About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

Nails Story: Glitter Gal DuoChrome Contorted Mauve [Photos & Swatches]

    Hi!

This entry features Glitter Gal DuoChrome nail polish in the shade Contorted Mauve.  On its own, it is a very sheer shade, and I think it is best to paint over a base color of your choice.  I went for the safe route and painted black on my fingernails, which will show off perfectly the multi-color finish of Contorted Mauve.

Contorted Mauve has a mixture of predominately forest green and purple over black.  I have tried it on its own (painted 2 coats) but I know that wouldn't do the color justice.  Over the black polish, Contorted Mauve takes on a more interesting finish, it looks mainly forest green in my pictures, but you can see at some angles the polish also looks a rich metallic purple, and there is also slight golden sheen peeking through.

The formula on this is very smooth, and I applied two coats in the following swatches.  I applied two thin coats, very steadily, to avoid any potential brush strokes.

If you are into dark mysterious color-changing shades, I think you will enjoy Glitter Gal's DuoChrome range of polishes.  The fact that they are sheer on their own, simply means that this is a versatile shade which you can layer over a solid color, and make the nail polish more multi-dimensional and complex.

I received my Glitter Gal DuoChrome nail polish from Meimei's Signatures where you can make your purchase.

Five other bloggers will also be featuring the Glitter Gal DuoChrome nailpolishes, I will insert links here as I come across them.

Mabel from She Shops Makeup featured Distorted Platinum, here.

    Meanwhile enjoy the swatches:

I used Orly Liquid Vinyl (2 coats).

Mainly forest green, but you can see purple peeking through.

The beautiful metallic finish of the polish.

Another angle showing off the different shades of duo chrome.

I love how it looks green and purple at the same time...

Hope these swatches have been helpful, and thank you for looking!

Nails Story: YSL SS2012 Colour Nail Polish Duo Edition 7 [Swatches & Comparisons]

    Hi!

This YSL nail polish duo is released as part of their 2012 Spring makeup collection.  I was very drawn to it after seeing it on Raeview's videos....and so when my sister was in HK recently, it is inevitable that I have to get her to buy this for me.  (not sure how much though..)  Anyway... the main thing of this duo is probably the bright shade of green that has very fine golden green shimmers.

The formula of both shades are fantastic, almost a one-coater, though I applied two coats for this swatch entry.  The bottles contain 6ml of product each, and the brush applicator is a sharp angled one, that allows for more precise application (especially when you try out the recommended french manicure method).  I like the angled brush, as I was able to get a very nice sharp line at the base of my nails.

I like YSL nail polish in general (I have a grey one in my stash from eons ago) they are super smooth and pigmented.  I wish their nail polish smell like their lipsticks though.  That would be totally cool!

    Swatches & Comparisons:

The green shade has been most commonly compared with Dior's Waterlily, another Spring 2012 green shade.. they aren't nowhere alike, but here's how they look like side by side.   Both contains that ultra fine shimmer bits, but the tones are entirely different.

and a few more green comparisons

That's all, and thanks for looking!

LOTD: Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Color in Patina

    Hi!

This look features one of the four Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Colors that I have - Patina - which is a mossy green shade.  I really like how this product is so buildable, and has intense color payoff.  I don't set it with any other eyeshadow, though I do recommend using an eyeshadow base underneath.  As I have mentioned in previous entries, this cream color lasts without any fading nor creasing throughout the whole day.

All products used are listed and links are also included if you want to see any close-ups:

Foundation: ettusais BB mineral cream, illamasqua skinbase, La Mer Powder

Concealer: Shu Uemura Pro Gel Cealer

Cheeks: Bourjois bronzer , Benefit Bella Bimba

    Lips: Tom Ford Blush Nude

Eyes: Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Color Patina, Stila Smudgepot in Golden Noir [liner], MAC Cork & Omega on the crease, MAC Brule on browbone, Anna Sui Perfect Mascara on lower lashes

    * false lashes used here are 2 pairs of lashes which I layered together, got them from Amy who bought them in TW recently.  Liking the layered and volume effect, yet still "natural"

    More pictures below:

*forehead is quite zitty at the moment.  Sigh!

    * large aviator shades come in handy when it's always so hot and sunny, and great to wear when you are people watching at Starbucks.  :)

    Thanks for looking!

    LOTD: Green Suede!

I had a sudden urge to rock some green eyeshadow today, and I think the easiest (and chic too) way to pull them off is to use one main color all over the lids.  I also went for a rather bold colored lip - milky orangey color.  Had tickets to watch the Suede concert this evening, and I am very happy because the last time I saw them perform was probably 5 or 6 years back at Fort Canning.  It is a band that I grew up with during my Secondary School days, and hearing all the familiar songs again live is just kind of surreal and nostalgic to say the least.  Really enjoyed myself.  And we were seriously, really up close and personal, as you might be able to tell from the last two pictures of this entry -- and that's really quite priceless for me.

I also made a quick detour to Ion Orchard to pick up my newly engraved Shu Uemura palette, followed by a trip to the Watson sale (I hauled quite a decent bit!) before making my way to the Indoor Stadium.

    All products used:

Foundation: Leaders Clinic Mild Sunscreen & Waterproof Makeup Base Combination SPF50/PA+++,  Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua, La Mer Powder

Concealer: Sonia Kasuk Hidden Agenda Concealer Palette (for spots), MAC Prep+Prime Highlight Radiant Rose (used on undereyes only)

Cheeks: Clarins 3D Radiance Face Powder, Clarins Mosaïque bronzer

Lips: YSL Rouge Volupte Peach Fauborg 30, Chanel Extrait De Gloss Genie

Eyes: UDPP, Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill intense #13 Black, Inglot Pearl 414 (green), Inglot Pearl 395 (brow bone highlight), MAC Plummage on crease, Inglot Shine 06 (inner corner), MUFE Aqualiner #12

    Nails: Illamasqua Baptiste, Inglot 202, 203, 205

    More pictures and close ups!

that's all, and thanks for looking :)

Nails Story! Dupes for Blues and Greens!

So are these dupes???  I bought the two couleur inc nail polish for this little research and experiment project.

Couleur inc  nail polish are sold at John Little.  That's where I bought them. They cost S$4.30 each.

Now for some swatches, and you  be the judge:

At first I thought that Couleur Inc (98) is similar to Suzi Says Feng Shui (SSFS) but SSFS is way lighter.  Then I think it is more alike Mesmerise by Essie.  If you can't get your hands on Mesmerize, you need to get Couleur Inc 98, cos they are almost identical, and it is way cheaper too.

Here, you can see that Couleur Inc (66) is quite similar to Jade is the new Black  (JITNB).  66 is slightly lighter, but they have almost identical shade of green.  To a nail freak like me, I don't think they are dupes, but if you want a cheaper dupe for JITNB then Couleur Inc 66 is a great alternative.

I hope this is useful for those looking for these greens and blues nail colors which are all the rage for this summer.  Actually for quite a long time, I think, that  blues and greens have come into their own as far as 'mainstream' nail colors go.

    Thanks for reading!
