About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

Latest Armcandy from LeVonne.Com [Feb 2013]

    Hi hi!

Time for my Feb installment of Levonne's latest arrivals - I am a little late in posting this, but if you have been following my sis (@beverley_ng) or my instagram, you would have seen us wearing the new Levonne armcandy - this batch consists of mainly chunky chains - my LOVES.  Without further ado, let's start checking them out... up close and personal style!

Shipping/ postage is free, and each item comes with its own black velvet pouch.

Here we have the dainty infinity ring & bracelet - the ring is a gold colored one, while the bracelet is rose gold (loves!  rose gold...my type!)

    beaded rose gold bracelet

    infinity ring

this combination consists of everything from Levonne - I have been eyeing some chunky gold and silver chains lately, and I am glad that they are now available at Levonne at much reasonable prices.

    Gold Chain S (not pictured)

Textured Gold Chain (very trendy, imo)

    Gold Chain L

These chains come with adjustable links, so they fit various wrist sizes.  In these pictures they are worn at their 'narrowest/tighest' with plenty of room for expansion, as you can see.. there's still plenty of space.

Next, we have the silver chains - my fave currently - and I like to style them with pops of colors, like this mint green studded bracelet from H&M and also sometimes with neon pops of armcandy too.

    And lastly, we have the

Black Chain bracelet  - something a little more edgy.

    and a close up:

Love the latest arrivals from Levonne!

OPI Spring 2013 Euro Centrale Collection: My Vampire is Buff & Polka.com [Photos & Swatches]

    Hi hi!

I purchased two colors from OPI's Spring collection - Euro Centrale, the rest of the colors look gorgeous, but nothing that I MUST have.  I went for the nudey white, and the glitter topcoat in the collection.  For complete swatches of the whole collection, do check out The PolishAholic.

You can get OPI, China Glaze, Essie polishes from my fave trusty local seller, Tammy (Timtam) at her online store here.  (link link link)  She is very fast with replies and shipping.

My Vampire is Buff - an off white nude shade - This is two coats, and my kind of color, I am a sucker for anything which is a variant of nude/ white.  I like the formula of this, it is quite smooth, and I don't find it too streaky.   And I love the name.  Heheh.

Polka.com is a glitter topcoat, very densely packed with blue and hot pink glitter bits.  I layered it over My Vampire is Buff - this glitter reminds me of Pibble Polish Faithful Friend (without the square glitter bits though, but totally along the same lines).

Another angle to show the reflection of the glitter bits.  It is really pretty.

A quick comparison of my fave OPI nudes with My Vampire is Buff:

I tend to lean towards the creamy nudes (as opposed to the sheer french manicure nudes from OPIs, such as Sweet Heart), and I am glad to add My Vampire is Buff to the collection.

Hope this has been helpful, and thanks for looking!

YSL La Laque in 01 Rouge Pop Art & 28 Bronze Aztec [Photos & Swatches]

    Hi hi!

This entry features a couple of YSL nail polishes... I have a few from their past limited edition collections, but I think these are the first ones I properly got from their permanent collection.  I selected a classic red (to match the Rouge Pur Couture in 01 Rouge Pop Art), and a metallic shade which is truly gorgeous.

01 Rouge Pop Art is a gorgeous bold red.  I have countless red, but this is BOLD... it is blindingly bright, and the color is really beautiful.

28 Bronze Aztec is nothing like the name and the color in the bottle.  It is a blackened base with an olive golden sheen.  The shimmer are so fine, they are very very smooth.

Both look opaque in one coat, but I applied 2 for maximum pop in this pictures.

Each YSl Nail Polish retails for $35, and you can get them from the YSL store at ION basement, or order directly from Tangs eStore.

Now... on to the details and swatches:

The bottle is sleek and square, I like the clean lines on the bottle.. and the names printed together.

The cap is shiny but not fingerprint magnet type.

I love the brush most of all (besides the formula), it has a curved tip, and is quite flat.  This means that you can get perfect smooth lines at the base of your nails, because the curve actually fits the base of my nail shape.

    Swatches

It is a little hard to capture the red without my camera going a little crazy, the red is that bright.

I think this is best on short nails like mine.

The shimmer is very very fine on Bronze Aztec, and you got to see it to believe it.

But this is a gorgeous metallic shade, and if you want to pick a dark shade from YSL, I highly recommend this color!

My fave shot of Bronze Aztec here.

Hope this has been helpful, and thanks for reading!

LOTD: NARS Rajasthan & Mata Hari [Plus my DIY Galaxy Manicure]

    Hi hi!

A few sharp readers have noted the laspe in frequency of entries lately...I have been doing a pattern of weekend spams, and then remaining relatively quiet on the blog front during the week... but if you follow me on instagram, you probably have a pretty good idea of what entries will be coming up next.  However, it's just a little hectice on the work front for me to update as much, and there are days when I feel just a bit overwhelmed, and don't know where to start. Hope to be more 'regular' and catch up in the coming couple of weeks ahead.  :)

This entry is about this LOTD which I quickly did (in less than 30 minutes) when I visited Sarah together with Joey during EID yesterday.  Rummaged through my drawers, and somehow I always come back to my NARS duo eyeshadows when I want to do something 'different'.

Just a brief description on this eyelook (since it is slightly more complicated than my usual one color all over look).

I used the lighter shade in NARS Tzarine duo on my browbone...The dark antique gold shade in NARS Rajasthan on the inner corners, and the darker blacken teal shade on the outer corner, and just blend out any areas where two colors meet. Rest of the look is kept rather simple, but quite excited, because I used a mineral powder foundation, and I am quite liking the coverage and effect!  All products used will be listed at the end of this entry.

    all products used:

face - Elizabeth Arden Pure Mineral foundation (shade 01), Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage SC-03

cheeks - MUFE Mat Bronzer, NARS Mata Hari

lips - TOM FORD Blush Nude

eyes - NARS eyeshadow primer, NARS Tzarine, NARS Rajasthan, Heavy Rotation Liquid Liner

also did this galaxy nail art on my hands, totally inspired by Jennifer's brilliant attempt here

a snapshot of the yummy food I had at Sarah's place, woots!! :)

Might post a mini rambly update soon, if I feel up to it.. :)  stay tune, and thank you very much for reading!

    We Love Arm Candy!

I don't know where and how it started but of late it's been getting to be sort of  little hobby to collect pieces for my wrist.  Sure, I have always fancied statement pieces on my wrist, and I probably wear bracelets and bangles more often than a necklace - but there seems no better time or season to get a arm party started and going.

And why call them arm-candy, arm party?  To me, it's a party, because, the more the better.  And they all look so pretty together, the term candy is certainly apt.  I like a great variety of these arm party, from designer to the cheapy pieces, from sleek and chic to hardcore studs and leather.  An eclectic mix of armcandy is really the charm and appeal of these accessories for me.

In this entry, I want to show most of what I have in my armcandy stash - most of which I have acquired lately.   And together with armcandy, I also wear rings - only that I prefer and tend to wear rings only on my left ring finger.  It seems to be the only place to wear rings without them getting in the way of things.   I will also be showing you some of my combination so of armcandy - though I must say that I usually just grab a bunch of whichever I feel like wearing for the day (I throw them all in my bag, and wear them on the way out).

First, we have the designer pieces usually I buy these from Shopbop.

Marc by Marc Jacobs, Balenciaga, McQueen, Juicy Couture

The studs and 'base' pieces - I always add a studded piece to the mix, and also something that is almost all black to sort of anchor the whole combination together.  I bought the multi-wrap bracelet from Shopbop (very Chan Luu), DIY leather studs made by my gf, black jade bracelet I bought at the market near my house, and the two colorful pieces are from ASOS.

Seasonal cheapy pieces from H&M - you can count on H&M to stock the trendy seasonal pieces for below $10.  The quality isn't always the greatest, so if you see something you like, and will want to wear for a long time to come, buy a few of the same piece to stock up!  This season, there are lots of kitschy colorful jeweled pieces, along with some woven chain bracelet stuff which seems to be all the rage these days.

These just arrived recently courtesy of my gf from HK.  Again the mixture of woven threads and silver parts is just very trendy this season.  Loves them, and they are also quite affordable.

The sentimental pieces - My T&Co. ball tennis bracelet which I bought for myself so many years ago.  My 21st birthday white gold bangle with screw details which is a gift from my late granny, a real gold bangle that I salvage from my late auntie's jewelry stash (incidentally today is also her death anniversary... but let's not get too sentimental here).

    Some stacking options

these are my current fave rings

I am quite extreme when it comes to my taste in rings.  I Anything from - big chunk rings to the daintiest most feminine slim rings.  I will pay for quaity rings, and I will also buy the $1 and $5 ones you often find at those push cart stalls.

how some of the rings look like on my fingers

you notice that I am currently sporting extremely long (and fake) nail extensions.  this is one of the reasons why I haven't felt like updating very often lately - typing has officially become a bi**h (and that it's the peak season at work, and I have been spending substantial time at the gym & also just going out with my cronies) -   I will be trimming them--the nails--- to a decent length when I go back for my infills.  I got them done on a whim, and I am quite pleased to go back to sporting these long french tip extensions after several years of natural nails.

that's all, and hope this has been helpful!

    Thank you for reading.

Nails Story: Going for GOLD this Long Weekend

    Blinged out nails!

Since it's a festive long weekend, I shall try to get in the mood and sport these tacky glittery gold nails.  I applied 2 coats of Barry M's 289 Gold nail polish, followed by LAYERS of gold glitter nail polish in various sizes (from different bottles) for extra kick and dimension, topped off with a thick coat of Seche Vite to prevent the glittery layer from 'poking' through.

I know removing these will be a pain in the ar*e but... it's just for fun once a year.

A blurry picture to show how chunky glittery the nail color is.

That's all!  What nail color are you going to wear this weekend?
