About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

LOTD: Going Green with Makeup Store Pistachio Biscotti

Hallo!  Just a quick simple look featuring 3 products from Makeup Store's fall collection products - mainly the eyeshadows and lip products.  My friend has also highly requested that I do a look featuring this particular eyeshadow, Pistachio Biscotti.  The eyeshadow itself is soft and has a satiny finish.  It is not super shimmery, and pretty easy to work with.

I used a colored base with the eyeshadow, though I did sheer out the base (I used Shiseido shimmering cream in GR707), so it is not as though I need it to add more color.  I just wanted to give the eyeshadow a bit more dimension, seeing as I did not use any other eyeshadow on my eyes for this look, not even any crease color, and no brow bone highlight color.  I figure that with the lashes and the liner, my eyes would look defined enough without having to use too many eyeshadows at once.

I defined my eyes with Makeup Store pencil in Chocolate Cheesecake.  It is a deep taupe shade, very very wearable, and I think everyone will LOVE this pencil. It gives the right amount of definition, and also adds a subtle sheen.  It is soft enough to line both my upper and lower lids, and smudged out slightly.

On the face, I went for a natural finish foundation, and so I applied Lancome's Teint Miracle (one of my all time fail-proof foundation) and lightly set it with Clarins Skin Illusion Mineral Foundation.

Then I sculpted my cheeks with Tom Ford's Shade & Illuminate in shade 02, which works beautifully on me.  The contour shade is a little bit scarily dark on me, but it blends out so seamlessly and you can't really tell but the effect is there.  The highlight shade is a very smooth subtle sheen, as you will see in the pictures below.  I used the cream contour/highlight product on powdered skin, and it didn't cake and looks just fine.

Loving the sheer red gloss that isn't too bright on my lips. It gives a nice stained juicy look, which is always a healthy and wearable look for the lips.

Overall, I love doing a colored eye like this, just one color, and keeping the rest of the face very clean and flawless.  It is grown up and girly, without going all crazy rainbow on the eyes.  Keep the lips colored but sheer, and the cheeks sculpted (or I try my best to be...haha).

All products used will be listed at the end of this entry.

    All products used:

Base - Lancome Teint Miracle, Clarins Skin Illusion Mineral Foundation

Cheeks - Tom Ford Shape & Illuminate Intensity 2.0, Illamasqua Naked Rose powder blush

Lips - Makeup Store Gloss 2C1 Geranium

Eyes - NARS pro prime eyeshadow base, Shiseido Shimmering Cream GR707, Makeup Store Pistachio Biscotti

Liner - Makeup Store Chocolate Cheesecake (THIS IS AWESOME!)

    Lashes - Shu Uemura Farfarllina

    ** I didn't have to use any concealer! **

Hope you find this helpful, and thanks for looking!

NEW Dior Golden Jungle Fall 2012 [Information & Photos]

I know it is terribly early to start introducing fall collections, but we got to get going, and first to come up, is the Dior Fall 2012 makeup collection.

Spoiler Alert, if you are into exotic jungle themes, animal prints, rich earthy colours, you are going to fall in love with this collection.

In February 1947, in the Christian Dior salons on the Avenue Montaigne, Monsieur Christian Dior presented his first collection to the international press. Along with the Huit and Corolle lines that would inaugurate the era of the New Look, the couturier revealed another of his favourite themes: LEOPARD PRINT. Fashion editors were smitten, the room burst into applause and women rediscovered the pleasure of seduction.

Avant-garde, sophisticated and sensual, the JUNGLE MOTIF has been one of the trademark signatures of the House of Dior from its debut. Actress Marlene Dietrich and the muse and friend of Monsieur Dior, Mitzah Bricard, were its first fervent ambassadresses. With each decade and runway show, variations of leopard print, in dots or all-over patterns, continue to be cleverly reinterpreted by Dior Couture.

Gold is another essential basic at Dior. It is timeless, caught between precision and excess, sophistication and impertinence... Gold has always transformed the Dior woman into an idol, enhancing her figure and lighting up her face.

In the Dior Autumn/Winter 2012 makeup collection, Tyen revamps the jungle motif with a passionate touch: infused with gold, this ultra-chic animal print becomes even more sophisticated. Incredibly feline and a tad wild... The Golden Jungle Look embodies the luxury of the Urban Jungle, pushed to the extreme.

A glamorous sign, a Dior manifesto: this winter, embody the Golden Jungle.

Star product: THE GOLDEN JUNGLE PALETTE

In its precious case, the Golden Jungle Palette captures the essence of the modern jungle. The trio of matt, pearly and iridescent eyeshadows sculpt the eyelid, and feature a leopard motif. For the gloss, nude sheerness and shine accentuate the radiance of the lips. Sensuality is taken up a notch.

NARS Fall 2011: Grand Palais Duo & Galion Nail Polish [Photos & Swatches]

    Hi hi,

These are a couple of items which my gf help CP for me when she was in Hong Kong.  I was rather intrigued by the NARS Galion nail polish which is part of the fall collection.  It has been described as a 'mysterious' grey on one of the blogs I have come across, and the cool toned dark grey is really chic for fall.  I have several NARS polishes, and I quite enjoy the quality of their nail polish, so I didn't mind paying for a couple of nice colors from NARS.

Another item she helped me bought (which I kinda forgot) is the Grand Palais duo -- thinking back now, I am glad I didn't buy this during my recent NARS order!  If not, I would have ended up with two!  Grand Palais duo is featured and reviewed on Cafe Makeup, and you can also see check out JoeySpace for more information on this collection.

I didn't get anything else from the collection, and I have never been really drawn to NARS liners and lipsticks.  It's always the eyeshadows, blush and perhaps the Nail Polish.  :)

    Photos & Swatches:

This is two coats of the polish, without any base or top coat.  It is smooth and opaque, and really glossy, hence you see the very reflective surface -- and it looks almost black in my pictures.  I have seen swatches of this nail polish with flash lighting and it appears milkier in tone.

Grand Palais is a lovely duo consisting of a taupe-y type of color and a rather muted reddish brown shade.  The color payoff for both colors is quite decent, and the product is very smooth and finely milled.

That's all, and thanks for looking!

    Chanel Fall 2011 Makeup Craves

Everything in this collection is suckering me in.

Most of all, the Illusion d’Ombre - which are not permanent, apparently.

    Says Peter Philips:

Épatant, a gunmetal shade from his new-for-autumn Illusion d’Ombre cream eye shadow collection, which he mixed with two of the range’s other shimmering shades in white and black to create the focal point of the look. “They come with an applicator, but I prefer to use my finger,” Philips said of the mousse-y pigments, which can go on thick for opacity or sheered out for transparency. “You can actually use it as an eyeliner, too,” he pointed out—dipping an angled brush into the sparkling onyx pot and scrawling it across the upper lash line. A similar smudged line was drawn using Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof Eyeliner in Ébène below the lower lash line before Philips whipped on a few coats of its Inimitable Waterproof mascara in Noir.

    Product information:

[only including the ones I know I will definitely be purchasing]

Eyes: Illusion d’Ombre in Epatant, Mirifique, and Fantasme

Nails: Le Vernis Nail Colour in Graphite

    [available July/ August 2011]

Full article/ blog entry which I came across this lem-worthy and droolsome collection HERE.

Full video of the Chanel A/W 2011 runway show HERE.    Beautiful soundtrack too, features a 1987 track by The Cure called A Forest.

Meanwhile, sometime closer in the near future, I am wanting these:

Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Boy  - currently available

Haul: NARS 2010 Fall Collection & My MU Wishlist Came True!

    Hi hi,

When it comes to NARS, I suspect a little part of its allure comes from the fact that they are rather hard to get for us here, for now, at least.  That's good, or bad, in a way.  Good because we get to be quite restrained in our choices of colors from this brand, and only pick and choose the colors which we really want, and when the opportunity arises, we get our friends to CP for us, or when we travel to other countries where NARS is available, we kind of know what to look out for.  And it is also bad, because for me, I would tend to just grab anything that catches my fancy, because who knows when is the next time I get to an actual NARS counter, right?

The items you see here, are mainly products which my gf bought for me when she was working in HK for a few days.  So we had a little gift exchange, where I gave her the chanel nail polish, and she gifted me with these nars goodies (the two eyeshadow singles, and the lipstick pencil).  And the two eyeshadow duos, my sister's colleague got them perhaps weeks and weeks ago when the collection was newly released in HK.  Even I forgot all about it, til recently.  That was really a pleasant surprise to know that they managed to get both the duos.

And so, here we have Rajasthan (click here to see Temptalia's review and swatches)

And Tzarine (click here to see Temptalia's swatches and reviews)

The following are my own swatches -- -will get to play with them more over the weekend!   Rajasthan is more pigmented than Tzarine, but the teal-ish shade in Tzarine is super pretty with the gold flecks!

Next, we have the eyeshadow singles for the same 2010  Fall collection, Mangrove (click here to see Temptalia's swatches and reviews)  it is described as a  mustard yellow, and definitely something which I don't have in my stash.  I think it should be quite easy to wear on me...all over the lids, and with a darker crease color.

And then, Coconut Grove, which is a almost blackish brown.  The base color reminds me of Mekong, except that this is a matte color.  It is very creamy and super pigmented.

And you can see the swatches and comparisons side by side:

Next, another goodie from my gf, is the Velvet matte lip pencil, in the color Walkyrie , a brownish red, that is not too dark, and certainly wearable anytime of the day.  It is very soft, and goes on the lips smoothly.  There is something wrong with the picture before, I must have accidentally added a black paint glob over the tip of the pencil in the midst of my editing, and it looks all waxy and black!  Argh!  It was way too late when I realised my mistake and I didn't want to go back and edit again.

Then we have a tiny sample of the Orgasm Illuminator.  It is like a liquid form of their famous shade, and here, I have swatched it next to the Orgasm Multiple stick (cream), and the Orgasm blush (powder).  The color differs ever so slightly among the three.

And lastly, I ordered the Doceur Blush from Michelle's spree, which is on its way to us, soon!  Here is a picture I took from Temptalia's website.  Looking forward to trying out this natural almost matte blush!
