the sheer side (as compared to the reds that you will see in the next few entries) but it is a safe shade if you are light to medium skintones.

Here's a LOTD which I did dark smokey eyes, and pair with these two natural lippies.

All products used (all NARS unless stated otherwise)

Face: YSL Radiant Skincare brush, Sheer Glow foundation shade Deauville, Loose Powder shade Flesh

    Cheeks: Laguna Bronzer, Madly Blush

Eyes: Pro Primer eyeshadow base, 413BLKR eyeshadow duo, Edie eyeshadow single (to highlight brow bone), Eyeliner Stylo Atlantic, Larger than Life pencil in Via Veneto, Blondie eyeshadow single to blend ard the crease

Brows filled in with Urban Decay NAKED BASICS eyeshadow palette, and brushed with Shu Uemura brow manicure in Ash Brown

NEW Dior Addict Gloss [Photos, Information & Swatches]

At all Dior Counters, 1 April 2013.

“Colour is indispensable to beauty. Lipstick is a fashion accessory.”

Colour. Every single colour. It was obvious to Christian Dior.
In the creative backstage frenzy, Dior Addict is a declaration of love for fashion, and an electric whirlpool of colour.

2013, new colour manifesto: Dior Addict Gloss is the new touch of shine and fashion. This creative, addictive accessory lets you have fun with the latest trends. Ultimate shine plays with different effects, turning heads and attracting attention.

With a burst of laughter and a slick of gloss, the Addict icon plays with her reflection; edgy, sparkling and casual. In front of the mirror, she has fun creating her own colour manifesto. It is a passionate and magical game that carries her into the glossy whirlpool of 24, new, totally fashionable shades. Texture effects, style effects, and amazing mirror-shine lips.

    An object of desire

Style has been captured in a vibrantly colourful and dazzling bottle. Witness a magic, psychedelic merry-go-round of vivid and elegant shades. Dior Addict Gloss: a new weapon of seduction to delight the lips of every fashionista, and give an incredible energy boost to your look. Each colour has its own fashion effect, making it beautiful and unique, addictive, and as sexy as a pair of stilettos.

    A magic formula...

... provides lips with incredible shine and complete comfort. Its secret: the Mirror Shine Complex, an unrivalled procedure perfected by the Dior Research team.

Polarised crystalline micro-particles organize light reflection by sliding beneath a layer of mini mirror plaques. Thanks to the way in which they rotate, these micro-particles ensure optimal light diffusion, creating the magic of a perfect mirror.

The gel treatment formula, enriched with spheres of hyaluronic acid, plumps and hydrates for an even more intense, full-lipped effect.

Lips are bathed in light and enjoy an almost indecent degree of comfort for an all-round colour explosion. Irresistibly attractive; this is a highly desirable pout.

    Color Party

A staggering range of colours created by Tyen offers, to the nearest shade, a vibrant and spectacular "Color Party."

Whether extravagant or demure, avant-garde or classical, daring or discreet, lips display a seductively fresh, pop look.

    24 shades. 3 special effects.

    A sparkling backstage “colorama”.
-The Shimmer effect: a star effect that accentuates the mirror shine of Dior Addict Gloss with stylish, glittering appeal
-The Pearly effect: extremely fine mother-of-pearl particles bathe the lips in a soft intensity -The Pure effect, like a shot of pigment; from the milkiest nudes to the most avant-garde lacquers.

    Glitter Fever

    The "Shimmer" shades
A fun, sensual collection for lips that do as they please, both night and day. Meticulously dosed glitter is carefully chosen to match the gloss, for a spectacular shimmering effect. Stylish, tailored shine for your lips.
The Dior Addict icon's fashion manifesto.

    4 It Shades – 4 Stars

"Spring Ball": a cool, soft, nude shade is both delicate and light, with all the glamour of Monsieur Dior's cherished ball gowns.

"Princess": a bright, vivacious and joyous pink with all the mischievous elegance of a princess dressed by the Couturier.

"Délice": a vivid, racy coral winks suggestively, inducing desire like a voluptuous scent...

    " D i a b l o t i n e
": This strong colour insolently displays the sensual red of a fiery temptress, or, of a Trafalgar dress, straight out of a Dior show.

    Fashion-Mixer

Mix and match: new possibilities abound to make your look more sophisticated and to accessorize your style.

4 shades of Dior Addict Lipstick and 4, more sophisticated shades of Dior Addict Extrême, are recreating the 4 "it-shades" of Dior Addict Gloss.

With a subtle glimmer thanks to their texture blended with fine, mother of pearl particles, these shades deliver delicate colour and delicious volume. Shine is present yet acquires a patina in this sensual blend. In hues of chic beige, tender pink and fresh orange, this delicate spectrum provides softness.

    Pur Manifesto

    The "Pure" shades

Play with light and vary the shine effect with a wardrobe of finishes. Bright red becomes a translucent cordial; pinkish- beige charms with a milky effect, and bright pink dazzles with a vinyl lacquer finish.
Voluptuous, full lips for an iconic French kiss.

     ***************

Yesterday, we had the chance to preview the new Dior Addict Gloss, and the makeup artist was on hand to demonstrate the mix-and-match lip combination - using complimentary shades, you can create a more dimensional and interesting lipstick look, and nothing crazy like a color-block look..it's more like a subtle ombre effect.  Definitely something to try out.

Hope this sharing has been helpful!

There will also be 4 nailpolishes released to match the 4 IT shades, click here for more photos & information!

YSL Rouge Volupte Shine: No 12 Corail Incandescent

    Hi hi!

This is a quick look featuring one of the new YSL Rouge Volupte Shine in No12 Corail Incandescent.  The new Rouge Volupte Shine lipsticks are already available at the YSL counter at Tangs and also at their store in Ion retailing for S$45 each.  These lipsticks have a high glossy finish, and have a semi-sheer consistency.  They are creamy, and goes onto the lips very smoothly.  I find them very moisturising and have a hydrating effect on me.  If you want a more opaque look than the current Rouge Volupte Sheer Candy, then the Shine series would be right up your alley.

I was given 5 of these Rouge Volupte Shines..and here we have a bright coral pink - this can even pass off as a wearable red for beginners.  There is some pink, mostly a bright coral shade.  The color payoff on this particular shade is more opaque than the others.  It is very pretty, and great match for a soft neutral smokey eye look.

I find that these last about 2 - 3 hours on me, they are not very lasting simply because of the very emolient and moisturising factor, but they are easy to apply, and I don't really have an issue with that.   You wil also find that other shades which I will be featuring in the next couple of days show up more creamy and opaque.

YSL Rouge Volupte Shine: No 6 Pink in Devotion

    Hi hi!

This is a quick look featuring one of the new YSL Rouge Volupte Shine in No6 Pink in Devotion.

I was given 5 of these Rouge Volupte Shines..and here we have a rather deep pink shade - which leans on the warmer side (as opposed to the cooler 19 Fuchsia in Rage which I featured in the previous entry).  I personally prefer wearing a darker warm pink like this - it enhances my neutral understone, and warms up my complexion in general.  Overall, I think that this is a safe shade to get, and I sometimes blot away the shine of the lipstick, and wear it as a matte stain for a healthy rosy lips effect.

I find that these last about 2 - 3 hours on me, they are not very lasting simply because of the very emolient and moisturising factor, but they are easy to apply, and I don't really have an issue with that.   You wil also find that other shades which I will be featuring in the next couple of days show up more creamy and opaque.

    On my lips

I find that because these lipsticks are so emoilient, they don't settle into the lips of my lips, and feel really moisturising and creamy on my lips.

    And overall look:

A quick comparison of the other shades:

Which is your fave among the five?  Please share!

I hope this review has been helpful, and thank you for reading!
